Most North Americans recognize the German Shepherd Dog and similar breeds as law enforcement, military, and search and rescue dogs. While the German Shepherd never quite caught on here as a farm and ranch worker, the “shepherd” in its name should tell us something about its history, and Ulf Kintzel is here to tell us about its present and future as a working stockdog. Louis Donald is one of the world's foremost experts on the German Shepherd breed.Louis has had a lifelong passion for the German Shepherd dog.At the young age of 26, he was elected President of the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia and held the position for 2 decades. Louis became a fully licensed working dog judge in 1974, and in 1978, he became Australia's first fully licensed SV German Shepherd Dog Judge, and at the time, the youngest SV judge in the world. His knowledge about the breed, to put it mildly, is vast.He is a true dog man with a passion for German Shepherds. In the podcast, we discuss the origins of the German Shepherd dog, how the division between working and show lines occurred, problems facing the German Shepherd Dog breed in present day, and some of the deepest and darkest secrets of the German Shepherd dog lineage going back to some of the breeds most heralded studs. The 3 hours we talked absolutely flew by and we still had more to talk about, but we agreed to save it for another episode. Margery Good on the Deep Character of Sealyham Terriers Margery Good joins host Laura Reeves to share her deep love of her beloved Sealyham Terriers, breeding, grooming and the importance of learning. Good started in obedience with a German Shepherd Dog. [caption id="attachment_12141" align="alignleft" width="337"] Margery Good with BIS/BISS CH Goodspice Efbe Money Stache[/caption] “I entered in obedience, but then I spent my day at the dog show stalking the handlers that were sharing their conformation dogs and trying to learn as much as I possibly could, without getting in their way. Peter Green, Bob and Jane Forsyth. Bill Trainor. People that were at the very top of their careers in those days, and I would spend as many hours as I could watching and trying to learn. “Well, I watched a lot of their grooming at their setups and how they handled each dog on the tables and putting them on and off the table. how they brushed them, what direction they use or what tools they picked up. Except for the Forsyths, the handlers were only showing like 6-7 dogs in the show and they'd do some trimming the shows. "So I'd watch how they tweak the trim before they take them in the ring. And then with like the Afghan hounds and Poodles I watched, how did they brush the hair? How did they pick up the hair they weren't brushing so that they could get from their skin to the tip of the hair. So I picked up a lot of learning from observing how they prepared the dogs. And then I'd go and watch them actually showing the dog. I actually spent more time behind the scenes than by the rings. Speaking to the challenge of trimming Sealys, Good said “I do try very hard to breed dogs with coats that normal groomers and average dog owners, if they apply themselves, they can work and have their successful finish to them. I also spend a lot of time helping people at shows or at my place or wherever I am to help them tidy up their trims and show them a new technique that they haven't tried or encourage them to keep going until they get it right. “Now that we have things like cell phones, I say take pictures, send me pictures, I will critique your trim. I work with people, they're 12-15 hours away. If they send me pictures, I will help. And it works. Sealyham Terriers – Generous, Big Dogs in Small Package [caption id="attachment_12140" align="alignright" width="408"] Stache sparring, showing the stand up character of the breed.[/caption] “They're so generous. And all you need to do is ask and they will say what can I do for you. They're very strong, sturdy, compact little dogs. They are big dogs just in a small package. They have very strong personalities. Their characters are very deep, as opposed to some of the other terrier breeds, whose characters are rather shallow. Which some people like. But it's not for me. I like the depth of the character that I see in Sealyhams. Classic Breeding Advice “(Starting out) I was able to breed forward and not have a lot of faults that I had to breed away from. I had very good virtues to start with. In a breeding program, you need to concentrate virtues and minimize faults when you breed. So, you need to be able to see what a stud dog can give in virtues and what faults you might get and not double on what you have in your female. See what her strengths are and not double on the faults that they have. So, generation after generation, you do that. To the point of Stash, (GCHG CH Goodspice Efbe Money Stache, Terrier Group winner at the 2022 AKCNC) who's the culmination of 50 years of my breeding." Listen to the entire conversation full of passion, insight and charm.

