In this deeply honest conversation, Danielle shares the full arc of her journey into motherhood, from a medically managed first birth that left her feeling unprepared and disoriented, to a transformative freebirth experience that changed everything. She opens up about navigating a C-section, postpartum, medicalized motherhood, working in the OR, and the emotional process of undoing old beliefs while preparing for a VBAC and eventually choosing wild pregnancy and freebirth. What unfolds is a powerful story of self-responsibility, healing, and reclaiming trust in the body. Danielle reflects on the support that helped her shift her perspective, the intensity of labor, the beauty of meeting her baby at home, and the complex postpartum emotions that followed. This episode is a moving reminder that growth is not linear, birth is not one-size-fits-all, and every woman's experience deserves space, honesty, and reverence.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Introducing LEMONADE, my newest training program.Six months, live, with me. In this episode, Dr. Rebecca Dekker and Dr. Sara Ailshire examine the available evidence on planned unassisted birth, also known as freebirth, defined as intentionally giving birth without a qualified midwife or physician present. They explore why some people choose a planned unassisted birth, including previous trauma, distrust of the medical system, barriers to preferred care, and a desire for greater autonomy. Dr. Dekker and Dr. Ailshire also explain how freebirth differs from midwife-attended home birth, what research shows about planned community birth, and the safeguards a trained birth attendant can provide during pregnancy, labor, birth, and the newborn period. Finally, they discuss investigative reporting concerning the Free Birth Society, including allegations of misinformation and preventable harm associated with its community. Content Note: This episode includes discussions of stillbirth, maternal death, newborn death, birth trauma, and serious complications related to planned unassisted birth. Today's guest reached out to me just after welcoming her fifth baby at home, in what she described as a deeply healing birth. Her journey to this birth was shaped by four very different experiences before it, including a hospital birth, two previous homebirths and a traumatic freebirth with her fourth baby. Looking back, she doesn't blame freebirth itself for what happened. Instead, she recognizes that there were moments when she needed support and didn't seek it, an experience that profoundly changed the way she approached birth the next time around. For her fifth baby, she chose to birth at home again, this time with trusted support around her. What unfolded was the beautiful, attended homebirth she had hoped for and an experience that helped bring healing to the birth that came before it. In this episode, she shares what her five births have taught her about intuition, support, and knowing when to reach for help. She reflects on why she still believes in the beauty of freebirth while also recognizing that, sometimes, having the right person beside you can be lifesaving. Most of all, her story is a reminder that healing doesn't require us to erase or reject the births that came before. Each experience can shape us, teach us, and become part of the mothers we are becoming. Terra was the kind of kid who was terrified of hospitals and doctors. As a young woman, she never wanted to have children because of it. But when she learned about the option to homebirth, it immediately resonated with her, and her fears began to subside. What followed was an unexpectedly long journey to conception. During that time, Terra immersed herself in birth podcasts, and through hearing other women's stories, she gained greater clarity about the birth she wanted. Eventually, she decided she would freebirth. Terra welcomed her first baby at home with her husband and in-laws by her side. She says it was especially meaningful to have her mother-in-law witness the experience, having experienced only highly medicalized birth herself. Watching her grandchild enter the world in a peaceful, undisturbed setting became more than the birth of a new baby - It was an opportunity to rewrite a family's birth story. In that room, healing didn't happen in just one generation; it rippled across several. If you love the show, I would greatly appreciate a review on Spotify or Apple Podcasts! Today on The Natural Birth Podcast we have Lonneke. This is her 2nd time on the podcast. Her first episode is one of our top 10 episodes of all time called “The Magic of Surrendering to Birth”.Lonneke is an intuitive mama of three children from the Netherlands. Her first birth awakened such a deep inner knowing that it transformed her life entirely. She went from being a military officer to an herbalist, and built an apothecary especially for mothers. All of her children were born at home with just her husband present. With each birth, she dove deeper into her intuition, which ultimately led her to a wild pregnancy for her third child. She received the clear message that her daughter did not want to be born in water, which brought a new experience after two previous water births.Curious about Lonneke? Australia correspondent Annika Smethurst looks at two birth tragedies that have put "freebirths" in the spotlight.
