Representation matters. Tune in to hear Bernard Rahming, the Milwaukee Program Director of the Literacy Lab's Leading Men Fellowship, share his passion for bridging the education opportunity gap and diversifying the teaching workforce. The Leading Men Fellowship is a transformative organization supports young men of color who have recently graduated from high school as they participate in a year-long, residency-style experience providing literacy support to pre-kindergarten students. During their experience, the young men have access to robust coaching and professional development opportunities that equip them with the skills needed to transform the lives of students – and their own. Don't miss this episode! You can find out how to support the fellowship and the young men creating successful pathways to diversify the teaching workforce.Episode Highlights04:08 - Our first challenge is really finding young men that are wanting to do something, wanting to give back or wanting to serve, and then showing them this is a way they can serve. We kind of have to address that harm first of all, but to show them that they have a role that they can actually play in being that person that they wish they had. They can be that young teacher that they wish they might have had when they were in elementary school. 05:30 - Sometimes we're surprised by the young man that that turns out to be like, "I found my passion and my calling through teaching." But I think really, the first thing is commitment. 08:32 - That's a SEEDS approach. It's an acronym that stands for how to be sensitive, how to encourage, how to educate, how to develop skills, and ultimately, how do you develop a self-image within a young person. SEEDS is so great that we actually kind of very softly or maybe secretly use it with the young men themselves.Connect with Becky Dubin JenkinsLinkedInConnect with Bernard Rahming LinkedInThe Literacy LabThe Leading Men FellowshipGuest Bio:Bernard Rahming, IIMilwaukee Program Director, the Literacy Lab's Leading Men FellowshipBernard Rahming is the Program Director for the Literacy Lab's Leading Men Fellowship Program in Milwaukee. Portland, Oregon- Cody Sullivan is the first known college student with down syndrome to complete four years of higher education in Oregon. He graduated this year with a Certificate of Acheivment in the College of Education and he already has a job as a Kindergarten Teacher's Assistant at Kairos PDX! More at KXL.com He walked Saturday morning in Concordia University-Portland’s 10 a.m. Spring Commencement, celebrating at his graduation party around 3 p.m with over one hundred guests in attendence. Of 265 colleges in the U.S. only 76 offer a modified or accommodating degree for those with learning disabilities. Cody was highly involved in his student life.  He particpated in sports such as wrestling and baseball, he took Math, Crisis Management, and Children's Literature.  He even performed in Handel's Messiah during his Freshman and Sophomore years, something he says was one of the biggest challenges he faced at the University.  He also has many friends, of which he is sad as some go their seperate ways after Graduation. Working with Think College Oregon, Sullivan intends to be an advocate for those that have been perceived as disadvantaged. College Graduate, Cody Sullivan, visits the KXL studios in Portland He works with many organizations including but not limited to Northwest Disability Support and a program called Bike First where he assists others in learning how to ride a bike.  Specialized bikes are brought from California with the goal of the week long course, to get those with disabilities, and those without, riding a normal two wheeled bike by themselves. His very proud Mother, Ann Donaca-Sullivan, says BOTH Cody AND his classmates have benefitted from a lifetime of inclusive schooling, when in many instances people just like Cody are kept away from normal instruction or activities with the rest of the kids. Now that he’s made history as the first person with down syndrome to finish four years of college in Oregon, he has that new dream gig working with children at Kairos PDX Charter School. And, he will continue working with Think College Oregon removing barriers for those once thought unable to attend a 4 year University. #StayConnected as heard on Portland’s Morning News with Steve and Rebecca from 5am-9am on FM News 101 and at KXL.com
