Delia Chiaramonte, MD is a physician whose life took an unexpected turn when her twelve year old daughter, Katrina,  suffered a severe brain injury. Delia believed she understood the challenges faced by caregivers—until she became one herself. Katrina's, and Delia's, journey began with a riding accident. Despite following medical advice to rest her brain, Katerina's condition worsened. She suffered from excruciating headaches, cognitive impairments, and a complete personality shift. The conventional medical approach offered little relief, and Delia found herself navigating a maze of specialists and treatments with no clear solution in sight. It wasn't until Delia combined her medical knowledge with complementary therapies that they began to see progress. They incorporated a variety of treatments, including neurofeedback, vision therapy, guided imagery, and even surgery. Delia emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive approach, stating,   “We need a bigger toolbox where we pull the best things that this person needs.”   This integrative approach not only helped Katrina recover but also transformed Delia's perspective on medicine. She now advocates for integrative palliative care, which combines conventional medical treatments with complementary therapies to address both the physical and emotional needs of patients and their families. Delia's journey underscores the critical role of caregivers and the need for a holistic approach to medicine. Her story is a powerful reminder that healing is not just about treating symptoms but about addressing the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Whether you're a caregiver, a medical professional, or someone interested in holistic healing, this episode offers valuable insights and inspiration. Tune in now and discover the power of integrative medicine and palliative care.     What they're saying:   “This is a beautiful book about life, its imperfections, its challenges, and its joys. It is a book of hope and wisdom for all of us facing a bump in the road.” –Pragito Dove   “Pat has woven together beautiful stories of life setbacks that have been transformed into spiritual growth. Hospice is a teeny tiny part of palliative care.” - Delia Chiaramonte [09:21] “When someone might die, they often change the way they're living. They stop doing things that they don't want to do, they stop seeing people that they don't like, and they focus on what really matters to them.” - Delia Chiaramonte [12:43] “People cause a lot of suffering for themselves by trying to control the things they can't control.” - Delia Chiaramonte [19:30] “Sometimes we wait to get through something difficult to be grateful. But I think it's more important to be, like you said, looking for those flowers while we're going through.” - Gerald J. Leonard [40:18] “When we are depleted, hard regular things become impossibly hard.” - Delia Chiaramonte [47:43] “If we're brave and willing to face the darkness, it can create such depth, connection, and meaning, and it can be a really powerful and even positive experience.” - Delia Chiaramonte   Resources Delia Chiaramonte Website - https://integrativepalliative.com/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/deliachiaramonte/ Book: Coping Courageously: A Heart-Centered Guide for Navigating a Loved One's Illness Without Losing Yourself Podcast: https://integrativepalliative.com/podcast   Productivity Smarts Podcast Website - productivitysmartspodcast.com   Gerald J. In this episode of Author's Corner host Myrna Young interviews Dr. Delia Chiaramonte about the topic of palliative care. Dr. Chiaramonte explains that palliative care is symptom-focused care for individuals with serious illnesses, regardless of whether they are seeking a cure. She dispels the myth that palliative care is the same as end-of-life care or hospice, emphasizing that it is a specialty that aims to reduce suffering and improve the overall well-being of patients and their families. Dr. Chiaramonte provides insights into how palliative care can be integrated into a patient's existing treatment plan and offers advice on how families can care for their loved ones without depleting themselves. The conversation also touches on the importance of having tough conversations and preparing for end-of-life decisions.Dr. Delia Chiaramonte is a board-certified physician specializing in family medicine, palliative medicine, and integrative holistic medicine. With a focus on reducing suffering and improving the quality of life for patients with serious illnesses, Dr. Chiaramonte provides symptom-focused care, coping strategies, and assistance with medical decision-making. She is the author of "Coping Courageously: A Heart-Centered Guide for Navigating a Loved One's Illness Without Losing Yourself."Key Takeaways:Palliative care is symptom-focused care for individuals with serious illnesses, regardless of whether they are seeking a cure.Palliative care aims to reduce physical, emotional, and spiritual suffering for patients and their families. It is important to let go of the idea of fixing everything and instead focus on walking alongside your loved one on their journey.Setting boundaries and seeking help early on can prevent caregiver burnout and ensure the best possible care for the patient.Palliative care can be integrated into a patient's existing treatment plan and does not require stopping other treatments or medications.See this video on The Transform Your Mind YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/@MyhelpsUs/videosTo see a transcripts of this audio as well as links to all the advertisers on the show page https://blog.myhelps.us/Follow Transform Your Mind on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/myrnamyoung/Follow Transform Your mind on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063738390977Please leave a rating and review on iTunes https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/transform-your-mind/id1144973094

On this episode, we welcome Dr. Delia Chiaramonte, an integrative, palliative care physician and medical educator, who helps seriously ill patients live their best life. By going beyond symptom management, forward thinking palliative care professionals aim to develop a model of care that places the individual's physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing at the center. Integrative palliative care combines conventional and complementary approaches. It has been shown to provide significant benefits to patients, including improved symptom management, better relationships with healthcare providers, and increased satisfaction with care. In this episode, we discuss mind-body tools for symptom relief, experiencing joy while living with a serious condition, confronting the fear of mortality, the growing use of psychedelics in terminal care, the advantages of team-based care, and improving overall quality of care for individuals.
