After the success of 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, it would seem inevitable that there would be a sequel. While greenlit rather quickly, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes would once again see an overhaul of behind the scenes talent. Gone is James Franco, to be replaced by Jason Clarke (Terminator Genisys). Gone is director Rupert Wyatt, to be replaced by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield). So it would seem that the Planet of the Apes would once again have to prove to be a valuable franchise when Dawn was to be released in 2014. Well, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes proved to be exactly that, grossing over $700 million at the box office and landing on many critics' best of the year lists. But where do we land with it? Join Matt, Adam, and Garrett as they review 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and determine if all its praise is warranted. And be sure to keep coming back, as the boys will continue going through the franchise until they review the brand new release Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

[School of Movies 2024] With the new Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Maze-Runner helmer Wes Ball emerging this week, we went back to look at a Trilogy that emerged without any overarching grand plan, changing directors after the first instalment, with both men just trying to make the absolute best film they could with the opportunity they had. And they succeeded! This is one of the best low-key trios of films based on a long-existing franchise that nobody had any real expectations of, and that were easy to overlook in the decade when superheroes ruled the big screen. You will find out here what the creators' aims were, and the challenges of crafting films like these where the stars won't be in the picture until Weta Digital paint them in, and yet so much of those characters are right there in the human performances. If you ever doubted that Andy Serkis deserved a Best Actor nomination, regardless of digital makeup, this may convince you.

Though 2001's Planet of the Apes remake proved that the property was still viable enough to make money, no one was aching to follow up Tim Burton's film with another Mark Wahlberg starring romp. So, the franchise once again went back to the ‘we'll get to it when we can' pile of films. Flash forward to 2011. Armed with Gollum himself Andy Serkis, as well as visionary director Rupert Wyatt, 20th Century Fox seemed ready to once again do a new version of Planet of the Apes for the masses called Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Though this time, they substituted James Franco in place of hunky Mark Wahlberg. The result was another success, this time with both critics and audiences. For our seventh episode studying the film series which once asked us to go ape, we find ourselves in a state-of-the-art- circa 2011 anyways- digital playground with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the first of the most recent trilogy of reimagined primate action. Listen as we first discuss some recent films we've seen, including Robert Altman's 1979 uncharacteristic bore Quintet and the newly released Don't Breathe 2, which of course sparked a brief conversational revisit of the canny 2016 original. Upon finally getting around to the 2011 simian film, we weigh the various means through which this seventh entry retooled the franchise for yet another new generation, attempt to traverse across the tricky minefield that is James Franco as unscathed as we can, and do our best to come to terms with the likely permanent arrival of computer-generated apes. The Cinemondo gang discusses a cool sci-fi film that somehow got past us when it was released in 2019, but we’re going to make up for it with this episode. Rupert Wyatt's, CAPTIVE STATE, is a hard science-fiction film that takes the well-worn trope of alien invasion and gives us another perspective on how such a thing might actually feel if the aliens won and actually DID take over the earth . How would we really react? Would some people surrender and allow themselves to be exploited by these entities who seem to only want to exploit the planet and destroy the environment? And despite the dire situation, would there still be people fighting to defend humanity from the anti-human? Whose side are you on? And how do you tell if someone can be trusted? CAPTIVE STATE isn’t the typical action-packed alien warfare film, but it’ll give you plenty to think about. And it’s one of those movies that might make you want to watch it again once you know how it ends. Starring John Goodman, Ashton Sanders, Jonathan Majors and Vera Farmiga.Music composed and performed by Burk Sauls.SPOILER WARNING: This episode contains MAJOR SPOILERS which means important story details will be revealed. On the June 21, 2019 episode of /Film Daily, /Film editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film senior writer Ben Pearson and writer Hoai-Tran Bui to discuss the latest film and tv news, including Star Wars, Red Sonja, Easy A, Picture In Picture, Black Widow and Vertigo. We also continue our discussion about good movie prequels.   Opening Banter:   Feedback: In a previous episode Peter asked if there has ever been a really good prequel movie: Wyatt C writes in “ I'm surprised this didn't come up at all during the discussions of great prequel movies because this is not only a good prequel movie but a good prequel trilogy.  It is the Planet of the Apes trilogy kicked off by Rupert Wyatt's Rise and concluded with Matt Reeves Dawn and War.” Bill G writes in “Rogue One is a Good prequel. It's a solid standalone movie. and that's also what makes it a great prequel.   It has its own story, but actually enhances the viewing of A New Hope. That's what makes it good. It doesn't try to explain every tiny little thing about a character we were previously introduced to (eg Solo) or explanations of a monster that doesn't need a complex origin story (eg Alien: Covenant). Neither of which needed to be explained.  The movie takes a small, important, interesting detail and builds its own narrative around it with some notable, well-known characters playing their bit parts that advance the narrative without overdoing it.

