Words That Shape Us: Rethinking the Language We Use in Relationships In this thought-provoking episode of the Human Intimacy Podcast, Dr. Kevin Skinner and MaryAnn Michaelis explore the powerful impact of the words we use in our relationships. From misunderstood terms like gaslighting, addiction, and defensiveness to therapeutic concepts like parts work, triggers, and intimacy, they unpack what these words really mean and why clarity matters. Drawing from decades of clinical experience, Dr. Skinner explains how language—used consciously or not—can either create emotional safety or reinforce shame and confusion. MaryAnn adds vivid examples of how common phrases and labels can trigger strong emotional responses, especially when they've been used harmfully in the past. The episode invites listeners to be more intentional about their communication—pausing to clarify meanings, owning emotional experiences instead of blaming others, and understanding the deeper messages behind the words. Listeners will come away with a richer appreciation of how language shapes healing, self-awareness, and human connection. Resources Mentioned in the Episode: Richard C. Part 1 David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell Summary"David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants" is a non-fiction book by Malcolm Gladwell published in 2013. In this book, Gladwell explores the dynamics of struggle and advantage, arguing that what we often perceive as disadvantages can actually be sources of strength and that the strongest opponents might not be as formidable as they appear. Key Themes and Concepts:Reinterpretation of Underdog Story: The book famously reexamines the biblical story of David and Goliath. Gladwell argues that David's victory over Goliath was not just a matter of faith but also strategic advantages. David, a skilled sling shooter, had the upper hand due to his agility and range advantage.Disadvantages Turned into Strengths: Gladwell posits that perceived disadvantages, like being an underdog or facing overwhelming odds, can lead to innovative thinking and resilience. He illustrates this through examples from various fields, including education, business, and civil rights.Dyspraxia and Advantage: In discussing personal experiences, Gladwell brings up his own struggles with dyspraxia (a condition affecting motor coordination), which led him to develop other skills such as storytelling and analytical thinking—demonstrating that challenges can cultivate unique strengths.Education System: The book examines how smaller class sizes and less traditional educational methods can lead to better outcomes for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, highlighting that unconventional strategies can turn weaknesses into strengths.Civil Rights Movement: Gladwell discusses the civil rights movement, arguing that the movement's success was partly due to its strategizing, grassroots organization, and ability to leverage the power of the 'underdog' narrative to garner support and change public perception. The Theory of the "Inverted U": The author presents the idea that too much adversity can overwhelm one's capabilities, while a certain level of challenge can provoke resilience. He outlines the importance of finding the right balance between challenge and support. Conclusion:In "David and Goliath", Gladwell encourages readers to reconsider their judgments about strength and weakness. By showcasing how underdogs can and do win against giants through intelligence, creativity, and perseverance, he invites us to look beyond conventional definitions of success and power. The book challenges the reader to see the silver lining in adversity and to recognize the value of unconventional approaches.Part 2 David and Goliath AuthorMalcolm Gladwell is a Canadian journalist, author, and public speaker known for his thought-provoking works that explore the sociological and psychological implications of various subjects. He was born on September 3, 1963, in Fareham, England, and raised in Ontario, Canada.David and Goliath was published on October 1, 2013. The book explores the dynamics of what defines strength and weakness, using various case studies and narratives, including the biblical story of David and Goliath, to discuss how perceived disadvantages can lead to better outcomes. In addition to David and Goliath, Malcolm Gladwell has written several other influential books, including:The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference (2000) An exploration of how ideas spread and why certain phenomena become trends.Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking (2005) Examines the power of rapid cognition and intuition in decision-making.Outliers: The Story of Success (2008) Analyzes the factors that contribute to high levels of success, emphasizing the importance of context, opportunity, and cultural legacy. What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures (2009) A collection of selected essays from Gladwell's writing in The New

