It was a busy week in civic politics in New West - which translates into another great For the Record podcast!Starting off the top the discussion focuses on the federal election and some political prognostications. Who will pull it out of the hat on Monday in the New Westminster-Burnaby-Maillardville riding? Will the NDP's Peter Julian have the opportunity to be in Parliament for a quarter century? Or will upstart Liberal Jake Sawatsky make an upset victory? Could the Conservative's Indy Panchi surprise the pollsters? What about the final tally at the national level?A motion has finally been submitted to removed the USA flag from Queen's Park and replace it with the City of New Westminster flag. But will the motion be defeated due to the fact our local flag is simply 'too colonial'?You're hired! That's what New West City Council will be saying very soon as they undertake a process to hire a new city manager. The current city manager will be retiring early next year and the recruitment process is about to get underway. What is a Pop Up City Council office and why will one be installed on the boardwalk near the Samson V floating museum on Saturday April 26th from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm?The 'independent' governance review of Metro Vancouver is underway and a familiar face was interviewed as part of that process. Will the process yield real change? Why has there been almost no news when it comes to getting answers about the Metro Vancouver Wastewater Treatment Plan cost overruns? What's with all the silence and lack of transparency?Another successful Councillor Cafe was held in Queen's Park last week. It was a full house and there were lots of great comments and questions! What is the NWP doing when it comes to recruiting council and school board candidates for 2026? Is there an update? Who could they be talking to about running for Mayor and council? Tune in to get the inside track! All this and much more in the latest edition of FTR with Daniel Fontaine and Paul Minhas. Full Text of ReadingsThursday of the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 404The Saint of the day is Saint Peter Julian EymardSaint Peter Julian Eymard’s Story Born in La Mure d'Isère in southeastern France, Peter Julian's faith journey drew him from being a priest in the Diocese of Grenoble in 1834, to joining the Marists in 1839, to founding the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in 1856. In addition to those changes, Peter Julian coped with poverty, his father's initial opposition to Peter's vocation, serious illness, a Jansenistic overemphasis on sin, and the difficulties of getting diocesan and later papal approval for his new religious community. His years as a Marist, including service as a provincial leader, saw the deepening of his Eucharistic devotion, especially through his preaching of Forty Hours in many parishes. Inspired at first by the idea of reparation for indifference to the Eucharist, Peter Julian was eventually attracted to a more positive spirituality of Christ-centered love. Members of the men's community which Peter founded alternated between an active apostolic life and contemplating Jesus in the Eucharist. He and Marguerite Guillot founded the women’s Congregation of the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament. Peter Julian Eymard was beatified in 1925 and canonized in 1962, one day after Vatican II's first session ended. Reflection In every century, sin has been painfully real in the life of the Church. It is easy to give in to despair, to speak so strongly of human failings that people may forget the immense and self-sacrificing love of Jesus, as his death on the cross and his gift of the Eucharist make evident. Peter Julian knew that the Eucharist was key to helping Catholics live out their baptism and preach by word and example the Good News of Jesus Christ. Saint of the Day, Copyright Franciscan Media

