Mike Dillon is a percussionist, vibraphonist, bandleader, singer-songwriter, and vocalist born in San Antonio Texas. He is a member of Critters Buggins, Les Claypool's Fancy Band, and Garage A Trois. He has performed with many musicians including Ani DiFranco, Galactic, Brave Combo, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Marco Benevento, Clutch, Claude Coleman Jr., and New Orleans musicians Kevin O'Day, Johnny Vidacovich, James  Singleton, and Ricky Lee Jones. Mike Dillon & Punkadelick makes its recorded debut with Inflorescence, an album of heady, instrumental rock highlighting a band deep in the throes of creative freedom, road tested and wild. Consisting of 10 tracks in 42-minutes, it's an expansive, focused and fearless collection, representing a world where Duke Ellington and Augustus Pablo rub shoulders with crate-digger exotica, the freak-funk of Parliament and the ‘anything fits' outsider ethos of acid-fried punks like The Meat Puppets. A trio featuring Mike Dillon (Ricki Lee Jones, Ani DiFranco, Les Claypool) on vibraphone, marimba, Prophet 6, congas, and bongos, Brian Haas (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) on Fender Rhodes, piano, bass Moog and melodica and Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce) on drums, cymbals and vocals, Punkadelick is the unified vision of six hands creating a world that often sounds like the work of an ensemble three times the size. During 2020 and 2021, while many music venues were still shuttered, the group began touring, sweating their way through cuts Dillon and Haas had composed during quarantine writing sessions. Locking in on stage, it quickly became clear the band was functioning at a level that made the hair on their arms stand at attention—even for three live music veterans accustomed to life on the road.   July 27th Mike and Punkadelick are playing the Grog shop in Cleveland OH tickets here! https://grogshop.gs/event-details/13536034/mike-dillon-punkadelic-hello-3d-c-level/   Mike's Info https://www.mikedillonvibes.com/

I've always enjoyed balancing my teaching and performing careers. I was fortunate to be the drummer for many DFW area bands during my time there, including Reverend Horton Heat, Brave Combo, and Eleven Hundred Springs. I'm based in Nashville now and have been working with several different bands/ artists, including American Idol- Finalist Josh Gracin and most recently, JD McPherson, who I spent two months on tour with this year opening for the legendary artists Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. A highlight in 2022 for me was spending a week as the house band guest drummer on NBC's “Late Night with Seth Meyers”! https://rjdrums.net/

It's our last podcast of 2022! So to celebrate the holidays, we focus on Christmas this episode. Despite striking out at Halloween and Thanksgiving, we give the holidays another shot and take a look to see if Brooke McEldowney has anything joyful or celebratory to say about Christmas. The answer is, of course, mostly no. We're exposed to a very weird "pickle leg," an inappropriately sexy ballet Santa, Edda's sexy knees, and there's even a fun Hitchcockian cameo from McEldowney himself. By "fun," we mean very, very confusing. Ultimately, Amos and Edda show us they have some serious Santa cosplay kink that they can't resist the gravitational pull of, even when their bedraggled-looking twins are nearby. Our exploration ends with McEldowney saying (through Edda) "God bless cartoonists." Because of course he does. It's just like the end of** A Christmas Carol**, only if Dickens was a pompous asshole. Which is our way of saying, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We'll see you in 2023! Texarkana native Carl Finch founded Brave Combo more than 40 years ago. Yeah, it's a polka band. But as you'll hear, Brave Combo is more than that. The group stands for independent thinking and creativity free from peer pressure. You could say the Brave Combo philosophy is that there's no such thing as a guilty pleasure. And it all started in a Woolworth store in downtown Texarkana. Brave Combo will be the musical headliner for Main Street Texarkana's Oktoberfest on the Line on Saturday, Oct. 15, downtown. Interview with Mike Dillon