Susan Shahoda is a lifelong dog lover who has devoted much of the past 15 years to volunteering with Westside German Shepherd Rescue in Los Angeles, CA. But don't let the name fool you – Westside rescues dogs of all shapes & sizes and adopts to families throughout the continental U.S. and Canada. In fact, Westside is celebrating 20 years and 20,000 dogs finding loving homes! What should potential adopters look for in a rescue organization? Why are those adoption applications so long? How do rescues determine which dogs get chosen? And what do rescues really think about people who can't keep their dogs anymore? Susan gives us a true behind-the-scenes view of running a rescue organization. Susan also shares her thoughts on the unsung heroes of the animal welfare community, the surprising benefit of the Nextdoor App, the best & the hardest parts of rescue and what keeps her going even in the tough times. We'll also learn how Susan's life has been touched by Laurel, a special needs German Shepherd Dog who suffers from permanent neurological damage after contracting Canine Distemper virus. In the season of giving, your generosity is appreciated by organizations like Westside German Shepherd Rescue and your local animal shelter and rescue groups. We work with many dogs with varying degrees of anxiety. For example, my favorite breed, the German Shepherd Dog, is supposed to be naturally unshockable. This is based on the breed standard and origination. However, I work with many German Shepherd Dogs because they are fearful in some way. But fear isn't just rampant in German Shepherd Dogs. This affects all dog breeds in the United States. I recently worked with a Belgian Malinois who bit people coming to the home out of fear. This is equally disturbing. Fear and anxiety in dogs are some of the most common challenges we are contacted for. The reasons for this fear epidemic in dogs are multifold. In this episode, we briefly touch on the common symptoms and cases of fear and then discuss in detail what happens in a dog's brain when they are afraid. We also discuss how helping dogs with their fear works and what limits we must accept. Visit the Podcast Episode Page for additional content and a list of episode references. Johannes Grewe is a Körmeister and Avi and I ask some tough questions on the topic of showline and working line German Shepherds. The questions of what makes for a good German Shepherd and what dogs should we be breeding is always at the top of everyone's list. Talking with Johannes is talking to one of the foremost experts on the breed. Johannes has bred, trained, judged and lived with German Shepherds for most of his life. In a world fraught with such conditionality there are few things more unconditional than the love of a dog. It's probably one of the main reasons folks get them. The lessons we get to learn from the kind of connection we have with our dogs can, if we stay present to it, be life-changing. Relationship and Marriage Coach Jen Williamson knows this first hand. The work she does is about creating powerful bonds through the work she and her husband do with The Unshakable Family. After achieving the “American Dream”, Jen and her husband realized that something was missing, something big. So they ditched it all, moved to Costa Rica, and have found an entirely new way of focus that has catapulted their lives (and the lives of their kids) forward. She's grounded in a sense of leadership with the strong structure she learned from years in the US Navy. That emotional immunity is built through strong habits and a clear mindset. That connection doesn't equal time spent but quality and that when it comes to connecting with others there's a clear sense of how things get to be in order to flow. All these lessons may have been strengthened by her time in the Service and as a coach, but the foundation was laid, thanks to a German Shepherd Dog named Fage. What does leadership actually mean in today's world? Good questions, right? That's what Cathy Brooks, thought. And it's why she created Talk, Unleashed – a new podcast of entirely candid conversations with fascinating people doing remarkable things. This weekly podcast will feature guests from arts and entertainment to business to technology to food to activism to politics (well, we'll see on that last one). Talk Unleashed invites these influencers to consider the things that have led them to where they are, the lessons they've learned, and how all those things can come together to create a better world. #JenWilliamson #UnshakableFamily #Startup #Coach #Entrepreneurship #leadership #TalkUnleashed #UnleashedConversation #UnleashedLeadership #FixYourEndofTheLeash

