With everything going on in our world today, it's understandable if it's begun to feel like we're living in the end times. Given that temptation, however, it's important to remember that God's still moving in ways that resemble Acts far more than Revelation. I needed that reminder this week and found it in the story of a pastor from Thailand. What did Cambridge Dictionary choose as its “word of the year”?

The “word of the year” is an apt one for 2023 and speaks rather well to the state of our culture. In fact, Cambridge Dictionary stated that their word of the year “reminds us that humans still need to bring their critical thinking” into play. In today's Daily Article, Dr. Jim Denison argues that such critical thinking skills are unlikely to be popular in a “post-truth” culture that measures facts by feelings and moral standards by personal opinion. But Christians must apply their critical thinking and spiritual insight to today's news if we truly want to see change in the world. Jesus said, “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars.” So when terrorists strike, missiles are fired, and ground wars begin in the Middle East, it's easy to question whether the end times are coming. To add to our anxiety, the words surrounding how Christians discuss the end times are daunting: Eschatology. Premillennialism. Postmillennialism. Dispensationalism. Replacement theology. What do they mean? Do they all have the same importance? Should we care about them today? In this episode of The Denison Forum Podcast, Dr. Jim Denison and his son Dr. Ryan Denison join Dr. Mark Turman for an insightful discussion on end-times thinking as it relates to the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza. In the end—whenever the end truly may come—let's remember how Jesus completed his statement on the rumors of wars: “See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place” (Matthew 24:6). Topics (01:24): One month into the war, what's going on in Israel? (06:24): What is eschatology? And why does it matter in the Middle East right now? (09:10): Why do many American Christians hold to a dispensational view of the end times? (16:07): Is having a right eschatology a primary doctrine of Christianity? (22:55): Is Israel our key indictor of the end times coming? (26:24): Are Israelites still God's people? (31:03): Are Christians too focused on predicting the end times? The dangers of Christian nationalism Andrew L. Whitehead's accessible book American Idolatry: How Christian Nationalism Betrays the Gospel and Threatens the Church raises difficult but necessary questions about the influence of Christian nationalism in America. What is Christian nationalism? Why is it dangerous for our faith, our churches, and our country? How can Christians see through Christian nationalism as a false god that twists the good news of Jesus away from his call to “love your neighbor as yourself”? Many Christians have influence, power, and opportunity, but many of us also need to learn more holy ways to utilize power. We need to be wise and wary of the devil's call to fear and the culture's call to violence. God's call is for us to steward our salt and light well personally and in community so that all, and not just some, can flourish. In his new book, Coming to Faith through Dawkins, coauthored with Denis Alexander, McGrath compiled twelve essays from fellow scientists, an engineer, a graphic designer, a journalist, and others who were led to question their atheism by reading the work of atheist Dr. Richard Dawkins. In our conversation, McGrath explains how he and others from around the world admire much of the scientific work of Dawkins. Clearly, we need a Savior to save us from our sins. But, paradoxically, one of the sins from which we need to be saved is the sin of rejecting our need for a Savior.  Author: Jim Denison, PhD Narrator: Chris Elkins Subscribe: http://www.denisonforum.org/subscribe Click here to find Dr. Jim Denison's book, Wrestling With God, detailing the remarkable extrabiblical evidence for Jesus' claim of divinity.  Please consider a yearend gift to support Denison Forum and the Daily Article podcast.  Thank you!

More than one million Americans and Canadians were without power over the weekend as a “bomb cyclone” wreaked havoc with snow, strong winds, and freezing temperatures that affected nearly 250 million people. But Santa Claus was not one of them. However, many view Santa's “visit” on Christmas Eve with unbridled skepticism. Tragically, millions view Jesus' birth in the same way.  Author: Jim Denison, PhD Narrator: Chris Elkins Subscribe: http://www.denisonforum.org/subscribe  See Dr. Jim Denison's article “Is Jesus really God?” for a survey of the biblical evidence of Christ's divinity. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Washington, DC, yesterday on his first trip outside his homeland since it was invaded by Russia exactly three hundred days ago. He met with President Biden in the afternoon and addressed a joint session of Congress last night. Prior to his arrival, President Biden announced that he is sending nearly $2 billion in additional security assistance to Ukraine. However, Russia is not yet the clear and present danger to the United States that the old Soviet Union represented. This is good news for our country. The January 6 Committee of the US House of Representatives voted yesterday to send referrals to the Justice Department recommending that former President Donald Trump be criminally prosecuted. However, the committee's criminal referral holds no official legal weight. As often happens with political news, what you thought before you read the story likely determines what you think after you read the story. Meanwhile, many of us are focused on arctic weather that will blast much of America this week. All news is ultimately local, but here's the problem with such self-focused existentialism: what matters most to us is not always what stands before us. Maundy Thursday, Happy 2nd Anniversary, "I'm Not Ashamed of Jesus" day

