Leaf By Niggle, 2023! Dr. Chris Hackett (https://HackettWrites.com) joins us for what has become an annual tradition on The Tolkien Road. While we've covered Leaf By Niggle several times in the past, and frequently refer to it, it's an incredible gem, hidden behind the mountainous wonder that is the Middle-earth legendarium. For me, it's a story that never ceases to fill me with wonder and joy, and if I'm being honest, it always manages to get me a little choked up. I suppose this effect has something to do with what Tolkien called “Christian joy”, that “which produces tears because it is qualitatively so like sorrow, because it comes from those places where Joy and Sorrow are at one, reconciled, as selfishness and altruism are lost in Love.” I wish people knew about this story like they knew about The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I believe it is truly a life-changing story, bearing the aura of supernatural inspiration, like so much of Middle-earth. And it's a joy to discuss this story with others, and to learn what they see in it.Learn more about Dr. Chris Hackett and his books » https://hackettwrites.com/ WATCH » https://youtu.be/UG2FJWNEp1o EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS:- Kaitlyn of Tea with Tolkien- John R- Jacob Lockham- John H- Eru27SPECIAL THANKS:- John R- Kaitlyn of Tea with Tolkien- Jacob Lockham- John H- Eru27- Emilio P- Jonathan D- Mike M- Robert H- Paul D- Julia- Werty- JoeBagelMan- Jacob S- Richard K- Matt R- Matthew W- Garret P- Chris K- John W- Eugene D- Chris B- Daniel S- Seb M- Shana Supreme- Ms. Anonymous- Andrew T- Redhawk- Shannon S- Brian O- Zeke F- James L- Chris L- Chuck F- Asya V- Ish of the Hammer- Teresa C- David of Pints with Jack- Eric B- Johanna TAS WELL AS THOSE CELEBRATING THEIR PATRON ANNIVERSARY IN FEBRUARY OF 2023- Ish of the Hammer- Jacob Lockham- Robert H- Asya V- Eric B- Jon R- Andrew M- ShaneWise- Lucas W- Sean S- Sarah W- Jon R- David Bigwood- Cat L- Sarah M- Eric B

How to Deal With Over-Commitment

Serial Stress Killer

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2019 15:47

In this episode of The Serial Stress Killer Chris explains how over commitment can have a negative impact on your life. He also covers how you can find the commitments that may be unnecessarily taking up your time.     KEY TAKEAWAYS  Commitment is an engagement or obligation that restricts freedom of action. Our time, your time and freedom is valuable.  We usually commit to things because we feel obligated, feel guilt or want something.  The chase of the feel good feeling dressed up altruism is one of the hardest and most dangerous commitments, much like a drug addiction that hides under the illusion of purity. It’s very hard to identify from the outside, only you will know deep down.  How do you know if you’ve over committed yourself? Ask yourself these three things:  How much time do you have each day, week, month etc…?   Do you regret any of the commitments that you’ve convinced yourself that they’re worth maintaining to keep your ego or sense of pride in place?  Do you feel powerless to plan your life? Do you plan your life around your commitments?   If you’re committing yourself and becoming more and more stress, then your body’s trying to tell you something. Listen to your body.  Take some time away from these commitments to have time to reflect and relax. It will make the world of difference.  If you can’t get out of any of your commitments try these things:   List all of your commitments down on paper and highlight all of your life and death commitments.   Highlight all of the commitments that bring some kind of joy.  Highlight all of the commitments where you’re working towards a final goal.  Look back at your list and if there are any that aren’t highlighted then they’re probably expendable so put a cross on them and cancel those commitments.     BEST MOMENTS  ‘The world relies on various forms of commitment.’  ‘It’s very easy to overcommit.’  ‘Recognition is the right direction to step in.’  ‘You are probably the biggest obstacle you’re going to have to overcome.’    VALUABLE RESOURCES  https://rebrand.ly/sskplaylist01  Serial Stress Killer Podcast     ABOUT THE HOST  After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on.     CONTACT METHOD  Contact the show  https://serialstresskiller.com  https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialstresskiller  https://www.instagram.com/serialstresskiller  Support the show - https://www.patreon.com/serialstresskiller  What’s been your favourite episode so far? Shoud You Tell Your Employees

