Dr. Ferghal Armstrong and Jesse Ball explore the foundational aspects of early recovery from addiction, highlighting the roles of honesty, support systems, and effective routines. Jesse shares how a no-nonsense, empathetic counsellor with lived experience catalysed his transformation. This episode delves deep into practical strategies to navigate the vulnerable early stages of sobriety and sustain long-term recovery. Listen in for invaluable lessons that go beyond recovery—these are life skills everyone should possess.**Learning Outcomes and Actionable Takeaways:**1. **Honesty and Vulnerability in Recovery:**Jesse emphasises the pivotal role of being completely honest with his counsellor. The absence of judgement and the presence of lived experience created a safe space for Jesse to be vulnerable. By being open about his behaviours and feelings, Jesse was able to receive tailored, effective advice, which was instrumental in his recovery. Honesty not only builds trust but also catalyses tailored interventions essential for overcoming addiction.2. **The Power of Support Systems:**One of the most significant aspects of Jesse's recovery was his willingness to listen to others who had walked the same path. Building relationships with those who have lived experience can provide crucial support and inspiration. During weak moments, reaching out to someone who understands your struggle can make all the difference. Jesse's experience underscores the importance of having a robust support network ready to offer reasoning when self-delusion creeps in.3. **Establishing a Routine:**Jesse's disciplined approach to his daily routine played a critical role in his recovery. From morning walks to regular therapy sessions and meetings, a structured day helped him stay focused and avoid relapse. Incorporating simple, healthy habits like exercising, eating well, and staying occupied can support mental clarity and emotional stability. A consistent routine creates a sense of normalcy and purpose, essential in the tumultuous early stages of recovery.4. **Cutting Ties with Negative Influences:**Jesse made the tough but necessary decision to distance himself from his old friendship group, realising the importance of eliminating risky environments. This bold choice was driven by understanding that his life depended on his recovery. By only engaging in safe social interactions, Jesse minimised triggers and maximised his chances of staying sober. This teaches us the crucial lesson that prioritising health sometimes means making difficult choices about relationships.5. **Proactive Planning for Crises:**Jesse's proactive strategy to pre-empt and address moments of weakness was another key to his success. Knowing the likelihood of temptation, he ensured he had trusted individuals to call when those 'mind worms' started speaking. This preparedness to seek external voices of reason is critical in averting relapse. Planning for crises is an actionable step everyone in recovery should adopt, recognising that the path is fraught with moments requiring external reinforcement.**Quote:***"Often, it's someone else's voice of reasoning during those really weak, vulnerable moments that can be the difference between success and failure."* – Jesse Ball.

In Teaching Art, creative writing teacher Dennis Gaens looks into what it means to teach art in the present day. In this three part series he looks into where we teach art, who teaches it and what exactly is being taught. In this second episode, he explores who should be teaching art, what kind of stance is necessary. He does so in conversation with writers and teachers Jesse Ball, Lorena Briedis and John Vigna. Today I talked to Kerri Schlottman about her new novel Tell Me One Thing (Regal House Publishing, 2023). Quinn and a friend are driving from New York City to Pennsylvania when she sees 9-year-old Lulu sitting on a trucker's lap, smoking a cigarette. At the truck stop for her friend to score drugs, Quinn takes an astounding picture and then leaves, disappointing Lulu, who thinks maybe people will see the picture and help her. Quinn goes on to live the heady life of a successful photographer while Lulu is confronted with various kinds of abuse and dysfunction. Despite the differences in their lives, both women experience moments of great joy, and significant amounts of despair This is a novel about haves and have-nots, those who find love and those who don't, how the AIDS epidemic fractured New York's gay community, and the confusing world of art. Kerri Schlottman's writing has placed second in the Dillydoun International Fiction Prize, been longlisted for the Dzanc Books Prize for Fiction, and was a 2021 University of New Orleans Press Lab Prize semifinalist. For the past 20 years, Kerri has worked to support artists, performers, and writers in creating new projects, most recently at Creative Capital in New York City where she helped fund projects by authors Paul Beatty, Maggie Nelson, Percival Everett, and Jesse