Milwaukee Equal Rights Commission Holds Meeting on Facial Recognition

On Wednesday, June 18th, one day before Gus T. was scheduled to fly back to Seattle, Milwaukee's Equal Rights Commission held a meeting to discuss a proposed "trade" that would allow the Milwaukee Police Department to acquire free Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) cameras from the company Biometrica. In the proposed swap, Biometrica receives 2.5 million mugshots of people arrested by MPD. The demographic most likely to be arrested in Milwaukee is black males. Gus sat front row for this fascinating and informative discussion. Mostly people classified as White were in attendance - although there were a substantial number of non-white people present. None of the MPD representatives were classified as black even though the city of Milwaukee has a majority black population. All of the alleged criminals who were shown to be nabbed with the assistance of FRT were privileged black males. Gus was forced to leave this important discussion early because of a 7pm commitment in WhiteFolks' Bay. #ForSade INVEST in The C.O.W.S. - https://cash.app/$TheCOWS #TheCOWS16Years CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Their work explores identity formation through personal and historic archives, cinematic imagery, and emerging technologies.  The recent exhibition entitled "Facial Recognition" at Jane Lombard Gallery in New York, featured Lau Wai's "Decrypted Sentient 02," a video work with two digitally generated entities discussing their existence and questioning which one of them is the original. Through this work, and others, Wai blurs the boundaries of virtual and physical realities while addressing the impact of AI and digital representation.

Foodstuffs is hoping to bring retail crime down after a successful trial of live facial recognition technology. The Privacy Commissioner has deemed Foodstuffs North Island's trial compliant with the Privacy Act, and effective in reducing harm. But his report states there's more work to do. General Counsel for Foodstuffs North Island, Julian Benefield, says retail crime has put staff at risk - and the company's hoping to change that. "Our trial has been a success, it found that technology was effective in reducing harm. Our independent evaluator found a 16 percent reduction in serious harm incidents across the trial period - and over 100 serious incidents avoided." Foodstuffs North Island's facial recognition trial might have the tick of approval overall, but there's still work to do. The Privacy Commission's ruled the trial was compliant with the Privacy Act and was successful in reducing harmful behaviour. But Commissioner Michael Webster told Mike Hosking they're recommending Foodstuffs keep systems updated and review impacts of skin tone on identification accuracy. Webster says there are still concerns over technical bias issues due to the software coming from overseas. It's also made recommendations for other interested businesses. NSF announces RIF plans; Senators want TSA to scale back facial recognition at airports

The National Science Foundation is taking steps to slash its workforce, including reducing the number of senior executive service roles as well as temporary and non-federal roles, according to an internal memo to staff obtained by FedScoop. The memo was emailed to staff Friday afternoon by Chief Management Officer Micah Cheatham. It also included plans to require in-person work starting June 16 and the elimination of the Division of Equity for Excellence in STEM in the next two months, which it announced publicly Friday as well. Details of the agency's workforce reduction plans come after its termination of hundreds of grants that don't align with President Donald Trump's policies, such as those that included diversity, equity and inclusion activities. Amid those actions, Sethuraman Panchanathan resigned his position as NSF's director. Panchanathan had been appointed by Trump during the president's first term. Per the memo, NSF began on Thursday a reduction-in-force of its senior executive service workforce, which is a designation for federal senior leadership and management officials. Of the 143 total SES roles — including vacant positions — that NSF had on Jan. 20, just 59 are needed under the agency's “new organizational structure and proposed future year budgets.” A bipartisan group of senators introduced legislation last week that would scale back the Transportation Security Administration's facial recognition program, giving travelers the right to not have their faces scanned when passing through airports. The lawmakers say their push for the Traveler Privacy Protection Act comes as the Department of Homeland Security component seeks to expand the use of facial recognition at hundreds of airports. Specifically, the bill would require the TSA to clearly inform passengers of their right to not participate in the DHS facial recognition program and bar the agency from providing worse treatment to passengers that choose not to participate. The legislation would also forbid the TSA from storing traveler facial recognition data indefinitely and from using the technology to target people or conduct mass surveillance. Sens. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., John Kennedy, R-La., Ed Markey, D-Mass., and Roger Marshall, R-Kan., are co-sponsors of the bill. The Daily Scoop Podcast is available every Monday-Friday afternoon. Tim and Mary Danielsen dive into headlines once again, if only to prove we are not robots but real humans. Is everyone sick of trying to prove they are flesh and blood? Or hoping that the pictures you click on will pass the test? This system is actually called CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to tell Computers and Humans Apart). It is a computing test to determine if the user is human. It is sometimes called the reverse Turing test, as the point is to prove humanity rather than artificial intelligence. I for one believe that the burden of proof is on the Artificial Lifeform to come forth and identify themselves. Today we talk about that alternate reality that is the internet. Patrick Wood has for some time now said that reality barely exists anyway, so we will look at what that means. We also look at Canadian elections; the Pope as Muslim apologist; an update on the Temple Mount; catastrophic AI; Facial Recognition perils; and the need to find HOPE in all of it.
