It's hard to overstate the depth of the connection between Dmitri Shostakovich and the legendary cellist Mstistlav Rostropovich. Shostakovich and Rostropovich were extremely close friends, and Shostakovich wrote and dedicated several works to him, including the piece we're going to talk about today, the first Cello Concerto. Rostropovich had been desperate to get Shostakovich to write a concerto for him, but Shostakovich's wife had one simple piece of advice: if you want Shostakovich to write something for you, don't talk to him about it or even mention it. So Rostropovich waited and waited, until July of 1959, when he was asked by Shostakovich to come to Leningrad to try out a new Cello Concerto. Shostakovich played through the piece for Rostropovich, turned to him, and asked him if he liked it. Rostropovich apparently told Shostakovich that he “had been shaken to the core.” Shostakovich, in his famously modest way, then shakily asked Rostropovich if he could dedicate the concerto to him. Rostropovich immediately agreed, and then rushed off to learn the concerto as quickly as possible. He learned the entire concerto in 3 days, then returned to Shostakovich and played it for him by heart. The concerto is practically stamped with Rostropovich's name, which is why I'll be using a recording of a live performance of Rostropovich during the show today, though I must say I also recommend a pretty great modern recording by a certain cellist who is also my sister, Alisa Weilerstein. This concerto has always been one of my favorites; it is compact, powerful, punchy, beautiful, intense, concentrated, and tremendously exciting. For me, it is one of Shostakovich's most Beethovenian works, in its lean power and its obsession with a single motive. Beacon concert will celebrate Broadway In a rarity for classical music ensembles, the Hudson Valley Symphony Orchestra will feature a saxophone soloist for its program of Broadway arrangements at Beacon High School on Feb. 22. The orchestra recruited Jerry Vivino, a member for 25 years of the house bands for Conan O'Brien's late-night shows, to sit in, although the headliner will be Hugh Panaro, who played the lead in Phantom of the Opera on Broadway more than 2,000 times. Panaro will indeed sing "Music of the Night," along with songs from Chess, Jersey Boys, Les Misérables and The Wizard of Oz. In addition, the orchestra will perform instrumental arrangements of selections from Evita, Wicked, Chicago, 42nd Street, On the Town and The Music Man. This is the Poughkeepsie-based ensemble's second recent concert in Beacon. It performed Messiah in December and returns in May to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of French composer Maurice Ravel with a program of his Ma Mere l'Oye Suite (Mother Goose), Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-flat Major, Op. 107, John Adams's Short Ride in a Fast Machine and Elgar's Enigma Variations. Founded in 1932, the orchestra began as an independent entity but partnered with the Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie in 1999 after tough times. Over the years, its programming dropped from 12 concerts and 130 school visits annually to three concerts, says Executive Director Rachel Crozier. Last year, it became a nonprofit and is again operating independently. The Pete and Toshi Seeger Theater at Beacon High School is one of the few venues in the Hudson Valley that can accommodate a full symphony orchestra, says Crozier, who plays second violin. In addition to the guest soloist and saxophonist, about 60 musicians will fill the stage, including two substitutes who live in Beacon, Eva Gerard (viola) and Adrienne Harmon (violin). Crozier praises the auditorium's acoustics: "The sound is warm, and it carries throughout the hall," she says. André Raphel, who last year became the symphony's principal conductor and artistic advisor, assembled the program. Raphel, who previously worked with the New York Philharmonic and the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra in West Virginia, seeks to recreate the versatile sound heard on original cast albums from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. "Hearing Broadway material performed by an orchestra is going to be sonically superior to attending the show itself because, no matter how good the pit musicians are, you're getting a lush performance with so many more instruments," he says. One challenge for the future of classical music is its aging audience. "The way we talk about it needs to shift," says Crozier. "Classical is for everyone, and we want people to be comfortable." Mixing things up, like offering a holiday choral work, providing accompaniment for a silent film and rolling out a pops or Broadway program, help orchestras engage with larger audiences, says Raphel. "Movies would be