Serial Stress Killer

‘Should you let your employees know when you’re stressed?’   Although this is a question that is commonly asked, it’s not as straight forward as yes or no. Communication is a huge factor in business and the way you communicate to your employees that you may be stressed matters a lot. Learn how you can communicate your stress across to your employees in a positive way by listening to this episode of The Serial Stress Killer…   KEY TAKEAWAYS This topic is for anyone, from business owners to employees. It’s a common conundrum that I’ve come across from a variety of people. Whether you’re stressed in your personal or business life you’re more than likely going to be affected negatively for the rest of your day. Employees normally feel more comfortable opening up to their managers about their personal lives. Being the business owner, employees tend to look up to you and think you can just overcome anything that gets in your way. Really this isn’t the case and it can sometimes feel lonely. Stress can be contagious so showing that your stress could have a knock on effect. Being stressed all of the time and not telling people about them will eventually cause a toxic environment. If you are open about your stress or if you communicate with your employees, it can give them peace of mind and they can understand why. You don’t have to be specific when informing your employees, but communicating across your stress and why you may be acting in certain ways can really help them gain ease of mind knowing that they’re not part of the reason for your stress. Being open and communicating well can be a great example of how to communicate well and not allowing them to ask themselves the self doubt questions.     BEST MOMENTS “Stress in the workplace is a real killer.” “Stress kills productivity” ‘Sometimes it’s good to distance yourself a bit from your employees.’ ‘People can spot stress a mile off’ ‘Bing open with your employees can make them feel better’   VALUABLE RESOURCES https://rebrand.ly/sskplaylist01 Serial Stress Killer Podcast   ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on.   CONTACT METHOD Contact the show https://serialstresskiller.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialstresskiller https://www.instagram.com/serialstresskiller Support the show - https://www.patreon.com/serialstresskiller What’s been your favourite episode so far? Welcome to the Serial Stress Killer Podcast. In this episode, your host Chris Hackett asks you (the listener) “What is your ‘Happy Place’ ? ” because he believes it is crucial to know what& where your ‘happy place’ is!  KEY TAKEAWAYS You may also have more than one ‘Happy Place’ and Chris discusses his ‘happy places’, the importance of where, what and why!  Your ‘Happy Place’ could be anywhere or anything you want! It could be A library Favourite café or bar Local park Gym or golf course! Theatre or cinema Woodlands or forest  It could even be that your ‘Happy Place’ isn’t physically real, but a mental place you can go to when you need to.  When you’re dealing with stress it is important to have at least one ‘Happy Place’ to go to. It gives you a constant, a mandate to leave the house for a bit and escape yourself. Realistically, to work you need to have one of your ‘Happy Places’ to be convenient enough to travel to so you don’t talk yourself out of going.  Hopefully, you have more than one ‘Happy Place’ that comes to mind; Places and activities that you love and you cherish. If you don’t have ‘Happy Places’, dealing with your stress will probably be much harder.  Chris implores you to explore and find new places and activities to expand your ‘Happy Places’ and develop new connections, memories and opportunities.  Chris also strongly suggests you keep a list of these places and activities; to remind you of them and to keep them readily available should you need them when you need to go! ‘Disrupt those annoying little voices in your head and prevent them from taking over your life’ In this episode of The Serial Stress Killer Chris explains and discussed 20 easy top tips to tackle those annoying negative voices in your head. The longer you let the voices in your head fester, the more stressed you’re going to put yourself under.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Recognise when you’re over thinking about the same thing over and over again and use pattern interrupt to stop this by having a convocation with yourself. Ask yourself whether stressing about this thing is beneficial, what is it you’re thinking about this for and what is the value of stressing about this. Play some music. This could be listening or physically playing. This can help because it’s hard to stress about things when you’re concentrating on something else. Watch some TV or go to the cinema to take your mind off of things for a while. Binge watch and immerse yourself in watching something you enjoy. This could be a box set or film, whatever you enjoy the most. Go to a gym class of your choice. This could be high intensity or Yoga. It’s difficult to think about things that may have happened in the past when someone’s telling you to do something physical now. Read a book, much like watching TV will take your mind away from these thoughts. This could be more effective if you read out loud, whatever suits you the best. Call somebody to talk to either to express yourself and get something off of your chest or to ask what’s happening in their life. This can make someone else feel good as well as helping yourself feel better. Start writing, this can be in any form. Poems, journal or creative. This can be a great way to get thoughts out of your head. Create some art regardless of your skill level. Again, the form is up to your own preference. Memorise something that you like such as a poem, song or piece of music. Dancing is a great way to decrease stress, you could combine this with listening to music and kill 2 birds with 1 stone! This could be in a class or just on your own, either works just as well. Solve a problem or puzzle. This could be a small life problem or leisure problem such as a crossword. Solving a life problem can be more positive and pro active however ensure it’s not something that you’re stressing about. Go for a drive can be really cathartic. Concentrating on the road can help drive your mind away from whatever it is stressing you. Cook something. If you’re really annoyed, then you could focus on spending a few hours on making a really nice meal. This could be just for yourself or made into a social occasion. Cuddle someone or something. Play a video game. This can be a really great way to take your mind away from things. Cleaning the house may or may not be the most exciting thing to do but you’ll end up with a sparkling house. Watch some comedy, live or on a device because laughter is the best medicine. It can make you feel like a different person. BEST MOMENTS “When you’re stressed and experiencing anxiety, your defences are weakened.” “You can easily fall into all or nothing thinking.” “Your body doesn’t know the difference between a real stressful experience and a made up one.” ‘Exercise can help by releasing those feel-good hormones.’ “It can be really therapeutic to go through a creative process.” “Those annoying negative voices in your head are what’s going to drive your stress.” “Don’t be a victim, be a boss.”   VALUABLE RESOURCES https://rebrand.ly/sskplaylist01 Serial Stress Killer Podcast   ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on.   CONTACT METHOD Contact the show https://serialstresskiller.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialstresskiller https://www.instagram.com/serialstresskiller Support the show - https://www.patreon.com/serialstresskiller What’s been your favourite episode so far? ‘Learn to relax and engage your brain in an analogue way’   In this episode of The Serial Stress Killer Podcast Chris discusses the importance on not relying on technology and devices to control your life. He also discusses the affect of sleep tracking apps on your devices and how they can actually have the opposite affect on your sleep than what they’re made for.     KEY TAKEAWAYS  I came across a recent article which indicated that sleeping apps on mobile phones may be making us focus on the wrong things. Thus, increasing the amount of time we’re spending stressing, obsessing and focusing on things such as our sleep quota.  Some research shows that these sleep tracking apps have actually made being able to sleep worse and I’ve got to agree. Some say there’s no need to track your sleep.  It’s not just sleeping apps that can try help us with our life. There’s apps for everything these days.  I think we need to be careful when constantly looking for shortcuts with living life because there’s only so many dopamine hits we can get from using technology.  If you’re using lots of apps to control your lifestyle, then try go analogue for a while. It may not give you the instant reward however over time it may help you stop obsessing over how you’re living your life.    BEST MOMENTS  “Some research shows that these sleeping apps can cause insomnia or extreme sleep deprivation.’  ‘Obsessing over a topic is rarely beneficial.’  ‘I know I get my best ideas when I down tools and stop being productive for a couple of hours.’   ‘It’s gotten to the point where we’ve forgotten how to think without a digital prompt.’  ‘You don’t need an app to relax, sleep or meditate.’     VALUABLE RESOURCES  https://rebrand.ly/sskplaylist01  Serial Stress Killer Podcast     ABOUT THE HOST  After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. Who likes chocolate? Did you know that a recent study by the MS Society showed that by simply consuming hot chocolate that’s high in flavinoids, we can help our bodies to work a lot more efficiently, and reduce stress at the same time.  Maybe it’s time to change your morning habits? Listen in as Christopher explains the science behind it... KEY TAKEAWAYS MS is one of the most common causes of serious disability in younger adults. Around 127,000 adults in the UK suffer from it.  Flavinoids are substances that can slow or halt the damage to cells by free radicals, which are essentially waste material caused by processing food. If your body can’t process these free radicals efficiently it can lead to all kinds of problems, including heart disease, cancer, strokes and respiratory diseases and many more. Milk chocolate has lots of fat and lots of sugar, which means lots of weight gain. They are also LOW in flavinoids. Dark chocolate, however, is rich in flavinoids. Look for 70% cocoa and above. BEST MOMENTS ‘Oh, two more of you at the back!’ ‘Oxidative stress is not great!’ ‘100% dark chocolate is an intense chocolate experience!’ ‘I’m going to replace my morning coffee with a steaming mug of flavinoid rich chocolate!’ ‘You can be a chocolate flavour, flavinoid-fuelled killer’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/serial-stress-killer/id1438515546?mt=2    ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on.    CONTACT METHOD Contact the show https://serialstresskiller.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialstresskiller https://www.instagram.com/serialstresskiller Support the show - https://www.patreon.com/serialstresskiller What’s been your favourite episode so far? ‘There are many myths and half-truths around stress that many of us buy into, these can hold us back in our personal development and progress’ Welcome back to The Serial Stress Killer Podcast! Your host, Chris Hackett, continues exploring the myths we are all familiar with surrounding stress! If you missed last weeks episode, go back and listen to the first 6 Myths about stress. Listen in as Chris shares more evidence connected to each myth and explains the ways you can positively manage stress across a range of situations KEY TAKEAWAYS  ‘Stress is the same for everyone’  Stress responses can be emotional, physical or a combination of the two therefore no two individuals will experience stress in the exact same way and will require different needs in order to deal with stress.   “Stress comes from what’s happening in your life”  How you perceive a problem or situation will depend on how you respond to it. We can choose how we react to a situation. The trick is to differentiate between life and death worries from the small and every day niggles.  “A drink is an effective way to deal with stress”  You may think twice about this is you’re wanting to deal with stress. Alcohol is said to increase the amount of stress hormones that we produce rather than having the opposite effect that we want.  “It’s obvious when someone is stressed out”  There are so many symptoms of stress, some people are very good at hiding it. We can be really good at being stressed but not give out the right signals or reactions for others to recognise it.  “The more successful you are, the more stressed you are”  Stress doesn’t make someone successful, it actually reduces our productivity, creativity and can cause mental exhaustion. If you look at the most successful people in the world, they seem to me as if they’re not very stressed.   By eating right, getting enough sleep and taking care of our bodies we can eliminate our stress.”  It’s often echoed that if we keep physically fit we can deal with any obstacles that life throws at us. However, the fundamental causes of the stress we face can be overlooked. Although doing this cant completely eliminate stress, it can certainly help to deal with it.    BEST MOMENTS  “Everyone will have different ways of dealing with stress. Do what works for you. Period.”  “It will only be stressful if you consider it to be stressful.”  “If you’re working crazy hours or are exhausted all of the time, those factors are not going to help you feel cool, calm and collected.”  “A big drink is perhaps not the best way to deal with stress”  “If you are stressed or feeling stressed then tell someone.”  “You’re more likely to be better equip if we look after ourselves.”     VALUABLE RESOURCES  Serial Stress Killer Podcast  ABOUT THE HOST  After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. ‘There are many myths and half-truths around stress that many of us buy into, these can hold us back in our personal development and progress’  In the first part of this 2-part series, Chris explores the myths we are all familiar with surrounding stress.  He shares the evidence connected to each myth and explains the ways you can positively manage stress across a range of situations, listen in now to hear more.     KEY TAKEAWAYS  Stress is completely avoidable – It’s impossible to avoid stress, the goal should be to recognise it, embrace it and manage it in the most effective way. If you don’t learn how to deal with stress effectively when any stressful event occurs you will find it challenging and difficult to deal with.  Stress is always a bad thing – at the right level and in certain circumstances stress can be helpful as it can motivate people to take action or change. You can feel stress after positive events too, the key is to manage it successfully.  Stress equals unhappiness – The biggest myth about stress is that it is negative and will always make you unhappy if you successfully manage the things that are stressful then the negative tension and anxiety elements of stress can be removed.  Stress is uncontrollable – Stress can hit at any point in life. There are events in life that are outside of individual control along with those that are controllable. Perspective is everything it is what allows us to see things more clearly so that we are able to recognise the small annoyances for what they are within the bigger picture.  Stress is the best motivator – It is a positive of stress that it helps us to get things done but it's important to define the differences between stress and stimulation. If you are working on a project you love then the stress of deadlines  can be motivating because of the excitement.  Stress is always bad for the body – It is recognised that when stress isn’t managed well it can affect the body adversely so learning to manage stress effectively is key to your physical health.     BEST MOMENTS  ‘You need to learn how to tackle these problems’  ‘You can feel stress after positive events too,  the key is to manage it successfully’  ‘Recognising and deciding not to stress is a powerful skill to be mastered’  ‘If there is stress there is a root problem that will need to be dealt with’  ‘It’s an opportunity to develop and grow if you can recognise it for what it is’     VALUABLE RESOURCES  Serial Stress Killer Podcast     ABOUT THE HOST  After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. Today on the Serial Stress Killer Podcast, we talk about the ‘leader of the free world’, Donald Trump, and what we could learn from his past experience about stress. In the 90s, now-president Donald Trump had an interview with the interviewer, comedian, actress, and author Ruby Wax inside his own private jet. It was very notable since, at the middle of the interview, Donald Trump had to order the pilot to emergency land just to throw Ruby off the jet. Now, you ask, “what’s a valuable reason that could get you thrown off a jet?” Well, after Donald Trump told her of his ambition to be the next President of the United States of America, he was responded with a burst of laughter. He wouldn’t have it. So, did Trump overreacted or was he just protecting himself from such negativity and stress? Let me know what you think right after you listen in! KEY TAKEAWAYS It’s good to be ambitious but make sure that you’ll be bulletproof against adverse reactions. Some might say you’re doing a great thing; some might say you’re going way over the top. It’s up to you how you manage these reactions so they can actually help you achieve your ambition. The #1 battle that you should always win is with your self-doubt. Learn how to defeat it and show that you are the boss. The only voice you should listen to is your own. It’s time to stray away from people who got nothing to do but bring everyone else down. It will cost you the time to question yourself and stress yourself. Instead, use the time and energy to the essential tasks. Surround yourself with like-minded people that can help you actually better yourself. BEST MOMENTS “You are the sum of the company that you keep.” “When you share your goals with somebody – you tell her about your dreams, your objectives, and the stuff that you wanna do so you could improve your own life – and they try to extinguish your fire with withering laughter, I want you to consider doing a Donald Trump… I want you to think in your head, ‘Land the plane. How Plants Can Help You Reduce Stress

