[A 'BEST OF' EPISODE] Combining business with social justice isn't a path most companies choose, which is why Dan Schulman's leadership as PayPal's CEO captured so much attention. In 2016, he halted plans for an operations center in North Carolina in response to the state's controversial “bathroom bill.” Schulman prioritizes an “employee-first” strategy, enhancing wages and benefits for PayPal employees. His leadership has demonstrated that activism doesn't takes anything away from the bottom line. In this 2020 conversation, Schulman reflects on the childhood that shaped his current values, and his journey from AT&T, Priceline, and eventually to CEO (now President) of PayPal.

Joseph Seligman arrived in the United States in 1837, with the equivalent of $100 sewn into the lining of his pants. Then came the Lehman brothers, who would open a general store in Montgomery, Alabama. Not far behind were Solomon Loeb and Marcus Goldman, among the “Forty-Eighters” fleeing a Germany that had relegated Jews to an underclass. These industrious immigrants would soon go from peddling trinkets and buying up shopkeepers' IOUs to forming what would become some of the largest investment banks in the world—Goldman Sachs, Kuhn Loeb, Lehman Brothers, J. & W. Seligman & Co. They would clash and collaborate with J. P. Morgan, E. H. Harriman, Jay Gould, and other famed tycoons of the era. And their firms would help to transform the United States from a debtor nation into a financial superpower, capitalizing American industry and underwriting some of the twentieth century's quintessential companies, like General Motors, Macy's, and Sears. Along the way, they would shape the destiny not just of American finance but of the millions of Eastern European Jews who spilled off steamships in New York Harbor in the early 1900s, including Daniel Schulman's paternal grandparents.Today's guest is Dan Schulman, author of “The Money Kings: The Epic Story of the Jewish Immigrants Who Transformed Wall Street and Shaped Modern America.” We trace the interconnected origin stories of these financial dynasties from the Gilded Age to the Civil War, World War I, and the Zionist movement that tested both their burgeoning empires and their identities as Americans, Germans, and Jews.

This is Dom Cooke and today we're breaking down PayPal. PayPal has been at the forefront of digital payments since the early days of the internet. Founded by Peter Thiel, Elon Musk and others, who have since become household names, PayPal is a payments marketplace that facilitates transactions between merchants and consumers. It found product market fit as the trusted way to send money over the internet, was quickly acquired by eBay, and had its second founding moment in 2015 when it was spun off into a public company again. The platform serves 435 million consumers and merchants and processed $1.4 trillion of payments last year. To break down the business, I'm joined by Elliot Turner, managing partner and CIO at RGA Investment Advisors. We discuss the acquisitive history behind this business, how their portfolio of brands like Braintree, Venmo, and Honey operate within the ecosystem, and why VISA threatened to go nuclear on PayPal. We're taking a look back at our Fast Company Innovation Festival last fall. The world has changed dramatically in the three years since the Business Roundtable's new Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation popularized the term “stakeholder capitalism.” Some stakeholders (workers, customers) have become emboldened to demand more of companies, but stockholders and traditionalists who deride this more inclusive view of corporate purpose as “woke capitalism” have too. On this episode, PayPal President and CEO Dan Schulman chats with Lynn Forester de Rothschild, founding and managing partner at Inclusive Capital Partners about what stakeholder capitalism means today, and how the movement can weather economic headwinds and vocal naysayers.

Mixing business and social justice isn't a strategy most companies are willing to adopt, which is why Dan Schulman's actions as CEO of PayPal have garnered so much attention. In 2016, he canceled a plan for an operations center in North Carolina after the state passed its infamous "bathroom bill." Schulman champions his "employee first" strategy and has raised wages and benefits for PayPal's workforce. His leadership has proved that activism doesn't have to come at the cost of PayPal's bottom line.

Five years ago, PayPal was considered a dinosaur in Silicon Valley. With an antiquated structure and business model, and new competitors like Apple Pay entering the market, the digital payments company’s future looked questionable. But in 2015, Dan Schulman took over as PayPal’s CEO. He brought with him a philosophy shaped by his experience studying the Israeli martial art of Krav Maga: never stand still. To constantly move forward, always be learning, and think expansively about the challenges you face. Today, PayPal is “a radically different company” than it once was, says Schulman. Under his leadership, PayPal has become one of the most successful tech companies in the world. He joins the podcast to talk about the mission to democratize financial services, why profit and purpose should never be at odds, and why being a “customer champion” means sometimes going against your own business model to do what’s right for customers. Listen to this episode to learn: • Why a company’s single biggest competitive advantage is its ability to attract and retain the best talent -- and pay them enough to be financially healthy • How PayPal created the “Net Disposable Income” metric to measure its employees’ financial well-being, and why other companies should do the same • Lessons from Schulman’s working relationship and kinship with Sir Richard Branson • How understanding someone’s life through experiencing it (rather than reading a report about it) engenders the authenticity and insight to design relevant products and services • Why CEOs shouldn’t be focused on politics, but rather consistently standing for a set of values

“We immediately went from working 100% from the office to 100% work from home; we'll remain working from home at least through October as we see how the virus progresses and how we protect the health and safety of our employees as we start to reopen.” For PayPal president and CEO Dan Schulman, the health and wellbeing of his 25,000 global employees comes first. They, in turn, are then better able to provide for the 300 million consumers and 25 million merchants using PayPal's platform. They were among the first non-bank companies able to deploy funds through the Paycheck Protection Program, speeding vital loans to those who needed them most. One bright spot Schulman sees during these challenging days is simple acts of goodwill. “There has been an outpouring of human generosity on our platforms. People spontaneously, virtually, tipping bartenders or artists, musicians, neighbors, small businesses, giving to their schools, to their places of worship. And when people receive that, they are then paying it forward to somebody else who is even in more desperate need.”

Additionally, he still believes the attempt to accommodate more transactions on the Bitcoin blockchain with the SegWit2x fork, which he backed, was wrong -- even though the fees after its failure skyrocketed to as high as $60. Plus -- he reveals what it would look like if Bitcoin became a global standard of value, and why that vision doesn't threaten governments. Thank you to our sponsors! I'm Dan Schulman, the President and CEO of PayPal. Welcome to Never Stand Still, a podcast focused on conversations with other leaders and executives about business, innovation and entrepreneurship. I start each morning practicing martial arts because it brings me balance and focus. But it's also taught me scores of life lessons, including "If you stand still, you're asking to be hit." And I've applied that lesson throughout my career, not just in business, but in life. And that's the inspiration for this show.

Essential to the rise of modern America was an exceptional financial system with an extremely dispersed banking system that emphasized investment in individuals, businesses, and local infrastructure. But in recent times, the US government reduced normal market risk associated with consumer credit, including loans for housing and education, and diverted a large share of capital from business to consumer credit. We need to rebuild investment in small- to medium-size businesses and capital flows that take advantage of technology to reduce obstacles to business growth. This panel will examine innovative means to channel private capital into potential growth areas like entrepreneurship and small businesses, creative ways of providing credit and moving payments, and how government policy could fuel these engines of growth.
