In this episode, Caroline talks to Associate Professor of Occupational Psychology at the University of Greenwich, Dr Calvin Burns. In this fascinating conversation Calvin and I debate the distinction between trust and faith, he outlines the five major markers that determine risky behaviour, and we examine what our automatically activated or 'implicit' attitudes tell us about our pre-conscious beliefs. Please join her to look at life through a different lens. KEY TAKEAWAYS Implicit or automatically activated attitudes are ingrained in us. Quick-fire computerised tasks are a good way to reveal our implicit attitudes. There's no time to adjust how you react. Some beliefs are so internalised that we no longer question them. Sometimes trust conditioning overrides primal survival instinct. Calvin shares examples. Learning to trust involves questioning and risk assessment, with faith this is less likely to be the case. Risk and trust perception has a significant impact on decision making. People can be risk takers in one domain, but very risk averse in another area. There is a mind-body link. BEST MOMENTS‘Implicit attitudes are pre-conscious or automatically activated. ´‘Our perception of other people perceiving us affects our behaviour.'‘Trust exists because of uncertainty.'‘People know without knowing.' How we perceive the world is rooted in everything that has influenced us throughout our lives, emotionally and psychologically. We become the sum of our parts and each of us has our own unique view of the world. 'Vision' truly is an act of interpretation. In this podcast series through fascinating conversations, I set about trying to understand how we form our perceptions, view different perspectives, and examine how perception has influenced, inspired, or hindered the lives of each of my unique guests.
Tonight I realized that although I had sold myself on getting the interview with Eric Teplitz out I need to push it back. I decided to give myself space, instead of forcing output or constraining one of my most precious resources - time.I thought this was a fantastic time to go deeper into this topic. How do we create space for ourselves, and how does this help our thoughts grow? For me having the definition that space is a place with zero expectations and I can just be is helpful. I shared some personal examples and other thoughts I hope will help you in this endeavor. Currently I am in between chapters of my life, and I do need to give myself tons of grace and patience. I am learning a lot more how to do that. Also in this episode:Why Hot Tub Tuesdays for my roommates and I at BYUI were so helpfulMy epic show-out performance playing pickup basketball todayThe consequences for not operating in calmness and in a good spaceI really was planning to get the episode with Eric out, but it'll have to wait until Thursday. In the latest episode of Climb in Consulting, Nick is joined by Michael Simmonds and Manfred Abraham, who are both Co-CEOs at Yonder Consulting. We don't often have two guests appearing at once, but this episode really does demand it! Their story, and that of Yonder, makes for a fascinating case study in how, by combining complementary skill sets and businesses with shared values, you're able to create something that is truly greater than the sum of its parts. Having worked closely together in their previous businesses, Michael at Populus and Manfred at BrandCap, they decided to join forces to form Yonder back in 2020. Fast forward to 2022, and Yonder is thriving. Despite the challenges of bringing their businesses together during the pandemic, they're now a growing firm of over 150 people, with offices across London, New York and Hong Kong. In this conversation, Nick chats with Michael and Manfred as they explore their journey to co-running Yonder. They discuss the lessons they've learnt along the way, including: - How they successfully merged their businesses and launched Yonder during the pandemic, the challenges both of these things caused for them and how they overcame them. - How Michael and Manfred are able to make co-running the business work, the structures they use, and their advice to others thinking of following a similar approach. - And how they've approached diversity and inclusion at Yonder. The practical steps they've taken and advice for others looking to create more of an open conversation about diversity and inclusion in their firm. If you want to understand how you can make a merger work - whether you're merging firm, practice or team - the advice that Michael and Manfred share in this one will give you a lots to think about. In this episode, Rob sits down to speak with John – The Expat Property Guy who is also known as the Banksy of podcasting. He is based in Hong Kong but invests in UK property. John talks about the highs and lows of his journey of investing in property, from abroad. He and Rob discuss HMOs, new builds, the buy-refurbish-refinance model, SA, holiday lets and student accommodation. John also explains how using auctions you can buy wholesale rather than retail. KEY TAKEAWAYS Be careful to double-check what your financial advisors tell you. John´s was giving advice that was in his own interests rather than theirs. When done right, selling at an auction can be lucrative. You need to dig deep when doing your research. Find out why the property is in an auction. Ask, what is it that they are trying to hide? You need a decent team in the UK to handle everything for you. Ask for 4 or 5 references and call them all before hiring someone. Buying off-plan in the UK usually means you pay more than you should. Setting out the expectations of what you want from the people who you work with is particularly important when you are working at a distance. BEST MOMENTS ‘We made the classic expat mistake of looking at new build properties, a terrible idea.' ‘There are unscrupulous people out there and they will take advantage of you.' ‘It's all about obtaining things for wholesale prices rather than retail prices.' Inspired by feedback from episode 533 Reactions Matter, Phil unpacks a comment from a listener, “Everyone's brain produces a different story.” The views we have and the stories we tell are developed from our experiences and knowledge. We don't always get the story right because our view is limited. However, with more awareness and diverse interactions, we will be able to better see the other person's story. With all that’s going on and being inside for so long now, it gets hard to focus on anything else. On this episode of Authentic Living with Roxanne, we are going to take a look at how to slow our mind and focus on experiencing this downtime as a gift while we look forward to celebrating Earth Day on April 22nd! Today we welcome Environmental Expert and author, Jerry Yudelson. Known worldwide as a leader in the green building movement, Jerry is the author of twelve previous professional books on green building, sustainable development, water conservation, green homes, building performance, and green marketing. Authentic Touch Points: How Jerry fell into the environmental movement. 