much less engaging or emotional without the background music, which is usually recorded by a full orchestra," says Crozier. "Just as music makes movies better, people can enhance their days by making classical music part of the soundtrack to their lives." Beacon High School is located at 101 Matteawan Road. In 1773, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach sat down to record his life story. He'd been asked to write it down for a new book on German music and it made him one of the first composers to produce an autobiography. This week, Donald Macleod follows the composer's story, using Bach's own account as his guide. I imagine that unless you are a professional cellist, or someone who studied cello as a child, you probably haven't. Even though my sister is a professional cellist, I had never heard of him before I was asked to make this show. Duport is a historical figure who has been almost completely forgotten, though he was part of a fascinating group of musicians who encountered Beethoven, Frederick the Great, and even Napoleon! He and his brother Jean-Pierre were two of the greatest cellists of their era, and Jean-Louis lives on for cellists as the writer of a set of etudes or studies that are still used by cellists all over the world to refine their techniques. But Jean-Louis Duport also wrote 6 cello concertos, pieces which show his profound connection with the instrument, as well as his mastery of the style of his time. Today on the show I'll take you through one of those concertos, his 4th, but I'm also going to do something a bit different. Since this will be my first time encountering the music of Duport, I want to show you how I might approach this piece as a conductor learning it for the first time. I've been conducting professionally now for almost 15 years, so there aren't a lot of pieces that are brand new to me anymore, but if I were to conduct this concerto, it would be totally new to me, which means that I approach this music in a totally different way than a piece I'd conducted a few times before. Synopsis In 2002, film director Godfrey Reggio released his latest movie.  Entitled Naqoyqatsi – the Hopi word for Life as War – this was Reggio's third and final installment in a trilogy of unusual, non-narrative films, all with Hopi titles, each comprised of visually striking, collage-like visuals set against hypnotic film scores by American composer Philip Glass. Naqoyqatsi may have been a non-narrative film, Reggio described his 2002 film as a symphony in three movements, and even provided descriptive titles: Movement 1 - Language and place gives way to numerical code and virtual reality; Movement 2 - Life becomes a game; Movement 3 - A world that language can no longer describe.Fast forward ten years to 2012, when Glass had been commissioned to turn hisNaqoyqatsi film score into a concert work for cello and orchestra.  In the film score, solos played by the famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma featured prominently, so this “repurposing” of film score seemed a logical step. And so, on today's date in 2012, Philip Glass's Cello Concerto No. 2, subtitled Naqoyqatsi, received its premiere performance with the Cincinnati Symphony conducted by Dennis Russell Davies and Matt Haimowitz as the cello soloist. Synopsis In 1939, Dale Carnegie published a self-help book entitled How to Win Friends and Influence People, suggesting you could change people's behavior to you by changing YOUR behavior toward them. We're not sure if Carnegie's book was ever translated into Russian, but we'd like to cite the case of the famous Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich as an example of one way to influence a particular composer. In Rostropovich's day, the greatest living Soviet composers were Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich. In 1949 Prokofiev wrote a Cello Sonata for the 22-year old Rostropovich, and also dedicated his 1952 Sinfonia Concertante for cello and orchestra to him. Not surprisingly, Rostropovich hoped Shostakovich might write something for him, too, and so asked that composer's wife, Nina, how to ask him. She replied the best way was NEVER to mention the idea in the presence of her husband. She knew Shostakovich was following the cellist's career with interest, and if the idea of writing something for Rostropovich was his own, rather than somebody else's, it stood a better chance of becoming reality. Rostropovich followed her advice, and – surprise surprise – on today's date in 1959, gave the premiere performance with the Leningrad Philharmonic of a brand-new cello concerto specially-written for him by Dmitri Shostakovich. Synopsis April 29th fell on Sunday in the year 1906, and readers of The New York Times photogravure supplement were able to view scenes of the terrible destruction