Angela James is a Chicago singer-songwriter who just released a beautiful new album, co-produced with David Vandervelde (Father John Misty) called "Now That I Have You".  "I'm making what I feel like is the best work in my career. I had a lot of opportunities early in my career, and that was great, but I was so new and I had just started writing songs and just started playing music, and I didn't have the confidence, and now it's like, I'm making better work. I have more confidence." - Angela James I loved talking with Angela.  As a musician who is also a mom, I'm always excited to speak with other musician moms to see how they balance their lives and art.   Angela speaks in a calm, thoughtful way about a range of pretty wild topics, including using psychedelics, postpartum depression and psychosis, death, grief, and working in hospice.  We also talk about her creative process, her new album, and how her relationship to her music career has changed over time.  Finally, we share our love for the Chicago music scene, and how unbelievably talented, accessible, and supportive it is.   We cover: How do you make music when you become a parent? How does your relationship to art change when you hit middle age? What does music success look like? Can psychedelics help spiritual growth? Should you wait to have kids if you're trying to be a musician? Visit musictherapypodcast.com for show notes, past episodes, and upcoming events! **Trigger Warning for suicide and mental health struggles** Burn It All Down offers our condolences to the family and community of Katie Meyer, a goal keeper of Stanford's women's soccer team. Katie was part of the Cardinal's 2019 NCAA title winning team and wowed the country with her tenacity and her spirit. She died one week ago. We hold space and share in the heartbreak with with the Meyers family, Stanford community and all young athletes who are grieving and devastated at this time. The number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in the USA is 1-800-273-TALK (8255); and in Canada is 1-833-456-4566. In this episode Shireen Ahmed, Lindsay Gibbs and Brenda Elsey talk all about owners of sports teams and leadership. But first, they share their favorite fangirl moments to celebrate International Women's Day. Then, they dive into the (mostly) bad apples of sports ownership. Sparked by the ongoing owner imposed lockout in MLB, they discuss they ways greed, capitalism and racism by owners ruin the sports we love, the different ways that owners have been held accountable by fans and alternative models to single-person ownership of teams. Following this discussion, you'll hear a preview of Lindsay's interview with Howard Megdal on all things WNBA and women's college basketball. Next, they burn the worst of sports this week on the Burn Pile. Then, they celebrate those making sports better including Torchbearers of the Week, the first Black and Indigenous owners of a team in the Premier Hockey Federation, including Anthony Stewart, Angela James, Bernice Carnegie and Ted Nolan. They wrap up the show with What's Good in their in their lives and What We're Watching in sports this week. This episode was produced by Tressa Versteeg. With turnover rates in the mental health profession annually ranging from 40-70% it's time we begin to really explore what may be the cause of so many strong, passionate and driven professionals to leave and pursue other career paths. Many times in this profession we focus less on all of the wonderful and hopeful things we learn in the school setting and become so productivity and dollar driven. This can cause a helping professional to second guess their role in these settings and perceive the job as more harm than good. When these professionals leave, the harm doesn't just end with another professional jaded by the system or with heavy hearts, it causes damage to the client and their relationship to mental health and overall healthy relationships. If we as professionals new and seasoned want to reduce harm we must seriously look at how and what we are doing to sustain providers in this profession. This weeks guest Angela James, LMFT and I sit down and talk about mental health, private practice, the importance of mentorship and increasing our community care to preserve strong professionals. Angela has been a mental health professional since 2004. After years of community mental health service she decided to take the leap into the private practice world. She has opened the door for many professionals to see private practice from another lens. This leap has supported Angela to sustain in the profession, but also give back to others who are at the end of their rope and wanting to throw in the towel because mental health is not a supportive community. This episode is for the new grads, I hope you are able to gain valuable knowledge that will sustain you long-term and for current professionals I challenge you to be the community for new professionals that you needed when you first began your journey. Sarah Nurse was the first Black woman to ever play in an Olympic hockey final. Now, as part of the PWHPA, Nurse (who recently inspired an official Barbie doll in her image) has become a role model for the game’s next generation.Show NotesTo celebrate International Women’s Day, we at Barrier Breakers wanted to celebrate one