Marketing may involve running campaigns, tracking pricing, or creating brands, but let's face it—marketers spend a lot of time building decks. From pitching ideas and asking for funding to reporting results or outlining strategies, we rely on presentations to drive action. Yet, no idea gains traction if it isn't understood. That's why communication and presentation skills are essential. In this episode, Nancy Duarte shares her insights on crafting persuasive presentations and mastering effective communication. One of Martin‘s favorite "Great Talks" ever this morning on the Scoops Sports Network. A look at the Cardinals fanbase and if they've arrived at apathy. Martin says he sees more anger and sees that as a sign the fans still care. So should the team put the majority of money toward the farm system? What would fans say if the team stopped "competing" each year and instead tried to build from within? Martin talks about attendance at Busch and a dwindling TV audience. Thoughts on Walker, Gorman and former players like Carlson performing elsewhere now too. We talk about fan-favorite Adam Wainwright, clubhouse player interviews and more. Listen here thanks to Lou Fusz Automotive group:
Nick Riewoldt and Joey Montagna are joined in the studio by one of their favourite teammates Stevie Baker. "Bakes" is punching on with former Magpie Brodie Holland tomorrow night at the Melbourne pavillion. He's also in to discuss his favourite topic in the game, tagging. It's back in vogue, just as he forecast 12 months ago. Rooey believes the AFL need to stop being so "careful" when it comes to giving explanations, given the "bullshit radar" of society is higher than ever before. It's season over for Melbourne without Petracca and George Wardlaw is the man to lift the Roos off the bottom of the ladder. -------- Add the show to your favourites on LiSTNR: https://listnr.com/podcasts/footy-talk-australian-rules-podcast Listen on Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/footy-talk-daily-australian-rules-podcast/id1673652644 Listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1q5RUW2KTONUoP8KF3ZZHY?si=6798bf7f4a1540be See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this week's episode of the Rox Lyfe podcast my guest is Olympic legend, Eve Muirhead. Eve is a very special athlete. She's been to the Olympic games four times, and in the most recent in Beijing won the Gold medal in curling. What's more she is a scratch golfer, a champion bag piper, and since retiring from curling has taken on a marathon in an impressive time and podiumed at HYROX. Eve can seemingly turn her hand to anything and become incredibly good at it. She is amazing, she's inspiring, she shared so much in our chat (including lots about her mindset, her training, her Olympic experiences), and was such a pleasure to talk to. It's a truly fantastic episode with a true sporting legend. Follow Eve on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/evemuirhead/

Hey everyone - the Inside Influence team and I are taking an eight week sabbatical this winter (or summer if you're in the Northern Hemisphere) to generally reset, recalibrate and refill our creative tanks. For many of us, myself included, that means traveling across the world to see family members where it's been far too long between hugs.To keep you fueled while we're gone, we've traveled back through the archives and pulled out four of our favorite Inside Influence episodes of all time. I can also hand on heart say that each of these has, in some way, radically changed how I show up, lead and influence. If you're new to the Inside Influence crew, enjoy the ride. If you're a long-time listener, these are definitely conversations worth listening to twice.Stay safe and we'll see you back with a brand new season in August.Today's Guest In this episode I speak with Nancy Duarte – CEO and founder of Silicon Valley's largest and most successful communications firm, Duarte Inc. She's also a renowned author of ‘Illuminate', ‘Resonate' and ‘Slide:ology'. Her TED talk ‘The Secret Structure of Great Talks' has also been watched over 3 million times. She's been the master of the crazy world of presenting since way before speaking was cool, back in the days of projectors and transparencies, where you had to draw your idea onto a sheet of plastic. You'll LearnThe one pattern all the world's greatest speeches have in commonThe power of using contrast when building frenzy behind your ideaHow to create action on the back of any presentations by ‘illuminating' a new pathWhy we sabotage our own ideas – and how to let the struggle transform usSo, think of this as an absolute masterclass in how to convey an idea in its most potent form. “Maybe if my son had been more organized, we wouldn't be here today,” says Peter Bencivenga, who was a passionate teacher in the New York City public school system for 16 years, when he decided to take the leap into the EdTech space in 2008. He now serves as President of Operoo, which helps schools and other organizations achieve operational efficiency with their administrative communication forms. After seeing how many paper forms were getting lost at the bottom of his son's backpack, resulting in missed appointments and deadlines, he was shocked to find that schools were still using paper for their internal and external communications. Not only did this waste time, it left data inactionable, and sensitive information, such as teachers' direct deposits and students' orders of protection, too vulnerable. The only solution at the time, was to simply convert the paper to PDF, ignoring all of the rich data contained within them. Recognizing this problem, Peter, combining his knowledge of the education system with his passion for coding. He found a company in Australia called Care Monkey, which was doing with medical forms what he wanted to do in the education space. He expanded it to become what is now Operoo. Tune into this episode of Billion Dollar Tech, to find out the three most important components of a go-to-market strategy, what Peter looks for when entering into an acquisition, and the best way to develop and execute your exit strategy. Quotes: “I think a lot of people sometimes shy away from entrepreneurship later in their career. They're more secure and so forth, but I actually think that's where a lot of the big winners come from, Because you actually know the industry, you know the people, and you know what the problems far more intimately than you can looking from the outside in.” (3:52-4:11 | Brendan) “If we fail, life is not over. You leave a lot of security behind, but that's an entrepreneur. It's not secure. You're the risk taker. You're the ones that are actually building great, passionate businesses.” (6:57-7:10 | Peter) “Am I saving them time, am I saving