How are you feeling? We often look at ways we can actively control and manage or cure our stress through mindfulness, healthy eating and meditation but how can our environment and plants make a positive difference? There are some really quick ways of reducing stress by adding more natural elements to your home and in this episode, Chris explains how plants positively affect us. Listen in to find out about how they do it and the best plants to choose for your own environment.   KEY TAKEAWAYS A study published in the Journal of Psychological Anthropology stated ‘active interaction with indoor plants such as touching and smelling can reduce psychological and physiological stress’ Even the soil can positively impact on stress and anxiety as it contains microbes that act as a natural antidepressant Soil can boost your mood by releasing cytokines (small secreted proteins released by cells) which lead your brain to produce more serotonin, ‘the happy chemical’. As Humans we are hard-wired to respond positively to our natural environments. A 2010 study from Sydney showed a reduction in stress, anxiety and fatigue when plants were added to the environment. Not only can plants make you feel better at home they can transform your work environment too. Airborne toxins and particles are absorbed by plant leaves. The toxins are then translocated into the plant root and used as plant food or destroyed through a metabolic breakdown. Plants in your home are one of the quickest ways to reduce your stress levels and improve your environment.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Indoor air can be more polluted than outdoor air’ ‘Having plants means the bad stuff in the air is absorbed by them which is more positive for you’ ‘If you don’t have any plants in your home it’s time to get shopping’ ‘This is also why being outside is so beneficial’ ‘Plants also remind us of a more natural way of being’   VALUABLE RESOURCES Serial Stress Killer Podcast   ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on.   CONTACT METHOD Contact the show https://serialstresskiller.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialstresskiller https://www.instagram.com/serialstresskiller Support the show - https://www.patreon.com/serialstresskiller What’s been your favourite episode so far? If meditation, therapy sessions, your favourite tv show does not help you to relieve stress, then consider video games. In this episode of the Serial Stress Killer Podcast, Chris discusses video games and stress. It has long been a debate if video games are really beneficial or harmful to our emotional and psychological state. Chris’ answer is it depends on you. There is an addictive nature (just like in any other stuff) that video games offer, so it’s up to you to be disciplined enough how much time you allot. If it helps you combat stress from time to time, then why not use it? Listen in as Chris also shares some studies and resources about its positive effects. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you haven’t found any coping mechanisms yet to combat stress, then definitely include playing video games as one of your choices. It’s easily accessible and cost-effective since most video games are available on mobile phones. According to a study, playing video games even for a brief time can offer cognitive restoration. 66 participants did tasks which induced cognitive fatigue. After this, they were separated into 3 groups and were allowed to have a 5-minute break. Leading group plays a mobile game called Sushi cat, the second group undergoes a relaxation session, and the last group just sit quietly in the room without any gadgets. If you experienced a stressful event, then your brain is going to focus on that event. Try to do something else to engage your rational mind and to detach your emotions. After de-stressing – can be through playing video games – you can go back to assessing that event rationally. Video games can be addictive so make sure that you only allow yourself to be exposed to it for just the right amount of time. They are just designed to give you an immediate quick fix. BEST MOMENTS “If you’re stressed, spending time by yourself in a quiet room may not be your best course of action.” "Michael Rupp notes, ‘We often try to power through the day to get more work finished, which might not be as effective as taking some time to detach for a few minutes. People should plan short breaks to make time for an engaging and enjoyable activity, such as video games, that can help them recharge.’" VALUABLE RESOURCES Searching for Affective and Cognitive Restoration: Examining the Restorative Effects of Casual Video Game Play | A Study by Michael A. Chris takes a look at some of the more unfamiliar methods of dealing with stress in our lives, in a special rundown of twenty-nine practises that other people swear by. These include techniques that at first may sound somewhat unorthodox, but as Chris explains, they are all rooted in science and research, so perhaps your great undiscovered stress-killing method lies within?   KEY TAKEAWAYS Sometimes the things we consume can affect our mood - According to Web MD, high levels of Vitamin C can reduce our stress levels. An Australian researcher found that chewing gum reduces a significant stress hormone. Eating something crunchy can relieve physical tension.   A physical prompt can also help - The rubber band method is widely known and involves training one’s self to feel less stressed by utilising “operant conditioning”. Chris explains how this works and how it can lead to reduced stress levels. Inflating a balloon, which can force you to deep breathe. Standing on one leg can help you to feel more focussed. Even rubbing one’s palm can help to alleviate tension.   Drink water upside down - A familiar method for curing hiccups may also help to reduce stress levels!.   Putting a golf ball using the opposite side of the club - This increases the need to focus, and can take our minds off factors that may be causing stress. This also works for any practice that requires us to perform it in the opposite way.   Make a snowman - The best part is that you don’t need snow... Chris recommends a method for everyone’s secret favourite activity that involves nothing more than a few household items... Chris even finds advice that suggests the Japanese art of “adult wrapping” might help. The simple act of rearranging our desks or working environments can lead to a helpful, temporary shift in perspective. Fractals and abstract shapes are an easy way to reduce stress. Research shows that looking at waves or snowflakes or swirls in paintings can have a calming influence on the brain.     BEST MOMENTS ‘Deep breathing is a good stress management tool’ ‘You also get to blow up a balloon, which is slightly comical and may make you smile a bit!’ ‘If you laugh really hard at a joke that’s only mildly funny, it can spur some of that much-needed stress relief’ ‘Tip the endorphin scales in our favour’ ‘If you try to do anything from the opposite side, then you have to focus hard’ ‘If you are going to walk around the office backwards, do make sure it’s not during a very important meeting...’ ‘When you’re holding stress in, you have to let it out somehow’   VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/serial-stress-killer/id1438515546?mt=2   ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on.     CONTACT METHOD Contact the show https://serialstresskiller.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialstresskiller https://www.instagram.com/serialstresskiller Support the show - https://www.patreon.com/serialstresskiller What’s been your favourite episode so far? Life is a precious thing. Life is for living if you choose. What is it you want to do with your life? how do you want to live? What kind of people do you want to surround yourself with? How can you touch the lives of others? So that one day when your time is up people will celebrate your life with joy. 2 Simple Techniques

Serial Stress Killer – Episode 29 It’s been an interesting couple of weeks for your Host, Chris Hackett. This is both Personally& Professionally; A struggle and battle which lead him to these two critical techniques which he shares with you on this episode. 2 techniques that had a considerably profound impact on his stress levels in a positive way. KEY TAKEAWAYS  Recognise & Accept The Situation. What you know What you do Who you talk to These don’t always translate into success. Accepting the situation and remembering the feelings and overwhelm will pass. It is okay to take a break, just remember it is just a feeling and the reality is that you are in no actual immediate danger.   Reduced Your Stress Considerations   Sometimes, stressful things come one after the other, or all at once even! The trick is to strategize and systemize; which are priority? What needs dealing with today and what can be delayed? You could take the challenge and tackle everything head- on, all at once. You may even feel that this is your only course of action; that every stressful item on your list is priority 1 and cannot possibly be delayed! However, this could be down to stress hormones and realistically, the reality is that you CAN put things aside to help yourself deal with each one individually.   Important: Routine It is imperative you keep your routine. As easy as it is to give in and let stress disrupt your systems and routines. One of the most challenging hurdles to overcome, when you are going through stress, is maintaining the routines that serve you well. So even though you have no interest in going to the gym, force yourself to go, even if it’s just a short workout. Although you have travelled slightly off the path, you are still headed in the same direction; Your routine isn’t massively disrupted as you have maintained it, and not given in to the stress. You have still achieved your goal, all be it a smaller version of. You can reap the sense of achievement however small, rather than the alternative of wallowing in the disappointment of giving in had you not gone at all! So if you have routines in your life that serve you well, physically OR mentally, you may have to push a little bit harder to accomplish less. But these are the little victories in life we all need from time to time. To remind us that we are still alive and we are still in control.   If you have a lot of really stressful things going on in your life that are not connected but causing your brain and body to go into anxiety overdrive, try just recognising the situation for what it is and reduce your stress considerations. You can always come back and deal with things in the near future. There is no shame in that and once you deal with the immediate problem, you’ll have more headspace to deal with the other stuff.    BEST MOMENTS  ‘Sometimes you just can’t control every situation‘ ‘It is just a feeling and the reality is that you are in no actual immediate danger. ‘ ‘And they all FELT like life and death (primarily because my body was pumping so much stress hormone into my system)’ ‘The reality was some things could be left to one side ‘ ‘One of the most dangerous things when you are going through stress is stopping the routines that serve you well’ ‘Remember, stress is the enemy and you the killer‘   VALUABLE RESOURCES     https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/serial-stress-killer/id1438515546?mt=2       ABOUT THE HOST  After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. ‘Whatever  the state of the economy the job market is always fluid, and change is pretty much inevitable. How will you deal with it, if it happens to you?’    In this podcast, Chris deals with the practical issues and how to cope with the stress that is inevitable when you lose your job.    He provides clear and practical guidance on what to do to move forward and find not only a new job but the one you really want.       KEY TAKEAWAYS  Losing a job can be incredibly stressful  There will be a rollercoaster of emotions you will likely feel emotions of anger, resentment and fear.    However, you are taking the news every one of the emotions experienced is normal. You must also recognise they are emotions and reactions to a significant life event.    You must try and take control of them through acceptance of what they are. You will  go through a period of grief and you should initially allow yourself a limited period to come to terms with what has happened followed by a move to being proactive and looking towards plans for the future.    Whatever you do don’t become a hermit. If you cancel all of the social activities you had been taking part in previously you will be putting your mental health at risk.    If you have routines in your life try to stick with them as they will give your life a sense of normality.    Don’t wait, be proactive, you are the one in control of  your destiny  Review and restructure your finances making sure you have no unnecessary costs and outgoings    It's important that you know what your legal rights are. If you have been made an offer make sure it's legal and fair.    Don’t disregard any job, you need to be pragmatic a job may be a short-term answer paying the bills even if you continue to search for the job you really want.    If you have a good redundancy package you may have more time to find the job you really want but be proactive and sort out your CV and make sure you know what the job market is doing.    Start looking for work immediately  If you are not doing the job you really want, what do you want to do?  Losing your job could be a great opportunity  to retrain and do something different.    Many people have completely reinvented themselves as a result of losing a job they probably never really enjoyed anyway.    You may want to consider freelance work there are now extensive opportunities via the internet.    There are many companies around the world who are looking for people to complete freelance projects.    Networking  If you do find yourself facing unemployment then it’s time to speak to your friends and family and ask for help. People will want to try and help you, but you will need to be specific about what you are looking for.    If you ask for help and they find you an opportunity make sure you follow through, thank everybody you meet and make a good impression always as you never know what may happen in the future.    Don’t give up  Don’t ever give up, if you give up on yourself you may miss the opportunities you are looking for.       BEST MOMENTS  ‘One of the easiest ways to spend money is on subscriptions you no longer use’    ‘We all suffered as a result of it’  ‘Sometimes it can just feel like it goes on forever’    ‘Sometimes you get things you didn’t expect’    ‘Being open-minded will make you more visible in the job market’    ‘If you spend all of your time in front of your laptop it will drive you nuts’    ‘Make sure you get out there in the real world and enjoy the things you like doing’    ‘Keep asking people if they can help’    ‘You could be doing freelance work tomorrow’    ‘It’s a good way of keeping yourself busy’    ‘It may give you more opportunities in the future'     VALUABLE RESOURCES     https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/serial-stress-killer/id1438515546?mt=2        ABOUT THE HOST  After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. How to Deal With Short Term Cash Problems