Cardinal Manuel Clemente, the patriarch of Lisbon, was the main celebrant for the Tuesday evening outdoor liturgy, held at Eduardo VII Park. “Let us learn from Mary to greet each and every person. Let us intensely put it to practice this World Youth Day,” he said. “The new world begins in the newness of every encounter and in the sincerity of the greeting we exchange, so that we may be people among people, in a mutual and constant visitation. “I wish you all a happy and inspiring World Youth Day,” he said. Pope Francis is expected to arrive for the festivities today, Wednesday the second. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/254967/world-youth-day-2023-lisbon-patriarch-greets-attendees-at-opening-mass The first-ever perpetual eucharistic adoration chapel in Manhattan, New York, has been installed at the Dominican-led Church of Saint Joseph in the Greenwich Village neighborhood. The idea for the chapel was that of Archbishop of New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who desired opportunities for perpetual eucharistic adoration in the city, where there was none, according to Father Boniface Endorf, OP, pastor of the Church of Saint Joseph. The chapel will only be accessible to those who have a key card, which they can sign up for at the parish during office hours. The chapel, which can seat approximately 25 adorers with eight choir stalls for the Dominican friars, is located in the rectory next to the church. The chapel is on the first floor, where the parish offices are also located. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/254965/first-ever-perpetual-adoration-chapel-in-new-york-city-installed-at-greenwich-village-parish The incorrupt body of Saint Benedict the Moor, a 16th-century son of slaves who joined the Franciscans and would become the patron saint of African missions, has been all but destroyed after a wildfire engulfed the Sicilian church where he had been interred. A post shared by the parish of Santa Maria di Gesù showed that the body of the saint, whose dark skin and devotion to the enslaved has made him especially beloved among descendants of slaves, has been mostly incinerated, with only a few bone fragments remaining. The body of Blessed Matthew Agrigento, another Sicilian Franciscan whose body had been kept in the church, was also seriously damaged. Located in the Sicilian capital of Palermo, the Church of Santa Maria di Gesù caught fire on July 25 after a wildfire spread down the slopes of Monte Grifone. Wildfires have scorched the Italian island in the midst of searing summer heat, killing at least three people. Benedict the Moor was canonized in 1807. He is the patron of African missions and African Americans, and several historically African-American Catholic churches in the US bear his name. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/254959/body-of-saint-patron-of-african-americans-significantly-damaged-in-sicilian-church-fire Today, the Church celebrates Saint Peter Julian Eymard, who helped many Catholics - both clergy and laypeople - to rediscover the importance of the Eucharist. He is also considered a pioneer in involving laypeople more actively in the life of the Church. In 1851, he answered a call to establish a community of men dedicated to Eucharistic Adoration, called the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. Its mission was to promote the importance and significance of the Eucharist. The congregation also worked with the poor and helped them to prepare for first Communion. Peter Julian died in 1868 and was canonized in 1962. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-peter-julian-eymard-551

He and Marguerite Guillot founded the women's Congregation of the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament.