#66I love Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell and the only reason it's not number one in our Top Ten Books for Expat Property Investors is because it's perhaps less applicable to property than the two titles above it on the list.Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, and how brilliant decisions are often made in the blink of an eye, but built on the foundation of years of experience. It examines why some people are able to follow their gut and win, while others fail and explores why the best decisions are often those hardest to explain to others.I explain how this concept has informed my own Expat Property Story. This episode is the tenth bite-sized daily episode celebrating the Twelve Days of Christmas 2022. In the latest episode of Climb in Consulting, Nick is joined by Michael Simmonds and Manfred Abraham, who are both Co-CEOs at Yonder Consulting. We don't often have two guests appearing at once, but this episode really does demand it! Their story, and that of Yonder, makes for a fascinating case study in how, by combining complementary skill sets and businesses with shared values, you're able to create something that is truly greater than the sum of its parts. Having worked closely together in their previous businesses, Michael at Populus and Manfred at BrandCap, they decided to join forces to form Yonder back in 2020. Fast forward to 2022, and Yonder is thriving. Despite the challenges of bringing their businesses together during the pandemic, they're now a growing firm of over 150 people, with offices across London, New York and Hong Kong. In this conversation, Nick chats with Michael and Manfred as they explore their journey to co-running Yonder. They discuss the lessons they've learnt along the way, including: - How they successfully merged their businesses and launched Yonder during the pandemic, the challenges both of these things caused for them and how they overcame them. - How Michael and Manfred are able to make co-running the business work, the structures they use, and their advice to others thinking of following a similar approach. - And how they've approached diversity and inclusion at Yonder. The practical steps they've taken and advice for others looking to create more of an open conversation about diversity and inclusion in their firm. If you want to understand how you can make a merger work - whether you're merging firm, practice or team - the advice that Michael and Manfred share in this one will give you a lots to think about. This episode talks about Vell's experience of functioning while depress. The Good Read for this episode is Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant—in the blink of an eye—that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept? Why do some people follow their instincts and win, while others end up stumbling into error? How do our brains really work—in the office, in the classroom, in the kitchen, and in the bedroom? And why are the best decisions often those that are impossible to explain to others? What's Popping in Vell's World consist of another wedding in the A, Heat Nation, RICO charges, and more. Improve Podcast School - Podcasting Growth, Marketing and Monetization Tips
The sooner you start recording scripted podcasts or even recording podcasts with outlines, the faster your podcast will reach a new level of quality, unlock new opportunities and be on a path towards a successful monetization. Full episode transcripts are available at:https://improvepodcast.com/school ( improvepodcast.com/school) Research Key Findings: – Recording Fully Scripted Episodes vs. Working with Outlines The study of over 1,000 podcasters has revealed that: 38% of higher-income podcasters record their episodes having a full script ready. On top, an additional 36% have a very detailed outline. This means that 76% of successful podcasters come highly prepared for their recordings. Doesn't this limit creativity? Not at all. It Actually shifts when your creativity is being used. When recording scripted podcasts, you focus your creativity during the writing of the script. And when recording, you focus on a perfect delivery of what you have already prepared. The study of podcasters has found that higher-income podcasters, those who earn at least $50,000 per year from their show, are 2.2 times more likely to use a full script for recording. This was determined to be one of the TOP 10 things that successful podcasters do differently. Should You Record Scripted Episodes or Use Only Outlines? A single-person podcast should be scripted. When doing interviews, you need to have a target your interview is trying to accomplish, the information you want to obtain. Reach this target using an outline of questions. When you mix interviews and narration, the narration part should be scripted. – What are the Benefits of Recording Scripted Podcasts? What are the Benefits of Recording Podcasts with Outlines? Blink by Malcolm Gladwell is a revolution in the understanding of the mind. It is all about those moments when we know something without knowing why. Gladwell explores the phenomenon of "blink", showing how a snap judgement can be far more effective than a cautious decision. Great decision makers aren't those who process the most information or spend the most time deliberating, but those who have perfected the art of "thin-slicing". Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept? Zane and Brandon Hunt hail from Detroit, MI. They came to Austin, almost with the idea to open a pizza joint. In 2011 they started where they could, with a mobile food trailer they named Via 313 Pizza. Their vision was to offer the first Detroit style option outside of Detroit. It didn't take long for their native Detroit style pizza to take center stage within the Austin community. One trailer became multiple trailers and by 2014 the works to open their first brick and mortar location was in motion. Check out episode 560 with The Hunt Bros. as mentioned in today's episode. In this week's episode, Amrit interviews Oz García, nutritional counselor, anti-aging consultant, speaker and the best selling author of several books on the matter.Oz Garcia is the founder of The Longevity Lounge, a clinical destination for anti-aging and beautification services. He provides customized longevity plans for his clients.Amrit and Oz talk about all that it takes to live a long and healthy life. In his early twenties, Oz used to live against his beliefs making his public view more important than his value system. He used to be a photographer who drank coffee several times a day, smoked cigarettes non stop and suffered from migraines which no doctors were able to cure. He knew something was wrong underneath the surface and began to explore new alternatives. He began to frequent one of the three available health stores at the time, where he discovered a whole new concept of functional eating and bought the book “The Miracle of Fasting by Paul Bragg”. Soon after reading it, he did his first fast. Concurrently, he took a course in the Landmark Form before known as EST training and began to get involved in several courses. He also took classes at the East West Center for Holistic Health, where he experimented with new alternative methods of health and healing. He slowly made the transition to a healthier lifestyle. He became a vegetarian for a number of years, started fasting, cut out coffee and cigarettes, and started running. Soon his migraines were gone too. At the age of twenty four, Oz embarked on a transformational journey that has brought him to where he is today. Ever since, he practices what he preaches and strongly believes that the driver of this transformational journey is all about being passionate, curious, creative and always wanting to know more. “I finally made a decision about what I wanted out of my life. I knew I didn't want to be in an artificial world”According to Garcia, lifestyle adjustments in what we eat, how we think and how we exercise are necessary as we get older. He says there are ways to slow the aging process and live well. Nutrition, exercise, meditation, sleep, food, and time outdoors are critical, but cultivating intelligence, thinking, passion, community, and our “self”, are equally as critical.Amrit and Oz dive deep into the importance of cultivating each one of these.Oz believes good thoughts overwhelms bad impulse, and once you understand that, then you can start making choices. Sometimes these choices are not the right ones, but you learn from them that helps you go further along the journey. In regards to cultivating thinking, you can regulate what you're thinking and what is worth suffering over or not. Destructive emotions result from errors of judgment. In regards to cultivating community, this is central to human experience. Having a sense of belonging unites us. Being a part of a community can help you connect with others, engage with others, and boost your physical and mental health. Oz supports this with the story of a lady who lived to be one hundred and six. We all need to cultivate a better life and it always begins with how we take care of ourselves.According to Garcia, to be able to cultivate our “self” we have the obligation, among many, to invent ourselves or reinvent ourselves in ways that leave our mind at peace to switch to a place of joy. Joy is peace in motion. He emphasizes on spending some time of the day thinking about what kind of a human being we want to be and journaling on a daily basis. He refers to the ”Five-minute Journal”, gratitude exercises that will help you sharpen your ability to focus on the good things in life, elevate yourself, be happier, improve relationships, and shift your mind to being positive. The more you do these practices, the more antifragile you become, therefore more authentic and more sincere. Oz shares some ways to regulate what is going on with your body and dives into how important it is to listen to people that have already mastered that space.“You have to earn your health, and discipline must be your shadow. Being disciplined comes with so many human rewards”In drawing things to a close, Amrit shares a beautiful proverb to the secret of living well and longer…“Eat half, walk double, laugh triple, and love without measure”Level up your life with unlimited access to every Mindvalley Quest Program (over 30+ programs). What do mindfulness and compassion have to do with the workplace? Turns out, a lot. Scott Shute is the head of mindfulness and compassion at LinkedIn. Mindfulness has always been important to Scott. He's been meditating since he was 13 years old and feels strongly about the importance of mindfulness. He's also been at LinkedIn for 8 and 1/2 years. He didn't always have the amazing title of head of mindfulness and compassion, but he was able to create a position that completely aligned with his goals and purpose and with the people oriented focus of LinkedIn. Scott is also the author of The Full Body Yes: Change Your Work and Your World from the Inside Out. We have a great conversation where we talk about what The Full Body Yes actually means and how LinkedIn is redefining the importance of people and members. Scott's book is a series of stories from his life and the lessons that he's learned. In this show, he shares some of those lessons and some of his life experiences. We talk about learning to trust your gut, shifting your perspective, and so much more. Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking is Malcolm Gladwell's second book. It presents in popular science format research from psychology and behavioral economics on the adaptive unconscious: mental processes that work rapidly and automatically from relatively little information. Blink examines the phenomenon of snap judgments, meaning the split-second decisions we make unconsciously. These snap judgments are important decision-making tools, but can also lead to bad choices and all manner of problems. Blink explains how we can best make use of them. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Books to Read Based on Your Enneagram Type Information doesn’t equal transformation.Sometimes we think there's something more we need to know before we take action. Although I’m usually a take-action kind of girl, when I’m stressed I can go into analysis paralysis mode.Remember: Integration of the information equals transformation. So if you’re struggling to take action, you need a guide. In this episode, I help you take the power tools you already have hanging in your metaphorical garage and use them to accelerate the transformation of your life. Why books As you’ve dug into the enneagram, you’ve learned that each type has core motives, fears and the hidden—or not so hidden—factor that holds each of us back. The books I talk about for each enneagram type will help you unpack that factor, better understand yourself, and start digging into the core motive behind everything you do. Books for all enneagram types Personal development books are my jam. The most important book that I’ve ever read was actually given to me in rehab. The key to this book and why it’s so powerful: It can be used as a workbook. What is it? The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown. The other book every enneagram type should read is The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks. This book is great for looking at what we’re most afraid of and considering our true motives.Books for each enneagram type Going further, I talk about each enneagram type briefly as well as the book I recommend for each one and why. Here’s a quick recap:Type 1: Banish Your Inner Critic by Denise JacobsType 2: Braving the Wilderness by Brene BrownType 3: How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy by Jenny OdellType 4: Stop Doing That Sh*t: End Self-Sabotage and Demand Your Life Back by Gary John BishopType 5: Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan CainType 6: Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking by Malcolm GladwellType 7: The Untethered Soul by Michael A. For our sixth episode, we explore the case for when it's time to stop thinking around your product ideas and time to put things into action. Design doing! A lot of the time it can be easy to snuggle up in the 'comfort blanket' of endless research without committing to making anything other than documents full of theory. We argue the point, that while design thinking is definitely valid, design doing is the way forward. Get out there earlier and test your ideas. We discuss the Design Sprint, the ultimate hybrid of thinking and doing, and how Matt learnt the importance of getting practical while baking sourdough during lockdown. Could there be anything more interesting than a “Love Lab”? I’m talking about a scientific study on LOVE. How cool is that? I know what you’re thinking….”Sign me up. I want to be part of it even if I don’t know what it is.” Let me tell you what this awesome lab is all about. It rose to fame when Malcolm Gladwell featured it in his wildly successful book Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking. The book is about people that are masters of a particular field at such a high level that they can see things that others miss in a very short amount of time. The claim to fame from the book Blink is that the “Love Lab” can predict in less than fifteen minutes whether a couple will stay together or divorce with a 90% accuracy. That is amazing! They are not shooting from the hip either. They are getting all kinds of data from the couples that goes far beyond what anyone else has ever done. The “Love Lab” is stepping up it’s game even more, taking it to a whole new level and we have one of the key people behind this huge step forward. On today’s show we interview Carrie Cole. Carrie Cole is the Director of Research for The Gottman Institute and a licensed mental health counselor in the state of Washington. As a Certified Gottman Method Couples’ Therapist and a master trainer in Gottman Method Therapy, she teaches all levels of the Gottman Method Certification Program. She is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Texas and an approved LPC Supervisor. She received her Master’s degree in Educational Psychology with a specialization in Counseling Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1994. She has over 20 years of experience working with individuals and couples on a wide range of issues including marital therapy, affair recovery, depression, anxiety, sexual abuse, eating disorders, parenting, trauma recovery, divorce recovery, and personality disorders. Carrie has also provided seminars on relationships, parenting and divorce recovery. She is awesome and you’re going to love her. Let’s get started!www.makemorelovenotwar.com