them money, or am I improving outcomes? Those are the three things at EdTech, you could really build any product on.” (17:22-17:30 | Peter) “Day one is the passion, right? You really want to solve a problem. If all of a sudden you're solving a problem and thinking about an exit, you're not passionate.” (37:46-37:54 | Peter) “Build a great product that solves a pain point, and make sure you can explain it to a ten-year-old (40:29-40:35 | Peter) “You have to show, ‘Here is where you're currently at, but let me show you the future. And wait–here's where you're currently at, but let me show you the future.' So, you have to show that side by side.” (58:20-58-31) Connect with Brendan Dell: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brendandell/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/BrendanDell Instagram: @thebrendandellTikTok: @brendandell39 Buy a copy of Brendan's Book, The 12 Immutable Laws of High-Impact Messaging: https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780578210926 Connect with Peter Bencivenga:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/peter-bencivenga-5499a02?trk=public_post_share-update_actor-text Twitter: @PeterBencivengahttps://www.operoo.com/ Watch Peter's recommended talk, The Secret Structure of Great Talks by Nancy Duarte: https://www.ted.com/talks/nancy_duarte_the_secret_structure_of_great_talks?language=en Please don't forget to rate, comment, and subscribe to Billion Dollar Tech on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts! In their upcoming concert on Wednesday 7 July, classical luminaries David Greco and Erin Helyard perform their ARIA-nominated interpretation of Die schöne Müllerin (The Maid of the Mill). In Die schöne Müllerin, we meet a young man with thoughts of love. Just one glimpse of the miller's daughter at the window and he's smitten, but in vain, for she loves another. The song cycle is loved for its breathtaking complexity, intense originality and the rich melodies that carved Schubert's reputation as a genius of the lieder genre. Greco and Helyard's Müllerin brings fresh insight into Schubert's masterpiece while retaining the beauty that has made it so iconic. In this episode I speak with Nancy Duarte - CEO and founder of Silicon Valley’s largest and most successful communications firm, Duarte Inc. Nancy has spent the last 30 years immersed in the world of human story telling and has been behind the scenes of some of the most compelling speeches - or as she calls them’ impassioned pleas’ – that we’ve ever seen. Including Al Gore’s ‘An Inconvenient Truth’. She’s worked with the thought leaders of global brands like Apple, Cisco, Facebook, GE, Google, HP, TED, Twitter, the World Bank – I’ll stop now. She’s also renowned author of ‘Illuminate’, ‘Resonate’ and ‘Slide:ology’. Her TED talk ‘The Secret Structure of Great Talks’ has also been watched over 3 million times. This conversation weaves between her observations as a storytelling expert - and her experiences as a leader since pandemic began. Where, like many of us, her skills as a communicator have been stretched to a WHOLE new place. If you want to dive into my original conversation with her, which was one of the most useful explorations of the structure of epic presentations I have ever had. I believe it’s episode:Today we jump straight into…The stories that resonate in the messy middle of a crisisHow to tell the hard stories – and there’s no getting around the fact that there are hard stories to tell right now. And why not every story is for everyone – and that’s just ok.The three act structure – why it works - and how to use it in a virtual settingAnd her take on what the epic stories – and story tellers – of the future will look like. And believe me – this woman is behind the scenes at many of the tech companies that are literally rewriting the future of storytelling as I say this. So if she speaks – I listen. What I want you to reflect on her is not necessarily the tools – although please do. But her reflections as a leader of her own team. There are no obvious answers for anyone right now – and it’s easy to imagine that the experts must have it down - right? What I took from Nancy is that all the tools and strategies in the world don’t matter – if we can’t first find the courage to be seen. To show up in the chaos when we don’t have the answers. Or to stand in the fire alongside our people when it counts. On that note – I’m going to leave you in the very safe hands of one of my own personal mentors – Nancy Duarte. The Cinematography Podcast Episode 82: John Brawley John Brawley began his career shooting television series in his native Australia, coming to the U.S. to shoot the USA series, Queen of the South. John approaches each project with a “visual manifesto,” or a set of rules for yourself and the crew to follow with the camera, lenses, lighting, and color story defining what you're doing. John's recent project, The Great, stars Elle Fanning as Catherine The Great and Nicholas Hoult as Peter, the (not great) king of Russia. John worked closely with series creator Tony McNamara, a fellow Aussie who also received an Oscar nod for writing The Favourite. While shooting, John, Tony and the production designer determined that all the light sources be consistently candlelight, daylight, or firelight. Since it was Catherine's story, she was always in the center of the frame and her close-ups were always just a little closer. The UK is the home of period drama, but Tony McNamara wanted The Great to be “punk history” or satire, taking liberties with the Catherine The Great story, both in costuming and language. He and John also resisted the urge to do period cliché visuals- for example, they did not use any “sweeping” crane shots and avoided using excess smoke for atmosphere. The Great was just renewed for a second season. The final episode of season one of Great Talks at the APS departs slightly from the format of featuring an APS Meeting talk, instead featuring a paper appearing in a recent issue of Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society. We thought it appropriate to close out the season by having a conversation about two figures who loom large in the history of the APS and in the national imagination—Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. On this episode, Dr. Patrick Spero and Dr. John Van Horne discuss Franklin, Jefferson, and their contributions to the founding and early growth of the American Philosophical Society and other Philadelphia institutions. Dr. Van Horne is Director Emeritus of the Library Company of Philadelphia. His essay, "Two Chips off the Same Block: Benjamin Franklin's Library Company and Philosophical Society and the Saga of Their 275-Year Relationship," was published in the December 2018 issue of the Proceedings.
