When Anthony Albanese’s new ministry was sworn in this week, it was overshadowed by the axing of Ed Husic and Mark Dreyfus. Husic in particular didn’t go quietly, calling Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles a “factional assassin”. After a landslide victory – with 93 seats and counting – the prime minister could choose from a significant talent pool to assemble the ministry. But the process was limited by longstanding factional rules. Today, special correspondent for The Saturday Paper, Jason Koutsoukis, on whether factions help or hurt the Labor Party – and who won out. As the second phase kicks off, it’s no longer about votes — it’s about narrative. Julie dives into how the Albanese government is framing their victory, from pinning part of their success as vindication for their moderate stance on Gaza to Ed Husic’s quiet political exile, Julie challenges listeners to stay alert to the stories politicians tell — and the ones they silence. This is: Australians call for AI safety to be taken seriously, published by AlexanderSaeri on July 21, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. The Australian Government is considering how to regulate AI in Australia, has published a discussion paper ("Safe and Responsible AI"), and has invited feedback by 26 July 2023: "We want your views on how the Australian Government can mitigate any potential risks of AI and support safe and responsible AI practices." Good Ancestors Policy (goodancestors.org.au/policy), with the support of EA and AI Safety community organisers in Australia, have coordinated Australians' submissions to the feedback process. Today, the website Australians for AI Safety launched with a co-signed letter (media release). The letter called on the relevant Australian Federal Minister, Ed Husic, to take AI safety seriously by: recognising the catastrophic and existential risks addressing uncertain but catastrophic risks alongside other known risks working with the global community on international governance supporting research into AI safety Good Ancestors Policy have also held community workshops across Australia (e.g., Brisbane, Perth) to support members of the EA and AI Safety community in understanding the feedback process and preparing submissions, including access to some of the best evidence and arguments for acknowledging and addressing risks from AI. Policy ideas are drawn from the Global Catastrophic Risk Policy database (), the AI Policy Ideas database (aipolicyideas.com), and expert community input. So far, about 50 members of the community have attended a workshop, and feedback we've received is that the workshops have been very helpful, the majority (~75% people) are likely or very likely (>80% likelihood) to make a submission, and that most (~70% people) would be unlikely or very unlikely (

Gazetemizin dünkü nüshasında haber olarak da okudunuz: Avustralya Başbakanı Anthony Albanese, kurduğu kabinede iki Müslüman bakana yer verdi. Bosna Hersek kökenli Ed Husic ve Mısır kökenli Anne Aly, düzenlenen törende Kur'ân'a el basarak yemin edip görevlerine başladı.

AFR’s tech editor, Paul Smith knows the in’s and out’s of Australia’s startup & tech sector. He’s not our usual founder or investor-type guest on the pod. However, as a regular reporter on the ecosystem, and a genuinely knowledgeable and well-versed guest, we were delighted to host him this week on #OTPBD and discuss media exposure for startups, the digital shift in journalism, the implications of new technologies and more!Having previously worked for Fairfax in London, Paul moved to Australia and has been working for the AFR since 2002. As an experienced journalist, we quickly deep-dived into one of the biggest ‘needs’ listed by startups in the 2018 Startup Muster Report – Media Exposure. From here, Paul discussed the importance and power of storytelling particularly with regards to pitching your story to journalists. The landscape of journalism has changed immensely throughout Paul’s career which led to the discussion of Paul’s perspectives on journalism in the digital age. Paul mentioned, ‘the industry trained people in the early days of the internet to expect content/news to be free, where everyone put all content up online.’ Whilst a number of individuals still pay subscriptions to read valid news sources (AFR, Guardian etc.), people are looking up free content on social media and online publications. We continued the discussion onto the implications of the new technologies particularly the rise of automation, and its impact on future jobs. ‘Any tech company you talk about automation will say, it’s not replacing work, it’s improving work – but it’s definitely not going to be true in every instance. We can’t deny that it’s not going to happen. But we need to look at what does re-training look like, or a universal wage?’Finally, we ventured into tech in the political landscape – the recent passing of the AA and encryption Bill, Ed Husic’s role in the tech sector and the potential for a new government (as this was ep was recorded pre-election).Once again, we were thrilled to speak with Paul this week and hope you enjoyed this episode!
