NAB Cancels Prestigious Award for De Niro after Anti-Trump Tirade

In an unexpected turn of events, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has withdrawn the prestigious award initially meant for renowned actor Robert De Niro. The decision follows a public tirade by De Niro against former President Donald Trump. Standing outside the Manhattan courthouse amid Trump's trial related to hush-money allegations, on behalf of President Biden's campaign, De Niro lobbed accusations of Trump posing a 'threat to our democracy'. The actor's provocative remarks included hypothetical scenarios of Trump resuming office and refusing to leave, becoming a 'dictator for life'. De Niro wholeheartedly supported the Biden campaign's aggressive anti-Trump approach, insisting on highlighting and reminding voters of what he considered the threat Trump posed. The NAB, however, disagreed with this approach. The association had initially planned to present De Niro with their esteemed award the following week. However, his impassioned, politically charged discourse prompted them to reconsider. An NAB representative commented on the situation, emphasizing the bipartisan nature of their event, recognizing the important work of local broadcasters and partners from all political leanings. The representative further affirmed their support for every American's right to exercise free speech, but observed that De Niro's public engagements had the potential for overshadowing the prime focus of the event—acknowledging philanthropic efforts.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In April this year, Get Known got the chance to head to the U. S. National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) event in Las Vegas.  The event gave us an opportunity to interview Dan Shelley the President and CEO of the Radio Television Digital News Association or RTDNA. As you will hear, Dan has been a long-time journalist and newsroom leader who has had experiences over the decades setting the standard for how the biggest news organizations deliver news. Over that time he has been helping the industry transition from its analog roots to the digital area.  In our interview, we start with some history of the RTDNA and how it works today. We then get into the constitutional purpose of journalism for the American public and some of the differences between that and Europe's democracies.  Dan's own background is itself a history lesson in how broadcast journalism and digital news evolved in the U.S. We get into talking about the production of digital news, the advocacy work of RTDNA on behalf of journalists, and news ethics in a world increasingly driven by social media and polarized information.  The US broadcasting industry and how news is made in Europe have many similarities but have so many interesting differences from how things are done. As we in Europe engage with US media and make our mark, it is so important to take these understandings into consideration. The market in the U.S. is so big and diverse. But like everywhere, social media and general digitalization have been huge factors in how information is consumed and it is great to see there are people like Dan Shelley in the mix helping the industry grow and develop.

The numbers are staggering. As the U.S. population grows, the number of local newsroom employees continues to decline, as an average of two newspapers shut down each week. Moreover, research shows that a shortage of local news harms the very fabric of our communities. With less new coverage comes more government corruption and local apathy regarding voting or civic involvement. And today, with large corporations and hedge funds who now own what was once vibrant family-owned local news operations and seek more profit by gutting newsrooms, less and less local reporting is taking place. This has created "ghost newspapers" that generate only a handful of stories each week that serve the common good. Over the past few years, some controversial bills have been introduced into Congress to tap into the large amount of locally available ad revenue that has been gobbled up by "big tech." Historically, that revenue was used to help fund local newsrooms. One of the bills that did not gain complete industry support was the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act" (JCPA), which, if passed, would give news publishers the ability to collectively negotiate with “big tech” platforms for content compensation. Other bills, like the Local Journalism Sustainability Act (LJSA), were floated to offer tax credits to help fund news operations. Some have said that the challenge facing our industry's advocacy has been our lack of ability to work with one common "voice," with different media associations working separately with other priorities and agendas. Today with the core mission of helping to advance public policies to counter the collapse of local news, revitalize community journalism and strengthen democracy, the Rebuild Local News Coalition (RLN) was started by Steven Waldman, who initially incubated the GroundTruth Project and Report for America. A recent RLN press release that announced the organization's gaining non-profit status lists members that include the Institute for Nonprofit News, the Local Media Consortium (LMC), the National Newspaper Publishers Association, the Association of Alternative Newsmedia (AAN), the National Association of Hispanic Publishers and the Local Independent Online News Association (LION). The News Guild-CWA, one of the largest news labor unions in the country, is also part of the coalition. When asked why large, established industry lobbying and advocacy organizations like the News/Media Alliance (NMA), National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and America's Newspapers were notably absent from the list, Waldman responded that the coalition wished to maintain a more local focus when it came to member news media organizations. And even though these groups were not listed members of the RLN, they have and will coordinate with them when it is warranted. The RLN has reportedly raised close to $1-million dollars in philanthropic donations from Ford Foundation, Knight Foundation, MacArthur Foundation and Microsoft Corporation. In this 172nd episode of "E&P Reports," we go one-on-one with Steven Waldman, co-founder of Report for America and chair of the Rebuild Local News Coalition, an alliance of local news organizations that has recently become an independent nonprofit planning to advance a range of public policies addressing the accelerating crisis in local news threatening so many communities. E&P Publisher Mike Blinder asks Waldman why the new coalition is necessary and what its priorities are, what initiatives they are championing and how they can help move public policies along on a state and national level, including payroll tax credits, proposals to target government advertising spending toward local news instead of social media and reducing the influence of hedge funds on local newspapers.

