We strip down and take a whirl on a lazy susan to generate our very own life-sized replicas! It's a dire situation, maman. And we have questions. Like who was on the other side of that machine when Korby made Andrea? Is it possible for an android to love? Why did Kirk grab the most phallic of rocks to wallop Ruk in the face with? We celebrate Kenny's birthday the best way possible: by watching Star Trek and Star Wars! We begin our journey into Ewoks. We also talk about how we engage with artificial intelligence (considering this week's episode of Star Trek does just that).Aspen talks about our relationship to AI and how it has evolved since the 1960s. Kenny talks about the deregulation of children's TV shows and how close Ewoks was to Care Bears. This week Dana and Dan discuss the episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of." The guys ponder the meaning of what it is to be human, talk (once again) about the poor furniture choices made on the show, and wonder (several times) about the stalactite. Hey, sometimes a stalactite is just a stalactite. Dana and Dan also pay tribute to Nichelle Nichols who played Lieutenant Uhura. She died this week at the age of 89 and was a fantastic human being. In this episode of Trekking Through Compliance, we consider the episode What is little girls made of?, which aired on October 20, 1966, Star Date 2712.4. After the Enterprise travels to the planet Exo III to investigate the fate of Roger Corby, two security guards, Matthews and Rayburn, are killed after beaming down. It turns out that Corby, known as the Pasteur of archeological medicine, has discovered the remains of an ancient culture. They were using machinery he had found, which creates androids. Corby begins implementing a dastardly plan by creating an android of Kirk to be taken to Minas 5, where he will start spreading androids throughout the galaxy. However, Corby kills his robot servant, Rok, who has remembered the equation "existence, survival must cancel out programming." This equation led Rok to realize that the same kind of clash between humans and androids which led to his civilization's demise centuries ago was becoming inevitable again and caused him to attempt to kill Corby. Corby then reveals he is an android. Corby destroys the remaining android and himself ridding the universe of Exo III androids for all times. Compliance Takeaways: Follow your compliance protocol if you create an exception; note in a documented form the reason. Opaqueness only leads to distrust. Transparency is the key. Star Trek TOS S1E09 What Are Little Girls Made Of
The Enterprise arrives at the distant frozen world of Exo III in an effort to search for Dr. Roger Korby, a brilliant scientist who has been missing and is presumed dead. But not only is Korby found to be alive and well, he takes Captain Kirk prisoner in an attempt to convince him of his bold plan to create a master race of immortal mechanical beings. “What Are Little Girls Made Of?” is an often-overlooked episode that effectively explores the concept of what it means to be human, and it ultimately succeeds as a compelling, provocative, highly-stylized and very well-acted episode. It’s also the first time that “Star Trek” examined the conflict of humanity versus machine (and, in effect, humanity versus itself), but it sure wouldn’t be the last. Help support her there for as little as $2/month to get it all.Barbara also does “Coronagram” commissions. Order one for someone you love- Barbara will send them a virtual song. More info is available on her website. Here's a link to the official Troubadours on Trek Spotify Playlist, where you can hear all the featured songs from every episode in one playlist (songs will be added as episodes air on Patreon):-Barbara's song pairing for this episode: "Paranoid Android,” by Radiohead.-Grace's song pairings for this episode: "Mr. Roboto," by Styx and "Robots," by Flight of the Conchords.-Barbara's featured song is "Frostbite," from her new album, Someday, Maybe Sooner.Corrections:Ted Cassidy died of complications following open heart surgery in 1979 (aged 46). André René Roussimoff (André the Giant) died of congestive heart failure in 1993 (also aged 46).I suspect that the episode with the “child android” that Barbara is thinking of is “Hero Worship” (TNG 05:11). In this episode, there's a child, Timothy, but he is not actually an android. He pretends to be an android, to cope with the trauma of being the only survivor of a tragic event. But eventually, with help from the Enterprise crew, reverts to healthy human little boy behavior. The only other example of a child or offspring android (before we get to the new Picard series- won't mention details here for the sake of avoiding spoilers) in Trek that I can think of is Lal, Data's “daughter” (TNG 03:16).The three episodes of the Original Series that do NOT feature Leonard McCoy are (this episode) “What Are Little Girls Made Of?” (TOS 01:07), “The Menagerie, Part II” (TOS 01:16), and “Errand of Mercy” (TOS 01:27).