Ball. Previously, Kerri has been a factory worker, a massage therapist, and taught art to incarcerated youth. Kerri was born and raised in Southeast Detroit where she earned her graduate degree in English from Wayne State University. She lives in the New York City area with her husband and dog and enjoys running, yoga, and meditation. Learn more about your ad choices. In Teaching Art, creative writing teacher Dennis Gaens looks into what it means to teach art in the present day. In this three part series he looks into where we teach art, who teaches it and what exactly is being taught. In this first episode, he first looks into some legendary art schools with art historian Joanne Dijkman. In the second part, he discusses the classroom and how we should approach it with writers and teachers Lorena Briedis and Jesse Ball. Lorena's Class Proposals, which you wlll find below, are heavily influenced by Jenny Tunedal, who teaches at the Valand Academy in Sweden. She herself was influenced by by an art project called Radikal Pedagogik by Lisa Nyberg and Johanna Gustafsson. Lorena learned about the proposals through this session at the EACWP: https://eacwp.org/activities/course-belgium-2019/. Lorena teaches (and herself studied) at Escuela de Escritores: https://escueladeescritores.com/ Here are her class proposals: • We are here because we want to write. • We are here to play, to experiment, to rave, to wish for the impossible. • We are also here to learn to read (us) in a critical way. We write as we read. • We have set aside this time, each week, for our writing and for sharing our writing with each other. • We are here because we have committed ourselves to be here. • We are here to be the best writer each of us can be. • We do not compete or compare ourselves with others. • We recognize that writing is a craft that requires time and dedication, and we are willing to make our best. • Writing every week and commenting on our classmates' texts is our way of giving. • Listening to our classmates with attention and gratitude is our way of receiving. • Giving and receiving require the same degree of courage, commitment and generosity. • We take this space seriously and we take each other seriously, but we also know how to laugh, joke, play, have fun: how to enjoy. • We are partners in the Dionysian faith. • We interpret what the other tells us with benevolence. • We are receptive and listen attentively. • We recognize that this workshop is a dialogue with the present (our own texts and our circumstances) and with eternity (the literary tradition). • We are personal and private when we need to be. • We are strong and vulnerable at the same time. • Everything that we share here and entrust to each other has a mystical character (ie, secret). • We all contribute to creating a space of mutual trust and solidarity. • We all have experiences that together we can transform into knowledge in the classroom. • There are no better or worse texts: there are texts more or less crafted. • The texts we write, every week, are not finished pieces. They are sketches, experiments, drafts: work in progress. • We are generous with each other. • We read in favor of our texts and not against them. • We write and read like miners, that is, in the direction of gold, of poetry: that is, in the direction of the sacred that is in the wound of each text. • In the texts we do not seek justice (we do not judge), we seek poetry (the infinite understanding). • We are free to write what we want to write and to be whoever we want to be (we do not mistake the author with the narrator). We are interested in everything that concerns the human condition without exception. • We dare to fail. • We dare to take position and we also dare to change our position. • We are not afraid to say what we think, but we say it with respect and with judgment. • We let conflicts have their space (we don't fear them), but we don't make them either bigger nor smaller. • We take responsibility for the power we have and help others to make visible their own power. • We encourage each other to think critically and reflect on our work and the work of others. • We recognize that being here is a privilege. • We are companions, we stand by each other and support each other. • We share together the bread (the sacrifice, the effort) and the wine (the joy) of each text. The workshop is our feast. • We trust processes, more than results. • We imitate and steal in order to learn. • We rehearse, we practice, we succeed, we fail, but we never stop trying again. • We rest when we need it. • We are here, present and ready. • We recognize that the ultimate sense of this space is our love for writing, for literature, for the artistic expression. • We know that the path of writing is long and deep, and we are happy for that. • We know that this journey can only be undertaken with patience, perseverance, with faith and with love. • We tell each other: “Take your time. Enjoy. We have a course ahead. We're on our way."