In this podcast episode, we meet some of the brave, tireless dogs and handlers who were an integral part of the harrowing events of 9/11 and the subsequent search, rescue, and recovery effort. When catastrophes occur, humans and dogs team up to perform dangerous and difficult tasks. Highly-trained working dogs and their handlers must commit to long hours in perilous situations to save lives and provide comfort. The recovery efforts in the aftermath of 9/11 are a testament to a dog's unique abilities, courage, and the therapeutic resilience that they generously share with us in times of need. Bonafide Bits: Apollo, a German Shepherd Dog, and handler Pete Davis were the first canine search and rescue team to arrive at Ground Zero. Golden Retriever Bretagne and handler Diane Corliss spent 10 days searching through the World Trade Center wreckage. Border Collie Sage worked recovery at the Pentagon and hurricanes Rita and Katrina before being deployed to Iraq. Trakr, a German Shepherd Dog, and handler James Symington rescued a woman from World Trade Center rubble 26 hours after she became trapped. Golden Retriever Nikie, Keeshond Tikva, with certified trauma responder Frank Shane and trainer Cindy Ehlers, provided comfort to weary human workers during the crisis. Featured Breeds: Labrador Retriever The sweet-faced, lovable Labrador Retriever is America's most popular dog breed. Labs are friendly, outgoing, and high-spirited companions who have more than enough affection to go around for a family looking for a medium-to-large dog. Labs are famously friendly. They are companionable housemates who bond with the whole family, and they socialize well with neighbor dogs and humans alike. But don't mistake his easy-going personality for low energy: The Lab is an enthusiastic athlete that requires lots of exercise like swimming and marathon games of fetch, to keep physically and mentally fit. Discover more about Labrador Retrievers at AKC's Labrador Retriever Breed Biography. German Shepherd Dog There are many reasons why German Shepherd Dogs stand in the front rank of canine royalty, but experts say their defining attribute is character: loyalty, courage, confidence, the ability to learn commands for many tasks, and the willingness to put their life on the line in defense of loved ones. German Shepherd Dogs will be gentle family pets and steadfast guardians, but, the breed standard says, there's a “certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships.” Discover more about German Shepherd Dogs at AKC's German Shepherd Dog Breed Biography. Golden Retriever The Golden Retriever, an exuberant Scottish gundog of great beauty, stands among America's most popular dog breeds. They are serious workers at hunting and fieldwork, as guides for the blind, and in search-and-rescue, enjoy obedience and other competitive events, and have an endearing love of life when not at work. Discover more about Golden Retrievers at AKC's Golden Retriever Breed Biography. Doberman Pinscher Sleek and powerful, possessing both a magnificent physique and keen intelligence, the Doberman Pinscher is one of dogkind's noblemen. This incomparably fearless and vigilant breed stands proudly among the world's finest protection dogs. Discover more about Doberman Pinschers at AKC's Doberman Pinscher Breed Biography. Bulldog Kind but courageous, friendly but dignified, the Bulldog is a thick-set, low-slung, well-muscled bruiser whose “sour mug” face is the universal symbol of courage and tenacity. These docile, loyal companions adapt well to town or country. Discover more about Bulldogs at AKC's Bulldog Breed Biography. Border Collie A remarkably bright workaholic, the Border Collie is an amazing dog—maybe a bit too amazing for owners without the time, energy, or means to keep it occupied. These energetic dogs will settle down for cuddle time when the workday is done. Discover more about Border Collies at AKC's Border Collie Breed Biography. Belgian Malinois The smart, confident, and versatile Belgian Malinois is a world-class worker who forges an unbreakable bond with his human partner. To deny a Mal activity and the pleasure of your company is to deprive him of his very reasons for being. Discover more about Belgian Malinois at AKC's Belgian Malinois Breed Biography. Yorkshire Terrier Beneath the dainty, glossy, floor-length coat of a Yorkshire Terrier beats the heart of a feisty, old-time terrier. Yorkies earned their living as ratters in mines and mills long before they became the beribboned lapdogs of Victorian ladies. Discover more about Yorkshire Terriers