In this installment of Transgender Woman Talking, Elle hosts a conversation with Mary Almy and Cheryl Shaver about a documentary they created together. Cheryl is a filmmaker and director who spent time with Mary and her loved ones to explore and present an intimate portrait of her world. In the episode, Elle talks with the two of the importance of story-telling, the poignancy and power of Mary's experiences, and what we expect yet ahead. The film "Mary: Her Journey from Pain to Purpose" is currently in the film-festival pre-release phase and so has limited availability publicly. However, interested folks can reach out through instagram or Cheryl's website (below) to potentially host a screening or talk more about how to share the project. In some ways, the film resonates with Will Ferrell's work on "Will and Harper" a Netflix documentary about the celebrity's relationship with an old friend and colleague who transitioned later in life. Hi all you good people. This week, I come to you from a cavas wall tent in rural British Columbia. Has my audio quality suffered? Yes. Has my mental health improved drastically? Also yes. My superhero mom joins us again today to talk swashbuckling femmes that history and cultural narratives forgot. We traverse some serious moral grey area, entangle myth and fact, and muse about accepted gender roles and how they're manipulated by historical (and modern storytellers). I get to chat with LaVelle Ridley (University of Michigan) about her doctoral research on black trans life narratives in this one and I must say, she's a tonic. From important observations on the role of storytelling in political and community activism to the deeply personal process of healing that appropriate representation can initiate, LaVelle covers it all. She's a scholar, an activist, a pisces (hell, yes!), a creative writer, a mermaid, and an absolute delight to talk to. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing The Dead Deads over Zoom video! Nashville-based rock band The Dead Deads are cherry-picking everything good about grunge, hard rock, indie, classic metal and punk, and creating memorable and fun alternative music for rock fans across generations and genres. They are that “up-and-coming” band that touring artists have known and loved at first sight. They’ve been named by many of their own heroes including Paul Stanley and Eric Singer (KISS), Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Tom Petersson (Cheap Trick) Corey Taylor (Stone Sour/Slipknot), and Shaun Morgan (Seether) as one of the most refreshing new bands touring today, and they have conjured a wildly engaged fan club—The Dead Corps. With X’s painted over their eyes, the band and fans conjure a rebellious return to fun, freedom and true fandom.McQueen on drums, Daisy on bass and Meta on guitar are a power trio with monster tone and raw rock energy. Heads bang as classic metal and grunge riffs are coaxed into pop hooks. Innocent child-like vocals are interrupted by screams and the occasional brutal growl, as finely crafted wordplay forces unexpected stops and odd time signatures into submission. The unexpected becomes the earworm. The Dead Deads explore sounds from 90’s bands like The Pixies and Sonic Youth, to modern rock like Cage the Elephant and The Killers, all while keeping their grunge/punk rock roots. They name Failure, Bjork, Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult, NOFX, Pavement, Pink Floyd, Queen, Weezer, Helmet, Cream, Beck and The Pixies in amongst their hugely diverse list of influences. In a relatively short time, the band has played 4 cruises, done over a dozen US tours, two Canadian tours, and enlisted thousands of faithful Dead Corps fans. Seether, Bush, Chevelle, Stone Sour, Halestorm, Skid Row, KISS, 10 Years, and many others have invited The Dead Deads on tours as support.Notable past releases include both a live and a studio album, and 7″ split. The live album called The Dead Shall Dance, was recorded at The Cowan in Nashville, TN creating such buzz that Dead Corps flew in from all over the world to have their voices heard on the record which turned out to be the best example to date of the range, skill and growth of one of the touring world’s favorite rock bands. “Sketches and Animation” was released in early 2018. This double EP included five fully-produced bangers with Matt Mahaffey (sElf) on the controls, as well as stripped-down acoustic versions of the same songs produced by Brian Carter. Easter eggs for fans abound in this inventive sampler. The single “Ghosts” was added to Spotify’s New Rock playlist. In October 2020, The band released their debut single, “In For Blood” from the forthcoming album, “Tell Your Girls It’s Alright”, which is slated for an April 2021 release. The single has received a ton of positive feedback from fans and critics alike plus 500k streams in 3 weeks. It even landed them on the cover of Spotify’s “New Noise” editorial playlist as well as 3 other editorial playlists (Fierce Femmes, All New Rock, Rock This). Apple Music included the single on their “Breaking Hard Rock” and “Breaking Rock” editorial playlists, as well as Amazon Music’s “Fresh Rock” and “Breakthrough Rock”. We want to hear from you! Kama’s work is grounded in the exploration of justice, love, healing, decoloniality, hybridity, cosmopolitanism and self- and collective-empowerment. Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr

Brenna and Joe have patched up their differences and just in time, because they find themselves locked up with the Gladers, a bunch of annoying, mediocre (mostly) white boys from James Dashner's 2009 dystopian YA, The Maze Runner and Wes Ball's 2014 film adaptation, starring Teen Wolf break-out Dylan O'Brien. Brenna is firmly displaced with both texts unwillingness to explain the need for an all-male society and for their poorly reductive use of women. Joe is more willing to embrace the action sequences of the film, but finds the endless unanswered questions of the book and its abrupt cliffhanger a lazy attempt to goose sales. Plus: both are angered at the crappy allusions to both Lord of the Flies and, more significantly, Watership Down which is one of Brenna and Joe's favourite YA texts and not one to be messed around with. In Homework: Brenna eulogizes the end of The Amazing Squirrel-Girl comic, but offers hope for a new writer of Ms Marvel (prompting a general discussion of Disney & corporate conglomeracy). Joe, meanwhile, gushes about Kai Cheng Thom's Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars: A Dangerous Trans Girl’s Confabulous Memoir and catches up on reader mail, one of which prompts an apology and calls for education. Andrea Lawlor's debut novel Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl has a protagonist who can change his body at will, creating a narrative that explores space between male and female without relying on established transsexual narratives. This week, Juliet talks to Lawlor about the novel - one of the first by a trans/non-binary author on a major publisher - and the state of trans/non-binary literature more generally. Femme is a term used by many feminine-identified queer people from diverse and equally valuable backgrounds including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other queer folks. Femmes are fierce and use their voices to make themselves visible. Nevertheless, as femme women, they are often invisible to other queer people. They are often seen as heteronormative, apolitical, less radical and less queer in a community where being visible depends on being masculine or androgynous. This femmephobia in queer communities – this devaluation and stigmatization of queer femininity – is a form of misogyny that is rooted in dominant patriarchal culture   Keisha Watkins and Nkenge Jazz Burkhead are the co-founders of SMEARED LIPSTICK. The group is for lesbians of color who identify as femme (lipstick)! Their goal is to increase visibility and sisterhood within the femme community. Femme and Proud – we want to hear from you! How do you express your femme power in a patriarchal world? Do you feel invisible, disempowered? Is all this femme/butch talk much ado about nothing? Come on Fierce Femmes – let’s here you roar!!Okay Femmes Speak –Up Support-because Silence is not an OPTION!
