Using the Hamilton musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda as a touchstone, we explore Eliza's happiest years, heart-wrenching tragedies, lifelong grudges, and many charitable works before her death at 96 years old. Most notably, we delve into her tireless efforts to house and educate orphans in New York City. Why did Eliza hate James Monroe for the rest of her life? Did she burn her husband's letters out of anger, or was it part of a cover-up? Did the Reynolds Affair actually happen, or was it an elaborate lie? Why did Benedict Arnold travel around Europe with a portrait of Alexander Hamilton? These burning questions and more will be answered as we ask, "Who tells your story?" when it comes to Eliza Hamilton.
Hamilton the musical tells us the story of Alexander Hamilton, a brilliant guy who had a fiery temperament and a cheating heart. Imagine being his wife and raising eight fatherless kids, resurrecting her dead husband's reputation, and being a tireless champion of widows and orphans. Plus, before her death at 97, Eliza Hamilton also became the toast of NYC and Washington. What a life!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today we have the immense pleasure of hearing from singer/actor Stephanie Jae Park who is currently playing the part of Eliza Schuyler/Hamilton on Broadway, New York, New York! She is an amazing singer and actor, who really gave us some insights into life on stage in a Broadway musical. Growing up loving musical theatre, I had mixed feelings about musicals like the King and I and Miss Saigon. On the one hand, it was great to see Asians on stage, but on the other hand, these plays aren't always uplifting to Asian culture or people. In 2015, Hamilton broke casting barriers by putting a diverse cast on stage regardless of who the character was historically. Hamilton the musical proved that audiences are fine with actors of all backgrounds playing characters on stage regardless of the role. In February 2022, Stephanie and her partner Voltaire Wade-Green released an album of original music as the duo Saffron Lips. I hope you give her music a listen, it's available on Spotify or Apple Music! And if you can get to New York, please head down to theater row to see Stephanie slay as Eliza! Look around, look around, how lucky we are to be alive right now! There's an awful lot of testosterone on History's Trainwrecks. I tend to think it's because men are far more likely than women to self-sabotage in a big way. But as Abigail Adams told her husband John, we should always "remember the ladies."Samantha Wilcoxson, author of the phenomenal Women of the American Revolution, joins me to talk about her book and see how the stories we've always been told about the women of the founding generation are really just the beginning. The most well known icons of our nation's history, the founding fathers, developed our Declaration of Independence, led us into the war for independence, and wrote the laws of our government. However, while the majority of people, including women, were excluded from those moments in history, their contributions to the forming of our nation were enormous. In a multi-part series, Civics Shorts focuses on some of the women journalist Cokie Roberts called “the founding mothers.” First up: the four wives of our founding fathers: Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Dolly Madison, and Eliza Hamilton.
Today we have a quote coming at you from our not-so-secret addiction, Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical- Hamilton! In this episode, we are sharing our love for this historical, artistic masterpiece as well as explaining some fascinating statistics that prove why it truly is the BEST time to be alive right now!
Stephanie Jae Park is a musical theater performer who is no stranger to both Broadway and touring. For starters, Park made her Broadway debut in The King and I which starred Broadway legend, Kelli O'Hara. Another Broadway company she was part of was War Paint with another Broadway legend, Patti LuPone. Stephanie made her touring debut in Cinderella alongside podcast guest, Audrey Cardwell. Just before the pandemic, Park was touring the country as the one and only Eliza Hamilton on the Hamilton tour. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jayme-starr/support

In Resurrection, the Risen Christ blesses us with life, and invites us to go and tell the story with the lives we live. When the Gospel of Mark tells the story of Resurrection – in language spare and startling – “He is risen! He’s gone ahead to meet you. Just like he said. Go and tell the others” – it invites us to write ourselves into the narrative.
Best known for her portrayal of Eliza Hamilton in the Broadway musical Hamilton – and the 2020 Disney+ film of the live stage recording – for which she was nominated for the 2016 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Notably, she originated three leading roles on Broadway at the same time: Hamilton, Amélie and Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812.
