In this episode,  Susan Griffin-Black, co-founder of EO Products, shares her story.  Susan tells us about her path from her early days in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to becoming a pioneer in the natural products industry. Raised by a father who was an early feminist and advocate for women's economic empowerment, Susan's entrepreneurial spirit was nurtured from a young age. She recounts her experiences in the fashion industry, opening her first retail store in San Francisco, and eventually co-founding EO Products. In 1995, Susan founded EO Essential Oils, starting with a few essential oil blends. Her vision was to create a company that she would want to work for, one that prioritized sustainability, community, and holistic well-being. Over the years, EO has grown significantly, becoming a trusted name in the natural products industry. Susan's story is one of intentional living. Susan's dedication to holistic, sustainable practices has been unwavering. "Our premise was we wanted to create a company that we would want to work for. And so what does that look like?” Susan's Buddhist spiritual practice has also been a guiding force, helping her navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. Susan has always believed in meeting people not for what they can do for you, but to understand their journey and learn from their experiences. As EO Essential Oils approaches its 30th anniversary, Susan is optimistic about the future. She plans to continue growing the business while staying true to its core values. New products are in the pipeline, and there are exciting plans to celebrate this milestone with the community. Susan Griffin's journey is a reminder and model  that success is not just about financial achievements but about values based living.  We hope Susan's story inspires you to stay committed to your dreams.  We also discuss the months when it was a struggle for Susan to make payroll and a living wage. It was not easy, but the alignment of values, purpose, great products and smart business decisions led to EO's success. Susan says, “You just have to collectively aim for the highest good for the most amount of people. Always, always, always." Memorable Quotes "I've had a Buddhist spiritual practice for 30 years. This is, I don't care what all of the external voices are saying, but if I go down this path, it's just not aligned with my values." "Our premise was we wanted to create a company that we would want to work for. And so what does that look like?  "Essential oils are like very, very distilled flowers and plants and bark and, you know, all sorts of plant material, but they have so much vitality." “You just have to collectively aim for the highest good for the most amount of people. Always, always, always." EO Products

Flooding on farmland is said to be one of the foremost concerns of people in West Clare. Following excessive rainfall in recent months, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and the Marine has recently told the Dáil it would be "premature to consider providing a grant scheme to farmers to develop land drains on their boundaries". 12,000 people, or roughly 20% of Clare's working population, are currently employed in the agricultural sector. Ballyea resident and Green Party local election candidate Susan Griffin says as extreme weather events become more commonplace, it's up to legislators to provide defences to protect farmers.