at AKC's Yorkshire Terrier Breed Biography. Keeshond These square, sturdy companions descend from the same ancient stock as other spitz types, such as Pomeranians and Samoyeds. Typically “spitzy,” Keeshonden have a foxy face, pointed ears, an abundant coat, and a plumed tail carried high over the back. In this podcast episode, we explore the dog breeds that ranked on both ends of the spectrum of AKC's statistics for breed popularity in 2020. Dog breeds say a lot about America. Popular culture, urban sprawl, and economics are some of the many factors that can influence people to choose one breed over another. Sometimes the rise of certain breeds can be linked to a canine character in a book, television series, or movie. But, remember, “most popular” doesn't mean “better.” We explore breeds at the top of the list and the “underdogs” at the other end of the list that share traits and purpose. Bonafide Bits A Labrador Retriever (No. 1) has topped the AKC's most popular list since 1991. In the late 1800s, the Golden Retriever (No. 4) was developed by Dudley Marjoribanks as the ideal gun dog. The Harrier (No. 190), a hunting powerhouse, is rare today but has been part of America since colonial times. The rare Chinook (No. 186) was bred with similar intent to the mischievous Siberian Husky (No. 16) and is the state dog of New Hampshire. Featured Breeds Labrador Retriever The sweet-faced, lovable Labrador Retriever is America's most popular dog breed. French Bulldog The one-of-a-kind French Bulldog, with his large bat ears and even disposition, is one of the world's most popular small-dog breeds, especially among city dwellers. The Frenchie is playful, alert, adaptable, and completely irresistible. Discover more about French Bulldogs at AKC's French Bulldog breed biography. Flat-Coated Retriever The Peter Pan of the Sporting Group, the forever-young Flat-Coated Retriever is a gundog of relatively recent origin. Happy, self-assured, and willing to please, a good Flat-Coat will retrieve a duck or a show ribbon with equal aplomb. A Flat-Coat will stand as tall as a Labrador Retriever, but in silhouette, they present a leaner, more elegant look. Dogdom's champion tail-waggers, Flat-Coats are among the happiest of all breeds. They mature slowly; some owners say that they never grow up at all, retaining a puppyish taste for rambunctious mischief into old age. This can be either delightful or exasperating, depending on your tolerance for such antics. This highly energetic breed requires lots of outdoorsy exercise. Discover more about Flat-Coated Retrievers at AKC's Flat-Coated Retriever breed biography. Boston Terrier The Boston Terrier is a lively little companion recognized by his tight tuxedo jacket, sporty but compact body, and the friendly glow in his big, round eyes. His impeccable manners have earned him the nickname “The American Gentleman.” Discover more about Boston Terriers at AKC's Boston Terrier breed biography. Cocker Spaniel The merry and frolicsome Cocker Spaniel, with his big, dreamy eyes and impish personality, is one of the world's best-loved breeds. They were developed as hunting dogs, but Cockers gained their wide popularity as all-around companions. Discover more about Cocker Spaniels at AKC's Cocker Spaniel breed biography. Beagle Not only is the Beagle an excellent hunting dog and loyal companion, but it is also happy-go-lucky, funny, and — thanks to its pleading expression — cute. They were bred to hunt in packs, so they enjoy company and are generally easygoing. Discover more about Beagles at AKC's Beagle breed biography. Poodle Forget those old stereotypes of Poodles as frou frou dogs. Poodles are eager, athletic, and wickedly smart “real dogs” of remarkable versatility. The Standard, with his greater size and strength, is the best all-around athlete of the family, but all Poodles can be trained with great success. Discover more about Poodles at AKC's Poodle (Standard) breed biography. Collie The majestic Collie, thanks to a hundred years as a pop-culture star, is among the world's most recognizable and beloved dog breeds. The full-coated “rough” Collie is the more familiar variety, but there is also a sleek “smooth” Collie. Discover more about Collies at AKC's Collie breed biography. Harrier Somewhat resembling a Beagle with a gym membership, Harriers are larger, more powerful hounds than their diminutive cousin but smaller than the English Foxhound, a breed used in their development. Standing between 19 and 21 inches at the shoulder, Harriers have the timeless look of a working pack hound: a short, smart-looking coat; low-set, velvety ears; an irresistibly