Today's Royal Blue Podcast features Ian Croll and Joe Thomas. Sean Dyche acknowledged Beto and Dominic Calvert-Lewin's partnership had looked ‘rusty' as he detailed his search for answers over Everton's injury list. The pair started up front together for the first time as Dyche shifted his approach in an attempt to deal with the absence of Abdoulaye Doucoure and Andre Gomes. After the FA Cup defeat, Dyche said he had learned something new from watching the pair together - a lesson that could be key with Doucoure expected to miss the Premier League trip to Fulham in midweek. A frustrating week for the Toffees is capped off with a 3-0 throttling away at Molineux vs an in-form Wolves team. James and Alex are here to break things down and round out the year of fixtures. They discuss Dyche's decision to drop Gomes and add Michael Keane, creating a back 5, as well as the frustrating decision to leave substitutes until the game was already out of reach. Level-headedness prevails, however, as some great listener comments highlight how important the missing Doucoure and Gana are to Everton's push for mid-table safety. Abdoulaye Doucoure has netted 15 times for Everton in his century of matches, giving him an overall strike rate of a goal every 6.67 games. However, 11 of those goals have come in the last 26 matches, to produce a goal every 2.36 matches, an incredible rate for a midfielder, especially when you consider that the Blues' main striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin's 50 Premier League goals have been over 193 appearances, for a goal every 3.86 games. Other than being Everton's “Johnny on the spot” as Dyche has called him – Doucoure was again in the right place at the right time to stick the ball in the net against the Londoners after Calvert-Lewin's initial shot was saved – just how has his game actually altered since the change of management at Goodison Park? Everton begin the season with consecutive losses for just the 2nd time in the PL era after falling 2-1 away to Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa side. Stateside Toffees who woke up early for this one likely felt a certain amount of regret after an uneventful first half was marked by a Danny Ings goal to put the Villains in the driver's seat. Buendia added another late in the second half which looked to effectively end the match before a Lucas Digne own goal injected some life into the Blues as stoppage time approached, where they nearly grabbed an equalizer. Ryan, Alex and James get into all the details: Doucoure's injury, Coady's first start, Onana's debut, Frank's questionable subs. Manchester United get played off the park at Old Trafford by Wolves in a shocking 1-0 loss Tottenham Hotspur survive Watford with Sanchez world tour revival West Ham get off the schneid 2-3 (on the schneid?) in a thriller vs Palace (without Gallagher - sad.) It's the second instalment of Game Changers presented by CDIC! This time we speak with Nadia Doucoure, who originally hails from France but moved to Canada 7 years ago and is currently the receivers coach for the Carleton University football program. Tune in this season to these special edition episodes presented by CDIC.
Rob is joined by Paddy to answer: What is the adjustment without Doucoure? Is it Richarlison's time to shine? How does the Everton-Yerry Mina contract play out? There's also TV Talk, focusing on Succession, Squid Game, Midnight Mass and Nine Perfect Strangers.
The power trio is back to discuss the Toffee's unfortunate home loss at the hands of David Moyes West Ham United. Alex, James, and Ryan get to the bottom of the deflating affair, with particular emphasis on the first half tactics that seemed to take the wind of our Everton's sails. In addition to the usual listener comments, the boys explore several additional topics such as the emphasis on zonal marking as a set piece defense and whether or not a team can really succeed with such little possession. In addition, they examine how Everton can handle the loss of Doucoure and whether or not the impending hire of another member of the medical staff can get Everton out of the injury bug that seems to be ballooning out of control. This weeks episode kicks off with the blues, Gary Judge and Andrew Price, discussing their sides 1-1 draw away at Old Trafford. They question whether Everton were unlucky not to take all three points while praising Benitez's tactics and the performance of Gray, Townsend and Doucoure. They give their opinion on the Tom Davies' decision making in regards to the disallowed goal late on. Next the reds, Terry McGivern and Gary Murray, get stuck into their hard fought home draw with last years champions Man City. The talk surrounds Fabinho looking unusually leggy, Milners struggles at RB and the brilliance and importance of “best in the world” Mo Salah. Next up is the social media section of the show where the lads are tasked with answering questions including Salahs contract situation, Gbamin's continued absence, Everton plodding along and Sadio Manes struggles. This weeks “week in history” begins with the blues remembering their Europa league aggregate defeat to Standard Liege in 2008, while the reds discuss Brendan Rogers departure and Klopp jointing back in 2004. Our final segment this week is “who am I” hosted by Gary Murray, starting with an ex blues player before ending with a former red.