On this week's Talking Michigan Transportation podcast, a conversation with Jesse Ball, who coordinates social media at the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Ball talks about his background, growing up in the Upper Peninsula, graduating from Michigan State University, then working in California and Michigan media markets. In 2008, he became MDOT's first social media administrator. Understanding that without engagement, social media is just media, Ball talks about the importance of connecting and going beyond one-way communication. The department's Office of Communication puts an emphasis on transparency and sharing information for people to understand often complex transportation challenges. Ball explains the satisfaction he draws from correcting misinformation and providing fact-based answers. Because transportation touches everyone's life everyday with so much work being done in plain sight, it is to be expected that people will have many questions and comments. Ball talks about working with people across the department - Planning, Finance, engineers in Transportation Service Centers across the state - to gather accurate and timely responses to myriad questions. He also explains his random Van Halen reference in a recent Facebook conversation.

This episode I am joined by lapsed lawyer, recovering academic, semi-reformed punk rocker, and now writer and stay-at-home dad, Bram Presser. Bram's writing has appeared in Best Australian Stories, Award Winning Australian Writing, The Sleepers Almanac and Higher Arc. His 2017 debut novel, The Book of Dirt, won the 2018 Goldberg Prize for Debut Fiction in the US National Jewish Book Awards, the 2018 Voss Literary Prize and three awards in the 2018 NSW Premier's Literary Awards: the Christina Stead Prize for Fiction, the UTS Glenda Adams Award for New Writing and The People's Choice Award. We talk about our love of browsing bookstores, Bram's journey to writing a novel, writing a personal history as fiction and of course, we pair some delicious things to some fabulous books! The pairings: The Door by Magda Szabo A busy young writer struggling to cope with domestic chores, hires a housekeeper recommended by a friend. The housekeeper's reputation is one built on dependable efficiency, though she is something of an oddity. Stubborn, foul-mouthed and with a flagrant disregard for her employer's opinions she may even be crazy. She allows no-one to set foot inside her house; she masks herself with a veil and is equally guarded about her personal life. And yet Emerence is revered as much as she is feared. As the story progresses her energy and passion to help becomes clear, extinguishing any doubts arising out of her bizarre behaviour. A stylishly told tale which recounts a strange relationship built up over 20 years between a writer and her housekeeper. After an unpromising and caustic start benign feelings develop and ultimately the writer benefits from what becomes an inseparable relationship. Simultaneously we learn Emerence's tragic past which is revealed in snapshots throughout the book. Bram called this the most beautiful book he has ever read, a modern classic, and a beautiful meditation on dignity and how we imagine people to be. To pair with the interesting and complex character of Emerence he suggests a classic Borscht with sour cream and a traditional Pilsner Urquell. The Curfew by Jesse Ball William and Molly lead a life of small pleasures, riddles at the kitchen table, and games of string and orange peels. All around them a city rages with war. When the uprising began, William's wife was taken, leaving him alone with their young daughter. They keep their heads down and try to remain unnoticed as police patrol the streets, enforcing a curfew and arresting citizens. But when an old friend seeks William out, claiming to know what happened to his wife, William must risk everything. He ventures out after dark, and young Molly is left to play, reconstructing his dangerous voyage, his past, and their future. Bram called Jesse Ball the most exciting writer out of America right now and highly recommends this totalitarian dystopia with its surrealist and strangely beautiful experimental writing. The perfect pairing for Bram is a Corpse Reviver, made with absinthe, gin, cointreau, lillet and lemon juice ... ooooof! It is weird, subtle, warm, sweetly discombobulating with a kick!