Serial Stress Killer

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 13, 2019 16:00

Let’s not kid ourselves… we need money to live! And, if there comes an unfortunate time that you have to find cash ASAP so you can put food on the table, know that there is always a solution.  Today in the Stress Serial Podcast, Chris helps you how to deal with your short-term cash problems. It’s absolutely stressful when we are in financial turmoil. So, if you finally acknowledged that you’re having a short-term cash problem, it’s time to get moving. Chris suggests different solutions – from selling unimportant stuff to looking for a job to borrowing money. It would be best if we do these things properly to not let it happen again, so tune in to know the best strategy for you!  KEY TAKEAWAYS  Acknowledge that you’re having a short-term cash problem. This is always the first step, and a step that you shouldn’t fail to do. Once you’ve done this and has already pinpointed the problem, it’s easier to find solutions.  When it comes to finding solutions, you have to set aside your ego. Clear your mind and learn how to be resourceful and creative.   Take note that there’s a high chance that you might do jobs that you don’t normally do since you’re having cash problems. You must be willing to get out of your comfort zone to survive.  Do I have anything that I can sell? Start scouring your wardrobe, your shelves, etc. for things that aren’t useful anymore and you’re willing to let go.  Look for odd jobs, freelance works, project-based commitments, etc. There are thousands of available job postings online. All you have to do is search for them.  Borrow money. Only do this if you’re confident that you can pay it back.  Friends and families are the easiest to approach when you need the cash but if you fail to pay your debt, you might risk the relationship.  Talk to your bank about an overdraft. Most banks don’t agree with small amounts. If this happens, you can consider lenders.  BEST MOMENTS  “If you do have short term crippling financial difficulties, then you have to accept this problem. You got to accept it as a challenge that you got to deal with.”  “Whatever you do, don’t hope for miracles to happen.”   “It’s better to survive and do a crappy job than to be at certain types of work and starve to death.”  “If you’ve got a good friend or in good terms with your family, you got to think really long and hard about borrowing money that you can’t pay back because it will probably bite you in the ass.”  “Ultimately, financial stress is one of the biggest challenges that we face as human beings.”  ABOUT THE HOST  After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on.  CONTACT METHOD  Contact the show:  https://serialstresskiller.com  https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialstresskiller  https://www.instagram.com/serialstresskiller  Support the show - https://www.patreon.com/serialstresskiller  What’s been your favourite episode so far? Being funny& Coping With Stress; With Award Winning Comedian Tony Law

Serial Stress Killer

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 6, 2019 76:05

In this episode, Chris is interviewing the award-winning comedian, Tony Law. They discuss his career as a comedian and how he has dealt with stress during his professional journey. Tony talks with honesty and candour about the challenges he has faced and provides a fascinating insight into the world of a successful comedian. Listen in now to hear more.   KEY TAKEAWAYS We often look at people in the public eye and their personas and but need to remember that everyone has anxieties and challenges, as humans we are essentially all the same. Why do you think your style of comedy appeals to people? I think it’s the subject matter I always do some self-deprecation, making a victim of yourself when you are the one who’s behaved badly. I go and see lots of other comedians and then try to find a subject that is completely different to them something they haven’t thought of, to use when I’m writing. I have my little niche and try to keep my shows interesting doing one or two bits that are a little bit naughty, to catch people out a bit.   What is the professional world of comedy like? The day to day is very stressful, and I’ve been doing it for so long now, I can’t do anything else. Before being a comedian, I tried lots of other jobs, but nothing was a career choice, comedy is who I am. It’s a very insecure job and there is always the stress of needing to pay for the essentials in life such as food and rent. The stressful part is the worry, there is always the joy of performing but the stress is always in the background.   What has your career journey been? I’ve found it difficult not to be resentful of those who have alternative means and can spend a year perfecting a comedy routine without the stress of needing to get laughs at the pub gig every week. When it is your job you have to generate an income and so as a comedian its always on to the next gig with lots of travelling in between. The pub gigs are a good discipline to help you to find the funny, the expectation is that you will get laughs and it is an opportunity to make sure your material can entertain. Festivals such as The Edinburgh Fringe festival are echo chambers for the liberal arts, reflecting back things people already think. If you are a brave comedian you will be doing a show to the crowd at a NASCAR race event, not the fringe where everyone already has the same view. Ultimately it's about getting laughs and trying to be original and if you have a message at the end people should be able to make up their own minds later. You’re taking your audience on a journey. There’s thought behind it but not necessarily literal thought, it's more about a feeling.   Who were your comedy heroes growing up? All the classics such as Monty Python, but I came to them late, I was 15 when I first experienced them, and it changed my life. I was a funny kid all my life, that was how I got my love or attention, I was always the funny guy, it was when I discovered Monty Python that I realised comedy was a thing. I also hugely enjoy and appreciate the comedy work of The Goons and the genius of Spike Milligan, the comedy that isn’t saying anything but still makes you laugh.   Do you think comedy has become more or less stressful over the years? Early in my career, I found it really stressful because clubs can be bear pits and I’m not really suited to the heckling in that environment because it changes what you do, and you become combative. I attributed a lot of my stress in the early part of my career to nerves, I am in a very different place in my career now and still have nerves but it’s different as they are about excitement. The competitive aspect of individuals in the comedy profession hasn’t changed. Earlier in my career, there were fewer comedians, but a lot fewer gigs available, now there are lots of opportunities even though there are many more comedians. I feel the stress more now because I have dependents, children who I need to be able to look after. I have responsibilities and so the end result, to make a living,  is more important now.   Can you learn from the mistakes you make? The first 2 years of being sober were tricky because I was trying to find out who I was. You are in a position of having wisdom but are lacking maturity. You think you don’t need to fix yourself and just want people to like you this can lead to you be an untrue person. Sometimes you have to be brutal and honest with yourself so that you can look after and support your family. As soon as you are able to acknowledge your true nature then you are able to manage it effectively. If you can overcome your confidence you can own the world, often its confidence that holds us back.   BEST MOMENTS ‘My comedy veers quite a lot into art’ ‘You get into problems you didn’t even know existed’ ‘I don’t try and do anything that I don’t find funny’ ‘I feel like I’m at home everywhere in Britain’ ‘You’ve got to sell your soul’ ‘You’re constantly scanning to identify any possible dangers’ ‘It’s not brave telling each other about what we already think’ ‘You can’t be so precious about what you do’ ‘My comedy is about me trying to find my place in the world’ ‘It’s about me trying to navigate and find out how I can be funny’ ‘Driving is the thing that really helps me with stress.' ‘I listen to podcasts and audible books when I’m in the car’   VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/serial-stress-killer/id1438515546?mt=2   ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on.   CONTACT METHOD Contact the show https://serialstresskiller.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialstresskiller https://www.instagram.com/serialstresskiller Support the show - https://www.patreon.com/serialstresskiller What’s been your favourite episode so far? 15 million working days were lost to stress and its associated disorders between 2017 and 2018.    Stress in the workplace is a reality that we all face. In this podcast, Chris provides us with practical guidance about how to tackle stress in any workplace. If you dread Monday morning then listen in and find out what you can do about it. KEY TAKEAWAYS If you are suffering from stress in the workplace you must talk to your boss Most companies are aware that stressed employees are not productive. You need to ask for help because you want to find a solution and be a better employee for them Start your day with a positive routine This builds good habits and means you start well. Have breakfast, nobody has ever felt their best on an empty stomach. Each morning before you start your workday spend 20 minutes doing something for yourself Try getting into the office earlier Not always a popular choice but it can make the journey less stressful and the probability of being a few minutes late. It provides an opportunity to get your thoughts in order and it makes a good impression. Be careful of malicious gossip It’s easy to get caught up in moaning and negative comments. If you are involved in regular conversations that are negative you are not going to feel good about yourself. Be organised and focused Being cluttered and disorganised is stressful. You need to reduce the clutter as it will drain your energy, clear clutter regularly to stay organised. Keep perfectionism in check If you are a perfectionist learn you are never going to get it right. Ask your boss how you are doing as this may be a more positive critique than the one you would give yourself. Are you in the right job You need to make the job you have, work better for you or change your job. If you hate your job, you’ve tried and tried but still dread Monday morning then you need to make a change. You need to schedule after work destress activities Regular exercise is great to promote feelings of positivity. Ensure you eat nutritious food, you are what you eat. Try and challenge your brain in new ways Talk to friends and family Ask them how they are feeling, helping others will help you to feel more positive about yourself. BEST MOMENTS ‘It's in everybody’s best interest to try and help you’ ‘Explain how you are feeling in honest terms’ ‘It’s a much more progressive conversation’ ‘If you are going to moan all day how you will ever feel positive and not stressed?’ 'Ask yourself are you just going through the motions’ ‘Is it time to retrain?’ ‘Whatever you do at work you need to ensure it is not stressful’ ‘Try and avoid negative people as this will impact on you. Timothy D Craggette is the host and founder of the Swift Kick Show - A radio show created for the WANNA-preneur and anybody looking for tips, advice, and tactics so they can get an edge in building their online empire.   In this episode, Chris and Timothy discuss stress for the individual and for the entrepreneur.     KEY TAKEAWAYS  Are entrepreneurs more resilient?  Some entrepreneurs use stress to get them motivated and moving whilst other people cause their own stress by the way they go about things. However, the stress is caused it will always need relieving in some way.    Do we become better at stress as we grow older?  Most of the time we are set in our ways, so adapting our ways of thought isn’t easy.    There are some people who are more open and adventurous and for these people there is the opportunity to develop better coping and relieving mechanisms for stress as they grow older and more experienced in life.    You undertake work with kids, what sort of work do you do?  Growing up in the inner city you are exposed to the challenging aspects of city life but I was able to overcome a lot of things that others succumbed to. When I looked back I saw a lot of kids who didn’t have the family support system that I had growing up. I saw it as one of my goals to help kids see a different way and work for a non-profit organisation to realise this goal.  The kids have the opportunity to visit ivy league colleges and see what they could do. It’s about experiencing life beyond their understanding gaining a new perspective and they get to see an example of something great.  We are trying to show them that there are other people like them live good and impactful lives.    How do you think technology is impacting the younger generation?  The big thing is communication when I meet the kids in the summer program their phone use is restricted. They find it difficult at first but then you get to observe some amazing interactions that are much more in depth. There is a place for it but there also needs to be a responsibility for its use.      All of the technology we have now doesn’t add to the quality of the conversation, the breadth and depth of being able to reach out and touch someone and actually see and feel their expression.    How do you combat stress?  When I’m feeling stressed being around my music brings me joy and relieves my stress.    I have an extensive record collection and have music that covers all emotions. My wife and friends help as does my show. I do the show for fun, everyone volunteers and that, for me,  is a community and the greatest stress reliever.    You’ve got to be able to find joy in your life somewhere. Something you can fall back on and is a passion. Finding joy often comes from somewhere unexpected. Try and find out what your passion is, then claim it as your own.    Is there an entrepreneur in everyone?  Everyone is an entrepreneur they are just at different levels. I believe everyone sells from the kid negotiating for a juice to the person arguing for a raise.    Everyone has the innate ability to sell something but not everyone can use it for entrepreneurship    What are your tips for starting out as an entrepreneur?  Sometimes best to use your current position as leverage to be able to move forward in your new business.    Everyone has the ability to start something small and grow it. I don’t think that a passion makes a good business, as business is about supply and demand and not everyone wants your craft project.      BEST MOMENTS   ‘A life beyond their understanding, a new perspective’    ‘They get to see an example of something great’    ‘Working with the media is about relationships’    ‘Sometimes what you see is all you are ever going to see’   ‘When it comes for time for us to show up we have to show up’   ‘I was able to overcome a lot of things that others succumbed to’   ‘It’s a very curated view of the world’    ‘There is a huge need for reconnection at a human level’   ‘Knowing people is what relieves my stress’    ‘There is that human activity of being connected’    ‘We still are social beings and operate in tribes’       VALUABLE RESOURCES  https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/serial-stress-killer/id1438515546?mt=2       ABOUT THE HOST  After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. When you successfully asked somebody out on a date? How do you make the process a good adventure rather than a cataclysmic catastrophe? In this episode of Serial Stress Killer Podcast, Chris chats with Mary Balfour, a top dating guru in the UK, about acing your first date. First dates are a make or break for every single pair out there looking for some chemistry. Learn how to mitigate stress before, during, and after your first date. Mary promises that the strategies she shares will improve your dating game. If you ask why your Mr Maybe or Ms Maybe haven’t contacted you yet for a second date, then make sure to listen in since Mary discusses the top no-no’s – that we hope you haven’t done – during first dates. There will also be tips for first-timers, especially flirting, one of the most essential skills in dating. The dating world can be challenging to get into so now’s the time to observe, listen, and learn from the expert. KEY TAKEAWAYS Even people who claim they know all about love and dating or who are confident about their conversational skills can break into pieces when he goes on a first date with someone. Stress might come in when we worry too much of the outcome of the first date. Mary has worked with tens of thousands of people regarding dating. She has seen ever since what and whatnots of the dating world. It’s easy for her now to see the outcome of a person’s dating move. Tips when you plan the first date. Set the stage for the ultimate performance. Choose a beautiful place where you can talk and hear each other. This is to make sure you don’t get stressed by the environment during your first date. Texting is the best way of arranging a date. In this way, you reserve all possible small talks when you meet. Your first date has to be short. It becomes disastrous when it gets too long. Finish it a little earlier than expected. Keep them on their toes leaving them to be more curious about you. Another thing that might bring stress is when you talk about yourself or listen to someone talk about himself. As much as possible, there should be balance, truthfulness, and no expectations during an exchange of stories, ideas, and opinions. Flirting is normal if you want to build chemistry. It’s all about you and another person feeling good about themselves. Use flattery, playfulness, and curiosity. Flirting needs practice. You can even learn it through flirting courses. Everyone is capable of flirting. According to Mary, one thing that changed everything is not technology, it’s contraception. Multiple dating became a thing. She also notices that people have set their eyes on completing their checklist of what makes their perfect partner. That is why most dates don’t reach second dates. Valentine’s Day may not be the most romantic day for everyone. It’s also a very commercialised day. Though, it’s a good reminder of love, affection, and friendship. BEST MOMENTS “The stress level or problem perhaps to behave inappropriately or in a way that might sabotage the date – this can happen often.” “Dating is actually stressful because of your first date particularly is like an exam. You know you’re on show. Their expectations which can be very high are nothing quite realistic on both sides… which can get in the way of people behaving and interacting naturally.” “Once people start talking about problems on a date, it does spell disaster. You’ve got to keep the first date really light-hearted and a bit flirty; small talk, not big talk.” “When people fall in love, it’s when they’re really relaxed.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Marriages Are Made in Bond Street: True Stories from a 1940s Marriage Bureau by Penrose Halson The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss Serial Stress Killer on iTunes ABOUT THE GUEST Mary Balfour is one of the most experienced dating gurus’ in the UK, running her multi-award-winning, London-based matchmaking agency Drawing Down the Moon for over 30 years.  Author of Smart Dating: how to find your man (shortly out in its third edition) Mary also shares her field-tested dating strategies and tips via her YouTube Dating Success Channel.  As a seasoned guest of TV and radio, Mary talks with passion about the wider issues of relationships and the dating industry. Why Being Honest Can Reduce Your Stress

