Defining Intellectual Wellness   Intellectual wellness is a vital component of our overall well-being that encompasses our cognitive activities and our engagement with new ideas, critical thinking, and learning. It's about expanding our knowledge and skills, fostering curiosity, and striving for mental growth and stimulation. This dimension of wellness is not confined to academic pursuits; it extends to all areas of life where the mind is actively involved. Assessing Your Intellectual Health In today's segment, let's take a moment for self-reflection to assess our current level of intellectual wellness. This self-assessment is a personal exercise to help you understand where you stand and what areas you might want to focus on to enhance your intellectual life. Strategies for Enhancing Intellectual Wellness   Improving our intellectual health is a proactive journey that requires dedication and a willingness to embrace various strategies that can enrich our minds. Let's explore some effective ways to nurture our intellectual wellness Overcoming Barriers to Intellectual Growth In pursuing intellectual wellness, we often encounter obstacles that can hinder our progress. A common challenge is the perceived lack of time. With our busy schedules, it can seem impossible to carve out moments for intellectual pursuits. However, the solution lies in prioritizing and managing our time more effectively. Even dedicating a small portion of our day, such as 15 minutes before bed to read or during a lunch break to work on a puzzle, can make a significant difference over time.

We kick off our new series on the 8 Components of Wellness by talking about our Intellectual Wellness. We're digging into the importance of things like curiosity, commitment to life-long learning, and the bravery to take on new challenges. We get honest about the way our mindset and our aversion to change get in the way of intellectual growth - but share tons of practical (and pretty fun) ways to start cultivating this necessary component of our overall wellness. We're trying new things, thinking about our thinking, and recognizing the power of learning.

Our conversation today with Cori Pence, Communications Specialist with Northwestern Community Services Board Prevention & Wellness Services is part of a year-long partnership with Northwestern Community Services Board highlighting eight different dimensions of wellness. Their "Rooted in" campaign is in its third year with 2023's message: Rooted in Wellness. They encourage community members to get involved by participating in a monthly challenge, attending a Lunch and Learn session, or accessing resources on their website. The goals of the campaign are to deliver the following messages of wellness: • To raise awareness about how being mentally well impacts not only one part of who we are; • To encourage community members to become mentally well; • To foster connection and resilience in our communities by emphasizing wellness. This month we recapped two of the wellness topics we've covered in-depth: Intellectual Wellness and Emotional Wellness. Cori also gave us details about the 2nd Annual Suicide Prevention Motorcycle Ride and Awareness Event happening on Saturday, September 16, 2023. September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. To bring attention to this topic, Northwestern Community Services Board and local partner organizations will host the event as a way to come together as a community to show support for those who have lost loved ones to suicide and to let individuals know that there are resources with whom to reach out and connect when in need. Get more details about the event here: https://www.nwcsbwellness.com/suicide-prevention-ride-and-awareness-event  You can find more details, resources, and information about emotional and intellectual wellness on their website: https://www.nwcsbwellness.com/rooted-in-wellness-campaign  “Rooted in Wellness” is a collaborative project. Prevention and Wellness works closely with local coalitions to reach each community in their service area. These include Family Youth Initiative, Page Alliance for Community Action, Warren Coalition, and Northern Shenandoah Valley Substance Abuse Coalition. In addition, the campaign hopes to bring awareness to 2 statewide initiatives: Activate Your Wellness and Lock and Talk Virginia. Each month there will be a call to action with tips, activities, and education to build up a specific dimension of wellness. There are various ways to engage in the campaign including through social media. This month's topic was Intellectual Wellness. Cori explained what that is and we talked about several approaches to improving your intellectual wellness. Intellectual Wellness means striving toward good mental health, continued intellectual growth, and creativity in life. We talked about reading and/or listening to audiobooks on topics that interest you - magazines count too! Journaling, playing brain games, and experiencing the arts (such as listening to music) are also helpful ways to increase your intellectual wellness. We also shared our personal tips, tricks, and struggles. We discussed the importance of having actual conversations with each other and listening to opposing opinions with an open mind.  Cori encouraged listeners to seek out online classes - many are free through your local library - and to research classes at our local community college. We talked about the role that stress plays in our overall wellness and how practicing yoga, and meditation can also help improve your intellectual wellness. Before we wrapped up our conversation, we circled back to how getting enough sleep is a valuable tool in all aspects of your wellness.  You can find more details, resources, and information about physical wellness on their website: https://www.nwcsbwellness.com/rooted-in-wellness-campaign/intellectual-wellness  “Rooted in Wellness” is a collaborative project. Hey Everyone! The subject of today's podcast is easy- intellectual wellness, or what we need to do to keep our minds sharp, balanced, and always learning something new. The concept is easy, but sometimes getting started isn't, and I wanted to talk about, from the perspective of a teacher of a topic that nurtures intellectual wellness, how adult learning of a hobby really is beneficial. I don't just talk about music in this episode, but how we can start with what you "always wanted to learn" and go from there. It's so good for you, why are you waiting? Don't put it off to the side any longer because life keeps going on. :) Want to learn more about the 8 facets of wellness? Here is the link for the Wellness Guide for Teachers! Today we are going to talk about how the way you approach parenting may be different from how your parents raised you. I am 33 years old, and a lot has changed since I was an infant. Looking at the advancements of car seats alone, we could find many ways things have changed. Over time we've learned more about different parenting styles and strategies. I believe the hardest part of self care is getting started, because, as mothers, we find it hard to give ourselves permission to move ourselves up on the priority list. I was curious about why mothers tend to put themselves last or not make time for themselves, so I did a bit of research. I was sad to find that there wasn't much support for us mothers, or encouragement to take care of ourselves or to want things for ourselves once we venture into our motherhood journey. My research proved that we, as mothers, have to surround ourselves with likeminded people who see our value and understand our need to pour into ourselves. I don't believe society will be changing it's tune or the way it sees motherhood anytime soon, so here are 5 things you can start doing today to take some time back for yourself. Have you ever felt stuck in a rut? Maybe you've felt "blah" or not quite yourself... I believe that "blah" feeling is really the feeling of disconnection from ourselves or a sign that we need to give ourselves a bit of attention. Recalibrate and revitalize your emotions when you can. Don't settle for the feeling of blah. Do what you can to improve how you feel in the moment. When you're feeling stuck in a rut, do these 3 things: Acknowledge your feelings - don't ignore how you're feeling and don't dismiss or diminish your feelings just because you have a lot to accomplish that day Do a simple activity like listen to your favorite song, take a walk, affirmations, focus on your breathing. Constantly Moving Along the Wellness Continuum