Here's the 2020 TVs with Next Gen TV tuners built-in - CNET Free 4K TV over the air is rolling out this year all across the US. It's called Next Gen TV, aka ATSC 3.0, and it promises a revolution not just in resolution -- for the first time you'll be able to watch 4K via an antenna -- but in how you watch broadcast TV. Over 60 stations in 40 markets already are, or are planning to start transmitting before the end of the year. TVs LG ZX: 77- and 88-inch 8K OLED TV WX: 65-inch 4K OLED TV with "wallpaper" styling. GX: 55-, 65- and 77-inch 4K OLED TV with ultrathin profile. These are all OLED and all relatively high-end. The mainstream-priced CX and BX models won't get Next-Gen TV tuners, and neither will any of the LCD-based (aka NanoCell) TVs LG announced. Samsung Q950TS: A bezel-less 8K flagship model in 65-, 75- and 85-inches. Q900: Step-down 8K model without that fancy styling.  Q800: Entry-level 8K model. As of this writing, Samsung has only announced Next Gen TV support in its 8K TVs. None of the company's 4K TVs have Next Gen TV tuners. Sony X900H: 55-, 65-, 75- and 85-inch 4K LCD Though no pricing was announced at CES, based on the technology and model number, these are Sony's midrange models, and should be cheaper any of the Samsung or LG TVs listed above. None of Sony's higher-end OLED and LCD TVs for 2020 will have Next-Gen TV tuners. Tuners and set-top-boxes Most of you reading this probably aren't interested in getting a new TV just for Next Gen TV. Nor should you be. If you don't want to get a new TV, but still want to watch free over-the-air 4K TV, you'll be able to buy an external tuner. There were a few companies at CES discussing set-top-boxes, though neither pricing nor availability were made official. We'll likely get more info along those lines at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) expo in April. Zapperbox is one of those companies. It's working with BitRouter, a company that's been around since the early ATSC 1.0 days. Another company is Apollo, a company that works behind-the-scenes with public TV broadcasters. They're working on an Android-based modular system design.