Non Fiction is a very French film about writers and publishers debating the future of the book vs e-book. But the characters also all appear to be having affairs with each other: Tres Francais! But will our reviewers be seduced? Stillicide by Cynan Jones and The Diver's Game by Jesse Ball are two new dystopian novels which both authors insist are NOT dystopian. Who's right; The reader or the author? There Are No Beginnings is the play chosen to open the newly renovated Leeds Playhouse. The playwright Charley Miles has insisted it is "NOT a play about The Yorkshire Ripper" but his presence is a dark force at the centre of the play. Pre-Raphaelite Sisters is a new exhibition at London's National Portrait Gallery which aims to look at the women behind the movement most commonly associated with the Brotherhood - as models, artists, makers, partners and poets. Myla Goldberg drops by the Damn Library and immediately gives Christopher and Drew two new business ventures. And that's before they even start talking about her new book, Feast Your Eyes, and its museum catalog form, where she got the photographs, how geniuses shouldn't be assholes, and the photographer as subject for fiction. The Deaths of Henry King (Uncivilized Books) In The Deaths of Henry King, the hapless Henry King, as advertised, dies. Not just once or even twice, but seven dozen times, each death making way for a new demise, moving from the comic to the grim to the absurd to the transcendent and back again. With text by Jesse Ball and Brian Evenson complimented by Lilli Carre's macabre, gravestone-rubbing-style art, Henry King's ends are brought to a vividly absurd life. Praise for The Deaths of Henry King “This unique experience of the macabre blends in plenty of humor; indeed, readers will laugh at Henry as he watches himself get beaten to death, perish trying to scream in space, be eaten by a bear, or focus so hard on avoiding an open manhole that he gets hit by a car.”—Publishers Weekly Praise for Brian Evenson:“Brian Evenson is one of the treasures of American story writing, a true successor both to the generation of Coover, Barthelme, Hawkes and Co., but also to Edgar Allan Poe.”—Jonathan Lethem Praise for Jesse Ball’s A Cure for Suicide:“Spellbinding . . . [Has] the simplicity of a fable and the drama of a psychological thriller.”—The New York Times Book Review Praise for Lilli Carré:“Lilli Carré’s work most piquantly recalls the great avant-garde narrative films, from Menilmontant (1926) to The Saddest Music in the World (2003). Her Wanda Gág–meets–Gene Deitch drawing style and new-weirdness literary bent make her work acutely interesting to both read and scrutinize.”—Ray Olson, Booklist Brian Evenson is the author of a dozen books of fiction, most recently the story collection A Collapse of Horses and the novella The Warren. His novel Last Days won the ALA’s RUSA award for Best Horror Novel of 2009. His novel The Open Curtain was a finalist for an Edgar Award and an International Horror Guild Award. He lives in Los Angeles, and teaches at CalArts. Jesse Ball (1978-). Born in New York. His prizewinning works of absurdity are beloved in a dozen languages. Lilli Carré is an artist living in Los Angeles. She has created several books of comics, including Heads or Tails (Fantagraphics) and the children’s book Tippy and the Night Parade (Toon Books). Her comics and illustration work has appeared in the New Yorker, the New York Times, and Best American Comics.
