In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I talk with Kelli Stewart. Kelli Stewart was born in Atlanta and raised most of her life in Oglethorpe County, a rural community just outside of Athens, Georgia. Although both parents were not a consistent fixture in her life, Kelli's Grandmother, Ms. Amy Lou Faust, provided a stable and nurturing home environment where she raised Kelli to have an old soul that has served her well in life. Kelli is a graduate from Cedar Shoals High School in Athens, GA and credits her participation in ROTC as keeping her on the mostly straight and mostly narrow. Through the watchful care and guidance of her ROTC Instructor, Sgt. Fincher along with Ms. Sue Lee (English Teacher) and Shirley Daniel (Guidance Counselor) Kelli graduated from Cedar Shoals in 1996 and went on to study at Georgia State University. She completed her undergraduate studies at Kennesaw State University in 2011 where she earned a bachelor's degree from the Coles College of Business with honors. In addition to her degree, Kelli holds a wealth of knowledge regarding sports-based youth development as a resource for racial, social and economic justice and the impact sports have on the social-emotional development of youth. Today, Kelli, and her husband, C.J. Stewart, oversee two business ventures that they started together. Through Diamond Directors, they train and develop some of the country's top amateur and professional baseball athletes; Jason Heyward (Los Angeles Dodgers), Dexter Fowler (Chicago Cubs, World Series Champion), Andruw Jones (former Atlanta Brave), Peter Alonso (NY Mets), Kyle Lewis (Arizona Diamondbacks), and Andrew McCutchen (Pittsburgh Pirates) are a few notable professional clients. Through L.E.A.D., they train and develop some of Atlanta's hidden treasures in Atlanta Public Schools. L.E.A.D. provides inner city boys with the same opportunities to excel in life through baseball as the Stewarts' Diamond Directors clients with the focus being accessing higher education and community leadership. To date, L.E.A.D. Ambassadors have achieved a 100% high school graduation rate and a 91% college enrollment and scholarship rate (academic and athletic). Kelli and CJ have two beautiful daughters, Mackenzi (Southern University) and Mackenna (The Lovett School). To find out more about Kelli and the work that is being done at the L.E.A.D. Why Relentless Work Ethic is Key to Executive Search Success, with Vince Dunne, Ep #227

The Resilient Recruiter

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 22, 2024 72:43

When he started his search firm, Vince was told that you would make 100 grand in year one if you're lucky. In his first year, he did more than $600k in revenue! Was that just a lucky year? Definitely not. He would not even consider his 12 years in business his best year. What are Vince's key strategies in achieving this phenomenal result? In this episode, he shares two things: his belief system and his hard work.   Vince Dunne is the President of Dunne Search Group, an executive search firm based in South Carolina. For the last 12 years, he's specialized in recruiting salespeople for the biotech industry and has helped build some of the most important companies in cancer testing.   Episode Outline and Highlights [01:56] How Vince got into recruiting and how he was able to shorten his learning curve. [10:26] Transitioning from a top recruiter to a recruitment business owner. [14:27] Overcoming the scarcity mindset: would you be friends with a close competitor? [16:34] Pulling off $600k in his first year of business.  [25:51] How Vince set up 210 interviews to land 70 monthly placements. [35:10] Discussion on Retain vs Contingent? [36:53] Vince reveals his team size and structure. [42:10] How to pitch an exclusive search arrangement with your client. [45:25] Topic on tech stack and approach to reaching out to clients and candidates. [56:03] How to “make a name for yourself.” [59:12] The biggest adversity Vince faced in his career.   Pulling off $600k Revenue in His First Year Vince and I talked about his motivation to transition from being a top recruiter to launching his search group. “But I noticed I was getting my clients. Nothing was handed to me, and I thought it was because ‘Vince will figure it out. You know, he's. He's doing well. He's rookie of the year.' I'm hitting all my numbers every quarter… So I was getting my clients anyway. So why am I splitting my business? And so I felt like I was ready. I've got enough clients out there of people that want to do business with me.” Knowing that he was ready, he took on the challenge of becoming a recruitment business owner, leveraging the skills he learned and the relationships he built over the years. Remarkably, he was able to make more than $600k in revenue in his first year!   I wanted to dive deep into the causal factors of this phenomenal success. Vince believed that he was just lucky. But you will find out as we continue our conversation that there are two main ingredients for his secret sauce: his belief system & hard work. Vince was really competitive and strictly adhered to his no-fail mindset. He would reach out to ten people before 9:00 AM daily to generate leads. These traits enabled him to shorten his learning curve when he was just a rookie and surely contributed to his success as a business owner.   