If you thought that you knew Eliza Hamilton because you watched the Broadway musical, well…you need to read Susan Holloway Scott's book, I Eliza. What makes good theater isn't necessarily accurate. There is a whole lot more to the Alexander/ Eliza story. Susan is a master storyteller weaving fact with fiction to weave a tale that's compelling. In this beautifully written novel of historical fiction, bestselling author Susan Holloway Scott tells the story of Alexander Hamilton's wife, Eliza—a fascinating, strong-willed heroine in her own right and a key figure in one of the most gripping periods in American history. It begins with Eliza first meeting her future husband and follows them until his death. My guest does exhaustive research to get the period details right. Susan was on the podcast back in episode 62. The link is in the show notes. You made it one of my top ten episodes. Now she's back talking about how she came to write about Eliza and shares a lot of details about the family. I've looked for an image of Eliza and so has Susan. She'd be a great addition to my Last Muster project of individuals who lived through the American Revolution into the age of photography. If you're looking to escape the present for the past, pick up I, Eliza, and transport yourself to the eighteenth century. Krystal Joy Brown is a singer, dancer and actor who made her Broadway debut in 2009 in Hair. She is best known for her portrayal of Diana Ross in the Broadway musical Motown: The Musical. Her other Broadway credits include Leap of Faith, Big Fish, and Hamilton, where she will return to the role of Eliza when the industry returns. She is also a two-time Adele and Fred Astaire nominee for best female dancer in a Broadway show. Krystal voices the character of Netossa in the DreamWorks/Netflix animated series She-Ra Princesses of Power, and her other TV appearances include the Disney film MAGIC CAMP (Disney+), NBC’s Law & Order: SUV, Hulu’s Deadbeat, ABC’s Castle, Disney’s Sydney to the Max, and most recently, Hallmark Channels "One Royal Holiday" with Aaron Tveit & Laura Osnes. Krystal is an avid activist in mental health, wellness, and social justice, and co-host’s the podcast, HOW WE DO THIS. Krystal grew up in the DC area, part of a family where many worked for the government - her mother for FEMA, her grandparents for the Pentagon, and her father as a police officer. For Krystal, being civilly and civically engaged was ingrained early on, and was always important. She recently hosted several virtual letter writing parties with VoteWriters.org, an organization that focuses on providing Voter ID assistance, which is now assisting Georgia voters for the runoff election. During our conversation Krystal illustrates how she has brought her activism to her art. While performing in Motown: The Musical, and in the streets protesting Treyvon Martin’s murder, she created a podcast called HOW WE DO THIS (a “female feminist political podcast”), which became a platform for conversations about mental health. And now, as part of the company of Hamilton, she takes an active role on the Hamilton Racial Justice Task Force. Krystal also champions self care. She opens up about going to therapy for the first time, and how it helped unlock her ability to be vulnerable onstage, and more deeply connect with audiences as Eliza Hamilton. In this episode, we talk about: Growing up in a politically active family Her reaction to the 2016 election AOC, and being “radical” Ancestral healing The Hamilton Racial Justice Task Force The importance of understanding and processing your internal life, before using it in your work onstage Connect with KJB: On the web: https://www.thekjb.com Twitter: @KrystalJoyBrown Instagram: @KrystalJoyBrown Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support us on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com Alan's personal Instagram: @alanseales Email me at feedback@thetheatrepodcast.com. Jenny Wheeler: But now here's Laura. Hello there, Laura, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Laura Kamoie: Hi. Thank you. I'm very pleased to be here and excited to chat with you. Laura Kamoie - best-selling author of early America - and writing romance as Laura Kaye Jenny Wheeler: Thank you. Look, you're a best selling author in two very different genres, urban romance and historical fiction. We're going to be mainly focusing on the historical fiction today, but which came first? The romance or the history? Laura Kamoie: Well, there are two ways to answer that question. I have been interested in history since I was a teenager, and so I actually went to university and graduate school for history and have a PhD in history and was a professor at the university when I started writing. That's part of the reason why, when I did begin writing fiction, I. wrote romance first, because history was my day job. So I was writing romance fiction for several years while I was still working full time as a university historian. At one point there came a time where I really just finally needed to make a choice between the two because my romance career had taken off. After I retired from teaching, that was when I decided that I also wanted to try writing historical fiction because history had been such a big part of my life that I didn't really want to