August 2: Saint Peter Julian Eymard, Priest1811–1868Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: WhiteApostle of the Holy EucharistThe Eucharist was the pearl that shone in his eyesThe great artist Auguste Rodin, who sculpted “The Thinker” and other world-famous pieces, met today's saint in 1862 and joined his Congregation as a lay brother. Rodin was despondent over the death of his sister and wanted to abandon art and dedicate his life to God. Saint Peter Julian Eymard burned like a bonfire for God, but this was one vocation his flames would not consume. Father Eymard could see Rodin's prodigious talent in an evocative bust Rodin sculpted of the future saint while Rodin was a religious brother. Eymard told Rodin to return to the world to pursue his artistic calling. So while Father Eymard was as apostolic and demanding as any saint, he was also just as wise as any saint. Not every man who felt a vocation truly had one. It was for the superior to discern the validity of the calling. Father Eymard knew this well from personal experience. He had lived at least three priesthoods inside of his one priesthood: as a diocesan priest in a parish, as a religious priest in the Marist Order, and as the founder of the Congregation of the Most Blessed Sacrament. There was never a time when Peter Julian Eymard did not love Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. At the age of five, he disappeared from home one day. His siblings went in search and found him standing right next to the tabernacle in their local church. When they asked him what he was doing there, little Peter responded, “I am here listening to Jesus.” His father did not want Peter to be a priest but a blacksmith. He relented a bit over time and then died prematurely, removing all opposition. Peter was ordained a diocesan priest in 1834 and served in a parish. But he felt a slightly different call within his call and began to seek admission to the Society of Mary, or Marists. His diocesan bishop was reluctant to let Father Peter go. The bishop relented in 1839, writing to the Marist superior that “I have given sufficient proof of my high esteem for the Society of Mary in giving it such a priest.” Father Peter's personal energy, apostolic zeal, and prayerfulness led to his being named a Marist Provincial. He traveled throughout France and became acquainted with nocturnal and perpetual adoration societies. He became expert at preaching about the Eucharist and at directing lay Eucharistic societies. During a Corpus Christi procession in 1845, he had a mystical experience while carrying the Blessed Sacrament. His attraction to the Eucharist became so personal and so intense that he resolved “to preach nothing but Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ Eucharistic” from then on. Discussions with his superiors about orienting the Marist's more toward a Eucharistic identity were frustrated. It was not their primary charism. On January 21, 1851, at the Shrine of Our Lady of Fourviere overlooking Lyon, Father Eymard received the inspiration to found a new Order dedicated exclusively to the Blessed Sacrament. This third call within his one priestly call would consume the rest of his life.In 1857 the Society of the Blessed Sacrament was formally established in Paris. One year later, the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament for nuns would be founded. Father Peter and his few companions did not limit their Eucharistic dedication to piety and prayer. They prepared children to receive First Holy Communion, reached out to lapsed Catholics, and promoted frequent reception of Holy Communion for all Catholics. The normal struggles of every young Congregation bedeviled Father Eymard: extreme poverty, atrocious lodgings, lack of vocations, and problems of growth.Rodin's bust captures the essence of Father Eymard better than any photo. Eymard's mass of hair is out of control, communicating his passionate eccentricity. His gaze is penetrating. He knows the mysteries of God and other secrets of the soul. His thin face, straight nose, and protruding cheekbones say he is a mortified ascetic. And buried in his vest, just over his heart, is a scroll. Only a few words of it can be read. It is a fragment of Emyard's prayer: “O Sacrament Most Holy, O Sacrament Divine, all praise and all thanksgiving be every moment thine.” His love of the Eucharist pulsated in sync with his heart, every moment of every day of his fifty-seven years. Our saint is buried in his Congregation's chapel in Paris. He was canonized in 1962 and in 1995 his Optional Memorial was finally included in the Church's universal sanctoral calendar. Saint Peter Julian Eymard, your ardent love of the Blessed Sacrament consumed your thoughts, words, preaching, and life. May such a healthy devotion mark all of our lives. May we satisfy Christ's thirst for our presence by not making Him wait too long between our visits.