En la #Bisagra de hoy hablamos de lo pendiente: ansiedad. "Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking" (2005), Malcolm Gladwell En mis redes: @cristalpalacios
Malcolm Gladwell is a journalist, author and podcast maker. His first five books were on The New York Times Best Seller list. His sixth book, Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know about the People We Don't Know, was released in September 2019. The book examines interactions with strangers, and covers examples that include the deceptions of Bernie Madoff, the trial of Amanda Knox, the suicide of Sylvia Plath and the death of Sandra Bland. It challenges the assumptions we are programmed to make when encountering strangers, and the potentially dangerous consequences of misreading people we don't know. His previous books are well worth checking out too - The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference (2000); Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking (2005); Outliers: The Story of Success (2008); What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures (2009), a collection of his journalism; and David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants (2013). Jason Lee Whitlock is an American sports journalist. He co-hosts the daily sports TV show Speak For Yourself . Whitlock played Division I college football at Ball State as an offensive lineman. Here is the statement that really got my goat, It's hard to be a leader of Big Men, when you are not. Really… Really "No one ever considered heightism. It's the most basic prejudice in man, but it's the least talked about," says 5-foot-four-inch Joe Mangano, a salesman for a trademark research company in New York City Says Malcom Gladwell in his book "Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking," a New York Times bestseller, "There's plenty of evidence to suggest that height -- particularly in men -- does trigger a certain set of very positive, unconscious associations." Tall Men and Money For "Blink," Gladwell polled about half of the Fortune 500 companies and found that the majority of their CEOs were tall, white men, and: · The average CEO was just under 6 feet (the average American man is 5'9") · Among the CEOs, 58 percent were 6 feet or over · In the United States, 14.5 percent of men are 6 feet or over · Some 30 percent of the CEOs were 6'2" or taller · Only 3.9 percent of U.S. men are 6'2" or taller Now this has always struck a never in me, to claim due to my height that I am less of a person than someone taller. This was only fuel for me to be better than everyone in everything I did. Should I run my I'm the Shiza list. Nope not necessary. Just know my work ethic is derived from that Stereo type. All of this stemming from a quarter Tyler Murry who is shorter than the average Quarterback. I will admit he is disadvantaged and may not have longevity due to his ability to throw over taller linemen. But lets not detract from the fact that he is a Heisman winner, Oklahoma's seventh Heisman — and second consecutive — thanks to a remarkable season in which he accumulated 4,946 yards of total offense and 51 touchdowns while leading the Sooners to the College Football Playoff. So yes being 5-10 at QB is a challenge but not impossible, ask Doug Flutie. But you will say Hey Bryan You weren't in the NFL so you don't know the league Well Neither was Jason Whitlock, Stephen A Smith or Will Cain. Yet they are highly favored and Highly opinionated Sports Analyst. But of course I'm just a Youtuber scraping for views. I will say this I have more Trophies, Medals, Plaques and recognition than those obnoxious verbally aggressive blow hards. And I'm short, My Middle name is David and you know what he did. In his landmark bestseller The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell redefined how we understand the world around us. Now, in Blink, he revolutionizes the way we understand the world within. Blink is a book about how we think without thinking, about choices that seem to be made in an instant-in the blink of an eye-that actually aren't as simple as they seem. Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept? Why do some people follow their instincts and win, while others end up stumbling into error? How do our brains really work-in the office, in the classroom, in the kitchen, and in the bedroom? And why are the best decisions often those that are impossible to explain to others? In Blink we meet the psychologist who has learned to predict whether a marriage will last, based on a few minutes of observing a couple; the tennis coach who knows when a player will double-fault before the racket even makes contact with the ball; the antiquities experts who recognize a fake at a glance. Here, too, are great failures of "blink": the election of Warren Harding; "New Coke"; and the shooting of Amadou Diallo by police. Blink reveals that great decision makers aren't those who process the most information or spend the most time deliberating, but those who have perfected the art of "thin-slicing"-filtering the very few factors that matter from an overwhelming number of variables. Episode 59 of The Construction Leading Edge podcast from www.constructionleadingedge.com is an interview with Mark Breslin of Breslin Strategies, and in this construction podcast, we cover topics including the following: Why we need a well-led workforce, not just a skilled workforce. Common mistakes contractors make when it comes to their field level leaders. What is the ROI for investing in field leaders? Characteristics to look for when you're hiring or promoting leaders. How to move up in the ranks of your company if you're an up-and-coming leader. Key areas to train your leaders on. What progressive project owners understand about field leadership, and what they're doing to make sure they get it on their projects. We received some great feedback from some of you listening in InspHERation Nation, and we are inspired by your inspiration! In today's episode, we want to follow up on some emails we receive and discuss how giving yourself the freedom and permission to make choices that are for and about you can transform your day-to-day. What will you discover in this episode? A lot more about who Amanda is and what she enjoys Investing in yourself Why self-care isn't optional What we do to relax Morning routines Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell Welcome to InspHERation Nation! The Weekly Commitment Every week, we will ask you the same question: What is the one thing that you will commit to doing or improving this week? Writing down your answer to the question will start a self-accountability process, and following up with this practice after every episode will help you take consistent small actions that ultimately lead to BIG transformations. If you want to share what you are committing yourself to, we would love to hear! You can get in touch with us at... info@InspherationPodcast.com Facebook Twitter (@inspHERationpod) Be Good to Yourself (You Deserve It!) “You can only be as good for others as you are for yourself.” –Amanda Thomas McMeans An investment in yourself is probably the best way you can invest your time and energy! You will always receive a positive ROI when you invest in yourself. There are certain things that should be non-negotiable: the things that rejuvenate you and make you who you are. That's self-care, and it's not optional (if you want to maintain your health and sanity in the long-term). You can try this self-care experiment with Amanda: give yourself permission to do one thing that relaxes you every day. The Morning “How you feel when you start your day dictates your whole day.” –Amanda Thomas McMeans What you do and what you tell yourself in the morning can transform your whole day. One simple way to start your day off right is just setting aside 30 to 60 minutes for you – read, work out, take a walk, meditate, or whatever else makes you feel good. Don't Should on Yourself Don't think of self-care in terms of what you should do. Think of what you can do. It's the time you have for you, not a job! You don't have to wake up at 4 AM, work out, meditate, make a smoothie, and do an hour of work before the sun is up – set the bar somewhere realistic. The funny thing about Malcolm Gladwell is that everyone seems to enjoy reading him, but few remember many details of what he actually wrote. I had a conversation with a parent of one of my students not long ago about the overestimation of the importance of IQ, referencing some studies done by Lewis Terman. She listened with rapt attention and deep in thought. The information seemed new, original, and surprising to her. I mentioned that Malcolm Gladwell wrote about this in his book Outliers, to which she responded, "I read that book!" Apparently these things don't stick! Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking is one of Gladwell's many bestsellers. He seems to have an enduring interest in both psychology and in education, which means that he'll make several appearances on the podcast, even though he's "just a journalist". He seems to draw people in with his combination of Viking-quality storytelling and modern statistical and scientific thinking. It seems to me that his later books are more knowledge- and idea-rich, and his earlier ones are a bit more take-one-idea-as-far-as-you-can. The idea in Blink is that some apparent thinking is done without conscious processing (although Gladwell puts it in much sexier terms). For example, art critics know whether something is a genuine Greek sculpture or not because they can *feel* it, and they often can't explain why. Their intuitions can be - tend to be, in fact - more accurate than careful and detailed analysis and background investigations. What's going on here? If you've been paying attention to the podcast so far, you should see where this fits in with the themes we've been exploring. Several books so far have been concerned with something similar. Thinking, Fast and Slow is about cognitive biases, which are subconscious "wrong" thinking. The Power of Habit looked at how people can learn even when they can't form any long-term memories. "Picture yourself as a stereotypical male" dealt with stereotype threat, i.e. how people subconsciously fulfil stereotypes about groups they belong to. Apart from the idea of subconscious thinking, Gladwell also discusses some cases where this thinking is accurate, and others where it is wrong, or even disastrous. Surprise surprise, experts tend to have valid intuitions, whereas novices shouldn't trust their gut feeling. This idea of the differences between experts and novices is one reason why we're covering this book now, as our next theme for the coming weeks will be the question "how do people get good at things?". Enjoy the episode.