How to “Make a Name” For Yourself Another topic that resonates with me is Vince's emphasis on building a reputation and making a name for yourself. Vince's niche is in the Biotech industry, a very competitive circle, which means that your reputation is a huge deal. Vince shared insights on how he makes a name for himself and that people know him within the sales biotech world.   Reputation Through Results: Vince builds a strong reputation by consistently delivering results, making successful placements, and ensuring client satisfaction. Client Focus: He emphasizes the importance of caring for his clients, going above and beyond, and even working late hours to meet their needs. Referrals: Vince actively asks for referrals during and after a project to expand his network and connect with more potential clients and managers. LinkedIn Recommendations: He sometimes asks clients for LinkedIn recommendations to build credibility and visibility. Personal Connections: Vince maintains relationships by sending personalized gestures, like Christmas gifts, and ensuring that he remains in his clients' minds for future opportunities.   Building Relationships is Always Better in the Long Run   Vince shared an insightful take on building relationships versus burning bridges. If you have been unfairly treated by a client before, you will most likely relate to his story. I asked Vince about the biggest adversity in his career, and he shared that it was learning not to burn bridges.  His aggressive, competitive nature sometimes led to conflicts with clients, particularly when he felt he wasn't fairly compensated or recognized for his work.   Vince acknowledges that, in hindsight, there were times he should have taken the high road instead of standing his ground, which ultimately damaged relationships with some clients. He overcame this challenge by realizing the importance of choosing his battles wisely and maintaining long-term relationships, even if it meant compromising on smaller issues. He now prioritizes staying loyal to clients who treat him well, even if it means turning down business from competitors.    A key takeaway is that maintaining a positive image and strong relationships is crucial in the long run. Vince balances his competitive nature with a more strategic approach, focusing on clients who value and respect him while still holding onto the principles that have made him successful.   Vince Dunne Bio and Contact Info A graduate of the Coles College of Business, Vince Dunne brings his keen business acumen and 12 years of accomplished biotech search experience placing the most qualified candidates in both established corporations and start-up companies. Vince utilizes his proven, unique business model to conduct his search to locate and refer the ideal candidate(s) to meet the tailored, strategic needs of an organization, conserving their company resources and increasing corporate efficiencies.   Vince has helped build out some of the most important companies in cancer testing.   Having focused on many areas in biotech, the oncology and women's health space is where we spend most of our time.   We pride ourselves on being very well-known and trusted in the market.     Vince on LinkedIn Dunne Search Group website link People and Resources Mentioned Craig Picken on LinkedIn Rich Rosen on LinkedIn Connect with Mark Whitby Get your FREE 30-minute strategy call Mark on LinkedIn Mark on Twitter: @MarkWhitby Mark on Facebook Mark on Instagram: @RecruitmentCoach   Subscribe to The Resilient Recruiter If you've been enjoying the podcast, please take two minutes to leave a review. After a successful 19-year career in the clothing business, Michael Coles tested his entrepreneurial skills in 1977, when he co-founded Great American Cookie Company with an investment of only $8,000. Shortly after starting the company, he was involved in a near-fatal motorcycle accident and was told by doctors he would never walk again unaided. As Coles recovered through a self-designed rehabilitation program, he took the company from its first store in Perimeter Mall in Atlanta to hundreds of stores nationwide and, at the same time, set three coast-to-coast bicycling records. Michael Coles at Great American Cookie Company, 1994 When he started the Great American Cookie Company, there were three major cookie companies in business. One had almost 100 stores and the other two had 50 each. When he sold the company in 1998 with sales over $100 million, the Great American Cookie Company was the largest franchisor of cookie stores and the other three companies no longer existed. Coles announces run for the U.S. Senate, 1998 Coles’ commitment to community service led him to run for public office in 1996 as the democratic nominee for the House of Representatives in the Sixth District of Georgia, and in 1998 he won the democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, challenging Senator Paul Coverdell. If you love quotes, you’re going to love this episode! Harry Maziar, a seasoned sales expert, shares with us how he built up empires not only using sales strategies, but also an awful lot of straight forward common sense. But this is not just another episode on how to sell. Tune in for an episode peppered with genius quotes, some humorous, some discerning and some that will stick with you as you go about your day.   