A War, A Bride, and Kaiju Vibes This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl review Netflix's sci-fi military action movie War Machine, break down Maggie Gyllenhaal's wild gothic swing The Bride!, and head back into the Monsterverse for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Season 2, Episodes 1 and 2. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 War Machine: 8:50 The Bride!: 30:50 Monarch: 55:22 War Machine (2026) Netflix original movie Directed by Patrick Hughes Stars Alan Ritchson, Dennis Quaid, Stephan James, Jai Courtney Premise: Army Ranger selection turns into a fight against a giant alien killing machine Did the premise rule or feel like rejected action-figure packaging copy? Is Alan Ritchson becoming the king of “large man solves impossible nonsense” cinema? Was this dumb-fun in the right way or just loud? Ratings out of 10 When ED 209 Gets on Gear and Rampages Brian: 6.15/10 Darryl: 7.2/10 The Bride! (2026) Theatrical release from Warner Bros. Directed and written by Maggie Gyllenhaal Stars Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, Jake Gyllenhaal, Penélope Cruz Premise: In 1930s Chicago, Frank seeks a companion, and a murdered woman is brought back to life as the Bride Ambitious art-horror fairy tale or self-conscious prestige weirdness? How was Christian Bale's monster performance? Did the punk tone work? Did the movie deserve better than its opening weekend, or was the audience basically saying “absolutely not, you little goblin”? Rating out of 10 Mary Shelly’s Bonnie and Clyde Possession Acid Trip Brian: 6.2/10 Darryl:5.1/10 Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (AppleTV) Apple TV+ Monsterverse series Season 2 premiered February 27, 2026 Episode 1: Cause and Effect Summary Season 2 opens with Monarch thrown into chaos by Keiko's return after being presumed dead for decades. At the same time, Cate goes against orders to try to save Shaw, and that rescue effort helps unleash a dangerous new Titan. Broadly, the episode works as a reset button for the season: it reconnects the fractured cast, throws everyone back into crisis mode, and pushes the story deeper into Skull Island and the larger Titan threat. Episode 2: Resonance Summary The second episode splits its tension between two fronts. Lee and Keiko investigate a secretive village tied to a cult-like devotion to a mysterious sea creature, while Cate runs into a deadly stowaway situation on the Monarch side of the story. Reviews and synopses describe the episode as expanding the threat beyond Skull Island, with a rogue Titan moving toward busy shipping lanes, so it feels less like setup and more like the season starting to flex its monster-muscle a bit. Returning cast includes Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Joe Tippett, Anders Holm, and Takehiro Hira Did the season come back strong? Are the human characters finally balancing better with the monster spectacle? The battle for Warner Bros. Discovery is seeing a new champion enter the ring, with Netflix making some moves to put their own bid in for the studio's properties. According to Reuters, the streaming pioneer engaged with investment bank Moelis & Co. in order to prepare an offer. Ironically, this is the same bank that worked with David Ellison at Skydance to take over Paramount whose first bid to buy Warner Bros. Discovery was rejected. It was the worst weekend at the box office this year, with ticket sales coming in at just $52.4 million. This also makes it the lowest-grossing Halloween weekend in 31 years, excluding theater closures due to COVID in 2020. While new film Regretting You took in a respectable $50 million, Black Phone 2 really has the crown from the weekend having now brought in $104 million globally - another huge win for horror this year. Yorgos Lanthimos' new film Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, is sitting at a small $11.1 million globally after breaking into more theaters. Both Scream 7 and Stranger Things Season 5 released trailers recently. Stranger Things' official trailer showed us a bit more of what to expect from that property and Scream 7, which releases on February 27, 2026, gave us a glance at the returning original cast members of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, and David Arquette. As we discussed last week, Stranger Things will release in three parts on holiday weekends, four episodes on November 26, three episodes on Christmas Day, and the finale on New Year's Eve.A 'Conjuring' prequel film is in development at Warner Bros. and New Line, with short film director Rodrigue Huart in talks to direct. Franchise veterans Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who co-wrote the two prior “Conjuring” films, 2023's “The Nun II” and this September's “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” are on board to pen the screenplay. After landing the rights to turn one of the world's biggest video games into an epic movie, Paramount has now landed two A-list filmmakers to develop it. Sources tell Deadline that Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and Peter Berg have joined Paramount and Activision to develop and produce a Call of Duty movie, with Paramount distributing a live-action feature film.Hulu has ordered two more seasons of the revived King of the Hill animated series, the 16th and 17th overall and third and fourth seasons as a streaming original. Season 14 premiered in August and is the first half of Hulu's initial two-season, 20-episode order; season 15 is set to debut in 2026.Sam Mendes' four Beatles films have filled out the cast by adding the spouses of the four band members. Saoirse Ronan will play Linda McCartney, Anna Sawai will play Yoko Ono, Aimee Lou Wood will play Pattie Boyd, and Mia McKenna-Bruce will play Maureen Starkey.Ariana Grande has joined the cast of season 13 of American Horror Story, which is currently on track to debut around Halloween 2026.Toho has officially revealed the title of its next “Godzilla” feature that will serve as a sequel to Godzilla: Minus One as “Godzilla -0.0” (Godzilla Minus Zero). The film will once again be written, directed and produced by the same team behind 2023's “Godzilla Minus One.” Currently, there are no plot details, but the studio is currently targeting a release date in late 2026.Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are going back to the desert for The Mummy 4. The film will be directed by the duo known as Radio Silence, composed of Martin Bettinelli-Opin and Tyler Gillett, who directed 2019's Ready or Not.

