How much automation should be integrated into your agency's processes?  When is automation a good idea, and when isn't it? Are your agency services diverse enough to withstand a shifting market? In this interview, learn from one agency owner who has grown her agency making very conscious decisions about what she'll need to build a business that stands the test of time. From avoiding heavy automation to building a team based primarily in the US while living in Romania, she considers all angles before making long-term plans and has pushed against some trends to find her path. In this episode, we delve into her journey and gather valuable insights on scaling an agency in the dynamic world of e-commerce. Alina Vlaic is the owner of AZRank, an e-commerce agency that offers tested and successful solutions for launching products across all e-commerce platforms. Alina shares her journey of starting her agency from scratch in 2018 and growing it to a 20-person team dedicated mostly to Amazon sellers, e-commerce businesses, and online entrepreneurs. She discusses the decisions she's made from the start, to do what felt best for the success of her agency. In this episode, we'll discuss: Choosing flexibility for long-term success. A global vision with a local agency approach. Expanding your agency's toolkit to survive market shifts. An Unexpected Journey from Amazon Seller to E-Commerce Agency Owner As an Amazon seller alongside her husband, Alina experienced firsthand the rollercoaster ride of e-commerce - including a devastating low that nearly derailed their dreams. It was during this time that she identified a gap in the market for services that were not being offered in the way she wanted. She saw some things were still missing in the 2017 Amazon landscape and set out to create a service that would address these needs for clients. After slowly building up her clientele from just a couple of friends to a full team to continue providing services, she found herself having created a business around Amazon sales. It was time to transition from a one-woman show to a structured business and start growing a team. Bucking the Trend: Choosing Flexibility for Long-Term Success While her peers rushed to embrace every new technology promising lightning-fast results and the industry pushed for automation at increasingly higher rates, Alina took the opposite stance. Although automation could have helped her grow tenfold, she's made the conscious decision to pump the brakes on this high-speed approach. The soul of her service lies in its flexibility - a quality she fears would be sacrificed on the altar of full automation. She's not willing to trade the ability to adapt and tailor her offerings for the sake of rapid expansion. Without flexibility, she would not be able to offer efficient services. Executing a Global Vision with a Local Agency Approach When Alina set out to build her dream team, she knew that the human touch would be her secret weapon. She needed to ensure her clients received top-notch attention in their own time zones while avoiding the pitfalls of language barriers. If clients weren't receiving the right answers to their questions or didn't understand the agency's survey and processes, nothing would be ultimately accomplished. This is why she made the unusual and daring decision to hire a US-based team run remotely from Romania. Furthermore, she was also very conscious about empowering her team from the very beginning. One of the smartest decisions Alina has made was letting her current COO and first hire handle the hiring process of the rest of the team. After that, she's been “in the back seat” as she lets her team take over operations. It's a transition that many agency owners dream of but few achieve, often finding themselves trapped by their own need for control. Expanding Your Agency's Toolkit to Survive Market Shifts Alina started her agency with a focus on Amazon-dedicated services, but she quickly realized the need to expand into other areas like press articles and content generation. More than a response to market demand, this diversification was a strategic move to mitigate risks associated with relying on a single service offering. Her decision to diversify her services highlights the importance of staying agile and responsive to changing market dynamics. In today's fast-paced digital landscape, agencies need to be able to pivot and adapt to new trends and technologies. Alina had in mind after seeing many agencies have to completely reinvent themselves once the market changed and their entire business model went down the drain. By diversifying their services, agencies can not only capture new opportunities but also protect themselves from sudden shifts in the market that could potentially shut down their business overnight. Paulo Ribeiro is the founder of Two Things, a transformative agency for active lifestyle brands. With clients like The North Face, Timberland, and more, Paulo's expertise in brand advertising and global brand strategy has shaped industry leaders like Nike and Electronic Arts. We discussed all of this and more this week on the On Brand podcast. About Paulo Ribiero Paulo Ribeiro is the founder of Two Things, a brand transformation agency that focuses on the active lifestyle category. Two Things serves clients such as The North Face, Timberland, Visit Sun Valley, Mad Hippie, Converse, and Arc'teryx. Paulo began his career in brand advertising first in NYC and then in SF at Hal Riney+Partners, the