Horror Weekly Issue #330 It's another “oldies” week here. We're starting off with the really dated “I Was a Teenage Frankenstein” from 1957. A year later, we'll visit the cemetery in “I Bury the Living.” A few years later, we've got undead problems with “Count Yorga, Vampire” and “Dracula and Son,” both from the 70s. Last, we'll look at “Final Destination 2” from 2003.   News: We were voted into the Feedspot Top 100 Horror Podcasts: https://podcast.feedspot.com/horror_podcasts/ The latest issue of “Horror Monthly” is now on sale! Devin & James are back in the Den, and it's full of bats! In this episode, we are covering a very specific type of vampire... OFF-BRAND DRACULAS! These vampires may have castles in Transylvania, look hot in a cape, or have an unnatural interest in foreign real estate, but they all owe their cinematic existence to the literary existence of Bram Stoker's Dracula. We start with NOSFERATU, covering Murnau's 1922 silent classic, through Herzog in 1979, and to Eggers in 2024. We then move on to a couple of Bela Lugosi films, where he plays a bloodsucker who is "definitely NOT Dracula" (legally speaking) with 1935's MARK OF THE VAMPIRE and 1943's THE RETURN OF THE VAMPIRE. We then head to AIP in the groovy 70's, when they redefined the old legend with 1970's COUNT YORGA, VAMPIRE, featuring the underrated Robert Quarry as the titular count with a mouthful of fangs, as well as 1972's BLACULA, featuring a dignified performance by William Marshall that deserves much more credit than it's punny title suggests.

The Vampire Doll (1970), Lake of Dracula (1971), and Evil of Dracula (1974). In the annals of Japanese horror cinema, this vampire trilogy from director Michio Yamamoto seems to be close to escaping into obscurity. In fact, try finding much more than a passing mention of these films in any reference books. But thanks to Arrow Video, all three of these films are at least saved from fading away in the sunlight like any good vampire, in one fantastic box set! Because these seemed to be on the outskirts of the vampire genre, we thought it would be a great opportunity for us to take a closer look at them, and to see if they need more attention. Listen and find out! Films mentioned in this episode: Blacula (1972), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), Count Yorga, Vampire (1970), Dracula 72 AD (1972), El Topo (1970), Evil of Dracula (1974), Frankenstein (1931), Frankenstein vs Baragon (1965), Horror of Dracula (1957), Ju-On (2002), King Kong vs Godzilla (1963), Lake of Dracula (1971), Lust for a Vampire (1971), Ring (1998), Seeding of a Ghost (1983), Son of Frankenstein (1939), Throne of Blood (1957), The Vampire Doll (1970), Vampyros Lesbos (1971)

From Blacksploitation films like Blacula and Sugar Hill where the vampire and zombie were used to talk to new generation, to Count Yorga who showed us a terrifying glimpse into a Manson like monster, and to the small screen with The Nightstalker...the classic creatures were brought back to (un)life in modern times and spoke to modern problems. This panel will cover the way pop culture turned gothic for inspiration and how these modern classics influence today's creators. Featuring Jessica Dwyer, Joe R. Lansdale, Derek M. Bill MarxWilliam Woollcott Marx (born January 8, 1937) is an American pianist, arranger, and composer. He is the adopted son of actors Harpo Marx and Susan Fleming.Marx was placed in the Children's Home Society in Los Angeles by his birth parents when he was eight months old, and four months later he was adopted by Harpo Marx and his wife, Susan Fleming. He attended the Juilliard School, where he studied composition and he studied with composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He began working in entertainment when he was 12 years old, when he was put in charge of his father's props for shows, including his harp. At 16 he became arranger and musical conductor for his father. Marx's compositions include concertos for alto saxophone, flute, harp, piano, and violin.] He also composed symphonies and scores for films, including the score for the film Weekend Pass (1984). Marx transcribed music that his father composed, because the elder Marx did not read music. The two worked together on two albums that Harpo recorded in the early 1960s. He also composed and arranged for recording artists in both jazz and popular music. In 1961, Marx signed with Vee-Jay Records. His projects there included arranging cover versions of music for four albums by the Castaway Strings. In 1967, he began writing music for commercials. In the 1970s, he composed for several low-budget horror movies, including Scream Blacula Scream, Terror at Red Wolf Inn, and Count Yorga, Vampire. For these projects, he often collaborated with lyricist Marilyn Lovell. He continued his work on films outside the horror genre throughout the 1980s, such as arranging music for John Cassavetes' Big Trouble . As a performer, Marx has played in jazz clubs, lounges, and theaters In the late 1980s, Marx and harpist Carrol McLaughlin toured the United States, giving performances and promoting Harpo Speaks, his father's autobiography. In the early 1990s, Los Angeles magazine named Marx the most popular lounge pianist in that city. In 2002, he received a star at 265 S. Palm Canyon Drive on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.                                                           (Adapted from wikipedia). This week we have a look at the 1972 film Deathmaster directed by Ray Danton. This is Episode #396! Deathmaster is a strange creature, a sort of sequel to Count Yorga and Return of Count Yorga starring the star of those films, except this time Robert Quarry plays Khorda, who appears in Southern California as a cult-leader guru to a bunch of local young people.

