In this episode, we discuss chapter 1 of https://www.amazon.com/Coaching-Matters-Joellen-Killion/dp/1936630052 (Coaching Matters) by Joellen Killion, Cindy Harrison, Chris Bryan, and Heather Cliftton. Some of the key points discussed in the conversation: Establishing a base with the staff members to support what is being taught in the curriculum. How do you make coaching a part of the teacher's routine?Coaching cycle, not so much coaching a tool or concept in isolation but bringing the teacher through a unit with technology weaved in throughout. Be positive with administrators on good things teachers are doing as you move forward with helping with meeting needs that they may have. Get teachers thinking about what can be done and accomplished through the tools they learn about and use of technology not just becoming proficient in specific tools. Similar to how we want our students to learn. Develop critical thinking skills. Have your vision and philosophy as a coach as you work with leadership to carry out the mission and vision of the district as you work with teachers. Get teachers thinking about what can be done and accomplished through the tools they learn about and use of technology not just becoming proficient in specific tools. Similar to how we want our students to learn. In This Episode We DiscussWhy we believe that kids today need to be taught the basics of copyright. It has become an essential element of digital literacy. Students may not realize it, but copyright and fair use are relevant to online activities they engage in virtually every day, both as consumers and creators and both at school and at home. What resources Copyright and Creativity offersA full suite of K-12 resources, including lesson plans, lesson slides, learning videos, visual aids, and a professional development course for teachers. Available for free. How Copyright and Creativity aims to make these resources engaging and effective for kidsBalance -- development process took input from all sides, avoided serving as propaganda for a particular viewpoint in ongoing debates over copyright policy. Take a positive approach, emphasizing what copyright enables and allows. Avoid teaching it as a set of negative and restrictive “thou shalt nots.” Emphasize kids' own role as creators Provide teachers with videos that walk through the trickiest parts, and with professional development, if they feel they need more background in copyright before they'd feel comfortable teaching itVery age appropriate-- shorter, wordless videos for younger students (K-4) and real world examples of copyright in action for older students. Provide practical info about the copyright-related activities kids regularly engage in: acquisition, sharing, and using someone else's creative work in some new creation of their own. What first made you aware of the importance of teacher talk? What are some common examples of how teachers end up talking in ways that don't align with their good goals for students? How can negative teacher talk affect students? What are the benefits of positive teacher talk? What steps can teachers take to improve the way they talk in the classroom? What should a teacher do if they have an idea for a book? About Mike AndersonMike Anderson has been an educator for more than 25 years. An elementary school teacher for 15 years, he has also taught preschool and university graduate level classes. He spent many years as a presenter, consultant, author, and developer for Northeast Foundation for Children, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping create safe, joyful, and challenging classrooms and schools. In 2004 Anderson received a national Milken Educator Award, and in 2005 he was a finalist for New Hampshire Teacher of the Year. Now, as an education consultant, Anderson works with schools in rural, urban, and suburban settings. He is the author of many books about great teaching and learning, including https://www.teachercast.net/product/1416627049/US/teach00-20/?cart=y (What We Say and How We Say It Matter: Teacher Talk that Improves Student Learning and Behavior) (ASCD, 2019), The Well-Balanced Teacher (ASCD, 2010) and https://www.teachercast.net/product/1416610693/US/teach00-20/?cart=y (Learning to Choose, Choosing to Learn) (ASCD, 2016). Links of InterestTwitter:http://www.twitter.com/balancedteacher ( Balancedteacher) Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/wellbalancedteacher (facebook.com/wellbalancedteacher ) About the BookWe all want our students to feel safe, collaborate well with others, feel ownership for their learning, and be joyfully engaged in their work. Nevertheless, many teachers end up using language patterns that undermine these goals. Do any of these scenarios sound familiar?
We want students to take responsibility for their learning, yet we use language that implies teacher ownership. We want to build positive relationships with students, yet we use sarcasm when we get frustrated. We want students to think learning is fun, yet we sometimes make comments that suggest the opposite. We want students to exhibit good behavior because it's the right thing to do, yet we rely on threats and bribes, which implies students don't naturally want to be good.
What teachers say to students—when they praise or discipline, give directions or ask questions, and introduce concepts or share stories—affects student learning and behavior. A slight change in intonation can also dramatically change how language feels for students. In https://www.teachercast.net/product/1416627049/US/teach00-20/?cart=y (What We Say and How We Say It Matter), Mike Anderson digs into the nuances of language in the classroom. This book's many examples will help teachers examine their language habits and intentionally improve their classroom practice so their language matches and supports their goals. In this episode of the TeacherCast Podcast, we speak with authors Matthew R Kay and Shawna Coppola about race relations in today's classrooms and how school districts, teachers, and students can sit down and have positive and constructive conversations on the topic. https://www.teachercast.net/product/1625310986/US/teach00-20/?cart=y ()In this episode, we discuss: How to recognize the difference between meaningful and inconsequential race conversations.  How to build conversational “safe spaces,” not merely declare them.  How to infuse race conversations with urgency and purpose.  How to thrive in the face of unexpected challenges.  How administrators might equip teachers to thoughtfully engage in these conversations. In this episode of the TeacherCast Podcast, we discuss Augmented Reality with Metaverse CEO, Dmitry Shapiro. Together, we explore how Augmented Reality is being used in and out of the classrooms and learn where this amazing technology will be taking us as we head into the future. Follow our PodcastThe TeacherCast Educational Broadcasting Network | http://www.twitter.com/teachercast (@TeacherCast) Follow our HostJeff Bradbury | http://www.twitter.com/jeffbradbury (@JeffBradbury) About our GuestDmitry Shapiro is CEO and Co-Founder of GoMeta (Metaverse), an augmented reality platform. Before Metaverse, Dmitry founded three companies (in network security, online video, social networking), raised $100 million in venture capital, tried to bring MySpace back from the dead (as CTO of music), and spent four years at Google working on a social graph, content discovery, and identity. The Metaverse AR platform makes it easy for non-techies to create augmented reality. While it has applications across many industries, K-12 teachers were the first to embrace Metaverse, and it is being used in thousands of classrooms across the world. About Metaversehttp://gometa.io/ (Metaverse) is an Augmented Reality platform that makes it easy for teachers and students to create amazing interactive experiences without having to code. Thousands of teachers are building all kinds of interactive curriculum, including educational games, stories, puzzles, challenges, scavenger hunts, and https://medium.com/@Metaverseapp/you-can-create-magic-in-the-classroom-951d068f365c (more). The most popular thing teachers are building are Breakout EDU-style challenges in Augmented Reality. Breakout Experiences can be built in under 15 minutes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkCXRQndkgg&t (Here's a tutorial)). Not only have teachers been building Metaverse Experiences for their students, they are having students build experiences themselves. Metaverse is great at teaching the logic behind computer programming, allowing students to build things they can see, use, and play with immediately.