sweet face; and enough muscle and sinew to endure a long day's hunt. A well-built Harrier will cover ground with a smooth, efficient gait. Discover more about Harriers at AKC's Harrier breed biography. Siberian Husky The graceful, medium-sized Siberian Husky's almond-shaped eyes can be either brown or blue and sometimes one of each and convey a keen but amiable and even mischievous expression. Quick and nimble-footed, Siberians are known for their powerful but seemingly effortless gait. Tipping the scales at no more than 60 pounds, they are noticeably smaller and lighter than their burly cousin, the Alaskan Malamute. As born pack dogs, they enjoy family life and get on well with other dogs. The Sibes' innate friendliness renders them indifferent watch dogs. These are energetic dogs who can't resist chasing small animals, so secure room to run is a must. An attractive feature of the breed: Sibes are naturally clean, with little doggy odor. Discover more about Siberian Huskies at AKC's Siberian Husky breed biography. Chinook Tawny-coated, no-frills Chinooks are muscular and substantial, with males standing as high as 26 inches at the shoulder. Chinooks were conceived as dual-purpose haulers, with the power of freighting dogs and the speed of sled racers. They are the picture of stouthearted dignity, with a kindly twinkle in their dark, almond eyes. Chinooks are calm, people-oriented dogs with a special feel for children. They are trainable workers who aim to please. Sledding, carting, obedience, agility, search-and-rescue work, and herding are a few pursuits they've mastered. Chinooks are not particularly busy dogs, but they need consistent exercise to stay in proper condition. Discover more about Chinooks at AKC's Chinook breed biography. For more information about a specific breed visit the breed's parent club or AKC.org. Shareables Most popular doesn't make one breed better than another but it does reveal some fascinating insights into people, trends, demographics, and in many ways America itself. The French Bulldog is made for the city which might explain why it's the number one dog in major U.S. centers from LA to New York.

Beauceron: Rustic Farm Dog and Living FenceOur Love the Breeds panel discusses Beauceron, the ancient French farm dog described as a “living fence” in their native country. [caption id="attachment_7723" align="alignleft" width="300"] Beauceron may be shown with cropped or uncropped ears. This is a litter with dam at center bred by Elaine Giannelli.[/caption] According to breeder Elaine Giannelli, in France, the Shepherd would go out to the field with his sheep and the Beauceron would go out like a fence and keep the sheep where they were supposed to be while they grazed … “The Beauceron was a farm dog so he did a lot of things besides just move the sheep… he would take the sheep out during the day to graze, move them to another graze and then bring them back home and then protect the farm in the evening,” said third-generation French breeder Eric Vavassori. [caption id="attachment_7727" align="alignright" width="300"] Beauceron were developed more than 600 years ago to serve as rustic farm dogs and a "living fence" to move stock to new pastures and keep them where they belonged.[/caption] Moving sheep and cattle required a substantial, hardy dog, the panelists noted. The Beauceron stands up to 27 ½” tall and is considered a stronger, lower key type of dog than the German Shepherd Dog or Malinois. “They definitely have an activity level,” Beauceron owner Sidney Wilcox said, “but they're not manic … they're not a Border Collie, they're not constantly go go go go go go go go go …. they don't have the focus, the intenseness of a Border Collie or [caption id="attachment_7724" align="alignleft" width="196"] Panelist Sidney Wilcox and her harlequin Beauceron.[/caption] Malinois, but they are high-energy with a sense of humor.” New Beauceron fancier Sara Reid agrees. “Never laugh at a Beauceron! They’ll just keep doing whatever made you laugh.” The Beauceron was accepted in AKC’s registry in 2007, but the history of the breed dates back centuries. “They say that when the French settled in Louisiana that they brought a couple Harlequins with them,” Giannelli said, “and that's where the Catahoula (Leopard Dog) got (the merle gene)… that was from way, way back when the French first came to Louisiana.” [caption id="attachment_7726" align="alignright" width="300"] Panelist Sara Reid with her Beauceron, Misha.