Some sources claim the name originates from ancient Native American month names, while others point out that Harvest month was recorded as early as in the 700s in both Anglo-Saxon and Old High German languages. In ancient times, it was common to track the changing seasons by following the lunar month rather than the solar year, which the 12 months in our modern calendar are based on. The most common Native American names for the September Full Moon is Full Corn Moon and Barley Moon, and these names do not vary with the equinox. Regardless of where the name originated, the astronomical significance of the Harvest Moon is the same all over the Northern Hemisphere. The Full Moon closest to the September equinox is astronomically special because the time between one moonrise to the next becomes shorter around this time. Normally, the Moon rises on average 50 minutes later every day in a lunar month, which is the time it takes the Moon to travel through all the Moon phases. However, for a few days around the Harvest Moon, the Moon rises less than 50 minutes later than the day before. In the old days, the early moonrise for a few days around the equinox meant that farmers could work and harvest their crops for a longer time in the evenings. In our very first episode of "What's That Style?", we step away from IPA's and into the Marzen and Festbier styles. Adam also gives a little Oktoberfest history lesson while we taste four different beers!
This week Tanner, Jared, and Alan sit down to drink the differences between Pumpkin and Oktoberfest Beers. They also give a taste to one of the E.S.B brews from a local home-brewing competition. It's October which also means horror, which Brew Chatt will be discussing over beers all month long.

Eric should have went to bed after a raucous, after-hours work event, but instead he joins Dan and Evan on the mic for what is probably the most quotable episode of Beats, Beards & Brews yet! Evan held the previous record for drinking the most pre-pod, but Eric shatters that record and hits the mic with a vengeance. To Eric's credit he still hasn't completely sabotaged an episode. In Episode 42, incorrectly identified as Episode 41, Eric trashes on Arcade Fire's latest record Everything Now, and Evan and Dan can't really defend it either, but Evan kind of tries as per usual. Next, on the soon-to-be, first-ever, Grammy nominated episode of a podcast, Dan and Eric review an assortment of products from 1740 Beard Balm (Death Wish Coffee Beard Oil and Balm, Bay Rum Featherweight Balm and Bay Rum Soap) out of Kansas City. To close out the episode, Evan drops some legit background knowledge on Left Hand's Oktoberfest Marzen Lager, meanwhile Dan fails to research Sierra Nevada's Oktoberfest Festbier 2017. Eric struggles to review his beer (also Sierra Nevada). Post-Show Notes: Special thanks to Evan for all the brilliant editing work on this one. There is about 8 minutes of bonus audio that should never see the light of day, but never say never! Woof.
This week Jared and Tanner are sitting around the table to discuss Drug Dealer (not addiction) movies and to drink Oktoberfest Beers.

Season 1, Episode 18 - This week, we’re going to Germany and celebrating Oktoberfest! It’s Oktoberfest! This week on the show, we’re drinking four different German brews, three of which are Oktoberfest beers from Paulaner, Weihenstephaner, and Hofbräu, and the last, another beer from Weihenstephaner, their Korbinian doppelbock. Greg is studying for his Certified Cicerone® exam, and it just so happens that he’s researching Germany and its breweries and beers. Not only did he provide all of the beer for the show this week, he steps up and drops knowledge on the history of Oktoberfest and its beer. Oktoberfest Beers from Weihenstephaner, Hofbräu, and Paulaner. Also, Weihenstephaner Korbinian Doppelbock for good measure. Oktoberfest began as a festival in 1810 that lasted 16 days, from late September to early October, and celebrated the wedding of Prince Ludwig and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The beer made for the festival, called Märzen (which means “March”), was traditionally brewed in March, and lagered for four to five months. The 16-day beer-drinking extravaganza was closed with horse races, and then probably a good week or so of recovery. One really cool thing about these German imports is that they are very high quality brews that are fairly inexpensive. So, get together with your buddies, buy a couple cases of German brews, and learn about the roots and history of beer. Until next week, brew the shit out of it! Prost!
