- Ongoing conflict between Palestinians and Israelis has resulted in a tragic loss of civilian lives on both sides. - Casualty statistics: Hamas's attack has caused 1200 killed, 2700 injured, and 125 hostages, while Israel's attack has led to 1537 killed (including 1/3 children) and 5184 wounded. Israeli forces have dropped 6000 bombs on Gaza. - According to the UN, Israeli bombing has destroyed 11 mosques, damaged 90 schools, and caused damage to 752 buildings, resulting in 280,000 Palestinians becoming homeless. - The root cause of the conflict is the decades of occupation and a blockade of Gaza Strip, which Western leaders are ignoring. - Palestinians face criticism regardless of their method of resistance: military resistance labels them as "terrorists," while verbal resistance makes them "provocateurs." - Despite recognizing Israel 30 years ago, the Palestinian Authority has seen communities evicted in the West Bank, new Israeli settlements, and 224 isolated West Bank ghettos. - In the West Bank, 248 Palestinians have been killed, and 5300 Palestinians are in Israeli jails, with 1260 of them held with no charge. - Israeli Defense Minister ordered a siege on Gaza Strip, leading to a humanitarian crisis, which the UN human rights chief denounced as prohibited under international law. - Canada is urged to uphold its commitment to international human rights and support the International Criminal Court's jurisprudence in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories. - A call to action is made to visit the National Council of Canadian Muslims' website and send a letter to the Canadian government. - Peace cannot be achieved without addressing the root cause of the conflict, and the cycle of violence will continue if it remains unaddressed. Future lawyer and proud Marsh Iraqi Nur Al Ebeid joins us today to discuss. Nur is working toward her dual degree juris doctor from uOttawa and masters in international affairs from Carleton University. The daughter of refugees, Nur was born in London, ON — a small southwestern Ontario city near the U.S. border. Southern Iraq's marshlands, also known as the Mesopotamian marshes, are still considered by some to be the cradle of civilization. Nur's family were forced out of this region when Sadam Hussein drained these marshes in the 1990s, wiping out thousands of homes and countless wildlife. The original Garden of Eden was once found in this sacred region. Today these once lush, vast marshes are mostly desert. In this episode, we hear from Nur about her ancestors' way of life in الاهوار بلاد ما بين النهرين. Four of the five family members were killed. The incident sparked horror and outrage. But the truth of the matter is anti-Muslim sentiment has been on the steady rise in the 20 years since 9/11.According to a report from July 2021 by the National Council of Canadian Muslims, more Muslims have been killed in Canada in targeted attacks and hate crimes than in any other G7 country. Our guest today says that instead of deterring anti-Muslim hate, Canadian laws are actually making it worse - in essence, legalizing Islamophobia.Natasha Bakht is an award-winning legal scholar who has spent the past five years researching the rise in anti-Muslim attitudes in North America. In her new book Under Siege: Islamophobia and the 9/11 Generation (McGill-Queen's University Press, 2022) Jasmin Zine explores the experiences of Canadian Muslim youth as they navigate the landscape of Islamophobia, anti-Muslim racism, global war on terror, and the security industrial complex. By centering the voices of Muslim youth in Canada from the 9/11 generation, the study captures the complex nexus of oppressions experienced by Black and racialized Muslims as they navigate government policies of securitization, university campus culture, news media, and popular culture. Zine also examines how Muslim youth storytellers are creating intentional and resistant counterpublics through artistic and creative productions to disrupt reductive portrayal of Muslims in Canada. The book will be of interest to those who think and write about Islamophobia, Muslim youth, and Islam in Canada, but it will also be of interest to the general reader, particularly those who work in the civic and public sectors, such as educators. With Aadil Nathani of Green Ummah Where can you find passages about respecting nature in the Quran? How does environmentalism fit into the Five Pillars of Islam? Why is it so important to focus on solutions to our various environmental challenges? Where does all of this fit into environmental education? Aadil Nathani, one of the co-founders of Green Ummah, joined us to discuss these questions, lead listeners through a sample lesson from the Green Ummah Curriculum on environmental racism, and share some tips for making Ramadan more green. Aadil also shared his insights on how Muslim and non-Muslim folks can collaborate on a shared vision toward a greener and more just present and future. Guest (from greenummah.org): Aadil Nathani is a graduate of the University of Toronto (Hons. B.A.) and University of Windsor - Faculty of Law (J.D). He is currently working as a lawyer for the City of Windsor. While at Windsor Law, Aadil was involved in a collaborative project focused on municipal solutions to climate change. This experience encouraged Aadil to think about the urgent need to address climate change on different fronts, the responsibility that we each have to take care of the planet, and the deeply-rooted impacts of environmental racism. Aadil co-founded Green Ummah with the hope that it can serve as a conduit between the Muslim community and the environmental (and environmental justice) movements in Canada and beyond. Green Ummah is a grassroots organization that seeks to create an environmental and environmental justice movement in the Canadian Muslim community. Our goal is to plant seeds for conversation about the responsibility of the Muslim community towards a healthy equitable planet. We aim to provide pathways for Muslims to integrate sustainable living into their daily lives, to educate Muslims regarding their role as Khalifa's (stewards) of the planet, and to promote equitable access to nature spaces for Muslims. Today's episode is with Alberta Leader, Dr. Muna Saleh. In this conversation, I speak with Muna about our stories as mothers, women, and educators. You will learn about the danger of the single story and how—as individuals—we might try to categorize ourselves and others into one box. Dr. Saleh shares with us how she intentionally disrupts this single story narrative, whether it's through her research, her interaction with her students, or using humour on her Twitter feed.We also speak to difficult stories. And why it's so important as adults not to minimize difficult conversations with our children or students. But at the same time, we must provide a way forward with our stories, we must provide an element of hope and action. Finally, Dr. Saleh speaks to stories that have been planted within us, and that grow within us, often without our knowing. Narratives such as being the "good" mother, the "good" daughter, the "good" teacher. And how we can recognize them and—with the support of other women—re-story our own personal narratives.About Dr. Muna Saleh:Dr. Muna Saleh is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Education at Concordia University of Edmonton. Drawing upon her experiences as a Canadian Muslim woman, mother, educator, and researcher, Muna's doctoral research was a narrative inquiry into the experiences of Canadian Muslim girls and their mothers. Prior to graduate studies, she was an elementary and secondary school teacher and leader. Her research interests include multiperspectival narrative inquiry, mothering and motherhood, conceptions of curriculum, familial curriculum-making, and research alongside children and youth with disabilities and their families. She is the authour of, "Stories We Live and Grow By: (Re)Telling Our Experiences as Muslim Mothers and Daughters."  Dr. Muna Saleh is a mother, wife, daughter, writer, researcher and advocate. Everything carries this tone of positivity that can become toxic. This view leads us to push down our feelings of overwhelm or stress instead of doing the hard work of taking care of our mental and physical health. If we look at another aspect, we are regularly told that we should be great full and say Alhamdulillah when the problem is not gratitude. It's stress, depression, anxiety, and feeling overwhelmed because of the emotional workload we have as women. How do we change this collectively so that our mindset, life expectations, and outlook are better? We hope you've enjoyed this episode.
