Gaiety Productions in association with Decadent Theatre Company proudly presents the IRISH PREMIERE of Hangmen by Martin McDonagh from 11 March – 8 April 2023. In his small pub in Oldham, Harry is something of a local celebrity. But what's the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they've abolished hanging? Amongst the local reporters and sycophantic pub regulars, dying to hear Harry's reaction to the news, a peculiar stranger lurks, with a very different motive for his visit… This major new production comes hot off the heels of the release of McDonagh's new award-winning feature film, The Banshees of Inisherin. The creative team is led by director Andrew Flynn who has a long association with McDonagh's work. This darkly comic tale follows the success of recent Gaiety Productions including The Cripple of Inishmaan, The Lieutenant of Inishmore and The Lonesome West. Funded by the Arts Council | An Chomhairle Ealaíon This production contains strong depictions of violence. Recommended for ages 14+

Last week, scientists from all over Ireland and Europe were trapped on Inishmaan for three days as a result of a typical November storm. Luckily, studying such extreme weather and its effect on the Irish coast and climate change was exactly why they were there. The scientists had been attending a scientific conference showcasing research on ocean science, forecasting and climate change focused on developing a roadmap towards a permanent Aran Islands International Research Station (AIRS). Aran Islands International Research Station (AIRS) Inishmaan is uniquely placed for such a permanent research station, and would open major new perspectives for Irish and European research, not only in wave and storm science but also on a variety of other areas such as geology, agronomy, botany, climate change, archaeology, and renewable energies. This unique location provides unparalleled access to study ocean storms and weather systems, areas of research of critical importance as the world struggles to understand and adapt to climate change. The conference provided a timely forum for leading international scientists to meet with members of the local community to discuss how to best serve ocean and climate science, and to consider how the research station could be adapted into a more permanent facility. The HIGHWAVE station had been planned since 2019 by Professor Frederic Dias and Senior Research Engineer Arnaud Disant, was funded by the European Research Council, and has been operational since 2021. It is now providing invaluable data on local wave conditions and their effects on coastal erosion and future global warming trends. The conference began with opening addresses from Prof Orla Feely, UCD Vice President for Research, Innovation and Impact, and Prof Philippe Maitre, Vice-President, Research Strategy from ENS-Paris, the two founding institutions of AIRS. The local community was represented by the Aran Island Energy Coop (CFOAT), Comhlacht Forbartha Inis Meáin, and Coláiste Naomh Eoin, and there were exciting presentations that caught the attention of the scientific representatives of Ireland, France, Italy, USA, Norway, Uruguay, and the Netherlands. The conference concluded with a clear consensus on the need for a permanent research station on the Aran Islands, and UCD and ENS will work together in pursuit of this. From the desk of VC&S Deputy Engineer, Fulmar Ward, Hilna Hass Build note: Do not transmit until you get confirmation of the race results. Until then, the following is pre-approved on infrastructural clearance, which means if you move so much as a semi-colon I will expect your proposed revision to be accompanied by a full structural analysis. Flagged in triplicate, by hand. Begin transmission: A heritage of excellence. A focus on family. And the drive to push their sand-crawling arthropod faster than anyone on the track. These are the defining traits of Solomon Purple, the new champion of the Subita Speed Way, who claimed the title in a dramatic upset over local favorite Zinc Garland. You wouldn't know it from the results, but the qualifying heat last week was Purple's first time participating in the arthropod circuit. Purple attributed their speedy ascent to the top of the podium to the support of their family. "Yeah, it's not just me out there racing, right?" Purple says. "It's me, right, and it's my lobster - her name's Sand Basket - like, obviously it's her too. But it's also my sister Inishmaan, who pushed me to get out here in the first place and helped cover for me while I took some time away from the family business. It's my Ell Tee - that's how I say lieutenant now, right, it's faster and I'm always trying to be faster - Partial picking up the slack with my crew. I couldn't have done it without any of them." Purple hopes their unprecedented victory helps the people of The Vast see their family in a new light and consider reaching out to ask how the Purples can work with their local community; while the clan traces its lineage all the way back to the first sky ship engineers and explorers, it's an open secret that Protectorate Affairs is investigating the group on suspicions of inter-landberg smuggling and racketeering. "They just need somebody to point the finger at for all their own corruption and oversights," Purple explains. "It's unfortunate, but like, I can't even be that mad at them, you know? The PAs don't have what we've got - family - and they never will, and they're jealous about it. I get it. Still, I gotta draw a line when they're out there giving my fiances a hard time. Sand Basket and me are ready to talk like adults when they are." When reached for comment, a Protectorate Affairs representative declined to comment on any details of the rumored investigation into the Purples Family or Solomon Purple's fiances. Seemingly unfounded rumors aside, Purple has another race to win next week. They have no plans of stepping aside now that they've reached the top. End transmission