In this episode of The Baby Tribe, Afif speaks with Irish Times journalist Ellen Coyne about her reporting on the rise of freebirth in Ireland: giving birth without a midwife, doctor or trained medical professional present. Ellen discusses what led her to investigate the movement, the concerns raised by senior midwives, the lack of clear data around unassisted births, and how online communities can frame freebirth as empowering while failing to fully engage with the risks. After the interview, Afif and Anne debrief the issue from neonatal and obstetric perspectives. They explore why some women may feel drawn away from maternity services, including previous trauma, poor communication, lack of continuity of care and fear of intervention. They also examine the role of social media, doulas, birthkeepers and unregulated advice in shaping decisions during one of the most vulnerable times in a woman's life. This is not a conversation about shaming women. It is about safety, autonomy, trust and accountability. Birth trauma is real. Consent matters. But real empowerment is not being left alone with risk. It is having accurate information, respectful care and skilled support available when things change. Birth is not a purity test. There is no gold medal for suffering. https://www.irishtimes.com/health/2026/06/06/free-births-in-ireland-concern-grows-for-women-choosing-births-without-medical-help/ Learn more about your ad choices. After more than a decade working inside the education system, Ally shares the deeply personal journey that led her to walk away from not only her career, but her prior beliefs, identity and the structure she had always known.Ally touches on regulation techniques for children in school and for parents homeschooling, partial enrolments and half days, the realities of 'learning support' dynamics and funding within the system and the moment she spoke aloud the decision that her own daughter was not going to enter the school system - when she was still in an active teaching role. What unfolds throughout this conversation is the realisation that Ally's own decision to leave the schooling system mirrors the exact threshold many parents are now finding themselves at with their children. The same fears arising around choosing differently. "What if I leave the safety of what everyone else is doing? What if I trust my own knowing over the system?"This conversation explore how questioning mainstream education often becomes a much bigger initiation into sovereignty, nervous system healing, self trust and redefining what security truly means for a family.Ally shares what she witnessed firsthand inside schools, from overwhelmed teachers trying to support children within rigid structures, to the increasing rise of labels, diagnoses, dysregulation and children struggling to thrive in environments they were never designed for. This episode opens a conversation around alternatives for children: homeschooling, traditional schooling, hybrid learning, conscious parenting, creating family rhythms and allowing children to remain connected to themselves while still honouring each family's unique path. "If I can, as a teacher myself, as an assistant principal, de-school myself, decondition myself enough to know that I don't need to follow the rules and what's possible, you can do it too." - AllyYou can find Ally at @allyyblanch_ And find Anita at @themidwitch
In this powerful and thought-provoking episode of MamaDoc BabyDoc, we dive into one of the most polarizing topics in modern maternity care: free birth—the choice to give birth without a medical provider present. Why are more women considering this path? We explore the real reasons behind the movement—ranging from prior birth trauma and mistrust in the healthcare system to a deep desire for autonomy, control, and a more intimate, undisturbed birth experience. But this conversation doesn't stop at understanding. As physicians who care for women and babies every day, we also share what your OB/GYN and midwife genuinely want you to know. Not from a place of judgment—but from a place of safety, experience, and advocacy. We break down the medical realities, the risks that often go unspoken, and the critical moments in labor where having trained support can make all the difference. This episode is about bridging the gap—between fear and trust, autonomy and safety, lived experience and medical insight. Whether you're expecting, supporting someone who is, or simply curious about the evolving landscape of childbirth, this is a conversation you won't want to miss.
This is part two of Kirsten's story. If you haven't already heard part one, check it out here. By the time Kirsten became pregnant with her second baby, her family had followed a dream and moved off grid to a tiny cabin in the Maine wilderness. Living without running water and facing a long, solitary drive up a mountain to reach their home, Kirsten felt fortunate to find a midwife willing to work with her under those circumstances. But each time she had a scheduled prenatal appointment, she found herself not wanting to go. Eventually, she made peace with the fact that she did not really want a midwife this time and began considering a more intuitive, independent birth experience. She spent her pregnancy immersed in nature and busy chasing her toddler, embracing the rhythms of off-grid living. Then one night, as the season shifted into spring and the whippoorwills sang, Kirsten welcomed her baby in a peaceful, easeful freebirth at home, surrounded by the sounds of the wilderness. When Kirsten became pregnant with her first baby, she and her partner knew they wanted a home birth. She hired a team of midwives to support her care, but her plans hit a bump when an ultrasound suggested her baby was too small. Deep down, Kirsten felt confident her baby was fine, and, after multiple follow-up scans, her baby's growth was shown to be on track. Kirsten went on to deliver at home as planned, surrounded by her midwives, her best friend, and her husband. But the immediate postpartum period was handled in a way that left her unable to speak about the experience for a long time. This is only part one of Kirsten's story. Tune in next week for part two! Mistrust in the medical system and barriers to access maternity care in rural communities has some women turning to ‘freebirth' — giving birth without the support of doctors and registered midwives. On Vancouver Island, a court case is highlighting a divide in the birthing community after a freebirth activist was accused of manslaughter in the death of a newborn in a home birth she allegedly attended.