Talks of establishing a business improvement district in downtown Asheville stretch back to the 1980s. But over the past year, those talks have gained a lot of momentum, and some civic leaders are lobbying city council to approve it before the start of the next fiscal year.A chorus of critics are also reaching a crescendo with their opposition, pushing back against what they see as vague details, a lack of accountability and oversight and a process they say has been anything but thorough and inclusive.Today is the second half of a two-part conversation. My guests are Rebecca Hecht, owner of Shining Rock Goods; Susan Griffin, a 20-year downtown resident who co-chaired a previous effort to pass a BID; Karen Ramshaw of Public Interest Projects and Patrick Conant, founder of Sunshine Labs, a relatively new Asheville organization pushing for greater accountability and transparency in local government.Over the course of this conversation, we dissect some of the details, or lack thereof, of the proposed BID, including the subjective discretion of people hired to patrol the streets on behalf of the BID. We also talk about the potential economic impacts for residential renters and small business, the proposed power structure of the BID's governing board and criticisms of a process led by the Chamber of Commerce and Asheville Downtown Association.SPONSOR: Make the most of your time this spring and turn over your housekeeping to Greenland Pro Cleaning. There's seemingly a full-court press from certain civic leaders to push Asheville City Council to approve a business improvement district for downtown. This BID would tax property owners, and by extension downtown commercial and residential tenants, to pay for a supplemental workforce to help the city's efforts to clean up downtown and make it safer for the people who live, work and visit downtown.Amid this push, a pushback is developing steam from people with deep histories and stakes in the city. They smell vague details, a lack of accountability and oversight and a process they say has been anything but thorough and inclusive.A couple weeks ago, I produced an episode featuring the voices of advocates for the downtown BID. Today, in the first half of a two-part conversation, I talk with people with many concerns about the proposal on the table: Rebecca Hecht, owner of Shining Rock Goods; Susan Griffin, a 20-year downtown resident who co-chaired a previous effort to pass a BID; Karen Ramshaw of Public Interest Projects and Patrick Conant, founder of Sunshine Labs, a relatively new Asheville organization pushing for greater accountability and transparency in local government. Our talk dissects some of the details, or lack thereof, of the proposed BID, including the subjective discretion of people hired to patrol the streets on behalf of the BID. Today we share excerpts from “She's Beautiful When She's Angry,” a documentary filled with stories that still resonate today as women face new challenges around reproductive rights and sexual violence.  The documentary tells the stories of the activists of the Women's Liberation Movement that gained traction in the late 1960s and led to social and policy changes that set women on a path towards equality and reproductive justice. It also addresses the intersections of race and gender and the experiences of the Black women who were integral to this movement.  The film is about activists, those who inspire, organize, and revolutionize the world by changing the standards and broadening what we think is possible.  Learn more about the story and find the transcript on radioproject.org. Her presentation will help market researchers differentiate the work they do from others in the industry, and understand how, as builders, we can describe our end product rather than simply sharing our tools. (An awesome metaphor if we do say so ourselves.) You'll walk away from her session knowing how to make your brand accessible, memorable, and referrable. Quick note: My interviews this week were recorded in the last half of January, but publishing was delayed by my emergency trip out of town. My first interview is with constitutional scholar and law professor Rob Natelson. We talked about the constitutionality of impeaching President Trump a second time, whether the facts show that he incited an insurrection, and how the media has become much more propagandistic for one side of the political aisle than it has ever been. Natelson writes at Epoch Times regularly, and is articles can be found at https://www.theepochtimes.com/author-robert-g-natelson. My second interview is a first hand account of the mayhem and destruction in downtown Portland for the past nine months, as told by someone who lives there. Susan Griffin lives in Section 8 housing and is legally disabled. Originally she supported Black Lives Matter and worked actively to get far left Democrats elected in Portland. For her effort, she was rewarded with having her concerns about a lawless downtown completely ignored by city leadership. As someone who is permanently disabled and unable to move, she describes her no-win situation having to deal with nightly riots and frequent harassment by the homeless, drug addicts, and antifa rioters that leave her in constant fear and anxiety. Today is January 27, 2021. One week ago, we inaugurated new leaders in the United States. Many hope that President Joseph. Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris will cultivate an era of unity, democracy, and truth in this country.  Multiple flashpoints complicated the year 2020. The relentless coronavirus pandemic, accelerating discrimination against people of color, heightened climate emergencies, and the imploding global economy had a intense polarizing effect on the electorate. Kamala Harris, the first African-American and Asian American to become Vice President, is also the first woman to be given this tremendous opportunity. As she steps into a crucial role of responsibility, Harris inspires this episode.  What part can creativity play in such turbulent times?  We speak to six women artists and curators responding to the challenges of the past year with renewed resolve. Strengthening their engagement with vital issues and ideas, each one positions herself in service to social justice. Future episodes will reveal more about their individual awakenings. A dream led her to invite collaborators to celebrate all that Kamala Harris represents. Performance and poetry in the new art film When We Gather embody their collective hope and imagination.   Dr. Andrea Fatona is a Toronto-based curator and scholar who teaches in the graduate program at Ontario College of Art and Design University. For decades, she has sought to remedy the absence of Black visual art from critical writing, art archives and other avenues of representation. Whitewash, Nadine Valcin’s performance video about the history of slavery in Canada, is featured on Fatona's website: The State of Blackness.   Born and based in San Juan, Marina Reyes Franco is curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art. She talks about the Museum’s powerful new partner and introduces the metaphoric exhibition she will present this spring. In 2020, Reyes Franco took the time to support artist friend Sofía Gallisá Muriente in her creation of a new film. Sited on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico, Celaje is an elegy to the death of the Puerto Rican colonial project and the sedimentation of disasters on the island.   Water channels, fountains, roses and pools are elemental to the legendary Persian garden. Iranian-American artist Bahar Behbahani has been investigating the garden’s histories for years. In 2019, she created her first garden-inspired public art project at Wave Hill in the Bronx. In 2021, the artist aims to break ground on a purposeful Persian garden in Manhattan.   New York-based artist Mary Mattingly has always been concerned with sustainability, creating lyric environments that meet the basic needs of water, food, and shelter. Her latest project concerns the invisible infrastructure of public water in the city she calls home. Mattingly is diving deep—her urban case study exposes inequities that limit access to clean drinking water everywhere.    Early 2020 found Los Angeles based artist Andrea Bowers joining other women to read and record the poem “This Earth,” by Susan Griffin. Studying the spiritual origins of eco-feminism was among her solitary pursuits last year. When the pandemic slowed her activist projects, Bowers turned to re-examine how and why she makes art.