first creatively led agency, during the dot com boom. At Wieden + Kennedy, he was head of global brand strategy for Nike and Electronic Arts through the era of digital transformation. He led the evolution of innovation agency Redscout to better serve Silicon Valley, working with Reid Hoffman on LinkedIn's positioning and expanding Gatorade's portfolio from beverages to food and digital products. Paulo was the Managing Director of one of the first Venture Studios-West SF, which was founded by Jack Dorsey to accelerate the growth of many of the world's most disruptive startups. His portfolio included Venmo, Jawbone, Twitter, Braintree, Square, Tumblr, and many others. More recently he led the creation of the Wieden + Kennedy Lodge the innovation agency, within the W+K Network, working with Nike's secretive Innovation Kitchen, Samsung, and Verizon as clients. The fruits of that labor contributed significantly to W+K earning Global Agency of the Year two years in a row. Paulo's work has been discussed in the New York Times, Fast Company, The Wall Street Journal, Ad Age, Adweek, Techcrunch, Monocle, The Guardian, Communication Arts, LA Times, Business Insider, and many other publications. Episode Highlights What is a lifestyle brand? Paulo and his team define it as, “any brand that encourages an active lifestyle” including both athletics and travel. What are the Two Things? The name of Paulo's agency comes from “the art of combining two unrelated things in an interesting way” to stand out in the crowded, distracted world we find ourselves in. The role of tension. Paulo and I spent a lot of our conversation talking about tension. Tension between the advertising industry and the Silicon Valley innovation mindset. Tension between scale and experimentation. This tension can play an important role in standing out today. What brand has made Paulo smile recently? First, Paulo threw it back to the EA and Nike collaboration, Dot Swoosh, that he referenced earlier. He then shared the amazing activation the Barbie team did with Ken and the Dream House. “Actions speak louder than words.” To learn more, check out the agency's website at TwoThings.co. The robot revolution has arrived. And they're coming for your marketing or content creation job. The advent of generative artificial intelligence chatbots—most notably tools like Chat GPT and Midjourney—is poised to revolutionize creative industries. These tools use deep learning technology to generate new content based on prompts from human users. But will this be the end of creativity as we know it, or a new implement to help creative people be even more creative? In this episode, we hear from "Jess," a copywriter who was laid off from her job at a well-known national logistics company and "replaced by Chat GPT." And then, we talk to Renato Fernandez, the Chief Creative Officer at the LA-based, global creative agency TBWA / Chiat / Day. They're a three-time honoree as one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies, have been recognized thrice as Adweek's Global Agency of the Year, and are seen as a pioneering leader in the incorporation of generative A.I. into the creative workflow. Together, Jess and Renato will generate a picture of an industry facing an inflection point... And, indeed, a battle for its very soul. On this week's episode of The RAG Podcast I was joined by https://www.linkedin.com/in/ACoAAAbY6xkBvXwYUAnMI0wIZYrpTRLjfUHVc1M (Jake), my little brother. One of the most charismatic and successful guys I know (and annoyingly good-looking!) We got into recruitment in Melbourne together in 2011. Later in Sydney, Jake became a recruitment owner in his mid 20's, but in 2016 he sold his shares in https://www.linkedin.com/company/thedrivegroup/ (TheDriveGroup.) He was building a great business but, for some reason, he wasn't happy. He put this down to being 'home sick' and moved back to the UK. In 2017 he launched https://www.linkedin.com/company/one-life-social-media/ (One Life Social Media )– a fast-growing 7-figure global digital marketing agency in the fitness industry. With no experience in the industry, he built a business that operated in 20 countries with over 600 clients, helping them with customer acquisition and lead generation online. He led a team of 20+ people too, all before the age of 30.  Jake had all the extrinsic measures of success that society says we need to find fulfillment and happiness – wealth, status, validation from others, approval, a growing company, recognition, etc. But something wasn't right. Over the next 2 years, Jake's life completely changed forever. He suffered the most severe anxiety and depression I have ever witnessed. Due to this, the pandemic, and realising he simply wasn't happy and needed to change, Jake closed down his second business.  