Today on The Natural Birth Podcast we have Miranda.Miranda is a mother of 5 and soon to be 6 from the US, now living in Berlin. She has always believed in the power of pregnancy and birth and thinks the legacy of both is one of the great honors of being a woman. Miranda first came to natural birth 12 years ago primarily out of curiosity but has evolved into a woman who owns this rite of passage as a lesson for life. After her 4th baby she started the journey of becoming a midwife at the same university as me on the Gold Coast in Australia. She ended up not finishing as she decided to have her 5th baby and is now working as a doula in Berlin.Miranda has had 4 natural hospital births, 3 in Australia and one 1 in Israel and her 5th was a free birth with just her husband.3 of her babies were naturally conceived and 2 were IVF and her 6th baby currently in her womb was a natural conception. And, as Miranda shares in the episode, she believes SIBO - small intestine bacterial overgrowth which is a gut issue, was the cause of her unexplained infertility with her 4th and 5th needing the help of IVF.I love how Miranda can showcase for the women going through IVF that you don't have to continue with a highly medicalised pregnancy and birth which is usually the case.IVF does not in itself make a high risk pregnancy. After leaving an unhealthy relationship, Theresa made a solemn vow to herself: she would never again say yes when her intuition told her no, or no when it told her yes. So when she became pregnant with her first baby, she knew the conventional, conveyor-belt obstetric path wasn't for her. Instead, she sought out bodywork, worked with a naturopath, and developed a deep relationship with her body and her baby. The plan was to freebirth at home. But when labor began and she noticed thick meconium, she immediately knew the right thing to do was to face her biggest fear and transfer. Her twins (!) were born safely via cesarean section, but she experienced abusive treatment from medical staff that left her with lasting trauma. Recorded just about one year postpartum, Theresa is still moving through the healing portal. She shares beautiful reflections on trusting yourself, the nuances of engaging with the medical system, and reclaiming sovereignty. Women around the world are choosing to give birth without doctors or midwives, guided instead by influencer stories that celebrate "free birth" as empowering and transformative. The Free Birth Society, F-B-S, is a multimillion-dollar business that often advocates for women to take "radical responsibility" for their own births. A year long investigation by Sirin Kale and Lucy Osborne from The Guardian links the Free Birth Society to at least 48 cases of stillbirths, neonatal deaths and permanent injuries to mothers and their babies. Sirin Kale shares what their investigation uncovered for their podcast, The Birth Keepers. Link to the podcast is here
Emily's first pregnancy at twenty came in the midst of heroin addiction and an abusive relationship — and became her path to sobriety. She had an unmedicated hospital birth that, while fast, came with the usual interventions: coached pushing, an unnecessary episiotomy, and IV fluids that made breastfeeding a struggle. Years later, after a stint as an L&D nurse left her disillusioned with the system she'd once hoped to change, Emily chose a home birth midwife for her second baby. When labor came, something quiet and deep told her she wanted to be alone. She never called the midwife. Her son was born ten minutes after she woke her husband, and the midwife later told her, "You could probably just do this on your own next time." She took it to heart. Her third baby was a fully wild pregnancy — no scans, no appointments — and a surprise breech free birth that she navigated with calm and confidence. Her fourth, after gaining perspective from years as a postpartum nurse, led her back to minimal prenatal care and a free birth complicated by a face presentation. That experience shifted something in her. She still advocates fiercely for women trusting their intuition, but she's let go of any dogma, and says if another baby comes, she'll likely invite a trusted midwife to be with her. Send us a textIn this episode, I'm joined by Fenja, who shares her freebirth story with honesty, depth, and clarity. At a time when freebirth is being widely discussed — and often misunderstood — Fenja's experience offers a grounded and much-needed perspective on what informed, conscious birth preparation can look like.Fenja speaks openly about the extensive work she did during pregnancy: building physiological understanding, engaging in emotional and mental preparation, and developing a deep trust in her body and decision-making. Her choices were not made lightly. They were rooted in knowledge, reflection, and personal responsibility.During her pregnancy, Fenja chose to hire a doula — not as someone to direct her birth, but as optional, woman-led support. When labour unfolded, she recognised that what she needed most was solitude and privacy, and she chose not to call her doula to the birth. This decision was hers alone, made in the moment, based on what felt right in her body and nervous system. With recent media coverage and coroner's reports attempting to suggest that doulas are influencing women to make unsafe decisions, Fenja's story provides an important counterpoint. It clearly demonstrates that