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesIt appears as though Marvel Studios much speculated film that was slated to release between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars in July 2027, won't be happening after all; or at least not that July, as Disney has replaced the untitled project with a sequel to The Simpsons Movie dated for July 23, 2027. The move comes as a surprise to many Marvel fans who anticipated a possible Doctor Strange or Shang-Chi sequel to take place between the Avengers tentpoles but is in keeping with what Bob Iger and Kevin Feige have promised about a slowdown in production. Elsewhere, with Marvel Zombies premiering on Disney Plus last week, Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum teased a possible season 2, but emphasized that would be contingent on viewership and new Disney Plus subscriptions. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Olsen took the opportunity to share that although she recorded lines for the series, she doesn't remember anything about the show or plot. It was a huge week for trailers from a bevy of our favorite franchises, so lets run them down with another good old fashioned Trailer Park:Insomniac and Sony released the first gameplay trailer for Marvel's Wolverine on the PS5, which will release in fall of 2026.Lucasfilm unveiled a new trailer for Star Wars; Visions Volume 3 which also announced the cast that includes Anna Sawai, Freddie Highmore, George Takei, Harvey Guillén, Jodie Turner-Smith, Judith Light, Simu Liu, Stephanie Hsu, and Steve Buscemi. The final trailer for Jon M. Chu's Wicked: For Good released last Wednesday morning to much acclaim. And finally, a new trailer for 20th Century's Avatar: Fire and Ash teased more of the villainous faction and stakes.Director Denis Villeneuve shed new light on his upcoming version of 007 for Amazon/MGM; sharing that the casting process will begin next year after he's completed production on Dune: Part Three for Warner Bros and that he is looking to cast a “relatively unknown” “fresh face” actor in their 20s or 30s. Additional criteria the filmmaker included is that the performer must hail from the British Isles and be male, as well as his desire to capture what Fleming called “a blunt instrument” — the lethal but “extremely dull, uninteresting man to whom things happened.” If Villeneuve and team stay true to these parameters, it potentially rules out many fan-casted favorites and seems to be in more alignment with the Broccoli family's traditions with the character than expected with new creatives in control.Mark Ronson is slated to reunite with Greta Gerwig to score her Chronicles of Narnia adaptation at Netflix. Ronson previously served as executive music producer for Gerwig's Barbie.Amazon MGM Studios‘ adaptation of Rebecca Yarros' bestselling novel Fourth Wing is closing in on a new showrunner. Notably, that new date will cover the Juneteenth holiday as well as Father's Day. It previously was dated for June 25, 2027.Comedian Bill Burr is in talks to join the cast of Aaron Sorkin and Sony Pictures' sequel to The Social Network, after Jeremy Strong, Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White were officially cast. The film also has been retitled The Social Reckoning and will officially hit theaters on Oct. 9, 2026.A newly created AI “actress” named Tilly Norwood, designed by the studio Xicoia under Particle6, has reportedly drawn interest from Hollywood talent agencies. The announcement sparked major backlash from real actors, with critiques about replacing human talent, the ethics of compositing real faces, and calls to boycott agencies that represent AI personas.

