Half of all graduates don't work in jobs that require a bachelor's degree. What can institutions do to best prepare their students for work? More than half of bachelor's degree holders are underemployed a year after graduation, and roughly four in 10 are still underemployed a full decade later. How worried should we be about those rates, and what can colleges and universities do to decrease them? That question was at the heart of “Talent Disrupted,” a recent report from Strada Education Foundation and the Burning Glass Institute, which adds important nuance to the larger discussion about post-college outcomes for graduates. In this episode, we dig into the report with two experts. Carlo Salerno is a managing director at the Burning Glass Institute and an author of the aforementioned report. Gary Daynes is founder and principal of Back Porch Consulting and a former professor and senior administrator at several private nonprofit colleges. They discuss what underemployment means and how serious a problem it is, the conditions that contribute to it, and what colleges and universities can do to shield their graduates from it. On this episode of the Lessons Learned for Vets podcast, we welcome back Dr. Derek Moore. Derek was originally a guest in Season 1 for a Q&A episode. Since retiring in 2021 from the US Marine Corps, Derek's journey has had highs and lows, including a period of unemployment and underemployment. Today, Derek is the Director of the Joint Military Leadership Center at the University of South Florida. One of Derek's challenges during his military transition was relocating from North Carolina to Florida. Derek chose Florida for its climate but was unprepared for the lack of opportunities in his desired field. After experiencing unemployment for 8 months and unable to find leadership roles working with student veterans at area colleges and universities, Derek settled on a position in admissions and recruiting for a local private university. Within 3 months, Derek knew his job was not a good fit for him. It took him almost a year to find his current role. When Derek was unemployed and underemployed, he made an intentional effort to stay in touch with his connections on LinkedIn. He encourages others facing the same reality to remain calm and patient. Consider expanding your job search range to increase the number of job opportunities. In his director role, Derek oversees the ROTC program that includes Navy, Marine Corps, Army and Air Force. He serves as the conduit between the university and the military branches, ensuring that students are successful with both their military and university commitments. Derek uses his military leadership skills and experience in his current role to serve students. Underemployment is one of the biggest issues that veterans face in their post military career. Whether a person is underutilized, undervalued or underpaid, underemployment can be discouraging and frustrating. Keep looking for opportunities that make you feel valued and useful. Sometimes the first job a veteran is offered after leaving the military is a dream job. Other times, that first job is nothing more than a paycheck. There is nothing wrong with accepting a job and continuing to look for a better fit. For Derek, he took his first job without having done the work of translating his military skills on his resume. After seeking professional help on his resume to help him translate his skills, he noticed more employers reaching out to him. If you choose to write your own resume, you must convey the value of what you did in the military to the employer. Derek credits LinkedIn for his large network. Once he got over the initial discomfort of reaching out to strangers to ask for informational interviews, Derek learned how to lean into his network to learn more about careers in higher education. In addition, he created content and commented on posts to share his knowledge and skills. Derek encourages service members to make their education plan while they are still serving. People who are underemployed often earn less than they would in a job that better matches their skills and experience, and may not have access to the same benefits or opportunities for advancement. This can lead to financial strain and make it difficult for individuals to provide for themselves and their families. They may struggle to pay bills or make ends meet, which can cause stress and negatively impact their mental and physical health. Underemployment also has a broader impact on society as a whole. When people are not able to use their skills and talents to their full potential, it can lead to a decrease in productivity and economic growth. In addition, individuals who are underemployed may not be able to contribute to their communities in the same way as those who are fully employed. NAB late to the property party – bumps up property forecast for 2021In its quarterly report, NAB has recently adjusted its property forecast for national price growth to now hit 19% in 2021. This is bumped up from its prediction 3 months ago of 14%, (and 6 months ago of 8%). Just goes to show, that if you're not a specialist in the market, you tend to lag behind the data and we're seeing that consistently across banks and investment firm economists. And of course, being bold is not how many economists like to express themselves.2. Labor reveals plans for property in the run up to the next electionA collective sigh of relief was audible all over the nation, after Labor announced that it would not be pursuing changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax. This is an encouraging result, as we are currently facing a housing crisis in our country, and the most vulnerable are experiencing challenges in the rental market. It may come as a surprise, but more than 90% of property investment only own one or two properties. Signalling that it is mum and dad investors that make up the majority of these investors, and while some could say that they are and simply looking to better their retirement, the reality is that they are providing shelter to a significant percentage of our nation's population, and unlike many other nations, Australia doesn't have a social housing policy that provisions for shelter for the majority of renters.How our ageing population drives Australian property markets1. Ikigai and retirement planning, what is your reason for being?The trio discuss the importance of retirement planning, which for our younger generations, may seem too far into the future to imagine. However, the proliferation of the FIRE movement (financial independence, retire early), has started to permeate and evolve traditional thinking around retirement ages. There are other options that investors can take to retire early, but this takes planning and sacrifice to make happen. Of course, a big part of retirement planning is ensuring that you have a reason for being (or getting out of bed each day), which the Japanese call ‘Ikigai'. So much of our identity can be connected to what we do for work, and it is important in retirement planning to