In this sermon we look at what it means to follow a God who sets things in motion behind the scenes. It's a sermon from the modern the era, perhaps. For people who are otherwise closed of God, but cannot escape that something beyond is pressing into their lives (and this with a little help from a 2012 film called Jeff Who Lives at Home).
We catch up with a bunch of cinematic recommendations with After Hours, The Manson Family Vacation, Theatre Camp, I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore, Kenny, Brother's Nest, Jeff Who Lives at Home, Biosphere and a few more along the way. Rewinding back to just a decade ago that seems unfathomable today where little indie pictures could still populate several hundred screens during their release, Mike introduces Dino to one of the more contemporary offerings in our canon in I Eat Movies #28: Dino's First Time - Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011). Starring Jason Segel (TV's How I Met Your Mother) as a grieving stoner searching for a purpose in the signs that surround us everyday, this Duplass Brothers production finds Segel on a journey that finds him reconnecting with his estranged brother (Ed Helms, The Office) as they try to determine whether or not his wife is cheating on him. Along the way, their mother (played by the legendary Susan Sarandon, Thelma & Louise) is also longing for a connection not experienced since her husband passed away that will somehow lead this fractured family down a path they never could imagine. Will Mike's own emotional reaction to this charming little picture be enough to sway Dino? Find out in I Eat Movies #28: Dino's First Time - Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011).

Jay Duplass is a busy guy. Often alongside his younger brother Mark, Jay has left his distinct signature on dozens of projects over the past two decades, proving through his prolific yet singular work that the indie film spirit is still alive and well in America. Whether he’s acting, directing, writing, or producing, Jay is always creating art that’s imbued with a sense of unvarnished honesty. Movie fans since childhood, the Duplass brothers created a handful of short films before breaking onto the festival scene with The Puffy Chair in 2005. Since then, Jay has brought us films like Cyrus, Jeff Who Lives at Home, and the upcoming Outside In, as well the short-lived HBO series Togetherness. This week, he and Sam cover everything from how it felt to love movies pre-internet to the myths surrounding the Duplass brothers, as well as the spontaneity necessary for good filmmaking, and of course, the particular strangeness of being known to the public. http://talkeasypod.com/

Michael fell into film score composition by chance when The Greyboy Allstars were asked to score Jake Kasdan's first feature Zero Effect and worked on the music for the highly regarded (though short-lived) TV series, Freaks and Geeks. In 2000, Richard Kelly commissioned Michael to do the soundtrack for the film Donnie Darko. Its original score album went on to sell over 100,000 copies (in part because of Michael's remake of Tears for Fears' song Mad World, featuring Gary Jules). Michael has since gone on to compose scores for the movies Out Cold, Nothing, Cypher, Orange County, Me and You and Everyone We Know, The TV Set, a segment of Paris, je t'aime, Unaccompanied Minors, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. More recently, Michael has composed for: Funny People, Bridesmaids, The Five Year Engagement, Cyrus and Jeff Who Lives At Home for The Duplass Brothers, and the upcoming film, The Reluctant Fundamentalist for Mira Nair.

See you next week when Discover Music Project returns with guest Jon Rind!
We revisit our conversation with filmmaking brothers Jay and Mark Duplass, whose movie, Cyrus, marked a turning point in their careers. They'd made feature films but never before with studio backing, never with known actors and never with significant budgets. As darlings of the indie world and trailblazers in the mumblecore filmmaking style they gained acclaim at festivals and on blogs, but now they're rising stars in Hollywood and are currently in post production on their next film, Jeff Who Lives at Home.