There is definitely nothing even close to a theme in the twenty films we're talking about this episode but there's some pleasant surprises, we still wonder who actually likes Count Yorga and there is one moment of pure hatred.Things are kicked off right with a DIE HARD clone that's pretty rad, we look at Steve McQueen's final film, Damien Chazelle brings the Hollywood excess in BABYLON, there's some giant animals on the loose, a Nazi zombie causes havoc, we look at how mental health was handled in the 1940's, another 70's TV movie doesn't live up to expectations, Maxwell Smart gets "nude" and so much more! Thanks for listening!     Next stop 1971 with three groovy horrors from the groovy minds at AIP and one of Franco's best know exploitations.     A couple in Turkey stop in at their neighborhood sex cabaret and watch a vampire devour her dance partner. Unfortunately for everyone, this evening of entertainment puts Linda right in the sights of Countess Carody. The vampire doesn't just want a light snack but to own our blonde heroine body and soul. Will Linda escape the vampire's clutches or will she find nothing but death and madness in the embrace of Vampyros Lesbos?     Donna and her swinging friends have a party to contact her recently deceased mother. The gathering is lead by her mother's boyfriend, a mysterious and dashing Bulgarian noble who just a few months ago moved into the not at all scary old mansion outside of town. Before they know it the whole group is in peril as one of the female members vanishes and her boyfriend turns up dead. Can these meddling middle age kids stop the bloodshed or will they all fall victim to Count Yorga, Vampire?     A stake can't keep a bad vampire down. Count Yorga and his brides rise from their graves to find they now live next door to an orphanage. Taking a shine to a teacher, Cynthia, the Count begins a diabolical plan to make her one of his brides. This time our middle age kids go to the police for help but it all maybe too late and The Return of Count Yorga will deliver him triumphant?     The brilliant musician and theologian, Dr. Aton Phibes, was thought to have died in a car accident four years ago after hearing about the death of his wife on an operating table. Now someone is taking revenge against the medical team with the Plagues of Egypt. Did Phibes survive? Who is the beautiful woman reportedly seen in the vicinity of each murder? Will our intrepid detective inspector solve the case or will the plagues play out to avenge The Abominable Dr. Phibes?     All that and Dave gets hyped, Tyler keeps it mellow, and Kevin shames us all with his shame bell. Director Jeff Balsmeyer was an American film storyboard artist itching to make his writing and directing debut.  His passion project was Danny Deckchair, a romantic comedy based on the real life adventure of California dreamer Larry Walters who tied helium balloons to a lawn chair to lift off into the sky over Long Beach in 1982.  After ten years of shopping the idea around and having recently married an Aussie and relocated there, Balsmeyer made and set his film in Australia.  Brit Rhys Ifans was chosen to play Danny, Justine Clarke came on as Trudy, his frustrated girlfriend, and Miranda Otto was a natural fit for Glenda, the new woman that comes into his life.   Dan and Vicky discuss this low budget charmer from 2004.  Vicky catches us up on her participation in the post-inauguration NYC Woman's March and all her recent viewing including the films Patriots Day, Creed, Midnight Cowboy and the Count Yorga films and the TV shows Sherlock, Smash and Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events.  Dan tells us about his new off-Broadway show, Mother of Invention, and some of his recent watches including John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China and Memoirs of an Invisible Man, the recent big screen Passengers and The Bye Bye Man, the documentary Rats and TV shows Channel Zero and The Exorcist.   We also read our first listener e-mail in a long time! Soar with Hot Date 44 and Danny Deckchair on this Aussie flight of fancy.  Leave us some feedback.