In the third week of our Snow White Month, Drew and Cassie are here to discuss Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust. This 2017 novel switches perspectives between two characters: Mina, who learns that her magician father replaced her true heart with a heart of glass and eventually ascends to the role of queen in a kingdom of eternal winter, and Lynet, her stepdaughter, who is shocked to learn that she is a clone of her father's dead wife, created by the same magician using snow and blood. The story revolves around their relationship as their lives run parallel courses in alternating timelines, their hopes and fear entwining to retell a story we all know if a fresh and beautiful new way.Music: Through The Woods by Shane Ivers - https://www.silvermansound.com

He loves the Expanse series, Game of Thrones, Peter F. Hamilton, Jeff Vandermeer, and Neal Stephenson. He’s also likes NK Jemison’s series and Octavia Butler. Any ideas for some new author or series? Thanks so much! -Melanie 2. I would love some great winter fantasy books to curl up with over this holiday season. Living in Florida I don’t really experience a winter unless I travel, which is obviously not happening this year, so I get all of my snow feels from books. I loved Katherine Arden’s series and I already have Sisters of the Winter Wood on my TBR. I lean towards fantasy, but if you have a great sci-fi rec then that would be awesome too! Thanks so much, y’all are amazing! -Liza 3. Hi, This year for Christmas, my sister and I are buying each other books so she’s writing in to When in Romance to request a recommendation and I’m writing into y’all. I’m looking for something in the vein of Orphan Black, Ex Machina, Dollhouse and the Villains duology by V.E. Schwab. The best way I can think of to describe is: amoral people doing kind of terrible things in the name of science that brings up questions of humanity (but isn’t that just all sci-fi?) Anyway, I’ll put a link to my goodreads at the bottom but it’s kind of a mess so here’s a quick(ish) rundown: I think the only ones already on my radar are Gemsigns and Jurassic Park (even though it’s dinosaurs and not humans, I’m gonna give it a go.) Books I’ve read that seem like they would fit here include: -Never Let Me Go – tbh I probably would have liked this better if it had followed the people that ran the school instead of the kids. -Island of Dr. Moreau – obvious OB connection and it’s been years but I remember loving it. -Frankenstein and Brave New World – putting these together because both of them just weren’t what I was expecting, if that makes sense. -Mila 2.0 – again it’s been years and I remember it being fine but it was the same situation as Never Let Me Go. -Crystal Books Recommended The Poppy War trilogy by RF Kuang (trigger warnings: basically all of them, it’s really brutal) The Green Bone saga by Fonda Lee (Trigger warnings: mentions of sexual assault, suicide and self-harm) Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik Gemsigns by Stephanie Saulter The Psychology of Time Travel by Kate Mascarenhas (tw: self-harm, disordered eating, hazing) Vita Nostra by Marina and Sergey Dyachenko, translated by Julia Meitov Hersey The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune (tw: child abuse) Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse (tw: harm to children, graphic violence) Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas (tw: transphobia) Vagabonds by Hao Jingfang, translated by Ken Liu (tw: reference to suicide) The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo The Down Days by Ilze Hugo (TW: child abuse/death; CW: drug addiction, fatphobic language) Woven in Moonlight by Isabel Ibañez Riot Baby by Tochi Onyebuchi (all the trigger warnings) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This episode has all of the hallmarks of a classic Star Trek Episode: philosophy, romance, comedy, technobabble, twists, turns, and phallic stalactites. Lucinda and Ellie dive into this celestial adventure.
