How do we get you to keep scrolling? This is the aim of the applications on your phone. The more they can steal your focus and attention the more profitable they are.So how can you take advantage of the benefits of technology whilst not letting it take advantage of you? This week we speak to Johann Hari, the author of the New York Times bestseller: Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention. Johann is an author, executive producer and Tedtalk speaker. His books have been translated into 40 languages, and been praised by a broad range of people, from Oprah to Noam Chomsky, from Elton John to Naomi Klein.Johann's first book, ‘Chasing the Scream: the First and Last Days of the War on Drugs', was adapted into the Oscar-nominated film ‘The United States Vs Billie Holiday'. Katherine Brodsky is today a freelance writer who in the early 2000's was the founder and editor-in-chief of an online culture magazine that was registering 600,000 pageviews a month while herself still an undergrad. In this episode of the Unsupervised Learning podcast, Razib explores a life lived online, from the dot-com bubble to the social media era. Brodsky, whose Substack is Random Minds, is an observer of culture from a peripatetic vantage point, a Canadian working in the American film industry, the daughter of Ukrainian immigrants watching her parents' homeland ravaged by war, and a public relations professional who moonlights as a commentator and photographer. Though an early adopter of internet technology who became a “content creator” before that was even the phrase, Brodsky over the last few years has been hitting the shoals of social media culture as her classical free speech-oriented liberalism and journalistic devotion to a bare modicum of objectivity run up against the realities of 2020's “moral clarity” where strident viewpoints are prized. Razib and Brodsky agree that Nicholas Carr's 2010 book The Shallows already has the character of a Cassandra-like prophecy, as the internet has become a tool not for mental liberation but for enslavement to impulse and the mob. Brodsky outlines her polestar when observing and commenting on the culture, which emphasizes a level of detachment or sympathy for the “other” that is sorely lacking in much of mainstream 2020's discourse.
Dr. Jim Denison believes that a surging number of Christians are softening their stance on what he calls four cultural earthquakes: the rise of a post-truth culture, sexual revolution, critical theory, and secular religion. And it is the cultural acceptance of these secular ideologies that will undoubtedly shift and seismically shape our world in the years ahead. There is growing sentiment that this is the gravest danger Christians have ever faced and ultimately will make the 1960s seem like an era of peace, love, and happiness rather than a doorway to the destruction of decency that it was. Dr. Denison joins us on The Crossmap Podcast to discuss his latest book, “The Coming Tsunami: Why Christians Are Labeled Intolerant, Irrelevant, Oppressive, and Dangerous – and How We Can Turn the Tide”. Listen as Dr. Denison urges Christians to not run away from these tidal waves but defend the truth of God's Word that will undoubtedly have a positive effect on the generations to come.

Arnab is a huge fan of Bollywood movies, the game of cricket, and is a keen observer of cultural mores, especially among Indians and the Indian diaspora. Arnab is not afraid to speak (or write) his mind, and he does it with a dose of humor, sarcasm, and literary flourish.*Bong is a person from the state of West Bengal in India or is from Bangladesh and speaks the Bengali language. “Bong” also encompasses a personality style, and a particular type of philosophy. I always learn so much when I read or talk to him. Today Tim and I talked about his latest writing Get all of his books Tim Wise, whom scholar and philosopher Cornel West calls, “A vanilla brother in the tradition of (abolitionist) John Brown,” is among the nation's most prominent antiracist essayists and educators. He has spent the past 25 years speaking to audiences in all 50 states, on over 1000 college and high school campuses, at hundreds of professional and academic conferences, and to community groups across the nation. He has also lectured internationally in Canada and Bermuda, and has trained corporate, government, law enforcement and medical industry professionals on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions. Wise's antiracism work traces back to his days as a college activist in the 1980s, fighting for divestment from (and economic sanctions against) apartheid South Africa. After graduation, he threw himself into social justice efforts full-time, as a Youth Coordinator and Associate Director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism: the largest of the many groups organized in the early 1990s to defeat the political candidacies of white supremacist and former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. From there, he became a community organizer in New Orleans' public housing, and a policy analyst for a children's advocacy group focused on combatting poverty and economic inequity. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Smith College School of Social Work, in Northampton, MA., and from 1999-2003 was an advisor to the Fisk University Race Relations Institute in Nashville, TN. Wise is the author of seven books, including his highly-acclaimed memoir, White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son, as well as Dear White America: Letter to a New Minority, and Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America. His forthcoming book, White LIES Matter: Race, Crime and the Politics of Fear in America, will be released in 2018. His essays have appeared on Alternet, Salon, Huffington Post, Counterpunch, Black Commentator, BK Nation, Z Magazine and The Root, which recently named Wise one of the “8 Wokest White People We Know.” Wise has been featured in several documentaries, including “The Great White Hoax: Donald Trump and the Politics of Race and Class in America,” and “White Like Me: Race, Racism and White Privilege in America,” both from the Media Education Foundation. He also appeared alongside legendary scholar and activist, Angela Davis, in the 2011 documentary, “Vocabulary of Change.” In this public dialogue between the two activists, Davis and Wise discussed the connections between issues of race, class, gender, sexuality and militarism, as well as inter-generational movement building and the prospects for social change. Wise is also one of five persons—including President Barack Obama—interviewed for a video exhibition on race relations in America, featured at the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC. Additionally, his media presence includes dozens of appearances on CNN, MSNBC and NPR, feature interviews on ABC's 20/20 and CBS's 48 Hours, as well as videos posted on YouTube, Facebook and other social media platforms that have received over 20 million views. His podcast, “Speak Out with Tim Wise,” launched this fall and features weekly interviews with activists, scholars and artists about movement building and strategies for social change. Wise graduated from Tulane University in 1990 and received antiracism training from the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond, in New Orleans. 53:00 Christian Finnegan is an American stand-up comedian, writer and actor based in New York City. On this episode of Fault Lines, hosts Jamarl Thomas and Shane Stranahan talked about the news of the day as well as topics including modern monetary theory, the Democratic National Convention, and Roger Stone.GUESTSSteve Grumbine - Political, Economic and Social Justice Activist, Founder of Real Progressives and Real Progress in Action | Biden and Betrayal Demitrius Minor - Minister, Political and Cultural Commentator, Author | A Pastor on Politics & Protests Randy Credico- Political Satirist, Civil Rights Activist, Prankster | Randy Rips RogerIn Jamarl's first hour monologue, he criticized Biden for using his deceased son to garner support for a healthcare plan that is not Medicare For All. He said the Democrats are moving right, betraying the real left. Then Shane and Jamarl talked to modern monetary theory expert Steve Grumbine, who began by saying that he thinks alternative currencies such as bitcoin are less currencies and more commodities. Then the conversation turned to how the Democrats are managing Joe Biden in 2020, and Steve agreed with Jamarl that not running on a strong Medicare For All policy platform is unsatisfactory and said that as a voter, not just a policy person, he finds the notion that the Democrats are the only alternative for progressives to be offensive. Then they discussed modern monetary theory and Steve said that a lot of people have misconceptions about the way money works in his opinion and that when the government approves a spending policy, it prints the money to cover that spending, which creates value in the marketplace. In the second hour, they were joined by Demetrius Minor, who said that even as someone who is broadly on the right, he found the Democratic National Convention more compelling than the Republicans', saying that he did not think the conventions would really move the needle either way for anybody but the hard-core political junkie. He expanded on that to say that he found Donald Trump's speech to be too long. Demetrius said that as a minister, he thinks neither side of the political aisle is doing a good job bringing the country together about the nationwide protests, and he feels that both Donald Trump and Joe Biden are incapable of taking the biblical advice to be quick to listen and slow to speak. In the third hour, the hosts were joined by Randy Credico. Jamarl said he didn't like the way that previous guests had been. Randy said he was lied about and he felt like a fall guy. Randy said Roger Stone's accusation that he had impersonated Roger was false and said that Stone had no connection to Wikileaks and that Randy considers Stone to be a showboater. He also said that filmmaker David Lugo slandered him. Randy discussed the history of his relationship with Roger Stone, and he said Stone supported Randy when he ran as a Libertarian candidate for Senate and said that they got along for the most part personally. Randy also discussed the Black Lives Matter protests and Randy said people have had enough.