My Guest: Harry Maziar Harry Maziar (pronounced like “Frasier”) is an author and philanthropist whose career has combined family, business, and community. He served as President of Zep Manufacturing Company, a division of National Service Industries, for 27 years. During his tenure, Zep became an international leader in the specialty chemical industry. As a sales representative, Maziar was so successful he was named the company's first director of sales and he led 2,000 salespeople who produced double-digit growth for 25 straight years.   Maziar retired as Chairman of the Chemical Division of National Service, then a publicly traded NYSE company. Maziar jokes that he has failed retirement as he has busied himself with both for-profit and non-profit endeavors. He serves on various business and community boards, and has been active in a variety of philanthropic and social programs, including Junior Achievement of Atlanta, the Atlanta Humane Society, United Way of Metro Atlanta, and Kennesaw State University, where he continues to serve as the first Executive in Residence of the Coles College of Business.   One of his proudest achievements in retirement has been completion of his book Story Selling: Sage Advice and Common Sense About Sales and Success. A passion project aligned with Harry's mission of inspiring and empowering anyone to pursue their purpose in life (and succeed while doing it). Articles by and about Maziar have appeared in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, and he has been featured on Delta Air Lines' “Flight Talk.” Maziar earned a BBA degree from Georgia State University. Above all, Mr. Maziar and his wife, Sherry, treasure their family. Their three children and eight grandchildren have brought them unparalleled blessings and joy.   Episode Highlights:   [7:59] Sales people are not born. You don’t pick up birth announcements and see “Born today a salesperson”   [11:49] Estie: Where do you draw the line between persistent and harassment? Harry: Oh, it’s a very good question. And again, there’s not a hard and fast rule. You have to listen. If you sense that the prospect or the customer is impatient is saying that’s enough, whether he says it directly or not, then you know, it’s time to fold your book and say, “Look, I’ll be back in 30 days, I want to bring this to your attention. In the meantime, we’ll leave you this little brochure, or you’ll send a follow-up note or email. Let them know it’s not over, it just wasn’t now.   [18:33] Each letter ended with a little box at the end with a Harry’s hint, tagline. And in it was a little adage a little saying, some I would make up, some I stole off of church bulletin boards. Little catchy phrases, like “Selling is a trick but it isn’t trickery” or like, “The safest gamble of all is to take a chance on yourself” or “fight truth-decay”, or “When you put a limit on what you will do, you put a limit on what you can do” and “the only thing to try when all else fails, is try again”   [30:13]: You need to make sure you communicate with them. Morning, noon, and night, whether it be emails, whether it be letters, whether it be Twitter, I don’t care what you’ve got to stay in front of your reps. You’ve got to be accessible. So many people build barriers that shouldn’t be built.   [33:01] Estie: What should someone...

Kennesaw, Ga. (Nov. 11, 2009) — A fly-in by an Army Blackhawk helicopter and the blessing of the flags highlighted Veterans Day ceremonies at Kennesaw State University. The event was sponsored by the KSU ROTC Club, the KSU Students in Free Enterprise Team and the KSU Veterans Club. “We invited all area veterans to join us to celebrate the Army’s Year of the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) and honor them for their dedication to training and leading soldiers beneath their rank,” said faculty adviser Gary B. Roberts, professor of management and entrepreneurship in the Coles College of Business and an Army veteran of Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm. In keeping with the NCO theme, Sgt. Maj. Meinrad Kuettel of the 78th Aviation Troop Command of the Georgia Army National Guard gave the keynote speech, after which all veterans were invited to the stage for recognition of their service. Finally, Rev. Keith B. Whitmore, assistant bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta and a former Army chaplain, performed the blessing of the flags ceremony for those who brought an American flag. After the ceremony, guests were invited to get a closer look at the helicopter and a Humvee displayed on the Campus Green and talk with the soldiers who operate them. “As has become a tradition, the ceremony honored former Georgia Tech Army ROTC cadet, 1st Lt. Tyler Hall Brown, who was killed in Iraq in 2004, and all members of our armed forces who gave their lives in defense of our freedom and/or served honorably,” Roberts said.