The modern sad girl, she is all of us, but in reality, she is none of us; just another impossible to achieve representation of what a woman's feelings should look like. So why are we still so obsessed with depictions of feminine woe? In this episode, Olivia and Ione discuss the construction of the sad girl; from the cultural artefacts we all grew up obsessing over, to the way they've permeated modern stereotypes, and how these characters have us all aspiring to become the perfect gorgeous, tragic, sad girl. While the manic pixie dream girl may be long out of cinematic fashion, her impact still remains. So how can we remove ourselves from patriarchal framings of our emotions? And moreover, where do these stereotypes stop, and our real feelings begin? Is it ever possible to escape the performativity of feminised sadness, or should we just embrace it? We'll be discussing all this and much more. This week, the one and only Tavi Gevinson is on hand recommending three things to get you through the week! All in aide of the ROOKIE PRINT SALE! On this episode of the Daily Coronacast, our hosts start with a conversation about the nation’s top health experts testifying before the Senate Health Committee on how to safely re-open the nation’s economy. Next, they talk about Trump storming out of yesterday’s press conference after two female reporters challenged him with a simple question about coronavirus testing. Then they discuss three Supreme Court cases being heard over the phone today that could all have big implications for how we interpret separation of powers and the ability of other branches of government to investigate the president. Finally, they close the show by telling us the interesting way this new format has changed some of the Justice’s work styles.

Whom Pods Destroy is back for an extra length special podcast reflecting on Star Trek: Picard. This ten-part CBS All Access series had more plot points than a Romulan attack fleet has torpedo tubes. What Are Little Girls Made Of? was the seventh episode of Star Trek's debut season to air, with a dramatic rescue attempt undertaken to recover a scientist lost for half a decade. In this episode Gerry and Iain take a look at the threat of AI overthrowing its creators and how to convince people your sex robot is actually a completely innocuous android lab assistant. Dr Roger Korby (Michael Strong) and his assistant Brown (Harry Basch) have been missing on the planet Exo-III for five years. Korby's fiancée Christine Chapel (Majel Barrett) is a nurse on board the Enterprise and joins Kirk in an away mission to recover the missing genius. On, or rather under, the planet they encounter unexpected resistance from a large android called Ruk (Ted Cassidy) who seems to operate in Korby's interests. The doctor's other help is a beautiful young woman named Andrea (Sherry Jackson), who draws Christine's ire. What Are Little Girls Made Of? was directed by James Goldstone and was written by Robert Bloch. Goldstone had also helmed Where No Man Has Gone Before, but this was his final Star Trek episode. Bloch, a correspondent of HP Lovecraft, wrote two further episodes, but is perhaps best known as the author of Psycho. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered whether it was worth Korby's efforts trying to convince Christine why he 'really' created Andrea; and the possibility of a naturally occurring phallic stalactite (phallictite?). The discussion continues in the comments below and please keep in touch with us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram where we're @trekpodcast. You can listen to the show here on the website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, Pocket Casts, TuneIn, Stitcher, Google or wherever you find your podcasts. What Are Little Girls Made Of? was released in 1966. It is 50 minutes long and originally aired on the NBC network. It can be viewed on CBS All Access in the United states, Netflix in the UK and is available on DVD and Blu Ray in other countries, including a comprehensive remastered set of all three seasons released by Paramount Home Entertainment.

Another journey through the ethics of science and loose plot threads! Featuring amazing android monologues, terrible costume designs, ancient medical equipment, and a very sad farewell to a main character who deserved better. Another warning on this episode: we talk at the end about some uncomfortable subject matter but this time involving the actors instead of the characters. Listener discretion is advised.