of the most inspiring and outspoken women in our game: Hamilton’s own Sarah Nurse. As Sarah says off the top of our episode, “It's difficult for women and women of colour to get into hockey because there are so many people telling us that we can't and that we shouldn't.”We’ve talked a lot in this series about the importance of representation in hockey. Until you start seeing players like yourself in the NHL, or on the Olympic stage, it’s tough to truly believe you can make it there. But representation doesn’t come without a fight.Whether it’s said out loud, or communicated in subtle ways, the Game doesn’t always welcome everyone in with open arms. And no one knows this better than the pioneers of women’s hockey. The world of Hockey celebrates the women’s game now—greats like Hayley Wickenheiser, Jayna Hefford, Angela James, and Cammi Granato are all rightfully in the Hockey Hall of Fame. But in the 1950s, a nine year-old Toronto girl named Abby Hoffman had to cut her hair and register as ‘Abe’—a boy—because there was nowhere for women to play. Almost forty years later, the women’s game had triumphantly grown enough to warrant the creation of a World Championship. The first one took place right here in Toronto, in 1987. But the International Ice Hockey Federation—our sport’s governing body—didn’t even want to recognize it at first. It’s been a fight. And yet, the women’s game has never been better. The calibre of play on offer today is exceptional. At the time we recorded this episode, the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association Dream Gap Tour had just made history, rolling into Madison Square Garden. Since then, it has also touched down in Chicago. Join Auston Matthews, Billie Jean-King, Cassie Campbell-Pascall and many more and put a stick in the ground in support of professional women’s hockey. If boys can dream of playing professional hockey, why can’t girls? The times, they are a changin’. And we are very excited that the Maple Leafs have partnered with the PWHPA to be a part of that change. To learn more about the Dream Gap Tour and how you can Put a Stick in the Ground, visit here.A very big thank you to Sarah for taking the time with us, speaking so candidly about her story and her hopes and dreams for the future of the game. Give her a follow on Instagram and Twitter. This has been our fifth episode of Barrier Breakers, our celebration of the amazing Black men, women, players and community organizers who are changing our game for the better. ‘Breaking Barriers’ was co-created by us here at Leafs Forever and Akil Augustine. Today's episode was written by Scott Willats and Paul Matthews, produced by Renita Bangert and Katie Jensen of Vocal Fry Studios for Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment.Further thanks to digital producer Emily Latimer and Executive Producer Michael Gelfand.  If you liked the episode, tell people about it. In this episode, Angela James joins the show. Amidst the pandemic, Angela opened Classroom to Couch, which is her private practice coaching business. We talk all about the importance of community over competition. In private practice, other therapists aren't your competition; they are your community and a great referral source. Later, Angela gives her three-step process to opening a private practice. Plus, we talk about making the switch to telehealth and why it has never been easier to open a private practice. Meet Angela James My name is Angela James and I'm a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in California. I've been practicing as a therapist for over 13 years and am grateful to be doing what I love. I'm nationally certified in TF-CBT which focuses on the treatment of Trauma in youth. I am a strong believer in the brain's ability to heal from past traumas and for PTSD to be seen as curable, given the right therapeutic intervention. I also specialize in helping adult women overcome anxiety and panic disorder related symptoms. I've always been passionate about helping others reach their full potential, so when I noticed myself eager to assist Therapists in opening their own Private Practice, it only seemed natural to develop this part of my professional career. Amidst this Pandemic, I opened Classroom to Couch which is my Private Practice coaching business. I am thrilled to see other mental health professionals reach their small business dreams and absolutely love being a small part of that process. Community Not Competition Therapists will view other therapists as their competition; it's a huge mistake. Angela says that private practice made her step out of her comfort zone and connect with other therapists. With a scarcity mindset, therapists think that all other therapists are their competition. However, it's simply not the case. When you build relationships with other therapists, you can refer potential clients to each other. Not everyone has the same niche, so your ideal client will not be another therapist's ideal client. In fact, Angela says that other therapists are her number one referral source. Connect with other therapists in the community and get to know them so you can generate more referrals. Angela's Three-Step Process Angela helps therapists using a three-step process. Step one is all about business basics; that's Angela's biggest passion. With Angela, you'll