women are capable of making informed, autonomous decisions about their own births, and that doulas do not make decisions for women — they support them, when and if that support is wanted. This episode is not about persuading anyone to freebirth. It is about respecting women's capacity to prepare deeply, think critically, and choose consciously.Fenja's story is thoughtful, grounded, and a deep reminder that birth choices cannot be reduced to headlines or assumptions. You can find Fenja and her work at helikraft.co.ukOn Instagram @heilkraftosteopathyIf you love the podcast and would like to support it, then please use the link to 'buy me a coffee' - https://bmc.link/sallyannberesfordIf you would like to buy a copy of either of the books that accompany this podcast please go to your online bookseller or visit Amazon:-Labour of Love - The Ultimate Guide to Being a Birth Partner - click here:-https://bit.ly/LabourofloveThe Art of Giving Birth - Five Key Physiological Principles - https://amzn.to/3EGh9dfPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth' - Black and White version https://amzn.to/3CvJXmOPregnancy Journal for 'The Art of Giving Birth'- Colour version https://amzn.to/3GknbPFYou can find all my classes and courses on my website - www.sallyannberesford.co.uk Follow me on Instagram @theultimatebirthpartner Book a 1-2-1 session with Sallyann - https://linktr.ee/SallyannBeresford Please remember that the information shared with you in this episode is solely based on my own personal experiences as a doula and the private opinions of my guests, based on their own experiences. By most standards, Keelee had a straightforward first birth experience with a midwife at her birth center. But something about it troubled her enough that she wanted to debrief the birth afterward—and when she did, the midwife said something shocking. This sparked a deep dive into the world of freebirth, which she soon came to believe was the only "right" way to give birth. She even enrolled in a radical birthkeeper school, convinced she wanted to support women outside the medical system. But the first birth she attended was a humbling experience that ended in a transfer and a cesarean section. This prompted Keelee to step back and reconsider, realizing her belief in freebirth had become too dogmatic. Welcome to the no spin podcast. In today's episode, we're tackling a subject that's gaining traction but carries significant risks: the freebirth and wildbirth movement. We'll explore the rising trends of unassisted childbirth, where individuals choose to forgo professional medical care during labor and delivery- or during the prenatal period altogether, and the potential devastating outcomes associated with these practices. Join us as we unpack the motivations behind these choices, the lack of evidence supporting their safety, and the serious harms that can arise for both parent and baby. We'll be examining medical guidelines, and real-world consequences to provide a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of this complex issue. It's a balance between patient autonomy, advocacy, and potentially allowing an atrocity. Listen in for details. 1. Today on The Natural Birth Podcast we have VickyVicky is a stay at home mama from South Wales, UK.She's a former midwife who had a deep rooted fear of entering into the maternity care system and actually never did after she completed her studies.Today she supports women on their journey back to health through Ayurvedic lifestyle coaching and Nutritional Therapy. She caters for women's wellness retreats and run workshops on natural health and breast massage. She has a passion for helping women reconnect with the wisdom they already carry, to feel empowered, thrive, and truly take ownership of their well-being. When becoming pregnant herself she felt that the only way to achieve a natural birth was to relearn what birth is supposed to look like in the wild. Her pregnancy was spent developing her intuition, facing her fears and was guided by a deep trust in nature and the wisdom of the body. She decided to freebirth her baby at home. Equipped with both the scientific evidence and her intuition behind her, she knew it was not only safe, but the right path for her. She had a small space to navigate, living in a self built tiny house, which she solved by having the water birth she had dreamed about in a bell tent in the woods on Halloween morning. Send us a textEmily shares two unforgettable and very different birth stories: an unmedicated hospital induction with Pitocin, and an unplanned free birth at home. In her first birth, she transferred late in pregnancy under New Hampshire's “two high readings” rule for blood pressure. With a Foley balloon, Cervidil, and the lowest possible Pitocin drip, she labored quietly on all fours, declined unnecessary interventions, and delivered under the fetal ejection reflex—so calmly that all the nurses and doctors from around the maternity ward gathered to witness a rare physiologic Pitocin birth without an epidural. Her second birth brought the perfect contrast: a planned home birth that stalled, restarted after midnight, and ended an hour later with three strong pushes before the midwife could arrive. In this episode, we explore how to choose hospitals based on cesarean rates, what to know about induction protocols (low and slow, and when to stop Pitocin), gestational hypertension vs. preeclampsia, recognizing white-coat hypertension, and why mental training may be the most powerful tool in birth.**********Check out all our sponsor offers here: Needed

