This week on the Arts to Heart Podcast, our host Charuka Arora has an insightful conversation with Richa Maheshwari, who is a designer on a mission to bring back the arts and crafts that are fading due to the advent of fast fashion. Richa has been in the software services industry by profession, where she worked as a product manager for a German company for almost 16 years. As COVID hit, much like everyone else, Richa took a break to spend more time at home. This was her chance to restart and explore, and she took it. After going to an office for so many years, Richa longed to be on the ground where she could do something much more substantial and tangible, and that is when she was able to connect to an international labor organization which marked the beginning of her life with traditional crafts. As a child, Richa was always interested in stories that were rich in culture, and now she has the opportunity to tell those stories to the rest of the world in an innovative way. With its textile legacy, Odisha has many stories to tell, and so Richa decided to direct her energy towards uplifting the local artisan community in a way that helped the artists as well as introducing their craft to the world. For Richa, it is very much about the “ability to build narratives in a fun way so that the audience is able to receive it simply”. As she built her brand, Boito, Richa has had many things to learn and unlearn. From forming trustworthy relationships with the local community to finding a balance where their culture and traditions can be shared with the rest of the world, Richa has come a long way. She has opened doors for other artists who dream of utilizing their craft in a way that doesn't succumb to the fast fashion industry. So, tune in to this week's podcast to listen to Richa and Charuka talk about the world of fashion and why it's important for us as a society to not lose touch with our roots. This week on Arts to Hearts Podcast, our host Charuka Arora has the pleasure of sitting down with Ali Hval who was the Emerging Woman Artist Award Winner 2023 edition. Ali is a visual artist in Iowa who deals with fabric, installation, ceramic, and painting. Her interest in adornment and the politicization of the body is reflected through the forms and materials she uses in her artworks. In this week's episode, Ali talks about how she became an artist, what inspires her art, and how she was able to navigate her career. From painting as a young girl to going to grad school to finally starting her own art career, Ali always had a rebellious nature where she looked at the world in a different light. In many ways, her art challenges the traditional feminine and masculine dichotomy. With her pom-poms, glitters, chains, and locks, she is combining different elements and is redefining the spectrum that aims to put people in boxes. Just like other artists, balancing creativity and art has been a struggle for Ali. Being an avid muralist, Ali has completed over 40 projects in various communities across the country, projects that have provided her the financial stability she needs. However, combining her style with her murals has been a challenge for her, something she is still figuring out. Ali also touches on the subject of being the winner of the ATH emerging artist award, and how she feels about the entire process. She links it with her disappointments and rejections in the past, and how everything in her life has led her to this moment, for which she is truly grateful. To find out more about Ali and how she found her niche and dealt with challenges as an artist, tune in to this week's ATH podcast. She wants to assure all her fellow artists out there that creative blocks are totally normal! Charuka wholeheartedly encourages artists to embrace and accept these blocks as a part of the creative process. During the episode, Charuka generously shares her personal strategies for dealing with creative blocks. She starts off by talking about managing the content we consume digitally. Instead, Charuka advises intentionally selecting content that inspires and motivates us. Furthermore, Charuka emphasizes the importance of grounding ourselves during a creative block. This week, we’re back to our usual interview flow. I'm so simultaneously energized and chilled out by today's guest, Alix Kram. I first met Alix last year when I rolled stowaway on my husband’s business trip to Nashville. Alix and I got to talking at a Women in Music event planned by past podcast guest, Nicole Barsalona. Within about 30 seconds, I recognized I was in the presence of a super-duper smart, creative woman who likely doesn’t realize there’s even a box to think outside of. My next thought was, “How can I get Alix to say yes to the podcast?” Let’s talk about Alix for a minute. She is Vice-President of Global Brand Licensing for the Artist Services at Warner Music Group. Previously, she led KramCollective, where she helped industry professionals extend into the retail and lifestyle spaces. That was after Alix spent 10 years at Nickelodeon, where she was the V.P. of Lifestyle and Retail Marketing. I know, I know. That’s a lot of titles and kind of jargon-y, but we’ll break down what that actually means in the episode. Alix shows up - far beyond the titles and work stuff - as a woman who really knows how to live a full life. In this episode, you’ll hear Alix and I discuss her work helping artists build their brand, her shift from her post-collegiate career to what she does now (btw, not a smooth, comfortable one), and how she balances her energy as, in the words of Todd Henry, an on-demand creative. Plus, we talk about understanding fear, embracing discomfort, and learning to trust yourself. Alexis Rodich is the Director of Artist Services at Bandsintown, the #1 live concert tracking and discovery application on Facebook that Billboard recently said “rules the roost by a long shot”. Since joining the company as part of the founding team in 2009, Rodich led Bandsintown’s marketing and business development strategy in its artist services division, resulting in adoption of Bandsintown’s platform by artists from Skrillex and Justin Bieber to Alabama Shakes and Tim McGraw; reaching 20 million users each month. BIT just launched its own Spotify app last week. She has also brokered a number of partnerships with leading labels, management companies, and other industry players, all contributing to Bandsintown’s rapid growth and subsequent acquisition by leading mobile and social application developer Cellfish in September 2011.
What goes into the making of a piano? How do the pianos of today differ from those which Liszt or Debussy might have played? In the central London workshop of Steinway's, there are stripped down pianos everywhere, skeletons with their strings and frames exposed, and benches with vices and chisels like any carpenter would use. The scene is much like it would have been a hundred years ago, and Steinway still employs apprentices who are trained in the craft and art of piano maintenance. Ulrich Gerhartz, their Director of Concerts and Artist Services explains what goes into the crafting of Steinway's delicately balanced instruments, and pianist Stephen Hough reflects on how changes in the manufacture of pianos means that the sounds he makes today are very different from the virtuosi of the past.
Estelle Woodward Arnal (Director of Artist Services, Dance Theater Workshop) and Levi Gonzalez (dancer-choreographer) join me today to talk about DTW's Outer/Space Creative Residency Program. Levi Gonzalez is an independent choreographer living and working in New York City who has created a body of solo and group choreographic projects. He is interested in presenting work in a variety of venues and contexts, from small and intimate spaces to more traditional stages. Often the placement of the work in a certain environment shapes the content. Gonzalez is interested in furthering a dialogue of ideas about the body in society-at-large and about how we experience physical presence. He has gradually distanced himself from dance that concerns itself with the abstract designing of movement as an end in itself and towards work that addresses performance and the power and meaning of embodiment in daily life. His work and his choreographic collaborations with Luciana Achugar have been presented by Movement Research at Judson Church, Dance Theater Workshop, The Kitchen, Danspace Project, PS122, Dixon Place, and PS1 Contemporary Art Center. He has performed extensively with Donna Uchizono Company and John Jasperse Company, as well as ChameckiLerner, Jeremy Nelson and Dennis O’Connor. Additionally, he has worked for Michael Laub’s Remote Control Productions in Europe. Levi teaches technique and composition at Movement Research and with Dean Moss at The Kitchen. He was a Movement Research Artist in Residence from 2003-2004 and a 2006 NYFA Fellow in Choreography. He is an editor of Critical Correspondence, an online publication, and facilitates artist dialogues through Dance Theater Workshop’s Fresh Tracks Residency.