Serial Stress Killer

BEING HONEST CAN REDUCE YOUR STRESS Can being honest reduce your stress? In this episode, Chris tackles honesty and deceit. He explores the reasons why we lie and the stress it causes. If you want to understand more about why we lie and why being honest can reduce your stress listen in now. KEY TAKEAWAYS Why are you Lying? The idea that you might hurt someone’s feelings often leads to people lying and saying yes to something in an attempt to please. When you say yes in this context you will immediately feel stressed. Lying creates inner conflict and you are paving a path of deceit as soon as you lie. You are then also responsible for making sure the lie is not discovered. What does the Truth give you? If you’ve ever lied and then realised that you’ve got to confess to it then the feeling when you tell the truth is the lifting of stress caused by the lie. If you are honest you have no fear of anything and no fear of anyone discovering something. It gives you power over your destiny and enables you to be the person in control of your narrative. Why do we shy away from the truth? We sometimes want people to think we are better than we are or we might be ashamed of who we are. Many of us can be ashamed of our emotions or thoughts and worry that others won’t like us because of them. What are the physical and mental effects? When a lie is told the body releases cortisone and the heart rate increases as the body move into a fight or flight response. Following the lie, your brain has to work overtime to perpetuate that lie. Overtime anxiety caused by the lie can result in increased stress. Depending on the what was said you may have to lie further to support the initial lie increasing both the deceit, the responsibility and accompanying stress of perpetuating the web of deceit. BEST MOMENTS ‘Be brave and set sail on a new course’ ‘The long term the stress of living a lie is worse than being honest’ ‘Is it worth living a life where you don’t tell the truth?’ ‘If you are telling someone else a lie then you are telling yourself a lie’ ‘We are all individuals and unique’ ‘The idea that people may not like me because of my thoughts’ ‘You know you’re not being honest’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/serial-stress-killer/id1438515546?mt=2 ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. Tune in to find out how to listen to your gut – it has something important to say! KEY TAKEAWAYS What does Your Gut Do? Previously scientists thought the gut was only concerned with the mechanical process of digestion. Now it’s understood that it is far more complicated and contains 500 hundred million neurons which make up the enteric nervous system. What is the Vagus Nerve? The vagus nerve runs from the top of your brain to your gut. 90% of the fibres in the vagus nerve carry information up from the gut and its these signals from the gut that influence the brain and its behaviour. When it isn’t functioning properly you can suffer from a host of different problems including obesity, mood disorders and seizures. Where Is Our Second Brain? The enteric nervous system (ENS) is a huge mesh of neurons located in our gastrointestinal tract. It's the largest collection of neurons found in the body outside of the brain, and because of its ability to operate entirely independently it has often been referred to as our ‘second brain’. Why are Probiotics Important? Beneficial bacteria in the gut called probiotics support all aspects of health including your metabolism, cognitive function and immune system. How can you look after your gut better? Reduce stress - where you can reduce the stress in your life as this will also help your gut health. Eat slowly – this ensures food is digested properly Drink plenty of water - this supports the mucus lining of the gut wall Take additional probiotic supplements - your gut is full of probiotics, but you can give it a boost BEST MOMENTS ‘When I started finding out about the gut it was a light bulb moment’ ‘Give your gut a cuddle and tell it, you love it’ ‘The probiotics in the gut have a huge influence on your mood’ ‘This is why you should always listen to your gut as it has something important to say’ ‘Your gut plays a huge role in your mental well-being’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/serial-stress-killer/id1438515546?mt=2 ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. In this episode, there is an amazing free gift that will enable you to make any tough decisions in 15 minutes. Chris explains how he developed ‘The Tough Decision Matrix’ and how it can help you. Listen in, to find out how to access the Matrix and begin simplifying your life now!   KEY TAKEAWAYS The problem It can be difficult to say no to other people, this can lead to a situation where you are trying to please everybody else. When in this position, other’s values are the ones by which you are living.   If you have creative energy it is likely that you will be excited about new projects and seek to take on new things all the time. This can result in you being someone who starts lots of projects but doesn’t complete them.   Undertaking and committing to multiple projects can lead to you becoming so busy that you can only be reactive to situations.   Feeling out of control and losing focus on what’s important to you can lead to you being stressed.   The Solution Talking through your current situation will enable you to gain an overview and perspective. You will recognise what needs to change - from your workload to creating more time to look after yourself.   If all aspects of the projects you have undertaken are interconnected it can be challenging to envisage how to achieve the changes necessary to make your life balanced.   ‘The Tough Decision Matrix’ enables you to achieve the changes you need successfully. It allows you to accurately plot each consideration against the values that are important to you.   To simplify your life, you need to make tough decisions about letting go of something or doing it in a different way ‘The Tough Decision Matrix’ can be effectively used in any scenario to plot out the challenges and clearly show the solution.     BEST MOMENTS ‘Find it difficult to say no to anything ‘   ‘It’s not going to get you where you want to be’   ‘A process that allows you to regain control’   ‘When you feel stressed it’s because you feel like you are not in control’   ‘Fell a bit out of love with everything’   ‘Was doing what I wanted but had committed to all these various projects all at once’   ‘The choices I’d made became weights around my neck, heavy ones to carry around each day instead of inspiring me’     VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/serial-stress-killer/id1438515546?mt=2   http://marydaniels.co.uk/     ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on.     CONTACT METHOD Contact the show https://serialstresskiller.com https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialstresskiller https://www.instagram.com/serialstresskiller Support the show - https://www.patreon.com/serialstresskiller What’s been your favourite episode so far? Concerns About Electronic Screens And Children (a rant)

Phones, iPads and laptops all have an addictive quality. We are all spending more and more time in front of screens with children spending even more time. People are becoming increasingly addicted to screen usage which triggered the BBC to publish an article about a recent study that states that parents shouldn’t be as worried about the screen time usage of their kids as previously thought. In this episode, Chris takes apart the survey to give his thoughts on firstly why others sources are better, and secondly why all adults should be better role models in limiting their screen time. KEY TAKEAWAYS Mobile screen time is very addictive, especially with children. Children who can’t even speak yet can be addicted to electronic devices. Addiction to screen time affects us all. But we as adults have to act as role models. You can’t spend hours on a tablet and then tell your kids that they should stop. The study on the BBC report is fundamentally flawed. It was a study of 389 reports, and they only cited 181 as potential, which is less than half, then only 13 made the final cut in the study. To publish a survey you need to show at least 2,000 respondents to make it statistically valid. There’s was much less. This study stated that there is no good evidence that time in front of a screen is toxic. However, they found that there was an association between obesity and depression. Both of which are toxic things. In a different survey done on a larger scale over a longer period of time, a different result was found. They asked teenagers how happy they are and where they spend their leisure time. The study found that there has been a huge decline with teenagers, dating, sleeping and hanging out with friends since 2007. Since the birth of the first iPhone. Screen time is a danger. We should be limiting mobile phone usage like sugar. We wouldn’t want our kids to eat Mars bars all day. In an ideal world, what would you want your kid's leisure time to look like? BEST MOMENTS ‘Children are addicted to screen time.’ ‘These devices are flashy and really attractive to kids.’ ‘Do as you say.’ ‘They aren’t the root of all the world's problems but they certainly aren’t the core.’ ‘You need at least 2,000 respondents to make a survey statistically relevant.’ ‘Since 2007 a huge decline in friends hanging out.’ ‘Teenagers who spend more time on screen activities are more likely to be less happy.’ ‘We should treat mobile phone usage like sugar.’ ‘The media should be more responsible.’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Atlantic Article - https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/09/has-the-smartphone-destroyed-a-generation/534198/ The BBC Article Worry less about children's screen use, parents told - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-46749232 Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation? https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/09/has-the-smartphone-destroyed-a-generation/534198/ ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. In this heartfelt episode, Chris explains how his passion for sharing his experiences about stress and wanting to help others inadvertently turned into a source of stress! If you want a reminder about balance and how we can all achieve it, this podcast is a must to begin a new year with a new focus. KEY TAKEAWAYS There are unexpected challenges when doing anything. This applies to this podcast as any podcast requires a level of preparation and research. Trying to ensure that every show is the best it can be can put the host under pressure. For Chris this was linked to the ‘fear factor ‘– the fear of not being able to create the best show possible. To mitigate this he over prepared and as a result of this lost focus on the important reason for hosting a podcast - to create an enjoyable show. In trying to create a series that helped to share experience and relieve stress for others Chris realised he had created an incredibly stressful lifestyle for himself. This reflective learning curve has helped to redefine the focus and structure of the podcast moving forward. What can you learn from this episode? Trying to juggle too many things at once is not sustainable- try do something about it If you lose sight of what is important you need to take time out to find out what it is. You always have choices, you can always change to make things better. This may mean changing direction completely. If you are not happy either drop it or change direction. Even if you’re invested in something financially you must consider walking away from that choice if it doesn’t make you happy. Almost nobody gets it the right first time and that’s ok. You can learn from experience and change things around to keep moving forward. BEST MOMENTS It’s a symbiotic relationship’ ‘Managed to create a show where I’m not really being me’ ‘Stress is a symptom that can come and go’ ‘Look back now at this brutal learning curve as useful’ ‘During this time I’ve put myself under a lot of pressure, because of the ‘fear factor’’ ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. “Stress is the enemy and you are the killer.” CONTACT METHOD Website:serialstresskiller.com Facebook Group:https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialstresskiller Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/serialstresskiller Email:admin@serialstresskiller.com Support the show https://www.patreon.com/serialstresskiller

Time to put down that tub of vanilla ice cream you’re holding! yes, stress could make you fat. But there are ways we could alleviate stress itself and that’s what we are going to dive into in this episode of Serial Stress Killer Podcast. Chris clarifies that it’s not just your comfort foods – which are processed, high in fat or high in sugar – that contribute to the excess weight, it can be a lot of things. You may be lacking sleep and exercising less. Listen in to know how we can stop overeating and avoid insulin resistance. Chris also enumerates the causes and symptoms of insulin resistance. It’s now time to switch to a healthy diet and get on that treadmill! KEY TAKEAWAYS Stress & Overeating Why stress can cause people to overeat? For a short term, stress shuts down the appetite. Then, the body increases the cortisol levels which trigger you to eat. Stress affects food preferences. Stressed people prefer foods that are high in fat and high in sugar. These foods do dampen stress-related responses and emotions. Stressed people also lose sleep, exercise less, or drink more alcohol that can contribute to excess weight. Insulin Resistance Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas that regulates the amount of glucose in the blood. The lack of it results to diabetes. Insulin resistance is the inability of the body to convert what you eat to the energy needed resulting in a lot of glucose in the blood, which then becomes fat. Factors that can cause insulin resistance: Releasing insulin all the time because of high-sugar, high-fat and processed foods Sleep deprivation Being overweight BEST MOMENTS “It’s sometimes easy to forget why we do things in the moment and especially if we’re not in a good mental place. So, it’s important for you to recognize where you’re responding to your stress in an unhealthy way and do what you can to put the brakes on.” “Stress really is all in the mind which means that we can get stress on trivial things.” “Being in the state of constant stress will likely make you eat more.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Why stress causes people to overeat – Harvard Health ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. “Stress is the enemy and you are the killer.” CONTACT METHOD Contact the show Website: serialstresskiller.com Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialstresskiller Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialstresskiller Email: admin@serialstresskiller.com Support the show https://www.patreon.com/serialstresskiller

