Capital Evolution: The New American Economy by Seth Levine, Elizabeth MacBride https://www.amazon.com/Capital-Evolution-New-American-Economy/dp/1637747780 Business overtook government. Now what? The future of capitalism isn't left or right—it's forward. In Capital Evolution: The New American Economy, Seth Levine and Elizabeth MacBride deliver a bold and timely reassessment of capitalism in America. Drawing on decades of experience in finance, journalism, and policy, Levine and MacBride argue that capitalism isn't the problem—it's the outdated neoliberal version we've been practicing that's failing us. From the rise of populism to the growing disillusionment among younger generations, the signs of strain are everywhere. But Levine and MacBride reveal how a new consensus—what they call Dynamic Capitalism—is already taking shape, one that balances profit with purpose, empowers the middle class, and addresses the urgent challenges of inequality and climate change. Through compelling stories of leaders like Jamie Dimon, Dan Schulman, Lisa Green Hall, and Larry Fink, Capital Evolution shows how businesses, governments, and individuals can work together to create an economy that works for everyone. This book is a call to action to embrace change, rebuild trust, and ensure capitalism remains the most dynamic force for progress the world has ever known. The future isn't a choice between old ideologies—it's about evolving to meet the needs of a new era. Capital Evolution is a compelling look at the changes taking hold in America's political system, information environment, and society, asking tough questions about the rising power of businesses in our economic system. Drawing on dozens of interviews with CEOs, academics, employees, and thought leaders, venture capitalist and author Seth Levine and journalist Elizabeth MacBride boldly challenge readers to take a hard look at our divisions and their impact on American economic supremacy.

America at a Crossroads: Book Review of Capital Evolution

Capital Evolution, the New American Economy - Book Review American capitalism is at a crossroads. Economic anxiety, political polarisation and the thinning of the middle class have made this unavoidable. Capital Evolution addresses this moment directly. Seth Levine and Elizabeth MacBride ask what form of capitalism can still offer a fair chance to most people, and what kind of economic model the United States is now drifting toward. The authors begin with the lived reality behind the debate: rising costs, fragile families, people shifting from job to job without building assets, and communities that never fully recovered from de-industrialisation. These examples are not used as anecdotes but as signs of a deeper structural shift. The economic model that shaped the late twentieth century no longer reflects the experience of many Americans. This is part of the backdrop to the political turbulence of recent years, including the return of Donald Trump and a renewed argument about the purpose of markets. The end of the old economic story Levine and MacBride argue that the neoliberal period, shaped by the influence of Milton Friedman, has reached its limits. Shareholder primacy, deregulation and faith in markets once promised efficiency and growth. Over time, these ideas widened inequality, weakened mobility and left many workers exposed to risk. The authors do not call for abandoning capitalism. Instead, they ask what form of capitalism can replace a model that no longer sustains the broad middle class it once relied upon. Policy Instability and Economic Uncertainty One of the strongest parts of the book examines the instability created by unpredictable policy. The authors describe how shifts in tariffs, trade rules and regulatory signals have increased uncertainty for businesses of all sizes. Several interviewees note how difficult long-term planning has become when rules can change quickly. This is not a debate about ideology but about reliability. Markets need steady ground beneath them. When policy becomes erratic, investment weakens and risk-taking declines. A System Moving Toward Industrial Strategy The authors place this in a wider context: the United States is experimenting with a more assertive industrial posture, particularly in strategic sectors. They describe the expansion of trade barriers and the emergence of a modern industrial policy, without judging it as good or bad. The question they raise is whether these changes are building a more productive system or simply adding volatility. What Dynamic Capitalism means The centre of the book is the idea of Dynamic Capitalism, it is not a blueprint but a direction. The authors argue that capitalism evolves, and that the next stage must focus on widening access to ownership, rebuilding economic mobility, reinforcing the rule of law and restoring trust in reliable information. Their emphasis on information is particularly strong. The epilogue argues that capitalism cannot function without truth. Reliable information underpins markets, contracts and risk-taking. If access to trustworthy information narrows, power concentrates and innovation suffers. As they write, "Capitalism cannot function without truth," and, "If these foundations erode at a national level, the viability of the American free market system itself could be at risk." Real-World Voices: What Entrepreneurs Say A number of founder and leader interviews illustrate this point. Dan Schulman of PayPal describes how redesigning pay structures and improving transparency changed internal culture. "Employee engagement skyrocketed," he told the authors, and he dismissed the old dichotomy outright: "This whole idea that profit and purpose are at odds with each other is ridiculous." These examples support the authors' argument that values, incentives and clear information matter inside real businesses. Other perspectives Viewed from outside the United States, many of the pressures described in Capital Evolution resonate ...

The Frankenstein Version of Neo-Liberalism: When American Business Overtook Government