Erin O'Toole and his Conservatives are fighting a very smart battle in this election, outflanking the Liberals to the left on working class issues and stealing the NDP's thunder. The biggest loser in this battle is Liberals who increasingly become the party of the elite and out of touch. It's a smart strategy. Political battles are won and lost on the terrain of culture, and O'Toole is expertly appealing to the cultural and class divides in Canada, foraging a new working-class conservatism which appreciates the quickness to demand and end to flags at half staff in recognition of the residential ‘school' atrocities, while also speaking to the economic concerns of Canadian workers. ST. PETER JULIAN EYMARD | APOSTLE OF THE EUCHARIST Feast Day: AUGUST 2 Today, we bring to you the life story of St. Peter Julian Eymard, the saint whose driving passion in life was Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. He is the Founder of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. He was born in Le Mure, Isere, France on February 4, 1811. His family was a devout Catholic and immediately he learned about Jesus in the Eucharist. Even as a child he used to enter the church by himself and kneel before the Tabernacle. It is related that when he was five years old, he did not go home after playing. His sister looked for him and found him in the church, standing on a stool close to the Tabernacle. When asked what he was doing, his answer was “I am listening to Jesus.” As a young boy, he expressed his desire to become a priest, but his father opposed his vocation. He, however, entered a seminary, but he got seriously ill and went out. When he got well, he tried another and was successful. He was ordained on July 20, 1834 at the age of 23. He was assigned in a parish at the Diocese of Grenoble. Peter Julian's spirituality was influenced by Jansenism, a heresy which focusses on the sinfulness of man and on predestination that was why he lived a life of penance and reparation, avoiding sin at all cost. Already a diocesan priest, he joined the Society of Mary (Marists) and professed the three vows on August 20, 1839. He visited Marian shrines and made contacts with Eucharistic movements. He was drawn more to a contemplative life despite the many administrative duties given to him, and worked hard notwithstanding his fragile health. His favorite homilies were about the Eucharist and he had an intense attraction to the Eucharistic Jesus. When he was tasked to write a new rule for the Third Order of the Society of Mary, he suggested a Eucharistic rule, but that was not the charism of the Marists. A little later, still desirous to dedicate himself more to the exaltation of the Eucharist, he made a painful decision to leave the Marists and worked to establish an institute with a Eucharistic orientation. Fr. Eymard found support in Archbishop Marie Dominique Auguste, who understood his desire to emphasize not only the Holy Mass, Eucharistic adoration, but also to evangelize and serve those who were far from the Church. Young men joined him, the institute grew and the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament (SSS – Societa Sanctissimi Sacramenti) was approved on May 13, 1856. He also founded a congregation for women called Servants of the Blessed Sacrament, whose main work is Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Besides preaching he also wrote books about the Eucharist. Three years before his death in 1865, he made a retreat in Rome. He related that he discovered the great love of Jesus for him and in response he desired to make a gift of himself to Jesus. Being always fragile in health, he died of a complication from a stroke on August 1st, 1868 at age 57. He was beatified on July 12, 1925 and was canonized on December 9, 1962. His incorrupt body lies at the Blessed Sacrament Fathers' Chapel in Paris. “St. Peter Julian, you discovered in the Eucharist the great love of Jesus for you and the world. Help us to love Jesus in the Eucharist and receive Him worthily in Holy Communion.” Do I have time to visit Jesus in the Tabernacle or at least make a Spiritual Communion whenever I pass by a church? Do I receive Jesus often in Holy Communion?

He and Marguerite Guillot founded the women's Congregation of the Servants of the Blessed Sacrament. Saint of the Day Copyright Franciscan Media

Saint Peter Julian EymardFamily, if there was ever a Saint who had complete focus in what the Lord was calling him to do, it was St. Peter Julian Eymard. He is called, among other things, “Champion of the Blessed Sacrament”. He had such an unbelievable singleness of purpose, in his great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament, and desire that Eucharist Adoration should be practiced worldwide, that he would Found an Order devoted solely to adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and the spread of that devotion. That Religious Order is called “Priests of the Blessed Sacrament.”But we're getting ahead of ourselves here. The life of this slave of Mary and servant of Jesus is fascinating. We have to track his life here in the area of the world where he spent most of it, the French Alps. He began his life in 1811, in the small village of La Mure, in between Gap and Laus, and the great shrine of Our Lady of Laus, which played an important part in his life, and was just recently approved by Mother Church in May 2008, as the longest apparition Our Lady has made.Saint Peter Julian Eymard Media Journeys of Faith Bob and Penny Lord's StoreJourneys of Faith Blog Subscribe to our Free Blog Easy PeasyBob and Penny Lord TV Channel Miracles of the Eucharist, Apparitions of Mary, and lives of the Saints videos on demand.Support the show (https://bobandpennylord.store/pages/we-need-your-help)

O priest of the Blessed Sacrament, you gave your life in sacrifice at the altar of the Lord and in all the trials of this earth; you suffered all for Jesus and desired only to bring souls, all the children of God, to receive Him and His grace in the Sacrament of Communion, in oneness with our Lord – pray, O priest of Christ, that our very lives shall also be offered in sacrifice, especially in the holy sacrifice of the Mass and in reception of His Body and Blood in the Blessed Sacrament. Pray particularly that our priests will know the profound call upon their souls to make Him present in this world and be as inspired with holy devotion as were you, dear saint. Pray our hunger for His Presence increase.