2:25 Struggling to slow down. 7:40 Viewing this downtime as a gift. 10:00 Meditating and being mindful. 14:25 Shifting from overachieving to peacefulness. 19:15 Our relationship with the Earth. 26:30 The 7th Generation Philosophy. 33:50 How can we make a difference? 35:20 Jerry’s new book, The Godfather of Green: An Eco-Spiritual Memoir, will be published on Earth Day, April 22nd. In the book, as a young environmentalist, Jerry meets a powerful Indian spiritual master who shows him how a serious practice of meditation and mindfulness can work hand-in-hand with protecting the planet. The master’s message is simple: change yourself before you try to change the world. Jerry takes this message to heart and strives to incorporate it into his busy life as an environmental activist, teacher, and business leader. With many of us working from home and spending most of our time with family, I encourage you to reach out with thoughts or questions. Click here to contact me at your convenience or click the link below to book a call with me. Thanks! From abalone hunter to national park service law enforcement to viral video cat rescuing star, Shannon Jay is the kind of guy you just love to sit down and listen to. A fantastic story teller, he is one of my favorite people to catch up with. In the podcast he talks about hunting giant red abalone on the Lost Coast, what he learned in 31 years of law enforcement (and some of the most important things he teaches) and his world famous (literally) cat rescuing stories from the burn zones of 3 major wildfires. Shannon Jay is a gem of a human, enjoy the show! In his landmark bestseller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant-in the blink of an eye-that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept? Why do some people follow their instincts and win, while others end up stumbling into error? How do our brains really work-in the office, in the classroom, in the kitchen, and in the bedroom? And why are the best decisions often those that are impossible to explain to others? In Blink we meet the psychologist who has learned to predict whether a marriage will last, based on a few minutes of observing a couple; the tennis coach who knows when a player will double-fault before the racket even makes contact with the ball; the antiquities experts who recognize a fake at a glance. Here, too, are great failures of "blink": the election of Warren Harding; "New Coke"; and the shooting of Amadou Diallo by police. Blink reveals that great decision makers aren't those who process the most information or spend the most time deliberating, but those who have perfected the art of "thin-slicing"-filtering the very few factors that matter from an overwhelming number of variables. Happy 2018! It's the first High Low episode of the year. We've got some books, shows, podcasts and articles to recommend to you, a Queens impression from Pandora (that's the suburb in New York, not the royal OAP) and a reader question about what to do when you're a Hot Mess.In this week's episode, we discuss the shocking - or is it so shocking? - new research from Kings College London, which reveals that 27% of pregnant women suffer from mental health problems. Is the 'pregnancy glow' myth to blame? Pandora - who at 8 months pregnant, believes the 'glow' to have passed her by entirely - speaks from experience; whilst Dolly muses upon the fetishisation of pregnant women in the media. Also in today's episode, we talk Dry January, Veganuary and other zeitgeisty lifestyle trends. Should we stop being so negative about 'new year, new me'?Thank you to our sponsors Google Pixel 2 and Treatwell plus Acast, for letting us use your studio.E-mail us thehighlowshow@gmail.com or tweet us @thehighlowshow.LinksListeningRomesh Ranganathan on The Adam Buxton podcasthttps://soundcloud.com/adam-buxton/ep61-romesh-ranganathanReadingThe Magical Art Of Not Giving a F**k by Sarah Knighthttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Life-Changing-Magic-Not-Giving-Spending/dp/0316270725Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell https://www.amazon.co.uk/Blink-Power-Thinking-Without/dp/0141014598The Vagina Monologues, 20th anniversary edition, by Eve Ensler https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vagina-Monologues-Eve-Ensler/dp/0349011281The Year the Grenfell Tower Fire Revealed The Lies That Londoners Tell Themselves, by Sam Knight for The New Yorker https://www.newyorker.com/culture/2017-in-review/the-year-the-grenfell-tower-fire-revealed-the-lie-that-londoners-tell-themselvesThere's Nothing Empowering or Feminist About The All-Female Line-Up on Celebrity Big Brother, by Georgia Aspinall for The Debrief https://thedebrief.co.uk/news/celebrity/celebrity-big-brother-anti-feminist/Braids, Cultural Appropriation And The Media's Erasure of Black Women, by Jamé Jackson for Fashionista.com https://fashionista.com/2018/01/black-hair-braids-cultural-appropriation-media-erasureWe Need To Stop Our Obsession With Lifestyle Trends (Particularly Danish Ones) - archive piece by Pandora (ahem) for The Spectator https://life.spectator.co.uk/2017/01/need-stop-obsessed-lifestyle-trends-especially-scandinavian-ones/WatchingBlack Mirror - series 4https://www.netflix.com/title/70264888Jim and Andy - The Great Beyondhttps://www.netflix.com/title/80209608 Little Women - BBC...