Why? Across the world, scientists have uncovered evidence for nine different causes. Some are in our biology – but most are in the way we are living today. This New York Times best-selling book – lauded by everyone from Oprah to Elton John – offers a radical new way of thinking about this crisis. It shows that once we understand the real causes, we can turn to pioneering new solutions – ones that offer real hope. The book criticises some doctors who just dose people without going deeper and asking the bigger questions. The idea of just giving people antidepressants without asking why they could depressed, sad or upset. He argues that the spectrum of depression or sadness is just part of the human condition. It is not always something requiring medication. At what point does sadness becomes depression or something that’s not normal? There are various checklists that have been developed by health professionals, that get tweaked over the years. It seems the trend is diagnosing more people with depression and therefore putting them onto pills. There are links and examples throughout the book about the drug companies and the efficacy of drugs. In particular the side effects versus the real effects. How much of the effects are based on science versus the marketing of the drug company? The underlying myth that surrounds this is the serotonin myth. This idea that depression is purely a biological issue caused by low serotonin is pretty shaky from a scientific perspective. Whilst the author is criticizing doctors willingly giving out anti-depressants without asking deeper questions, it really leads to a bigger question of how the services are delivered. How they are funded and the lack of time doctors have to spend with the patients. BIG IDEA 2 (7:53) – The power of disconnection. In the book Johann Hari argues that there are nine real reasons for depression. These are disconnection from meaningful work, disconnection from people, disconnection from meaningful values, disconnection from childhood trauma, disconnection from status and respect, disconnection from the natural world and disconnection from a hopeful and secure future. The last two areas are the real role of genes and brain. In these seven areas of disconnection, you can see yourself and the people around you in the stories told in the book. For example with disconnection from meaningful work, this a challenge when people do not having secure meaningful work. Underemployment is another example like those students graduating with degrees and with debts but without enough roles for them to go into. WIth these examples you can see how society is perpetuating this problem of not having meaningful work. There was a quote in the book that says when work is enriching, life is fuller which flows through to the things you do outside of work. However, if work really sucks your soul, you go home and even though you didn’t really use your brain, you feel exhausted. This is because you’re understimulated all day. This then leads to disconnection from others (you don’t feel like seeing people) and even disconnection from a hopeful and secure future which can be incredibly depressing. There was a part in the book where it says people who had good support network, may include friends or a partner, are considerably less likely to become depressed even when faced with a very difficult life situation. BIG IDEA 3 (12:40) – The joy of reconnection. This is the opposite of big idea number two. There are examples in the book where people have applied small things to reconnect to the seven areas of disconnection. This has a compound effect, the opposite to the vicious cycle of disconnection. It’s how you pull yourself into meaningful work like reconnecting with people, getting into nature (something actually prescribed by doctors in some countries), dealing with childhood trauma or being more selfless. Some people even offer this as a service to help people get back to nature or help people reconnect with themselves and being part of humanity and the natural world. Johann Hari suffered from depression since he was a child and took anti-depressants as a teenager because he was told that depression is the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain. He went on a quest to see if this is really the case. In his book, Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real Causes of Depression—and the Unexpected Solutions, he discusses that journey. He interviewed many social scientists who are uncovering evidence that depression and anxiety are largely caused by key problems with the way we live today not brain chemistry. Johann Hari is a New York Times best-selling author. His book, Chasing the Scream: the First and Last Days of the War on Drugs, has been translated into 15 languages and is currently being adapted into a major Hollywood film, and into a non-fiction documentary series. He is one of the most-viewed TED talkers of all time: his talk, ‘Everything You Think You Know About Addiction is Wrong’, has (along with the animation based on it) been viewed more than 20 million times. He has written over the past seven years for some of the world’s leading newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Guardian, the Spectator, Le Monde Diplomatique, the Melbourne Age, and Politico. He has also appeared on leading TV shows, including HBO’s Realtime With Bill Maher. He was twice named ‘National Newspaper Journalist of the Year’ by Amnesty International. He has also been named ‘Cultural Commentator of the Year’ and ‘Environmental Commentator of the Year’ at the Comment Awards.
This week, we interview journalist and author Johann Hari. Johann is one of our foremost social science thinkers and writers. In addition to writing regularly for the New York Times and Independent newspapers, he has written extensively on social science and human rights issues. His 2015 book Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs, challenges what we believe about addiction and his TED talk on our response to addiction has been viewed over 20 million times. Johann was twice named ‘National Newspaper Journalist of the Year’ by Amnesty International. And he has been named ‘Cultural Commentator of the Year’ and ‘Environmental Commentator of the Year’ at the Comment Awards. In this interview, we talk about Johann’s latest book, Lost Connections: Uncovering the Real causes of Depression and the Unexpected Solutions, which has been called a ‘game changer’ and received plaudits for its explanation of the social and cultural issues leading to depression and anxiety. In the episode we discuss: How Johann became interested in journalism and began writing about social justice and human rights issues. What led to wanting to write a book that was partly based on his own experiences with depression and anxiety, but also that provided the evidence for social and cultural issues that may underlie the dramatic increase in the number of people needing support for emotional distress. The facts behind the chemical imbalance theory of mental illness. The role of the bio-psycho-social model of mental distress and why we may have focussed predominantly on biological interventions. Social prescribing as a means to enable connection between people who struggle with depression and anxiety. The Hamilton Depression scale and how it shows us that the effect of antidepressant drugs is small when compared to the improvements that can be achieved without drug therapy. How Johann would like to widen the definition of what may be considered an ‘antidepressant’. How disempowerment often lies at the heart of poor health. How stigma relates to our perceptions of an individual who is labelled mentally ill and how it changes if we think someone has a biological problem. Johann’s experiences in the Berlin district of Kotti.