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 15, 2025 41:35

For financial journalist Elizabeth MacBride, the New American economy is like the old one - only worse. Describing it as the “Frankenstein version of neo-liberalism”, MacBride explains that business has overtaken government to create ever-more-powerful bankers like Larry Fink and Jamie Dimon. But all is not lost. In her upcoming new book, Capital Evolution, co-authored with the VC Seth Levine, MacBride argues that there's a new consensus taking shape - what she calls “Dynamic Capitalism” - which balances profits with purpose. So if we can get beyond today's neo-liberal Frankenstein moment, she promises, America will be able to address the great 21st-century challenges of inequality and climate change. I have to admit I'm not convinced. Rather than capital evolution, I see the growing political power of Wall Street players like Dimon and Fink. We shall see. But when a Wall Street CEO like Jamie Dimon announces $10 billion bets on national security (as he did early this week), it's no surprise that the loudest calls these days are for revolution rather than evolution. Nor is it surprising that a 21st century version of Frankenstein - Mary Shelley's apocalyptic 1818 warning about the destructive consequences of industrialization - will be appearing on Netflix next month. 1. Business Has Overtaken Government in Power and InfluenceMacBride argues that CEOs like Jamie Dimon and Larry Fink now wield more power than most elected officials, yet remain fundamentally unaccountable. When Dimon announces $10 billion investments in national security, the lines between Wall Street and Washington have clearly blurred—perhaps irreversibly.2. We're Living in a “Frankenstein Version of Neo-Liberalism”The current system isn't classic neoliberalism but a corrupted mutation where government has been “co-opted and turned into a tool for punishing people.” The small-government ideology has created not freedom but a punitive state that serves corporate interests while abandoning its regulatory role.3. “Dynamic Capitalism” Requires Long-Term Sacrifice—But Who's Really Sacrificing?MacBride believes trauma from climate change, inequality, and COVID is creating willingness for short-term sacrifice for long-term stability—similar to the post-WWII generation. But as the interviewer notes, when titans like Dimon and Fink talk about sacrifice, they only get richer. The question remains: whose sacrifice?4. Trust Is the Currency of the New Economy—And It's in Short SupplyIn an age when institutions have weakened, MacBride advocates “trust but verify” as the operating principle. She argues figures like Dimon and Fink are “generally trustworthy” even if not “morally authoritative.” The interviewer's skepticism about figures like PayPal's Dan Schulman highlights how fragile this trust actually is.5. New Coalitions Are Forming, But Revolution May Trump EvolutionMacBride sees evidence of consensus-building around stakeholder capitalism and long-term thinking, particularly among Democrats after their electoral losses. But her optimism about “capital evolution” may be wishful thinking when the loudest calls are for revolution, not gradual reform.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Joseph Seligman arrived in the United States in 1837, with the equivalent of $100 sewn into the lining of his pants. Then came the Lehman brothers, who would open a general store in Montgomery, Alabama. Not far behind were Solomon Loeb and Marcus Goldman, among the “Forty-Eighters” fleeing a Germany that had relegated Jews to an underclass. These industrious immigrants would soon go from peddling trinkets and buying up shopkeepers' IOUs to forming what would become some of the largest investment banks in the world—Goldman Sachs, Kuhn Loeb, Lehman Brothers, J. & W. Seligman & Co. They would clash and collaborate with J. P. Morgan, E. H. Harriman, Jay Gould, and other famed tycoons of the era. And their firms would help to transform the United States from a debtor nation into a financial superpower, capitalizing American industry and underwriting some of the twentieth century's quintessential companies, like General Motors, Macy's, and Sears. Along the way, they would shape the destiny not just of American finance but of the millions of Eastern European Jews who spilled off steamships in New York Harbor in the early 1900s, including Daniel Schulman's paternal grandparents.Today's guest is Dan Schulman, author of “The Money Kings: The Epic Story of the Jewish Immigrants Who Transformed Wall Street and Shaped Modern America.” We trace the interconnected origin stories of these financial dynasties from the Gilded Age to the Civil War, World War I, and the Zionist movement that tested both their burgeoning empires and their identities as Americans, Germans, and Jews.

This is Dom Cooke and today we're breaking down PayPal. PayPal has been at the forefront of digital payments since the early days of the internet. Founded by Peter Thiel, Elon Musk and others, who have since become household names, PayPal is a payments marketplace that facilitates transactions between merchants and consumers. It found product market fit as the trusted way to send money over the internet, was quickly acquired by eBay, and had its second founding moment in 2015 when it was spun off into a public company again. The platform serves 435 million consumers and merchants and processed $1.4 trillion of payments last year. To break down the business, I'm joined by Elliot Turner, managing partner and CIO at RGA Investment Advisors. We discuss the acquisitive history behind this business, how their portfolio of brands like Braintree, Venmo, and Honey operate within the ecosystem, and why VISA threatened to go nuclear on PayPal. Please enjoy this business breakdown of PayPal.   For the full show notes, transcript, and links to the best content to learn more, check out the episode page here.  ----- This episode is brought to you by Tegus, the modern research platform for leading investors. We're taking a look back at our Fast Company Innovation Festival last fall. The world has changed dramatically in the three years since the Business Roundtable's new Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation popularized the term “stakeholder capitalism.” Some stakeholders (workers, customers) have become emboldened to demand more of companies, but stockholders and traditionalists who deride this more inclusive view of corporate purpose as “woke capitalism” have too. On this episode, PayPal President and CEO Dan Schulman chats with Lynn Forester de Rothschild, founding and managing partner at Inclusive Capital Partners about what stakeholder capitalism means today, and how the movement can weather economic headwinds and vocal naysayers.

Mixing business and social justice isn't a strategy most companies are willing to adopt, which is why Dan Schulman's actions as CEO of PayPal have garnered so much attention. In 2016, he canceled a plan for an operations center in North Carolina after the state passed its infamous "bathroom bill." Schulman champions his "employee first" strategy and has raised wages and benefits for PayPal's workforce. His leadership has proved that activism doesn't have to come at the cost of PayPal's bottom line.

We should measure that. We should control that completely. That will make a big difference.” So says Dan Schulman, President and CEO of PayPal, in this interview with Dr. Lori Esposito Murray, President of the Committee for Economic Development, the public policy center of The Conference Board (CED).   The CED discussion series, Leadership in Challenging Times, interviews business leaders about the unprecedented challenges facing the nation and how they are helping chart a path forward for both their companies and communities in which they operate.