This episode was chosen by a poll on Twitter. The poll had Infomercial, Infotainment, Bennifer, and Brangelina. The latter two had zero votes - so I someone is trying to tell me something.   On to the winner -Infomercial.   "Information" plus "Commercial." is actually a more recent version of an earlier portmanteau - "Advertorial" as in "advertisement" and "editorial." which Merriam Webster dates back to 1946. Most of us have been up late at night or at different periods of the day only to see things that will quote unquote make our lives easier. This portmanteau is so commonly used that we just throw it around. But what is an infomercial? Is is ShamWow? Is it a Ron Popiel product so wonderfully covered by Weird Al Yankovic in his song "Mr. Popeil?" Or can it even be used by a presidential candidate? Well.... Yes. The first known informercial was Vitamix blender in 1949 however they didn't really catch on because in the 1960s, the Federal Communications Commission FCC and the National Association of Broadcasters NAB set limits on the number of commercial minutes allowed per hour of programming. They also required that all commercials be clearly identified as such. Many of today's infomercials would not meet that standard. However many advertisers used cable as an outlet as the restrictions were not applied there. Things started to turn in 1979 when the Justice Department sued the NAB in US V. National Association of Broadcasters It was an anti-trust claim and stated that limitations allowed commercial minutes per hour inflated prices by artificially restricting airtime availability. Then in 1981 The FCC lifted the prohibition on program-length advertisements on radio followed by the NAB dropping its code in 1982. Infomercials fully returned to broadcast TV in 1984 after President Ronald Reagan's FCC lifted its restrictions on the amount of commercial time permitted during the broadcast day. Over the years infomercials have been used to sell all kinds of products - especially expensive items that take more time to justify price. They also have been used for televangelists - another portmanteau, psychics, get-rich quick schemes, and even Ross Perot used them in 1992 and again in 1996 for his presidential campaigns.   Informercials have become so common that they even have their own networks - Corner Store TV, Access Television Network and GRTV as well as the shopping networks like QVC and the Home Shopping Network.   Every hour of every day has an infomercial playing somewhere and they don't appear to be going away anytime soon.   Resources Mr Popeil https://youtu.be/9BX56syrmWQ Vitamix Commercial - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJ0uz6YdTcM https://www.thebalancecareers.com/what-exactly-is-an-informercial-38542 https://adage.com/article/adage-encyclopedia/infomercial/98718 https://www.justice.gov/atr/case/us-v-national-association-broadcasters

Podcast #682: Next Generation Broadcast TV

HDTV and Home Theater Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 10, 2015 44:26

Next Generation Broadcast TV The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) have their year meeting in Las Vegas in the Spring every year. When we worked for Sony Pictures we would get excited about going and demonstrating the gear we were developing as well as seeing what other companies were showing off. It was not quite as hectic as CES but it was still a great time. Nowadays we are a little more focused on what we take away from the NAB show. In particular of interest this year is the ATSC 3.0 specification.  This year there will be some demos of the technology. Layered Division Multiplexing This technology will cram more data into a single channel. Think of this as a bus traveling down the road where the road is the channel on your tuner. You can only get one lane of busses through that road. But what if now you had a double decker bus. On that same road you have doubled the data coming through to you. Its not as simple as just adding levels to the bus. Imaging a three level bus trying to go under an over pass. The main takeaway is that this technology will enable you to get UHD over the air while using only one channel. HEVC H.265 Compression is key to getting UHD content to you. Right now ATSC uses mpeg 2 and Blu-ray uses mpeg 4. With mp4 you get about a doubling of the data as you do with mp2. If you look at the current ATSC spec, television stations are transmitting streams of anywhere between 10 and 18 Mbps in mp2. You can get the same quality mp4 picture with streams of about 5 to 9 Mbps. And if you are using H.265 that drops to about 2.5 to 4.5 Mbps. But rather than give us current quality in less space, the goal is to give us better than Blu-ray quality picture and sound in the same spectrum (channel).  The National Engineering Center for DTV from Shanghai, China will be demonstrating  a full-chain Ultra HD TV system, which includes a UHD TV presentation system, as well as realtime UHD TV encoding, broadcasting, receiving and decoding. Targeted Ads, Better EPG, and Interactivity A US company will be showing off interactivity and rich media that won't require a second screen like a tablet or phone. Broadcasters will be able to insert local ads more easily and the EPG gets a makeover. Broadcasters will be able to transmit HTML 5 applications that will support voting and polling. Now you'll be able to vote for your favorite performer on whatever talent show you are watching right from your TVs remote.   Object Based Surround We're quite happy that its not too late to add this to the ATSC 3.0 spec. There are three competing standards to bring three dimensional sound into your living room. Of course you would expect Dolby's Atmos and DTS's DTS:X. But there is also one from Qualcomm and Technicolor. They are testing 60 sound tracks with each of the three systems.   When is it all going to Happen?   There is still plenty of time to enjoy your ATSC 2.0 TV. The specification won't be finalized until 2016 and then it will take years before the broadcasters and manufacturers have equipment ready to accept OTA UHD. Look for there to be a brief period where you will be able to buy an external UHD tuner. We wonder if they will provide vouchers to buy UHD to HDTV converters.