leave that behind. Historical fiction gave me a way of keeping a foot in that world. America's First Daughter - the hidden story of Patsy Jefferson, President's daughter, revealed.... Jenny Wheeler: Sure, and with the fiction, you obviously had a very good career as a professor. What was the spark that made you feel, I still want something else? To say to yourself, I want to be able to do fiction. Was there a Once Upon A Time moment that was a catalyst for that? Laura Kamoie: For the historical fiction? Jenny Wheeler: No, for the romance, when you first got started. Laura Kamoie: So I have a funny story about how I started writing fiction, and that is that in 2008, I had a traumatic brain injury and as part of recovering from that injury, I had this very strong and new creative urge. I started writing my first novel, which was a paranormal romance, and I started taking guitar lessons. Luckily I was a lot better at one of those

Have you seen the cute little boxes of all colors and sizes on posts where you just open the door and you can take a book? Is there one in your neighborhood? The Little Free Library national movement is 10 years old this year and we wanted to celebrate this anniversary by exploring the movement in our community with our 2 guests this week. Mary Sullivan is a master builder with Metro United Way who spearheaded the Little Free LIbrary movement in underserved neighborhoods of Louisville which now includes 42 little libraries. Joan Dubay is a retired teacher who implemented a Little Free Library at her church and continues to maintain it by adding upwards of 50 books a week to the library. Mary and Joan talk to us about how they first found out about Little Free Libraries, why Little libraries were chosen as a way to help local children be school successful, and how this movement is a revolving door of good feels. They wowed us with the surprising number of books being shared. Mary wants our listeners to know that if you have books you would like to donate they can be delivered to Metro United Way, 334 E. Broadway in Louisville between the hours of 8:45-4:30 Monday-Friday. If you need other times call 502.583-2821 and leave a message for Mary Sullivan. November is National Novel Writing Month aka NaNoWriMo Have you ever thought about writing your family history? Well...now might be the time to start. My guest is an author who weaves fiction and non-fiction together into historical fiction. Real people live in her pages with a fictionalized context. In 1806, Eliza Hamilton, Isabella Graham, and Johanna Bethune started the first private orphanage in New York City known as the Orphan Asylum Society. Over the last 210 years it has evolved into Graham Windham and this week we are proud to welcome President and CEO Jess Dannhauser to tell us all about Eliza's living legacy.
About our Interview with: Ari Afsar. Ari is about to add HAMILTON to her list of credits that is already pretty impressive with American Idol contestant, and Miss California 2010 winner. This week, she will begin her performances as Eliza Hamilton in the Chicago HAMILTON cast. We got to sit down with her during the rehearsal process to discuss this amazing opportunity, and the steps that led to it. We talk about the ups and downs of getting fame at an early age, and why American Idol was both the best and worst experience for her. Also, listen in to this fun interview to find out how she still attended UCLA, even after the university turned her down; it’s a great lesson in tenacity!!! Hello Internet! We are sorry this episode is so good that your brain will hurt from its goodness! This week we are talking about APOLOGIES! From cave walls to current day, what makes a great apology? We'll give you from examples from some very recognizable names (including a pretty sick burn from Eliza Hamilton) if you need help! We'll even teach you how to apologize when you aren't sorry! Also, what to do if someone doesn't forgive you! Learn what to do about that friend who NEVER apologizes! All that and even more answers to more of your questions! If you doubted this was a great episode, we forgive you!
It's a bummer, but we have to talk about the crazy level of hypocrisy surrounding our Founding Fathers fighting for freedom yet still owning slaves. It sucks. We break down who was the biggest hypocrite and… we hate to say it, but there's a good possibility Alexander and Eliza Hamilton owned some slaves of their own. But we balance things out with some awesome listener emails! Silver lining? Yes, because we have the best listeners of all time.
You Guuuuuuuuuuys!!! We could not be happier to bring you today’s episode featuring the divine, the lovely, the just ridiculously talented Phillipa Soo. Phillipa created the role of Eliza Hamilton in last year’s off-Broadway production of the smash hit musical Hamilton at the Public Theater and this season she made her Broadway debut in the role. She first rose to fame in the title role of Natasha in the 2013 off Broadway hit 'Natasha Pierre and the Great Commit of 1812.'So, you guys, we have a really special surprise for you at the end of this episode. It’s a first for us. It’s completely related to our interview with Phillipa, but even she doesn't know about it. So stick around after our interview with her, I promise it will be worth it.