in San Francisco that followed the great earthquake that struck that city just 11 days before. The paper was filled with accounts of the suffering caused by the quake, and undoubtedly, many New Yorkers asked themselves what they could do to help. The New York musical community provided one answer by quickly arranging a number of benefit concerts. The largest of these occurred on today's date that year at New York's Hippodrome, and was organized by the popular composer Victor Herbert, who conducted his orchestra with Metropolitan Opera singer Ernestine Schumann-Heink as a featured soloist. The vast Hippodrome was completely sold out, with standing-room-only tickets filling the aisles. Seven thousand dollars were raised, which by today's standards seems a rather modest sum, but by 1906 standards was impressive enough to make newspaper headlines. Perhaps New York musicians and their audiences felt a personal affinity with the quake victims, as their own Metropolitan Opera Company, including its star tenor Enrico Caruso, was on tour in San Francisco when the quake struck on April 18th, and, as the Times reported, the Met's touring orchestral musicians, almost without exception, lost their instruments. That bit of news must have struck a special chord with Victor Herbert. In 1886, both he and his wife had come to America from Europe to join the Metropolitan Opera – he as an orchestral cellist, and she as a soprano soloist. Donald Macleod explores Henriëtte Bosmans' rise to fame as both a pianist and a composer. Henriëtte Bosmans seemed destined for a life in music from the moment of her birth, in 1895. Her father was the principal solo cellist in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra and her mother a piano teacher at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Bosmans developed a flourishing career and won international success with her Concert Piece for Violin and Orchestra. As a concert pianist she performed alongside conductors such as Ernest Ansermet and George Szell. Bosmans's mother was a Jew and, although Bosmans didn't consider herself Jewish, her ancestry played a significant role in the events of her life. She lived through the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, when tens of thousands of Amsterdam Jews were deported to concentration camps, including her fellow citizen, Anne Frank. This week, Donald Macleod is joined by Bosmans expert Dr Helen Metzelaar and also Dr Laurien Vastenhout from Amsterdam's Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide. Guest conductor Paolo Bortolameolli will lead the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra (CSO) in Kabalevsky's Cello Concerto No. 1 , featuring cellist Christine Lamprea plus works by Corigliano and Gabriela Ortiz. Bortolameolli is a strong advocate for bringing new compositions and new audiences to classical music. He describes some of his novel approaches to this challenge. Donald Macleod delves into the character and music of Camille Saint-Saëns This week’s episode begins with a look at Saint-Saëns the innovator, who introduced new-fangled ideas to an opera-loving Parisian public. Donald investigates the driving force behind the composer’s unstoppable ambition and his dogged determination to find an audience for his music. Next, the playful side of Saint-Saëns’ character - one which he kept under wraps in public, yet amongst friends and in private correspondence he sparkled with wit, and it reveals itself in some of his most popular and enduring music. We hear about the many obstacles Saint-Saëns encountered in his attempts to be recognised as a serious operatic composer, and finally, the composer’s critical views on emerging musical trends in the final decades of his life, when he was condemned as a reactionary for his outmoded attitudes. 1967, Fort Riley, Kansas. Henry Threadgill is 23 years old. Knowing he’s going to be drafted into the military, he joins the Army Concert Band, hoping to focus on his passion: writing music. As he surrounds himself with new ideas, he works his influences into the music that he's arranging. Then one day, the band plays one of his arrangements of a patriotic song for an inauguration of big-wigs, and from the calm of a quietly confused crowd comes a cry from a cardinal in attendance: “Blasphemy!” One day later, he’s told to gather his things. Thirty days later, he’s on his way to Vietnam. Fifty years later, he wins the Pulitzer Prize for music composition. This is only the beginning of the story of how the energy, hunger and curiosity of Henry Threadgill have influenced and changed the people around him. In spite of the failure and rejection he’s faced, Threadgill is perpetually driven toward new ideas, new challenges and new opportunities to pursue and grow stronger in his improvisational creative vision.