talk about the different business structures and which one could be a good fit for you. Step two is all about HIPAA compliance. Step three is all about networking, advertising, and marketing. Angela will teach you all about how to get the best referrals and how to network with other therapists in private practice. Plus, Angela says that her program is affordable and attainable. Switching To Telehealth Angela built an entire telehealth practice in the span of the weekend when the pandemic started. Luckily, Angela didn't lose very many clients. Even some that were unsure about telehealth eventually came back and gave it a shot. A lot of teenagers are actually a lot more comfortable with therapy via telehealth. At first, Angela struggled. However, she adapted and grew. The best part is that Angela can see clients from all over the state of California. Now, she has access to tons of people that she didn't before; it's incredible. Plus, Angela's coaching business was born out of Covid. You don't need a lot of money to start a telehealth practice, and now you have access to so many more clients. In the mental health world, Covid hasn't been a bad thing from the professional side. Starting A Private Practice The easiest way to get started in private practice is to create a telehealth practice from your house. There are not a lot of start-up costs to get it going. The earliest that Angela will be back in her office is in August. After the pandemic, telehealth isn't going anywhere. Moving forward, Angela will integrate both telehealth and in-person days so she can meet everyone's needs. Plus, with telehealth, you can see people from all over the state; it's a massive game-changer for your private practice. Also, Angela encourages clinicians to keep telehealth as part of their practice because people prefer it and it expands their reach. Telehealth is a considerable convenience; people no longer have to take off work to see their therapist.   Being transparent… Some of the resources below use affiliate links which simply means we receive a commission if you purchase using the links, at no extra cost to you. It can take a lot to calm down a tired baby.  Since the beginning of time parents have struggled to get their children to go to sleep.   I'm tired.  Really tired, and I was so lucky to have this conversation with Angela James to make my day better.  Angela James' album "Quiet Night'",which is a collection of lullabies made for weary parents by weary parents.  It is a beautiful and carefully crafted album inspired by James' own experiences as a new mother and with battling postpartum depression.'     "What began with humming as a coping mechanism to calm both her daughter and herself in her postpartum fog, evolved into this collection of fully formed and arranged lullabies. The instrumentation on the album; voice, classical guitar, bass clarinet, bassoon and vibraphone, is unique and deliberately in the mid-to-low tonal range, creating a serene but captivating soundscape. The concept of the album is to help set the stage for a child’s restful sleep and to support and soothe parents during the demanding and exhausting first months with a new child."  Continue reading Episode #223 – Angela James on the site.

A vote that Western powers never recognized and accused Russia of illegally annexing Crimea from Ukraine. Now, both Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump are in Argentina for the G20 Summit. They were expected to have a sit down meeting. Complicating the situation is the Mueller probe. Paul Manafort, who headed the Trump campaign at some point, is said to have lied about his relationship with former Russian-backed President of Ukraine Victor Yanukovych. Yanukovych was overthrown in a U.S.-backed coup and replaced with U.S. and Western-leaning Petro Poroshenko. Our guest is Nicolai Petro, the Silvia-Chandley Professor of Peace Studies and Nonviolence at the University of Rhode Island. He was a Fulbright scholar in Ukraine in 2013-2014, and is the author of a well-received article in The Nation magazine titled "Ukraine's Pinochet Scenario." And, for our weekly Earth Watch, new threats to the Amazon Rainforest with the election of far-right president Bolsonaro to head the government in Brazil. Our guest is Christian Poirier, a senior member of Amazon Watch's team. Having coordinated the Brazil Program since 2009, Christian also led the organization's efforts to encourage a shift toward non-hydro energy alternatives in Brazil's electricity matrix. And the impact of homelessness on women and children. The fastest growing population of the homeless in LA County and across the country are mothers with their children. We're joined by Angela James, she holds a Ph.D. in Sociology, and has written on a variety of topics regarding race, inequality, and family. She is co-author, along with Donna L. Franklin, of the revised paperback edition of Ensuring Inequality: Structural Transformations of the African American Family, Oxford University Press. 2015. Two people have died in immigration detention. Maru Mora Villalpando, herself undocumented and a Mexican activist, organizer and mother, will break all of this down for us. Simultaneously, there is a hunger strike that is underway in Yarl's Wood, which is a women's detention center in the United Kingdom.