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes.Reports are here to give us hope that a Scarlet Witch solo movie is in the works, though this is not confirmed by Marvel Studios or Kevin Feige. The news from Production Weekly comes on the heels of a Dublin radio interview given by Wanda Maximoff actress Elizabeth Olsen where she indicated her love for the character and her willingness to return to the role if “there's a way to use her well.”  Television's royalty was out on Sunday, September 15, when the 76th Emmys took place. Hosted by father/son comedy duo Eugene and Dan Levy, the award show mostly followed expectations with a surprise win from Jean Smart's show Hacks taking home Best Comedy Series and Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Smart herself. Otherwise, Shogun and The Bear cleaned up, with the former setting historic records including Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada becoming the first Japanese actors to EVER win Emmys. The Bear did well for itself as usual, with its 11 awards setting a new record for the most wins for a single season of comedy.  The final trailer for Venom: The Last Dance was released by Sony. The trailer showcases Eddie Brock and his symbiote sidekick facing down Venom's homeworld, with comics enemy Knull at the forefront as the antagonist. Venom: The Last Dance is the final movie in the trilogy, written by Kelly Marcel who is also taking a turn in the director's chair for this entry. Happy Gilmore stars, Christopher McDonald and Julie Bowen, have joined Adam Sandler to reprise their roles for Netflix's Happy Gilmore 2, which is now officially in production. Netflix has released a new trailer for adult animated series Twilight of the Gods from Zack Snyder, which is based on Norse Mythology. The series debuts on the streamer on September 19. Last week, the first trailer was released for Gary Dauberman's upcoming Stephen King adaptation, Salem's Lot. The film will begin streaming on Max on October 3. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice stayed atop the box office this weekend, pulling in about $50 million dollars to bring its worldwide total earnings to $263.4 million dollars in its second weekend. Lionsgate's The Killer's Game starring Dave Bautista took in a disastrous $2.6 million dollars. Netflix has announced that Emily in Paris has been renewed for a fifth season. Deadline has revealed that Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron has purchased the rights to Charles Pellegrino‘s forthcoming book Ghosts of Hiroshima. Cameron has committed to use that, and the 2015 Pellegrino book Last Train From Hiroshima, as the basis for a film he will shoot in between Avatar productions. It will mark Cameron's first non-Avatar film since 1997's Oscar-winning Titanic. AppleTV+ has canceled Time Bandits, an adaptation of a 1981 feature film by Terry Gilliam, after a single season. The news comes less than four weeks after Time Bandits completed its 10-episode first season on August 21. The long rumored The Sims film adaptation has finally found a home and director. Amazon MGM Studios has announced that development has begun on a film adaptation of the long-running Electronic Arts gaming series. Kate Herron, known for directing the Disney+ series Loki, will helm the feature from a script that she is co-writing with Briony Redman. Margot Robbie's production company Lucky Chap will produce. It was another big night for "Shogun" during the main event of the 76th annual Emmy Awards. The program set a single season record for most wins with 18, including best drama series and acting awards for Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai. "The Bear" also had a big night with four awards, but was snubbed for best comedy as "Hacks" took that honor. As co-host Bruce Miller mentioned, there has been discussion among insiders that "The Bear" should be a drama, not a comedy.  "Baby Reindeer" also wone four awards in the limited series category. Miller and co-host Terry Lipshetz share their thoughts, and also look ahead to the future: Can "Shogun" sustain success in a second season? Will "The Bear" become move to the drama category? Can a show like "Only Murders in the Building" finally break out in the comedy category? And, looking even further ahead, is the new limited series "American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez" an early favorite for an Emmy next year? The show debuted this week and looks at the troubled life of the NFL tight end. Contact us! We want to hear from you! Tory Tunnell's original dream was to the Editor for Vogue. In college, she interned at places like The New Yorker and Harper's Bizarre, but she minored in Film, which started a trek to working as a Producer. These days, Tunnell is known for Holy Rollers, My Blind Brother, King Arthur - Legend of the Sword, Underground, Robin Hood, Spinning Out, and now Monarch - Legacy of Monsters. The latest series stars Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Anna Sawai, Anders Holm, Kiersey Clemons, and Ren Watabe. The plot reads, "Set after the battle between Godzilla and the Titans, revealing that monsters are real, follows one family's journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to Monarch.” In this interview, Tory talks about the mechanism of film both in terms of creativity and commerce, jumping in the deep with little to no experience, how she cold called billionaires, misdirects in any career path, being persistent yet not annoying, sticking with a project until it gets made, and how to actually make money in this business. We also mention Tory's husband and producing partner, Joby Harold, which I interviewed back in Episode 348 for Obi-Wan Kenobi and Misha Green, the showrunner for Underground back in Episode 03.
