Fantastic Four. The Fantastic Four has had a rough time of it in the cinema. The first movie was released in 2005 and was met with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 27% and when The Silver Surfer was released in 2007 the reviews came in at 37%. Fast forward to 2015 and Fox has successfully handled the X-Men franchise and looked again to try it's hand at Marvel's first family. The City On the Edge of Forever. Nearly 50 years after it was written, “City” remains one of the most beloved of all Star Trek episodes. It's the first time travel story that most fans remember (sorry “Naked Time” and “Tomorrow Is Yesterday”) and made screwing with the past cool long before it became Star Trek's go-to trope. But, as a story that really lacks most of what makes TOS what it is, why does this story transcend time? In this episode of The Ready Room, we're joined by Phillip Gilfus, Andi VanderKolk, and Daniel Proulx to seek out the answer. We explore the premise, the time travel mechanism, soft-focus lighting, Edith Keeler's place in time, Kirk's dilemma, and what the story might have been like had it been set in Chicago—as Harlan Ellison originally wrote it. Daredevil. The last time Daredevil was seen on screen it was 2003 in theaters with the all-star cast of Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Michael Clark Duncan and Colin Farrell. Despite the star-power, the movie failed to capture audiences and quickly became synonymous with failure. Scotty in TNG.The continuing mission of the characters from Star Trek The Original Series was left a verboten topic for the first half of The Next Generation. However, after the appearance of Ambassador Sarek in season three ("Sarek"), as well as the cameo of a certain ornery admiral in the pilot episode "Encounter at Farpoint," the floodgates were open for TOS characters to "special" guest star in the second incarnation of Trek on television. Captain Montgomery "Scotty" Scott beamed into the 24th century in the sixth season episode "Relics" and found it difficult to find a place on this new Enterprise, with its "bloody" D suffix. When the lights went down in the theater in 1998, we all sat there with trepidation. We hoped that the new Star Trek movie would live up to it’s predecessor First Contact and when it didn’t, many of us wondered what had gone wrong. Jonathan Frakes had directed and Michael Piller had written the script, this should have been a dynamic duo. The Arts in TNG.The Next Generation arguably features the most concerts, play performances, poetry readings, and art works than any other Star Trek television series. Whether it was having every senior officer being musically inclined, having fun in the clay modeling room making a mask or an entry for "Captain Picard Day," or keeping Commander William T. Riker from the nude modeling painting class, TNG inserted cultural works into many episodes. The show's writers/producers made sure that noted Shakespearean performer Sir Patrick Stewart incorporated several references in the series' seven-year run, from the Bard's historical plays to his sonnets. Lt.