Annie's been in the news a bit recently, because after 17 years as one of BBC Radio 1's most loved DJs, she has left the station, and the video of her playing her final song went viral online, I think simply because she is such a legend in the industry, and a big part of the lives of so many music lovers, so this farewell was a huge deal. We talk about how she became a DJ and presenter, and her illustrious career and what that involved - and then her travel diaries chapters are all focussed on destinations across Ireland - the place where she grew up, travels back to as much as she can, and knows so well. And then later, I'm joined by travel writer and Ireland expert, Aoife O'Riordain who shares some really brilliant tips, in particular some amazing foodie recommendations and a hotel that I'd never heard, on an Irish island that I'd also never heard of, of that has gone straight to the top of my hotel wish list. Irish playwright Martin McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmaan isn’t even 20-years-old, but the play is already getting its third New York production. The latest does have a couple of special characteristics. The play is being presented for the first time in a Broadway house at the Court Theatre and leading the cast — and, presumably, the tourist-ticket trade — is Daniel Radcliffe, best known as the big screen Harry Potter. So, besides that, what does this production have going for it? Well, a couple of good things, says New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood.

Nominations for the 68th annual Tony Awards were announced Tuesday, with tough competition in several categories. For instance, Tyne Daly, Cherry Jones and Audra McDonald are among the nominees for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play; Sutton Foster, Idina Menzel and Kelly O'Hara are all nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical.  Leading the nominations list is the musical A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, which earned 10 Tony nods. Hedwig and the Angry Inch staring Neil Patrick Harris, is next with eight nominations. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood suggests some likely winners, considers who got snubbed and takes note of the Broadway season as reflected in the nominees list. The Tony Awards will be given out on June 8 at Radio City Music Hall in a ceremony hosted by Hugh Jackman and broadcast on CBS. With Mark Lawson. Daniel Radcliffe discusses playing the title role of Billy in the darkly comic stage play The Cripple of Inishmaan by Martin McDonagh (writer and director of In Bruges). Radcliffe describes the challenges of taking on a distinct west coast Irish accent and portraying someone with severe disabilities, who wants to leave his remote island home when a Hollywood film crew comes to town. The actor also talks about his career choices post-Harry Potter and a potential return to his famous role, why he expects people to dislike him, and whether he would want to take the lead in Doctor Who. Adapted from Max Brooks' novel with the same name, World War Z is the latest zombie apocalypse film. It stars Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a United Nations investigator who travels the world to try work out a cure for the zombie pandemic. Jenny McCartney gives her verdict. Neil Gaiman, whose books include Stardust and Coraline, chooses a work by the Victorian artist Richard Dadd - The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke - painted whilst Dadd was incarcerated at Bedlam hospital. This lecture examines how contemporary Irish playwrights depict and how they engage the cinematic and narrative patterns we’ve come to associate with American movies. Donal O’Kelly’s Catalpa (1995), Martin McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmaan (1996), Marie Jones’s Stones in His Pockets (1999), and Geraldine Hughes’s Belfast Blues (2003) grapple with the effects of Hollywood on their characters and on Irish society. Despite frequently depicting individuals thwarted in their pursuit of big screen success, these plays maintain a surprising optimism about Hollywood. This suggests the American film industry provides a productive tool for exploring Irish identity and history in a moment of rapidly changing, globalized popular culture.