Have You Not Heard?

Maundy Thursday. The day of great distress and agony for Jesus. What an amazing day to look at how the One who was stressed beyond anything we could ever imagine being stressed by, handled it. This marks the day of the display of servant hood and foretelling of what was to come, with Jesus washing the Disciples feet and His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. In the garden, He pours out His heart, to the point of sweating blood, due the realization and weightiness of what is about to come. Who else to better learn from on how to handle life's toxic stressors than the one who bore it all? (We will unpack that tomorrow:). Also this day happens to be: "I am not ashamed of Jesus" day. So let's lift Him high; share His name and fame and maybe help someone get relief from their stress. You can do that through simple acts of love and care. Start by sharing with them this Podcast or others like it that bring the hope and healing that comes through Christ.  As we share Jesus's love, let's not forget to explain the fact that He freed us from our sin that is a death sentence, through His death and resurrection. The Good News of the Gospel is that we can choose His death on the Cross as our payment. Then we have a 'get out of jail card' free from any penalty of sin and the access to be healed from the effects of sin!  Now if that doesn't relieve stress, I'm not sure what can!  Thank you faithful followers for helping "Have You Not Heard?" thrive. Through your listening, sharing, rating, reviewing and encouragement,  God is using this little Podcast to share His hope and healing to a hurting world. Let's keep on keeping on together and help His word spread.  Resources: *The Gospel according to Mark *John 13:34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another." *Dr. Jim Denison, "The Daily Article" 4-14-22 *"The Hour Had Come" by David Mathis (www.desiringgod.org) *"What is Maundy Thursday and Why do Christians Celebrate It?" (www.crosswalk.com)  Maundy Thursday Prayer: Lord God, You sent your Son into the world, And before his hour had come, He washed his disciples' feet. You had given all things into his hands. He had come from you, and was going to you, And what did he do? He knelt down on the floor, And washed his friends' feet. He was their teacher and their Lord, Yet he washed their feet. Lord God, help us learn from his example; Help us to do as he has done for us. The world will know we are his disciples If we love one another. Strengthen our hands and our wills for love And for service. Keep before our eyes the image of your Son, Who, being God, became a Servant for our sake. All glory be to him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. Amen. Jesus' Stress Management Plan 1. He was empowered by the Holy Spirit (Mark 1:9-13) 2. He knew who He was(his identity) and whose He was, as a result, knew His authority. (Mark 1:22),(Mark 1:11)(Mark 2:17), (Mark 2:10) 3. He lived in Community(Mark 3:13-19; Mark 6:7) 4. He spent time alone with God in Prayer (Mark 1:35; Mark 3:13, Mark 6:45-46, Mark 9:2) 5. He knew how to spend His energy(Mark 1:35-39) 6. He was led by the Spirit and His Father; He was not dictated by the circumstances or the expectations of people. (Mark 2:27-28)(Mark 3:1-6)(Mark 1:37-38, Mark 3:32-35)(Mark 9:14-29),(John 15:19) 7. He operated out of Faith, not fear. (Mark 10:32-34) 8. He depended on God to meet His needs and the needs of other's. (Mark 8:1-9) 9. He lived with an attitude of humility and servanthood.(Mark 10:31; Mark 10:44)(Mark 8:35; John 13:1-17) 10.He lived authentically. Poured His heart out to God(Mark 14:32-36) ; received care from others(Mark 15:40) 11. Lived in Forgiveness (Mark 11:25)( Luke 6:27-31)(Luke 23:34) 12. He was motivated by LOVE!!!!!