She launched EO as a 4 piece collection to Bloomingdales from her garage in 1995, all while being a a single mum and hustling every single day to pay the bills and keep the lights on, fast forward to today the business still remains independently owned by her alongside her co-founder Brad and pulls in around 50million dollars in revenue each year. Like the importance of pursuing the journey and the actual day to day of building a business rather than the pot of money at the end, and the why it’s critical as we move forward in the world to have women in complete control of their lives and being at the forefront of leadership. Sermon for the 23rd Sunday after Pentecost on the assigned readings for the day, especially the Gospel of Luke 21:5-19. "Susan Griffin writes, "...every important social movement reconfigures the world in imagination. What was obscure comes forward, lies are revealed, memory shaken, new delineations drawn over the old maps. It is from this new way of seeing the present that hope for the future emerges." Now, if this is true of social movements, it is especially true of the Gospel. It resonates throughout the Scriptures and the religious practices and beliefs that spring from them, because these are immensely powerful acts of imagination; God's imagination and ours. And they do reconfigure the world with the resulting acts of resistance and their absurd hope."

In the early 1990s, Susan Griffin-Black was working for Esprit in San Francisco. On a business trip to London, she walked into a Covent Garden apothecary shop, picked up a bottle of lavender oil and took a whiff. The aroma — "like being in a beautiful garden" — literally changed her life. That was the inspiration to develop her own line of essential oil products. For 15 years, she and her husband and co-founder Brad Black barely scraped by, but the business eventually thrived. And though their marriage ultimately ended, their partnership continues. Mother Earth is on the brink of destruction. Modern industry fosters ecological degradation through unsustainable habits of pollution and resource depletion. Male-driven civilization and its treatment of the natural world wreaks havoc all around us, but women hold the power to save life on this planet as we know it. Today's podcast features women who dedicate their lives to seeking and spreading knowledge of sustainable living. In our first interview, Thistle speaks with Susan Griffin, author of Woman & Nature: The Roaring Inside Her, a pioneering work of ecofeminist philosophy. In our second interview, Sekhmet speaks with Lierre Keith, radical activist and co-founder of Deep Green Resistance. These two interviews are framed by Maya's world headlines and Thistle's commentary on the womon-Earth connection. Along the way we hear music from Suzanne Vega, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and Big Bad Gina. Thank you for tuning in to WLRN's naturally gynocentric broadcast. Blessed be!

Professor Rebecca Sullivan joins us to talk about her role as the chair of the steering committee for the Sexuality Studies Association of Canada, and her book on the infamous second-wave feminist anti-porn documentary Not a Love Story: A Film About Pornography (1982). The film is directed by Bonnie Sherr Klein, a feminist filmmaker who was an important part of the National Film Board’s Studio D, a project focused on providing female directors the chance to make their own documentaries. The film is co-directed by stripper/activist Lindalee Tracey. And while the film seemed to have started out with the intention of being a progressive analysis of feminist sexual exploration, it eventually turned into the iconic anti-porn landmark that we know it as today. Over the last couple of decades, the film has been lambasted within porn studies circles due to its uncritical adoption of the views of anti-porn feminists like Susan Griffin and Robin Morgan. Interestingly, pornography/feminist scholar Rebecca Sullivan’s book: Bonnie Sherr Klein’s “Not a Love Story” (2014) is a reparative reading of the film that argues that in fact, the documentary’s importance is in offering a platform for sex workers to speak in their own voice throughout the film. While the film is best remembered for its anti-porn second half, Sullivan’s extensive interviews with Klein herself reveal an original intention to give voice and respect to the marginalized sex worker. And ultimately, Sullivan’s book is a cautionary tale of how a director’s intentions can radically change once the footage is turned over to an editor. This is a bold argument to make considering how much bad will the film has garnered over the years from sex-positive feminists. And in this interview, Professor Sullivan answers all the tough questions we ask regarding her alternative reading of the film. It’s a very enlightening conversation! You can watch Not a Love Story on YouTube More info about Bonnie Sherr Klein’s “Not a Love Story” More info about Rebecca Sullivan Editorial written by Sullivan titled: “Porn is a Part of Our Culture. We talk with Bo (Rita D.) Brown, who spent eight years in prison for her work as part of the revolutionary George Jackson Brigade.  A white working-class butch from rural Oregon, Brown was known as the “Gentleman Bank Robber,” for a number of years in Seattle.  Brown talks about coming out, becoming politicized and her relationship with Black Panther Assata Shakur. Bo Brown is now dealing with Lewy-Body dementia; a benefit for her expenses will be held on May 13 in Oakland. Then we sit down with two activist-authors who have written novels about climate change:  Susan Griffin, author of 20 books over 50 years, including the classic Woman and Nature, whose latest work (in progress) is The Ice Dancer's Tale, her first novel; and Ellen Meeropol, author of House Arrest and On Hurricane Island, whose newest book, Kinship of Clover weaves mental illness, family secrets and climate activism. Susan Griffin will be in conversation with Women's Magazine's Kate Raphael on May 21 at the second of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom's Peace Talks, from 3-5 pm at the Ed Roberts Campus in Berkeley.  Griffin's topic will be How War Erodes and Destroys Democracies, which we also touch on in tomorrow's interview.