Hi, I'm getting married in November after a short engagement but I've already noticed that my fiancé and my mutual male friends have seemingly gone from referring to me by my name to calling me 'his bird' or 'his woman' (f* that s*). Any recommendations on books about maintaining your identity as a real human being after marriage? As a wise woman told me recently, "the only downside to getting married is that you become someone's wife". Cheers! --Nia 2. Hi Amanda and Jenn! I have a travel request. I'm going to Valencia, Spain this fall to visit a friend, and know very little about the region. My favorite way to get to know a new city is through historical fiction. Do you have any recommendations of historical fiction set in or near Valencia? --Ellen 3. I am in the process of ending a relationship of almost twenty years and I am trying to adjust to the idea of living on my own for the first time since my early twenties (I just turned 40). I am looking for books that might help me sort out my feelings about this process. Fiction or non-fiction is fine. I already have All Grown Up by Jami Attenberg on my TBR pile. I don't have kids and don't want them but stories that include kids are okay as long as the main focus is on the the adult. Thanks in advance. --Rachel 4. Hi ladies! We are looking for book recommendations for our co-worker and friend Emily. Her birthday is on October 11th and she is a huge fan of your show (she is the one who introduced each of us to it as well) and of all things books. She loves to read pretty much everything and anything. We would like to get her a book or two for her birthday and would love some recommendations. She really enjoys horror, true crime, mystery, and literary classics. Some books she has recently read and enjoyed are Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, Insomnia by Stephen King, and The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. (The three of us are planning on reading Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt per your recommendation from a previous episode, and are very excited by the way). Anything you could recommend would be great! Thanks in advance for your help! --Mallory and Jessica 5. Hey, Initially, I was asking for more books on race by #ownvoices because it's coming up in my classes so often, which are predominately white (and I am as well). What I'm now looking for is maybe some kind of history, memoir/biography, sociological study, really anything, that would be helpful in verbal combat with someone who is essentially the devil's advocate in a comment section, but believes in what he's saying. I know I won't change his mind but I'd like to have history and facts under my belt to help verbally kick his ass and destroy him. This MRA-dude, in a previous class, considered Janie sticking up for herself in Their Eyes Were Watching God 'terribly emasculating' for her husband and an awful thing to do to him. He is also *so sad* by our professor criticizing our country and most of our class agreeing with her (because apparently that's worse than Nazis - I made the mistake of creeping him on Facebook.) I own (but still need to read) They Can't Kill Us All, Rest in Power, and Warriors Don't Cry. I have read 12 Years a Slave, March Trilogy, Between the World and Me, and am anticipating We Were Eight Years in Power. I was originally thinking more along the lines of slavery and civil rights narratives, but now I think a better tactic would be to learn about the history of fascism and the constant fight for social justice. Any help is much appreciated, especially since he's not *technically* a Nazi and I can't just punch him during class. I love the show and have almost made my way through the all of the episodes! --Jane 6. This is a bit of a time sensitive request...One of my best friends has been married just over a year, and has recently found out that her husband wants a divorce. I really want to send her a book to help distract her... Any recommendations? She likes thrillers and YA fantasy. Bonus points if there's a strong feminist and/ or life will go on message. --Tina 7. I'm looking for some good Witch/female awesome themed books to get in the mood for fall and Halloween. I loved "The Discovery of Witches," "Daughter of Smoke and Bone" and "The Night Circus." I'd prefer something in the fantasy realm but am really open to anything I can drink with some hot apple cider! Thank you! --Radhika Books Discussed Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi Men Explain Things to Me by Rebecca Solnit When Women Were Birds by Terry Tempest Williams The Perfume Garden by Kate Lord Brown The Poem of The Cid by Anonymous Love Warrior by Glennon Doyle Melton Single Carefree Mellow by Katherine Heiny Sing Unburied Sing by Jesmyn Ward Blood of the Dawn by Claudia Salazar Jiménez The Moth Diaries by Rachel Klein Fen by Daisy Johnson White Rage by Carol Anderson The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander Gather the Daughters by Jennie Melamed (trigger warning for everything, basically) The Djinn Falls in Love, edited by Mahvesh Murad and Jared Shurin Brimstone by Cherie Priest Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor