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Mike Dillon over Zoom video! Mike Dillon has spent the last three decades performing well over 200 shows a year with both his own band, as well as playing vibraphone and percussion with artists including Rickie Lee Jones, Les Claypool and Ani DiFranco. So when the pandemic hit in early 2020 forcing Dillon off the road, he instinctively directed his perpetually restless creative energy to writing and recording. Recently relocating to Kansas City after spending 15 years in New Orleans, Dillon and producer Chad Meise would track a trilogy of albums: 'Shoot The Moon,' 'Suitcase Man' and '1918.' In collaboration with his longtime record label Royal Potato Family, they would offer the records exclusively via Bandcamp just days after they were mixed and mastered. In 2021, those albums now receive the full vinyl treatment, as well as complete digital release across all streaming outlets. The first of the three records, 'Shoot The Moon,' is a ten track collection that Dillon describes as "Punkadelic-Funk-Psych" focused heavily on the current political climate in the United States. Assembling an assortment of stylistically uncompromising musicians to contribute, its line-up features Matt Chamberlain, Steven Bernstein, Nicholas Payton, Robbie Seahag Mangano, Jean-Paul Gaster and Nick Bockrath among others. Highlights include the apocalyptic road warrior anthem "Drivin' Down The Road," a swirling New Orleans jazz-raga "Further Adventures in Misadventures" and the snarling punk rock diatribe "Quool Aid Man" with its indictment of the American right: "old men and their guns."The second recording in the series, 'Suitcase Man' is a nine-song cycle through which Dillon examine his life and choices made over the past 55 years. It's a distinct entry in his extensive discography, notable for its strikingly honest lyricism and minimalist arrangements that incorporate sparse vibraphone and percussion with a handful of background vocals by Tiff Lamson of Givers and frequent collaborator JJ Jungle. Songs like "Empty Bones," "Turkish Rose" and "Matthew" represent Dillon at his most creatively daring, while confirming his ascent into the upper echelon of cult music outsiders in the lineage of artists like Tom Waits, Harry Partch and Captain Beefheart.Dillon completes the trilogy with '1918.' The focal point here are Dillon's instrumentals: the dank and dark Moog/tabla/vibraphone psych vibe of "Pinocchio," (listen/share) the electro analog trance of "Pelagic" and the jungle groove, space rock of the title track. Dillon once again calls on friends like drummer Earl Harvin and guitarist Shane Theriot to assist. Thematically speaking, the material addresses the Covid-19 pandemic and recent social unrest. "The parallels between 1918 and 2020 are immense. We just have fancier toys, but the tunnel vision and mammalian tendencies are the same if not greater," explains Dillon.A native of San Antonio, Texas, Mike Dillon got his start as a sideman, playing in such varied projects as MC 900 Foot Jesus, Brave Combo and Secret Chiefs 3. He's also served as an integral member of bands like Critters Buggin, Garage A Trois, Dead Kenny Gs and Nolatet, while leading Billy Goat, Hairy Apes BMX and Malachy Papers. Under his own name, he's amassed an extensive catalog of genre-defying recordings. All Music called his most recent release 'Rosewood,' recorded prior to the 2020 pandemic lockdown, "a hypnotic album that pulls you deep inside a percussive, sylvan-toned dreamscape." Touring relentlessly, Dillon has built one of the most loyal fanbases on the underground music scene, while being invited to share bills with bands including Clutch, Umphrey's McGee and Dean Ween GroupWe want to hear from you! Podcast – The Children's Hour

This week on The Children's Hour, we explore the genre of science fiction with our musical friends from Ramah, New Mexico, MeriDean. This type of storytelling allows our imagination to become immersed in other worldly places, with advanced technologies, on exoplanets, or flying through space, and using actual science to help us believe the impossible. With excerpts of famous works of "Sci-Fi" like The War of the Worlds, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Slaughterhouse Five, and original pieces recorded by masterful storytellers, we immerse ourselves in futuristic fantasy. Plus the kids in the Extinction Diaries update us about the Sumatran Tiger, and how our use of palm oil is hurting their chance for survival. We are joined now by the acclaimed filmmaker and cinematographer, Louie Schwartzberg. He is the creator of what critics have described as a “mind-blowing,” and “consciousness-shifting” film called Fantastic Fungi. Produced by Schwartzberg's innovative Moving Art production company, the documentary explores the surprisingly key role that fungi -- a.k.a. mushrooms -- have played in the earth’s evolution, and the hope they present for securing the earth’s future. The film features renowned scientists and mycologists such as Paul Stamets, and bestselling authors and healing advocates such as Michael Pollan, Eugenia Bone and Andrew Weil, whose narratives guide us through the extraordinary complexity, beauty and importance of the fungi kingdom, and the solutions it might offer for humanity's most urgent medical, nutritional an environmental challenges. Schwartzberg's 81-minute film is now available for online rental from a variety of participating theaters around the country. Fantastic Fungi will aqlso become available on Apple TV on Tuesday, August 4 -- the same day that Schwartzberg launches his new podcast, called Wonder & Awe. Before that, on Sunday, August 2, Schwartzberg will be the Keynote speaker at the Logan Visionary Virtual Eco-Conference, presented by the American Visionary Art Museum. It’s a free public event but pre-registration is required, which you can do here. Louie Schwartzberg joins Tom from Los Angeles via Zoom. A note about other virtual offerings this weekend, at two of Baltimore’s premier music venues. Tonight at 8pm at An die Musik in Mt. Vernon, it's Folkal Point's exclusive broadcast of a show by the eclectic dance band Brave Combo. And mark your calendar for next Friday, August 7th at 7:00 at An die Musik, when the great pianist Lafayette Gilchrist teams-up with the acclaimed saxophonist David Murray for a livestream event. And at Keystone Korner Baltimore in Harbor East, tomorrow and Sunday at 3:00 in the afternoon, the great vibe masters Warren Wolf and Joe Locke will perform livestreamed shows with the bassist Jeff Reed. Born a flouting believer in Christianity, a young Maewyn Succat was captured by pirates and sold into slavery at a tender age of 16 where he tended to sheep. During that time of captivity, Maewyn strengthened his relationship with God through prayer; eventually leading to his conversion to Christianity. A few years after escaping captivity, young Maewyn, in a vision, was harkened “We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us” and walk among them, he did. Roaming the countryside he taught the message of Christianity through his analogical shamrock teachings and his legendary expulsion of ophidian creatures. Shedding the Succat name, he became the first successful evangelist of Christianity; The Apostle of Ireland, St. Patrick, and he is once again celebrated by virtue of devotion, tradition, and legend with music, dance, song and a celebratory pint or two. St. Patrick was born in England in 385AD, was captured by pirates as a child and brought to Ireland, at which time he was called to Christianity. He escaped his captors and returned to Ireland as a missionary. In his teachings, he combined Irish pagan beliefs with Christian sacraments, devising the Celtic Cross. St. Patrick is honored around the world on March 17th, the anniversary of his death in 461AD. Windy City Irish Radio pays homage to St. Patrick in a 90-minute St. Patrick's Day broadcast.