Means you can do it when you want to and free’s up time to spend doing the things you want to do. For food shopping make sure you’re not trying to do it on Christmas Eve, it will defineatly be very stressful at this time.   Plan your Christmas exercise routine The Gym might be only be open for some of the time but there is the great outdoors. even if you only manage 20 minutes a day, you will feel the effects and your body will thank you for it .   Try and take a break from work This can be hard to do lap tops and phones always within reach but if you can take some time use it in a different way and although Christmas is a time for giving be kind to yourself as well. Remember you have to nourish your mind and body   Don’t succumb to peer pressure you might find you’re invited to lots of things sometimes by people you don’t see very often. If you want to go thats great but don’t feel you have to. Maybe consider having a few nights off and save your energy for the people who are most important to you. People you love the most including yourself. Use this time to forgive yourself and others This could be a time to let go of negative feelings. Welcome back to another episode of the Serial Stress Killer podcast with your host Chris Hackett. In this episode, Chris interviews Matthew Rundle,  the award-winning co-founder of Mayfair Aesthetics, one of London’s leading laser hair removal clinics. Chris talks about how he came to setting up his company, the fundamentals and values for his business, and how he keeps his stress levels low. Key Takeaways What Is Aesthetic Clinics? We are a series of small boutique clinics focused on laser hair removal. Our lasers are really up to date so that they work for all skins types not just fairer skins types which have meant that we have been able to open our potential customers to everyone. We keep standards really high as we are small and only use laser hair removal, so we aren’t running around doing lots of different jobs and doing them less well. Is It More Stressful for a Business Owner to Keep High Standards? I would be more stressed if the service we do at Mayfair Aesthetics wasn’t delivering to a high quality of service. That would be stressful. We place a lot of emphasis on quality of customer service and ensuring that our customers get the best possible experience Design The Experience To Avoid the Problems I’d Seen Before. Matthew highlights that his experience working for other companies in the beauty industry and seeing day to day problems they had in their business has been fundamental to the thinking behind his business. So one of the aims of the business was to solve a lot of these problems from day one. For example, having electronic medical records of customers rather than in paper form. That has saved time and lowered potential stress levels Having a Signed Agreement of the Expected Results. It’s really important that this is signed at the start of a course of treatment. This has helped prevent and avoid a lot of problems and complaints. This makes sure that the expectations of the customers are managed effectively and reduces complaints. It helps to make sure your staff are healthy and are less stressed so they aren’t having to deal with unhappy customers. What Do You do to Look After Your Staff’s Mental Health? The way I wanted the business to run was for staff to be able to get on with their job and not have to deal with the problems of a badly run business. From day one we decided that we weren’t going to operate like previous places that I had worked in. We added extra time in our appointments so staff aren’t rushing around, and you allow customers to be a little late, it means that everyone is more relaxed How Big A Problem are Unhappy Customers if You’re not set up Correctly? In the service industry that is where the biggest stress comes from. Other areas like stock or cash flow can also be stressful if you have managed them badly. We always try to make sure that we have lots of stock that will last for weeks. Being prepared for possible problems and trying to avoid them is a key aspect. Was running Mayfair Aesthetics what you Expected? It is similar to how I have run other businesses before as a General Manager. I have been in roles in the past where I was doing everything where company owners had abdicated their interest in the company. But not having to report to someone else who I didn’t trust and think has been a positive experience as I have 25 years experience in the beauty industry which has given me valuable experience and insight into the business. Do you consciously do things to keep your stress levels low? Additionally, to the business, I do some management consultancy where I go in and help other companies. I can help sometimes improve their marketing, PR to help them improve their sales. That’s very rewarding but I also enjoy reading, seeing friends and making sure I sleep well. Specialise Rather than go for lots of different types of treatments. Specialism has been a key business model for us. We have focused in on one treatment which has meant that we are able to deliver a high-quality service and not get bogged down with other areas. Our location is essential all of our stores are close to a tube station so that you can extend your potential customer base out of the area you work in. The building and environment have to be beautiful, with a strong logo. Your pricing strategy has to be effective as well. If you are charging low prices why is that and can you deliver the same level of service with those prices. Best Moments ‘It’s all about being very well prepared in each clinic to ensure that the standards are kept high.’ ‘Design The Experience To Avoid the Problems I’d Seen Before’ ‘Set up the expectations of your customers from the start.’ ‘Being prepared for possible problems.’ ‘Training is paramount.’ ‘Your have the independence but also the accountability when you run your own business.’ ‘Getting enough sleep is really key.’ ‘Specialism has helped to develop our business.’ ‘Make sure your staff are 100% trained.’ ‘Good reviews are key from your customers.’ ‘Know all aspects of your business.’ ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. You've gotta be a bit of a badass to dominate stress and if you want to overcome it, you have to look at it strategically and unemotionally. In today’s episode, Chris challenges you to call five people today and explains why calling your friends can often melt away the jagged edges of your emotional landscape and create a more balanced frame of mind, reducing your stress and allowing you to lead a much happier life in general. You need to find time in your busy schedule to connect with the people that make you happy and find out how they really are and what's actually going on in their lives. When you scroll through your address book you'll discover so many people that you haven't spoken to in years. But remember life almost always improves when you spend time with those that you love and that unexpected actions of spontaneity can be so powerful and so meaningful. Remember “Stress is the enemy and you are the killer.” KEY TAKEAWAYS Speak with five people and form a connection. This is lost when all we do is scroll through social media so make sure your calls are spontaneous, don't pre-warn or pre-frame just call and make a personal commitment to yourself to ensure all of your calls are about the other person so that you can discover what challenges they're facing and see if you can help them out and offer a solution. Chris discovered that everyone was dealing with a personal challenge of some kind. It's easy to isolate yourself when you're going through some stuff, but calling others and hearing they're problems will give you a healthy dose of reality and reduce your own anxiety around your issues or stresses. A phone call can make a difference and draw people into conversions and pull the real stuff out. As humans, we need to keep our connections with others open at all times. By calling you're able to remind your friends on a much more personal level that you're there for them and that you can help them. BEST MOMENTS “This is especially important if you're not using social media. All you need to do is call five people and talk to them for 10-15 minutes per day” “Our social devices and media platforms give us the illusion of a connection with others but a phone call can mean the world to someone.” ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. Today, Chris talks to you about cognitive reappraisal and shares with you how to find new and different ways to create more positive emotion. Learn how to approach different situations with a different and more positive mindset. Understand the negative bias your emotional brain has and hear the examples Chris uses to show you cognitive reappraisal in action! If you haven’t yet joined the Facebook group follow the link and join the movement - Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialstresskiller   Remember “Stress is the enemy and you are the killer.”   KEY TAKEAWAYS The brain is where the bulk of the action happens when it comes to feeling good or bad. This means how we perceive a situation is how we act towards a situation, so if we can learn to modify it we will have a very powerful skill. It has to be a conscious process and this starts by identifying a negative thought when it appears and deciding that it’s an unwanted thought or action to partake in an unwanted activity. When you’re stressed your emotional side of your brain really takes centre stage and the rational side of your brain takes a back seat and unfortunately, your emotional brain is not 100% reliant and it tends to have a negative bias. Cognitive reappraisal is an emotion regulation strategy that involves changing the trajectory of an emotional response by reinterpreting the meaning of the emotional stimulus. For example, a person may fail a series of tests and think negatively about his or her performance upon first receiving the results. Cognitive reappraisal is about choosing to find new and different ways to create more positive emotion. BEST MOMENTS “Our emotional brain is wired to avoid danger and therefore has a bias towards safer decisions.” “If you’re are in a negative space you’re far more likely to want to change your approach.” ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. Welcome back to the Serial Stress Killer Podcast. This podcast is filled with goodness, packed full of vitamin C and protein infused magic, and today, Chris shares with you the pros and cons of supporting a (Rubbish) football team. Hear the levels of stress that football fans put themselves through, simply to support a team. Learn the bizarre theory behind it and understand how the relationship between fan and football can teach us some much-needed learnings to apply in our real life and real relationships. Remember “Stress is the enemy and you are the killer.” KEY TAKEAWAYS Football affects around 3 billion people globally and is constantly causing huge amounts of stress and heartache. Chris has supported Aston Villa from a very young age. A relationship that's lasted longer than any other, the longest commitment in Chris's life and it’s not all been plain sailing. Unlike marriages and relationships, the support for your club doesn't end. You're in it for the long haul. Once you align yourself with a football team, there's no going back. As a result of football, hundreds of millions of people are left feeling let down every year. It’s one of the most masochists of personal endeavours. Football fans feel the high hysteria and love for the team when you win a game, but if you support a rubbish team this is usually a one-off. Nevertheless, regardless of the result, you continue to support your team with the up-most passion. There could be tens of thousands or even millions of fans just like you, feeling anger, frustration, heartache, love and loyalty and every year you're filled with the hope that it might be different. This hope is given to you by the few select fans that end up elated and overjoyed at the team's success and you'll realise that this could be you. We allow ourselves to believe that it could be us celebrating, it could be us winning. The reality is all of us have the choice to leave any unfulfilling relationships and find pastures new. You just need to be brave, make a choice and move on. BEST MOMENTS “In all my years as a Villa supporter, I have encountered countless games that have left me feeling disappointed and wanting to leave, but I’ll always go back.” “Even in the darkest moments, we as football supports allow ourselves to hope.” ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. Why do we spend so much of our time and energy focusing on the stupid stuff that doesn’t really matter, when we have so much stuff going on? Why do we spend our time worrying and allow it to mess with our heads and fill us with dread? Why do we beat ourselves up with stupid thoughts when we should be focusing on positive things. These are all great questions and in today’s episode of the Serial Stress Killer Podcast, Chris rallies against the stupid shit that’s dragging you down and preventing you from enjoying life. All it does is add to your misery and stop you getting stuff done. So banish it. Remember “Stress is the enemy and you are the killer.” KEY TAKEAWAYS The frustration that you feel when the internet breaks or you hear those niggling comments from your family or friends. When you have a big and serious distraction in your life that demands all of your time and energy you are suddenly able to relegate all of those stresses to the back of your mind with relative ease. When this happens you don't toss and turn at night about the stupid stuff you've been worrying about because you've actually got some real problems to deal with. When we have something bigger to deal with we can perspective and understand the severity of the problems we need to deal with. So why do many of us seem to forget these nuggets of wisdom during the day to day when we have the most time and energy to deal with them? Stupid shit is triviality with teeth. It's where you develop an emotional response or a trigger that doesn't impact on anything other than your ego. It's spending hours thinking about something that shouldn't bother us. Do you think people in war-torn countries worry themselves with trivial things? If you ever find yourself thinking about stupid shit you need to be able to spot it. When you can do this quickly and effectively you will stress about things a lot less. We need to look at the bigger picture There are two main categories of stress. - It’s somebody else's bullshit - It’s circumstantial BEST MOMENTS “We can be utterly moronic at times.” "Why allow somebody else's words to ruin your day" “You have to be able to let go of the frustrations very quickly” ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. Chris talks about everything he’s done to combat stress, tackle insomnia and beat sleep deprivation.   Remember “Stress is the enemy and you are the killer.”   What’s been your favourite episode so far? Connect with Chris to let him know - admin@serialstresskiller.com   KEY TAKEAWAYS None of us are at our best when we are sleep deprived. We can’t think straight, we become short-tempered and we definitely have a reduced capacity for concentration. When you are depressed and sleep deprived you’re not always conscious of the situation and unaware of it’s causing you issues. Don’t get frustrated when you can’t sleep. Simply remind yourself it is only temporary and really it’s just one of those things. Don’t get stressed about it, just accept it.   After a night of insomnia, the day ahead will most likely be a struggle. Remember to remind yourself that you’re not at your best and attempt to reduce communication with others.   Instead of trying to sleep, I took the opposite approach and attempted to stay awake as long as I possibly could. I tried to change my mindset to stay awake, rather than needing to sleep.   Five Things To Try To Break Sleep Deprivation Never stay in bed for longer than two hours. Change your environment and move around. Remind yourself that your sleep deprivation is temporary and it’s permanent. Don’t stress about it. Don’t spend time worrying about it and stressing about it. Accept that, relieve your stress and move on. If you’re going through sleep deprivation you might as well do something with your new found time. Instead of trying to go to sleep, do the opposite and stay awake. This will change the whole dynamic.   BEST MOMENTS “Sleep is kind of all or nothing. You either drop off straight away, or you toss and turn for hours.” “It’s always better to move about and change your environment when you can’t sleep.” “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a bad nights sleep and tried to go to bed the next day about 7pm and found myself wide awake 2 or 3 hours later.”     ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on.   CONTACT METHOD Contact the show Website: serialstresskiller.com Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialstresskiller Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/serialstresskiller Email: admin@serialstresskiller.com Support the show https://www.patreon.com/serialstresskiller

