Have you ever been with someone that said they wanted to get married – yet couldn't seem to pull the plug when it came to commitment? What happens when they have a pattern of ending things as they are getting serious? We're talking to our guest Steve Budd about his continued search for "The One" and how his struggles with commitment have ended numerous serious relationships despite him wanting to get married more than anything. That gets you access to our Discourse community, where listeners share views and tips on sports science, health and training, and the chance to become part of the Sports Science conversation!Show notesIn this Spotlight, we kick off with three doping stories in Discourse Digest. Ruth Chepngetich got a three year ban, up from two, then down from four, and keeps the marathon world record nobody believes in. We discuss why her case is so frustrating for sport. Imogen Simmonds has been cleared to compete despite an Anti Doping Rule Violation, after she convinced a panel that her positive test was the result of contamination by her partner during intimate contact. And Oier Lazkano has been provisionally suspended by the UCI for athlete biological passport (ABP) abnormalities that date back to 2022. Ross explains the biological passport principles, why a suspension based on the ABP is so rare, and why it might have taken this long to bring the case against Lazkano. In Centre Stage (42:23), two papers on metabolic costs of exercise were published last week, with contradictory findings. We first explore a paper that proposes a metabolic limit of 2.5 our basal metabolic rate, and where that study fits into our understanding of exercise and metabolism. Then we consider another paper that contradicts that understanding by refuting the idea that our bodies constrain certain metabolic functions when we exercise in the equivalent of what Ross calls 'physiological austerity'. We try to explain why these studies contradict one another, the importance of energy balance in metabolism, and why there's a bit of truth in both models on opposite sides of the issue. Our Listener Lens (1:10:12) is inspired by a question from Leon, who asks about using heat as a way to increase cardiovascular stress without overloading his legs. We discuss how heat may be beneficial even without that cardiovascular benefit, why HR may not be the best metric to judge intensity against, and how the approach might be a handy hack, but only part of the approach with a few words of caution. And Finally (1:20:52), Gareth wonders whether the sub-2 hour marathon is more impressive than the sub-11 hour 100 mile record?LinksSean Ingle's article on Nike's new shoesArticle interviewing Pontzer about the constrained modelThe Pontzer study on ultra endurance athletes and the metabolic ceilingThe study that disputes Pontzer's constrained model, arguing instead for an additive effect of exerciseA discussion on X that eventually brings two authors together to discuss the contradictory findingsA comment in Nature on the debate and an attempt to find some middle ground Hosted on Acast. In a cultural pivot that's as swift as a TikTok trend, the once-unquestioned allure of heterosexual romance is under fire—recast not as a fairy-tale endpoint but as a potential social liability. Drawing from a Vogue feature, viral podcast snippets, and a probing New York Times magazine essay, we unpack the rising tide of "heterofatalism": a cocktail of exhaustion, irony, and quiet rebellion among straight women navigating the boyfriend conundrum. What was once a status symbol—think "Boyfriend Land" selfies flooding feeds in the early 2010s—has morphed into something subtly shamed, with singlehood emerging as the sleek, mysterious upgrade. Yet beneath the memes and eye-rolls lies a deeper malaise: men's relational anxieties are clashing with women's sharpened expectations, turning desire into a high-stakes standoff. The conversation ignites in British Vogue's "Is Having a Boyfriend Embarrassing Now?", where author Stephanie Yeboah dissects the subtle sabotage of coupledom in the social media era. Gone are the days of overt "hard-launches"—those gushy couple photos that scream commitment. Instead, women opt for cryptic signals: a manicured hand draped over a steering wheel, a partner's face artfully blurred in the background, or entire fiancés cropped out of vacation reels to dodge the "evil eye" of jinxing fate. Yeboah cites cultural critic Zoé Samudzi's sharp take: straight women crave "the prize and celebration of partnership" but recoil from its "norminess," lest it paint them as basic or overly invested.

The story of a young man who dressed as an SS officer for Halloween, and was assaulted, is the pulse of our society. In a time where a man can dress as a psychopath or murderer, a woman as a degenerate whore, an historical costume of fine detail is rejected with violence by mobs of hysterical, brain dead drones. Worse still, the man was charged with assault despite the woman he supposedly assaulted assaulting him on camera - itself part of another issue that involves double standards for men and women in society. It shows the acceptability of violence if it is considered justified and the violence against men if the same is considered justified. Hindu and Buddhist swastikas, or the Manji, are treated in like manner by ignorance. Otherwise, it's perfectly acceptable to wave flags with a hammer and sickle that represent an ideology that not only killed hundreds of millions of people in the 20th century alone, but that is making a resurgence today with terrifying numbers of people demanding its implementation. Furthermore, these things have been blamed somehow on Islam when its founders were actually close to being exclusively Jewish. Similar reactions of screaming and curses can be found on the religious right when confronted by witch costumes. What is happening here if not the reactions of cult adherents? Underlying these topics is the lack of definition about many of things we accept or condemn by reflex action. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. SHIPPING has a serious efficiency problem. There is the obvious uncertainty and chaos within the International Maritime Organization-led decarbonisation plans. But this is not just a carbon efficiency problem — the current direction of geopolitical drivers generally are making shipping, and global trade, significantly less efficient. US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping's latest tit-for-tat trade showdown is just the latest in a long list of frictional forces making seaborne trade more costly, more complicated and less efficient.

We compare ourselves both to other people, and to the “inner possibilities” of the life we're meant to live. In this episode we draw wisdom from Carl Jung and Theodore Roosevelt, and discuss social media, identity, AI, and Cain and Able. "The world is full of people suffering from the effects of their own unlived life. They become bitter, critical, or rigid, not because the world is cruel to them, but because they have betrayed their own inner possibilities. The artist who never makes art becomes cynical about those who do. The lover who never risks loving mocks romance. The thinker who never commits to a philosophy sneers at belief itself. And yet, all of them suffer, because deep down they know: the life they mock is the life they were meant to live.” — Carl Jung “I wish to preach, not the doctrine of ignoble ease, but the doctrine of the strenuous life, the life of toil and effort, of labor and strife; that highest form of success which comes, not to the man who desires mere easy peace, but to the man who does not shrink from danger, from hardship, or from bitter toil.” — Theodore Roosevelt, 1899 Find us here: x.com/mattmccloskey x.com/michaelvaclav All Matt's Links - https://solo.to/mattmccloskey All Michael's Links - https://solo.to/michaelvaclav Sovereign Goods - www.etsy.com/shop/SovereignThreadGoods Cafe Medici - mediciroasting.com/?srsltid=AfmBOo…9eDe2OliQmjTc2A

Hey friends! It's been a minute! In this episode, we're diving into two topics that have been on my mind lately: the 10,000-step myth and the fascinating science of super agers (because I really don't want to become a grumpy, little old lady who's “set in her ways”).First, I'm unpacking where that 10,000-step rule actually came from (hint: it started as marketing, not medicine) and what the research really says about how many steps you actually need to boost your health. Spoiler: it's a lot less than you think. For busy moms trying to balance fitness, family, and real life, this episode might just set you free from chasing numbers that don't really matter. Then we're switching gears into my latest google rabbit-hole, “super agers,” and what researchers are discovering about their lifestyles so that we can keep our brains sharp and resilient. I also share a few ways I'm weaving these habits into my own life to serve as a bit of inspiration. This one's short, encouraging, and full of practical takeaways for staying strong in body, mind, and spirit - no matter your season of life.Grab your coffee; reheat it if you need to (I always do lol