The wellness continuum is a sliding scale with no end. The goal is to move towards wellness, but each moment can take us in any direction. Wellness isn't simply the absence of disease. It's a multidimensional continuum that encompasses both sides of health. The goal is to move towards optimal wellness, but the reality is we move up and back with every situation. What is Wellness? The National Wellness Institute defines wellness as "an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence." Basically it means you are practicing habits that move you towards better mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing so that you can achieve your full potential. The illness-wellness continuum shows a visual interpretation that shows how wellness is not simply the absence of disease, in fact there is a neutral point that depicts neither illness or wellness. The Illness-Wellness Continuum  This visual of the concept of wellbeing was first proposed by John Walton Travis in 1972. People generally associated wellness with the absence of illness. But through his illustration he showed that overall wellness includes many factors. Not only is there the absence of physical disease, but it takes emotional and mental health into account as well. Just because someone doesn't have physical disease, it doesn't mean they don't suffer from mental disease. Dimensions of Wellness There are many factors when it comes to wellness. While many focus on the physical and mental aspects, other areas come into play as well. Physical Wellness- the state of your physical health meaning how you eat, sleep and move your body affects your overall wellbeing.Emotional Wellness- the state of your feelings and emotions and how you cope with relationships and life in general.Social Wellness- how you interact with others.Spiritual Wellness- using your beliefs and values to live a meaningful life and develop a world view.Intellectual Wellness- keeping your brain stimulated by engaging in activities that are creative and challenge you.Environmental Wellness- making sure your environment allows your well-being to thrive.Occupational Wellness- enriching your life through work that is fulfilling and rewarding. The Importance of Wellness Being able to live life to your full potential requires you to be in a positive state of wellness. Our body cannot function at it's best if we are in a state of disease, whether it is physical or emotional. As we move towards wellness, we start to see many areas of our life improve. From our physical health, to the state of our relationships. Like Newton's First Law of Motion states that a body in motion remains in motion. This can be applied to the motion towards wellness. If we start with one are and work to improve on it, then we are motivated and able to work on other areas. This will come together to affect all areas of wellness and will help our overall wellbeing. Examples of Wellness There are many ways that you can work on your overall well-being. Here are some examples for all dimensions of wellness. Focus on eating wholesome nutritious food.Move your body each day.Meditate.Participate in activities that challenge you and make you step out of your comfort zone.Do something nice for a friend to show them that you care.Practice mindfulness.Surround yourself with people who contribute positively to your life.If you belong to a church, attend activities.Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night.Monitor how much social media you take inStart a new hobby. These are just some examples, there are many things you can do to improve your overall state of health in order to live your best life. Don't forget to download this healthy habits guide to help you along the way!