How to Tackle Self Doubt

Serial Stress Killer

Welcome back to another episode of The Serial Stress Killer Podcast. Today, Chris talks about doubt. Doubt is the key driver of stress, uncertainty loss of confidence. Doubt is what prevents us from making decisions and what keeps us questioning ourselves over and over. Doubt stops us from moving forward mentally, physically and conceptually and in today’s episode, Chris explains how you can use doubt to your advantage. KEY TAKEAWAYS Doubt makes us feel like we don't have control and it can easily become an epidemic. It's not pleasant because we want to have certainty in life, we want to be sure about what we're doing. Doubt can be crippling and it's easy to recognise, however, it's hard to fight it. No one is immune to self-doubt and even the successful will have questioned themselves. The feelings of a genuinely dangerous situation are similar to the feelings when we are starting something new. We feel or anticipate someone will judge us. By attempting new activities we will go outside of our comfort zone but it's essential to growth. If we do the same activities over and over again we will feel less doubt in our lives, but you will feel board and feel less excitement in your life. Our brains often try to protect us with feelings of doubt so we can hold back on decisions. Self-doubt will always be with you, but it's there to protect you. How To Overcome Feelings Of Fear & Doubt You have to learn to overcome your inner critic. Look to your past and remember and recognise your successes. You have to be aware of the comparison trap. Get a boost of optimism. Learn to view setbacks as temporary. You can and will correct your course along the way.   You will go through periods of doubt all of the time. If you compare yourself to other people and their successes your fear and doubt will come into play. A better way to go about things is to compare yourself to yourself and see how you've kept going, despite all the things that have been thrown at you.   You're not a failure just because you have failed. Sometimes things go well and sometimes they don't. You need to use failure to your advantage and move forward in a smarter way. BEST MOMENTS William Shakespeare - "Our doubts are traitors and make us lose the good we oft might win by fearing to attempt." Brian Tracey "Life is like an aeroplane journey. From the time you take off you will be off course 99% of the time" “Let others optimism and enthusiasm flow through you.” “By our very nature, we live in doubt. We have an uncertain future and it's changing all of the time. There are so many variables and parallels constantly shifting and it's so hard to be sure of anything.” “Doubt is simply an element of fear and fear is the emotion we feel when we see a potential threat or danger.” ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. There’s nothing like a deadline that could get you hyped and be doing what you need to be doing. That’s according to Adam Bloom, our guest for today’s episode of the Serial Stress Killer Podcast. Adam Bloom is an award-winning stand-up comedian and has been touring around the world to perform. Adam Bloom chats with Chris Hackett, your host, on how he manages to be as funny and successful as he can be in his profession without being dragged down by stress. Discover the ins and outs of the professional comedy world in the countries he’s been. Adam acknowledges that humour can be universal or local. And, that’s what Adam is great at – to be able to transcend through the difference and indifference of people. Adam sees to it that he gives his best and refuses to be affected by the pressure in every performance he does. Listen as he shares how he ‘negates’ stress and how he manages to see it the other way around to make it beneficial for his career and day-to-day life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Adam Bloom shares his stand-up comedy experience in different countries. He compares how different the humour is for different cultures. The language barrier is a big factor that Adam has been trying to beat to effectively communicate his punch lines. He shares that one time, he had to memorize a one-liner in the foreign language to get the most out of the audience's time. In what way does stress manifest itself in professional comedy? Adam shares that making sure that putting up a great show on time is sometimes difficult to manage especially if some technical and organizational problems happen. Adam does a few gigs a night so to arrive early for the gigs and not get the schedule tangled up is a priority of his. Don't let stress affect your performance. Adam says that once you've alleviated the stress and do what you got to do, there's a feeling of relief and fulfilment. It's more different when at the very start you never knew you could do it. Sleep is very important for us to stay healthy and not get stressed. It’s a form of reset which clears your head and makes you gain the energy back needed for the next day. Adam ‘negates’ the effects of stress. For example, when he’s about to catch the earliest train, he’ll see to it that he gets there 3-5 minutes early but if he, by chance, misses it, he uses the time to get some coffee. At least, he still gets to arrive on time wherever he’s going. What techniques does Adam use to lessen the stress during a stand-up gig? “If you can’t do anything, you just have to stop thinking about it. and if you stop thinking about it, you stopped being stressed.” – Adam BEST MOMENTS "That mind field... you're walking through your gig knowing that at any given moment, a joke will suddenly fail. You're not in your comfort zone because you're going, "Does this work?" So, the second night you're there is great because you find out what you did wrong." – Adam "Being put under pressure means you have to do something... If you cannot do anything, then stress is wasted energy." – Adam "I'd rather be stressed than bored and I'd rather be under pressure than bored." – Adam “If you have the ability to clear your head, it’s a really really powerful thing.” – Chris VALUABLE RESOURCES Adam Bloom Official Website - adam-bloom.com/ ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. “Stress is the enemy and you are the killer.” ABOUT THE GUEST (ADAM BLOOM) Adam Bloom is an award-winning stand-up comedian and writer both in the UK and abroad. How can 80/20 help you when dealing with your emotional or mental challenges? In this episode of Serial Stress Killer Podcast, Chris Hatchett explains how the Pareto’s Principle can be applied in reducing our stress levels and increasing our productivity. Pareto’s Principle says that the 20% input equals 80% output. So, not only does this concept help grow business and industries, but it also helps every individual’s health and well-being. Discover how you can separate the important from the non-important stuff and how you could actually concentrate on what could be more impactful to your future. The 80/20 principle can help you acquire healthy habits for a start. Chris also shares his simple tool which he called the ‘80/20 Serial Stress Killer Murder Weapon’ for a more focused plan of action. KEY TAKEAWAYS Pareto’s Principle was identified by economist Vilfredo Pareto. He noticed the huge imbalance of land ownership in Italy. 80% of the land was owned by the 20% population. He says that it is not a rare occurrence but the natural order of things. Sometimes, we consume too much time dealing with the stress and pressure. Chris says we have to remove that habit because it’s wasting the energy for the entire day. Use 80/20 to identify what should you really concentrate on and what you shouldn’t be. If you recognize the 20% of your problems that are causing you all of the stress and you tackle them head-on, you get 80% benefits. An action is better than inertia. It’s better to get moving and act rather than stagnate. Use the hours you waste on worrying and stressing for something more valuable. Use the 80/20 principle when you’re stressed & overwhelmed with all your tasks and responsibilities. It helps put stress levels in order. It also lets you recognize other opportunities. Create a habit. Try practising it regularly for a month. Create an online calendar schedule that has notifications. BEST MOMENTS " I recommend: if you list all of the things that are stressing you out right now… I’m pretty sure that if you got 10 items, probably only 2, maybe 3 of those items will actually be real meaningful problems… and the rest are not you’re thinking about.” “Stress is almost always overwhelming and overwhelm comes from the feeling that you don’t have control over the situation.” “When you make those important decisions and you take those important actions, you’re moving towards resolution instead of floundering in your pool of despair.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Richard Koch Books 80/20 Serial Stress Killer Murder Weapon ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on.

According to Winston Churchill, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” BUT our host, Chris Hatchett, totally disagrees! So, in this episode of Serial Stress Killer Podcast, Chris presents his arguments how you should be taking this great quote from Churchill. Let’s all agree first that the ‘hell’ referred to is a metaphor we often use for the bad side of your mental state where you perceive pain, anguish, stress, etc. Chris emphasizes that NOBODY should be aiming to be at their worst. We should do everything to improve our mental health every single day. So, when you’ve seen that you’re going in the direction of your own hell just to be ablaze, veer away from it! KEY TAKEAWAYS According to Wikipedia, “hell, in many religious and folkloric traditions, is a place of torment and punishment in the afterlife.” If you’ve seen that you’re going to your bad mental place – hell, why would you choose to keep going? Nobody should want pain and torture. Most feel like staying in their own hells out of guilt or cowardice. They believed they deserved to be there and refused help from everyone around them. It’s mostly how we think, how we see difficult situations, and how unreachable are constructive solutions when we’re stressed. Chris’ mindset: “If you’re going through hell, turn left, turn right, or zigzag for a bit.” Find a way out of your mental hell. Be introspective. Look at what could be wrong and right. Listen to other people. BEST MOMENTS “If there is a place of damnation waiting for you, why hurry to get there early?” “Stress is a mental condition often caused by a lack of healthy perspective or inability to make choices.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Hell – Wikipedia Serial Stress Killer Facebook Group ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on.

There’s always a danger of consuming too many things – from Netflix binge-watching to heavy drinking to overeating. The same applies to the concept of Care. So, what are the dangers it brings when we become excessive about it? And, that’s what we’re going to discuss in this episode of Serial Stress Killer Podcast. Caring too much can lead to stress. Chris starts with simplifying it into 2 categories: caring for others and caring about what other people think. Then, he proceeds to demystify how each type of caring could backfire for you. Discover also how important balance is in every aspect of your life. Learn to prioritize your needs over others’ needs, know the fine line between selfishness and selflessness, and when to say no and when to say yes. KEY TAKEAWAYS 2 Categories of Caring: Caring for others Caring about what other people think You can’t say yes to everything. You can’t indulge every request or favours from other people. You can’t just accept the perceptions and opinions of you. Learn to weigh what matters and what doesn’t. There are people who might take advantage of you. At first, it could be just assistance they’re asking for, then, next thing you know you’re already full-time doing what they really need to be doing. You might not be assisting them in the wrong way. Look after yourself first. Know what is important to you. Personal time and energy are your own resources that you have control of. Ask yourself: Are they worth giving to the other person? Improving yourself is the priority. Stop stressing yourself about others. How do you know if you care too much about how people think of you? “The simple answer is that if you care at all what people think about you, you probably do care too much.” BEST MOMENTS “If your happiness is at the expense of somebody else’s, then it isn’t making the world a happier place.” “Balance is the key. If you’re not performing at your very best in terms of mental and physical health, chances are you won’t be able to care for the important people in your life.” “The most important people in your life think good things about you. And, as for the rest of them, who cares?” “Don’t make other people’s opinions stress you out.” ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on.

When dealing with stress, trace your way to its physiological effects. Discover how important it is to understand first how our body works in managing stress levels – how your brain reacts, what hormone is responsible for stress, and what’s the benefits of sleep. Chris also took the test before this episode to find out what Paula has to say about his’ brain holograms, organ systems, and even the external factors that could affect the body. Aside from these, Chris and Paula also talk about how people nowadays are dependent on technology and how different the lifestyle of the millennials are from older people. Even the types and levels of stress are different for the generations. KEY TAKEAWAYS HearthMath Training increases the capacity to prepare for, recover from, and adapt in the phase stress, challenge, and adversary. Social media is not going away. We don’t want it to go away despite the dangers it presents. Most are on it 24/7. We should learn how to manage the time we allot on looking at our phones, PCs, etc. Paula suggests to go out and appreciate nature. It improves your mind, body, and well-being. It gets you away from the technology’s toxicity. “Nothing can beat eyeball-to-eyeball.” Meeting people personally – compared to chatting with them through any tech – tightens the trust, understanding, and honesty in a relationship. It lessens relationship issues that can cause stress. Brain Functions: 2 Risk Assessment Centers of our brain: amygdala (quick to react but not accurate) and thalamus (slower but accurate) Amygdala hijack – immediate emotional response; shuts off our thinking Reptilian brain – controls the body’s vital functions Cerebral cortex – clever bit; what we need to empathize, evaluate, or solve problems Get enough sleep and stay away from blue screens an hour before rest time. It’s a good reset to recover energy so you can deal with what’s thrown at you. Keep distractions away from the bedroom. “The only tablets that should be in the bedroom are those you have to swallow with water.” Use stress as a source of adrenaline rush to get you going. In fact, cortisol, the biggest stress hormone, is at its most from 4AM to 9AM because that’s what gets us out of the bed. Heart Rate Variability is when beat per beat, the rate changes. It’s what gives the trace line. So, when we’re triggered, there’s a chaotic line. BEST MOMENTS “Certainly, there is an awakening now. And, people are realizing so we’re putting in our own measures to self-regulate because we can’t get away from using our phone – a weapon of mass distraction.” “Just being in nature produces useful chemicals for the body.” “The stress triggers may be different but the ways our bodies react is the same.” VALUABLE RESOURCES HeartMath ABOUT THE HOST After many years of dealing (badly) with personal stress for over 20 years, Chris Hackett is on a mission to help people understand and overcome stress and anxiety by tackling the problem head-on. “Stress is the enemy and you are the killer.” ABOUT THE GUEST (PAULA RUANE) Paula Ruane is a trained specialist who works with ground-breaking technology to accurately relieve stress levels.