ensure that you have the ability to fund your interests once work slows down or stops.2. Explaining our population pyramidOver time, the percentage of our ageing population has increased. In 1927 our population aged 65 and over was 5%, which moved to 9% by 1977 and is now 15% as at 2017. ABS Projections expect that this will have reached 22% by 2057 and 25% by 2097.3. Global impacts of an ageing populationAustralia is not the only nation facing the challenges of an ageing population. Across the globe, Japan's economy has been stagnating for decades, due to increased costs for health and retirement funding. With it's one child policy, China was heading this way too, but have since evolved their policy to mitigate the effects. If China's economy stagnates, this could have international impacts. Thankfully, Australia has one of the best retirement funding schemes in the world, but many who are currently retiring didn't have access to Superannuation for their entire working life.4. Historical and social factors that have contributed to our increasing elderly populationThe trio discuss the key changes in our society and economy that are driving our ever-increasing elderly population. From life expectancy, waves of migration activity, women in the work force, slower birth rates and families having less children.5. Changes in the workforce in relation to our older generationsOver time, we have seen huge shifts in people working longer, whether by choice or due to older age limits on pension entitlements, enforced superannuation and less reliance on welfare, kids living at home longer, and percentages of older women in the workforce double in the last 20 years, not to mention the impact of no-fault divorce and heightened divorce numbers since the 1970's… The trio discuss how these key changes have impacted the property market.6. Underemployment is becoming a major issue for over 55'sUnderemployment tracked by the ABS include the number of people who want to work more, but are unable to. Whether due to discrimination or other factors, 6.1% of our older population are underemployed, which is a big issue for many households.7. Dropping rates of home ownershipThe trio discuss the changes in our younger demographics which contribute to falling rates of home ownership. Home ownership is no longer the major aspiration that it used to be, with many more young adults choosing to study and for longer (not to mention a great holiday or two travelling the world). This delay in earning a full time income, coupled with the choice of many to start a family and get married later in life, means that home ownership rates for our younger generation are significantly lower.8. The impact on our economic outlook as our aged population increasesDue to underemployment and divorce rates, many of our ageing population are choosing to work longer, but many will need some social support when they retire. Australia will face challenges in funding aged care homes, as less of our population will be working, which means there will be less money to fund these things. Eight out of ten people who are retirement age are ‘stayers' and will elect not to downsize, which will have impacts on the supply of property and pressure for those who rent. The trio discuss some macro economic measures which could be introduced, particularly those that encourage downsizing.9. How to retire wealthyInterestingly the split of debt for households aged above 54 exhibit a relatively even division between owner occupied debt and investment debt. The main increase in investment ownership over the last two decades has been in the 50+ age group. This is not surprising as those who are further in their life's journey would be in a better financial position, they have been working for longer and may not have children to support anymore. However, it is a good reminder to our listeners that you don't need to do everything immediately, and you don't need to own many properties to supplement your superannuation. David Aspinall advocates for people on the autism spectrum to explore the full range of their natural talents, while making sure not to clump the entire community into a stereotype. David is the CEO of Auticon US, which is a technology company focused on creating jobs for people with autism by tapping into their natural skills and abilities. As the company developed, they found a great model for those on the spectrum to overcome barriers to employment and thrive in better suited positions. Among a few common skills that seem to flourish in the technology field, David says the people who usually find their way to the initiative tend to show phenomenal attention to detail, ability to spot patterns, and launch amounts of data,  sheer cognitive strength. Auticon has an expansive view of the stakeholders they hope to help into better suited positions. David shares Auticon's open-minded outlook: “... we employ people that are really at every stage of their career, from individuals that are just starting on their technology career to mid-level tenure individuals up to 15-year kind of principal architect type roles. In our mission to employ as many people as possible, we do try to employ people that are junior, mid and senior.”David Aspinall, CEO, Auticon US Identifying the level or range of a person's capabilities can help avoid the person from being underemployed. Underemployment where the a person is fulfilling a role that is below their capacity to naturally perform. Someone could have a higher skill capacity or have a wider range of ability than a position calls for. If left in that position, the person's valuable contributions will be misplaced, and their skill level may possibly decline. David explained that people on the spectrum frequently experience underemployment, and he expressed his thoughts on addressing the concern through Auticon. David explains how Auticon approaches another close concern in proper employment: an autism friendly work environment. He delves through the process the initiative uses to screen candidates, and how the process matches with the needs of their stakeholders. Reflecting the needs of the stakeholders can be found in how the initiative families their interview, or in the coaching done with the companies hiring people on the spectrum beforehand. In this social enterprise model, Auticon is assisting companies in developing an autism friendly environment so that people in the company can see the process, and it can grow from there. The May labour market report was very strong on all accounts. Employment rose by 115k, the unemployment rate fell to 5.1% and the participation rate lifted. Underemployment fell further and suggests the labour market is tightening quickly. In this podcast Gareth Aird, Head of Australian Economics and Belinda Allen, Senior Economist discuss the labour market report and the outlook for employment. Gareth also talks about a newer measure of the labour market which includes all workers in the Australian economy, including temporary workers, which indicates employment is not yet back to pre pandemic levels.