The Filmlosophers, Eddie Villanueva, Chad Riley and Spencer Williams, get a bit sneaky with this week's review of Captive State (2019). Written and directed by Rupert Wyatt, the film stars John Goodman, Ashton Sanders, Jonathan Majors, Machine Gun Kelly, and Vera Farmiga. Its depiction of a world held captive by aggressive, insect-like aliens hews closely to other films within the genre while also attempting to differentiate itself as a think-piece on social stratification and themes of insurgency against an oppressive government. In a landscape full of enemies both foreign and domestic, what chance does one have to rise up and effect change? And can the audience hang in long enough to care about the outcome? Listen in to find out what we thought of the film...

In 2001, producer Avi Arad and Marvel Studios brought the world "Mutant X," a sci-fi television series VERY LOOSELY connected to the X-Men comics (due to legal issues). Despite its tangential-at-best connection to the X-Universe, Trev and Joe have decided to give the show its day, by watching and reporting on both the pilot and the 66th and final episode (we'll leave it to some other X-Men podcast to bother with the other 64). But first, the guys discuss Joe's recent Emmy win, current news events and how they relate to the X-Men, and Rupert Wyatt being announced as the "Gambit" director (mostly just an excuse to swoon over Channing Tatum, yet again). Plus, the guys make a pitch to Vice President Joe Biden that, quite frankly, he would be a fool to turn down. Christopher Lee's Passing. 4. Sony and Paramount are also skipping ComicCon. 5. Kenneth Branagh might direct "Thor 3". 6. Ron Pearlman: "We owe fans a Hellboy 3". 7. "Gambit" lands "Apes" director Rupert Wyatt.   MAILBAG QUESTIONS From Anonymous: "Are you guys good with Marvel passing on bringing in Miles Morales as the new Spider-Man? I think it would have been a great addition to the diversity of the MCU. Why do you think they passed on him? Thanks for taking my question!" From RobertYao33 "Hey guys. Really like your shows! My question is about Rob Zombie directing the upcoming Groucho Marx biopic. I know he's a high-regarded horror director but do you think he'll be able to do a film about the madcap talents of Groucho Marx? Thanks and keep up the great work!" From Strawhat7 "My question is regarding the status of a Hulk standalone film. It was recently reported that Marvel is not tied up in a rights bind with Universal regarding standalone Hulk films. So why are we still not hearing anything about the Hulk getting his own film? Thanks guys and keep going strong!"   Enjoy this episode and as always, we will see you in the Front Row!

Join me and Drew of Trek FM as we experiment on our own brains with the help of James Franco and a ton of CGI until we see apes everywhere. We analyze the structure of the film and compare it to the old Apes movies, the sequel, and "Flowers for Algernon", Deep Blue Sea, and Dragonball Z. And we wonder who the hell "Rupert Wyatt" is. We puzzle over some minor plot holes, try to "fix" the film, and create our own sequels and crossovers. I question James Franco's salary and taste in vehicles; Drew compares James Franco to C-3P0; and we both try to figure out who the villain is.

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is a typical example of a dystopian film. As a reboot of the 1960s classic "Planet of the Apes" series, the latest version excels in visual effects and a logical plot, but falls short of a pertinent portrayal of human, or shall we say, primate, psyche. To save his father from the ordeal of Alzheimer's disease, scientist Will Rodman develops a retrovirus and tests it on chimpanzees. The virus boosts the chimps' intelligence dramatically and sparks the fire of wisdom in a baby chimp named Caesar. After a prolonged process of awakening that extends for years, Caesar finally leads his enlightened brethrens in a fight for freedom. Meanwhile, Rodman discovers the virus is lethal to humans, but it is already too late to stop it from spreading to a global pandemic. Although a science fiction film, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" boasts no fancy technological advancement. The story seems genuinely acceptable to viewers as something that could actually happen in real life, whereas the "Planet of the Apes" series, with all the fancy norms such as spaceships, time travel and nuclear blasts, today appears fictional and less authentic. The authenticity of the reboot is enhanced by the splendid use of motion-capture technology. Andy Serkis, Hollywood's motion-capture actor known for his part as Gollum in "The Lord of the Rings" and Kong in "King Kong," brings to life the primate leader Caesar with his excellent performance. By the way, it has been an ongoing topic of debate whether motion-capture actors should be nominated for Academy Awards. Serkis is now speaking out about the lack of respect for the talent of his fellow motion-capture actors. Plus, director Rupert Wyatt's masterly use of long takes lends extra charm to the film. Viewers cannot help but be overwhelmed by the stunning visual effects as the apes hurl themselves around. But it takes more than spectacle for a film to become a classic. Caesar's extended years of awakening are marked by a rather slow buildup of insignificant happenings. The director's attempt to make these happenings significant is detectable, but can't really be appreciated. Therefore, the film is not successful with the portrayal of the emotions of either humans or intelligent chimpanzees. Compared to other common science-fiction films, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" stands out for its really excellent visual effects and storyline, but fails to touch viewers' souls. At the end of the day, this film deserves 7.5 out of ten.

A comédia emaconhada A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, de Todd Strauss-Schulson. E acabou. Acabou?