I have watched him focus on recovering and embark on a journey of reconnecting to his mind, body, soul, health, consciousness, relationships, and life. I am so happy and proud to say that now he is a completely different person from two years ago. He is happy, healthy and present. Jake is now dedicating his life to helping other high performers who are suffering from the same issues of burnout, anxiety, and depression. I am going to warn you that this is an extremely raw account directly from Jake. He talks about the pain he suffered. How he even had suicidal thoughts (this breaks my heart.) But it's all true and I feel like the future is bright. "You have to learn how to make a friend before you can call him a friend." #OnTheWayToNewWork #Podcast58 #TheNewYorkTapes Patrick Harris has been working for 20 years in order to connect Madison Avenue with Silicon Valley. In doing so, he actively accompanied both - the development of the classic web search and the development from search to the social web. He was the first employee in the Global Agency Development team. He could co-develop the New York location of facebook from 25 to 2,000 employees. The decision to swap his corner office at Microsoft 7 years ago, for a job in the facebook company had several reasons. From the first moment, he felt that facebook was a mission-driven company that links hacker culture with the drive to share, connect and form communities. Above all, it was the employees of facebook who convinced him of this. One of the most common phrases he heard in his first months was the question: "How can I help you"? Facebook helps its employees to build a sustainable career. An internal program called FUEL is about developing an individual plan. There are different components, and each team decides for itself whether they use it. When communicating with his team, Patrick strives to reach each of his direct reports as often as possible on their preferred communication channels. So in his experience, there are people who are more likely to belong to the category "phone guy", whilst others prefer Messenger, Workplace or WhatsApp and others again prefer it by mail. It does not surprise us that facebook workplace is the most used channel. For Patrick it is the "natural extension of our culture". In this episode, we talk to Patrick about the 'meeting culture' within the facebook organization and get to know some exciting "hacks" here. For example, Patrick and his team are increasingly using "24 hour pre-reads" and he encourages his people “to present the last page first”. Facebook gives its employees the freedom not to go to meetings, if they feel they can not contribute to or profit from it. There are (developer) teams who have agreed on a "no meeting Wednesday". The offices of facebook also have a special meaning behind them. For Patrick, who flies 250,000 to 300.000 miles a year, it always feels like coming home. Besides this fact, the office is always "unfinished by design" to remind everyone that facebook is not finished yet. With very personal insights into his working style, his way of learning and communicating with his family, we come to an end and wonder again how quickly time has passed. About the Episode Why does our culture support the fallacy that men climb the job ladder while women climb the to-do list? Lee and Gail discuss a cultural shift that encourages women to take on key leadership roles.   About Gail Gail Heimann is President of Weber Shandwick, one of the world’s leading global communications and engagement firms with a network extending to 127 cities in 81 countries. Gail brings a relentless pursuit of ideas that touch, move, build, transform and deliver results for clients. She helps accelerate innovation and activation across the firms global practice areas, digital services and analytics operations. Gail has helped to build brands and burnish reputations for leading clients in the personal care, food and beverage, quick service restaurant, healthcare, finance and technology categories including work with PepsiCo, Unilever, GSK, Mattel, Electrolux, Aetna, General Motors, Microsoft and Verizon, among others. Gail was a catalyst in Weber Shandwick being named as the only PR agency on Advertising Ages Agency A-List in 2014 and 2015 and a Standout Agency for 20167, as well as PRWeeks 2017, 2016 and 2015 Global Agency of the Year, and The Holmes Reports 2015 and 2014 Global Agency of the Year. PRWeek’s 2016 and 2015 U.S. Agency of the Year, PRWeeks 2016 and 2015 Global Agency of the Year and The Holmes Report’s Global Agency of the Year for 2015 and 2014. She was president of the Public Relations Jury at the 2012 Cannes Lions and a member of the inaugural jury for the Glass Lions, which celebrates work that breaks through gender bias and stereotypes. Gail was honored with The Holmes Reports Individual Achievement Award in 2017, celebrated as one of the sharpest creative and strategic minds in the business. PRWeek also included her on its prestigious U.S. Power List in 2017. In 2016, Gail was inducted into PRWeek’s inaugural Hall of Femme, recognizing female trailblazers in communications. She was also named to The Holmes Reports 2015 North America Innovator 25 list, which celebrates individuals who accelerate innovation and push boundaries within the public relations industry. Earlier in her career, Gail was an Advertising Age Woman to Watch. She is a proud member of the boards of the PR Council, LaGrant Foundation and She Runs It. Gail and her husband have two daughters and live in New York City.   Key Takeaways Men are climbing the ladder and women are climbing the to-do list. Bring transparency to how you make business decisions. Millennials want as much information as possible. We need to provide a better level of business training to provide equality in leadership. Be a leader first. Start without the battle. Then contemplate where the other issues fall. Role modeling is so important - you have to see it to be it. Companies are recognizing the importance of culture and values, in light of what consumers demand. Brands like Mattel are celebrating the diversity of women and working hard to understand culture and relevance.