[/caption] The breed has a strong personality, the panelists observed. It needs firm, fair and consistent training and above average amounts of socializing, they noted. “Temperament could be an issue,” Vavassori said. “Why? Because a long time ago, the Beauceron was a farm dog and he was on the farm only for protect the family and for manage the sheep. So, the dog was not socialized. Richard Lopaschuk on Form and Function, Education and Judging Richard Lopaschuk, an all-breeds judge from Canada, said his priority in the ring is form and function. “All these breeds have a specific function,” Lopaschuk said. “If the form doesn’t match what they’re supposed to do, that’s how I assess what I have in the ring.” Richard and Nancy Lopaschuk, 54 years married and involved in purebred dogs. Lopaschuk and his wife Nancy started in dogs 54 years ago with a German Shepherd Dog they showed in obedience. Like many other breeders, they competed in their first fun match, won a ribbon and were hooked for life. They bred GSD for 25 years, later moving in to Miniature Schnauzers, Cairn Terriers and most recently Papillons. The Lopaschuk family stayed deeply involved in breeding, showing, judging, founding kennel clubs and competing in performance events with their dogs. Health testing, Lopaschuk said, was always a priority for their dogs in breeding programs. One of their first Papillons participated in initial testing to develop a marker for PRA in the breed. Don’t be a drive-by dog enthusiast “If you want to get in to show dog scene,” Lopaschuk said, “sit around the ring from 8 a.m. til best in show. Observe as many breeds as you possibly can. Watch the breed you like for several days. Get a perspective. Decide whether you’re going to be compatible with that breed.” All-breeds judge Richard Lopaschuk from Canada judging best in show. The difficulty with people today, Lopaschuk noted, is that when the breed is finished, they go home. They have no idea of perspective regarding other dogs in the ring. “Novice handlers often have excellent dogs,” Lopaschuk said. “I don’t care how it’s handled. I sometimes see younger dogs that need to be trained. But I won’t *not* put up just because of the training, if the conformation is better.” Education is the key Lopaschuk said long time breeders and clubs need to educate anybody that’s interested in owning a dog, make sure they buy the right dog, and know what they have to do to develop a great pet. Special: Allison & Laura Handicap the Line Up at Westminster Kennel Club Special edition!! Allison & Laura jam on the Westminster Kennel Club show, the fabulous contenders and who may or may not rise to the top of the pack. Las Vegas oddsmakers have occasionally offered up a “line” on the Garden. But those are not Dog Show Divas! Pure Dog Talk brings you two of the sport’s long-time observers with input on who stands a good chance in the green carpet final seven line up this year. Whiskey the Whippet and King the Wire Fox Terrier are high on the list of the potential winners. The Havanese, Bono, is peaking at the right time but could be pushed by Treasure, the Papillion. The Border Collie, Slick and the new German Shepherd Dog, Tony, are set to duke it out in the herding group. A surprise appearance from Elsa the Old English Sheepdog could upset that applecart. Breed judging on Tuesday will make or break a lot of the group judging. Will Bean the Sussex Spaniel who won the group last year come back and play in BIS again? Or will the brand new English Setter, Penny, come on strong? Sporting is in play! Working group is being judged by Jimmy Moses. Questions about what Doberman will get to the group and what Boxer will win the breed have a lot to do with which dog could win the group. Once again, up in the air. Allison says, “Jimmy Moses will pick a solid dog, but what’s he gonna get to work with?” Jim Reynolds to Christine Erickson to Peter Green. Is this the fairy tale line up for King and Gabriel? Allison is going all Ws…. She’s putting her line up as BIS to the Wire Fox Terrier and RBIS to the Whippet. Laura has her heart and her money, long odds, on the Wire Fox Terrier and the Havanese as RBIS. Check out the Dog Show Divas with the best line on the best in show line up at Westminster Kennel Club on Pure Dog Talk! Vegas got nothin’ on us, baby! Support this podcast
Bob Frost is a longtime German Shepherd breeder and trainer based in Ohio. It's fair to call him one of the custodians of the breed and he is expert on all things German Shepherd Dog. I've invited him to talk about the breed, both purebred and shelter dogs. I am hoping to help people better understand these wonderful animals and somehow reduce the numbers that end up unwanted and in shelters and, sometimes, killed for lack of a home.