What happens when you choose a normal birth with twins? In this episode, I speak with Nicole, a mother from South Africa now living in the U.S., who chose sovereignty in one of the most medicalized and “high-risk” experiences imaginable: an identical twin pregnancy. From the very beginning, she was met with fear-based narratives—warnings of stillbirth, premature labor, and twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. But after enduring traumatic experiences in hospitals and with midwives, Nicole knew she would not birth her twins within the system.Instead, she underwent a profound process of deconditioning and committed to trusting her body. With the steady support of her husband, a Radical Birth Keeper graduate, and a community of women walking this same path, Nicole carried her twins to 40 weeks and welcomed them at home, in embodied sovereignty.Nicole shares the raw reality of holding responsibility for twins outside the system: the constant conversations about risk, the deep conviction it took to turn away completely, and the profound freedom of reclaiming birth on her own terms.Inside this episode:What Nicole witnessed in the hospital that made her vow never to returnHow she carried her twins to full term, trusting her body's wisdomThe support she found in a community of sovereign mothersWhat labor with twins looked like at homeThe double standard of blame when outcomes differ at home versus in the hospitalThe freedom and healing that come with birthing twins in sovereigntyTimestamps:[00:00] Introduction[02:59] Two miscarriages and lack of support and answers from the medical system[07:05] Receiving news of a third unviable pregnancy and deciding not to take the pill[09:02] Discovering that the medical system was wrong about her third pregnancy, and that her baby was alive and healthy in her womb[11:19] Birthing her first son in a birthing center with a midwife, forced interventions, a fourth degree tear, and newborn separation[21:36] Postpartum hospital trauma, overreactions and threats[25:15] Another miscarriage and humiliating hospital treatment[32:13] Finding out she was pregnant with twins, midwife refusing to provide care, and choosing freebirth[1:00:00] Freebirthing her twins at home with her husband and birth attendant presentIf you want to connect more with Nicole, follow her on Instagram.Find more from Emilee on Instagram, YouTube and the Free Birth Society website.Disclaimer: Free Birth Society, LLC of North Carolina shares personal and educational stories and experiences related to freebirth and holistic care. What happens when you see behind the curtain of labor and delivery? In this episode, I speak with Rylee, a young mother who chose to freebirth her first child after working inside the hospital system. From the vantage point of the “business of birth,” Rylee began to question everything she thought she knew about pregnancy. That unraveling brought her face-to-face with the deep dissonance between what she was told was “right” and what her body knew was true.Carrying that knowing into her own pregnancy, she made the radical choice to step away from the system entirely. Rylee shares what it was like to work as a self-described “fearmongering phlebotomist,” to quit, and then to bring her baby earthside in her own power. Her story is one of unlearning, reclaiming, and discovering the strength that emerges when a woman finally trusts herself. What You'll Hear:Why Rylee walked away from working in a hospitalWhat it feels like to stand up to doctors and refuse routine proceduresThe hidden link between hospital “convenience” and high C-section ratesWhy even trusted OBs and familiar clinics can still feel wrongHow she found her rhythm and delivered her baby in a birth pool at homeThe joy of her birth: laughing while pushing, with her mother and husband as witnessesTimestamps:[00:00] Introduction[09:03] Starting to question the hospital method and learning about freebirth[15:45] Climbing out of the system and trusting her instincts[19:57] Defying the doctors and reclaiming her sovereignty[28:15] Realizing that the hospital is a business[36:37] Choosing who she wanted at her freebirth[38:14] The psychedelic moment before labor began[45:40] Moving into the second day of labour, feeling tired, and calling her Mom[48:47] Exhausted, in a trance, and roaring through the portal of labor[51:32] Finding her rhythm and bringing her baby earth side in the pool[58:19] Getting out of the pool, the first cuddles, and delivering the placentaIf you want to connect more with Rylee, follow her on Instagram.Watch Rylee's birth video here.Find more from Emilee on Instagram, YouTube and the Free Birth Society website.Disclaimer: Free Birth Society, LLC of North Carolina shares personal and educational stories and experiences related to freebirth and holistic care. Today, we break down the pain-free-birth movement and explore its theological roots. Can women truly experience a pain-free birth? Where did this concept originate, and why is it so controversial? In this episode, we dissect the claims made in the book "Supernatural Childbirth" by Jackie Mize. Mize encourages women to believe that with enough faith, they can overcome fear and pain, commanding their bodies to obey their faith declarations.