Sorry to Disrupt the Peace (McSweeney's Books) Helen Moran is thirty-two years old, single, child-less, college-educated, and partially employed as a guardian of troubled young people in New York. She’s accepting a delivery from IKEA in her shared studio apartment when her uncle calls to break the news: Helen’s adoptive brother is dead. According to the internet, there are six possible reasons why her brother might have killed himself. But Helen knows better: she knows that six reasons is only shorthand for the abyss. Helen also knows that she alone is qualified to launch a serious investigation into his death, so she purchases a one-way ticket to Milwaukee. There, as she searches her childhood home and attempts to uncover why someone would choose to die, she will face her estranged family, her brother’s few friends, and the overzealous grief counselor, Chad Lambo; she may also discover what it truly means to be alive. A bleakly comic tour de force that’s by turns poignant, uproariously funny, and viscerally unsettling, this debut novel has shades of Bernhard, Beckett, and Bowles—and it announces the singular voice of Patty Yumi Cottrell. Paise for Sorry to Disrupt the Peace “Grief takes an unnerving path through a singular mind in Sorry to Disrupt the Peace. Beckett fans will find a familiar, but Patty Yumi Cottrell’s voice is her very own.”—Amelia Gray “Patty Yumi Cottrell’s prose does so many of my favorite things—some too subtle to talk about without spoiling, but one thing I have to mention is the way in which her heroine’s investigation of a suicide draws the reader right into the heart of this wonderfully spiky hedgehog of a book and then elbows us yet further along intowhat is ultimately a tremendously moving act of imagination.”—Helen Oyeyemi, author of What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours “Patty Yumi Cottrell’s adoption of the rambling and specific absurd will and must delight. This is a graceful claim not just about writing but about a way of being in the world, an always new and necessary way to contend with this garbage that surrounds us, these false portraits of our hearts and minds. This book is not a diversion—it’s a lifeline.”—Jesse Ball, author of How to Set a Fire and Why “Intelligent and mysterious and funny, Patty Yumi Cottrell’s Sorry to Disrupt the Peace moves so mesmerizingly towards its blazingly good ending. One is tempted to read it as quickly as possible. But really, it is a book that should be read slowly, as some of its deepest pleasures lie in the careful observations, the witty prose, and just the book’s really wonderful gaze on city life, and actually, on all life. This is a stunning debut.”—Rebecca Lee, author of Bobcat “Sorry to Disrupt the Peace had me opening my mouth to laugh only to feel sobs come tumbling out. It’s absurd, feeling so much at once, but it’s a distinctly human absurdity that Patty Yumi Cottrell has masterfully created in this book. In the end I felt ebullient and spent, grateful to be reminded that life is only funny and gorgeous because life is also strange and sad.”—Lindsay Hunter, author of Ugly Girls “‘Behind every suicide, there is a door.’ So says Helen, aka Sister Reliability, aka ‘spinster from a book,’ who is determined to open the door behind her adoptive brother’s recent death. Her search takes her from a studio apartment in NYC to a childhood home in Milwaukee, and yet thein vestigation is as philosophical as it is practical, as was, perhaps, the death itself. Patty Yumi Cottrell’s Sorry to Disrupt the Peace is a beguiling debut: absurdly funny, surprisingly beautiful, and ultimately sad as fuck.”—Danielle Dutton, author of Margaret the First “In this completely absorbing novel of devastation and estrangement, Patty Yumi Cottrell introduces herself as a modern Robert Walser. Her voice is unflinching, unforgettable, and animated with a restless sense of humor.”—Catherine Lacey, author of Nobody Is Ever Missing Patty Yumi Cottrell was born in South Korea and grew up in Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Milwaukee. With the three-month wait for the re-opening of newly renovated Joe’s Pub over at last, you’d think there would be cause for celebration. But Happy Ending Music & Reading series host and curator Amanda Stern decided on “frustration” as the theme of her series opener, inviting authors Seth Fried, Jesse Ball, and Paul La Farge to vent, with plangent musical guest Anni Rossi adding the low notes. Actually there was little venting, as the writers’ selections all looked at the idea of “frustration” obliquely. Seth Fried’s story, for all it was called “The Great Frustration,” invited us into a kind of ur-Eden in which all the animals are plagued by ambivalence about their own nature, and anxious inertia. Jesse Ball presented himself as a sort of living trope; in the program bio and Stern’s introduction he was described as a recently rediscovered “American writer from the '30s, '40s, and '50s.” In fact, Ball, born in 1978, bristles with decidedly contemporary sesquipedalian irony, as in the excerpt here, describing characters in a military parade viewed by a mysterious onlooker. By contrast, Paul La Farge, although only slightly older, seems to be the grand old man of lost causes, reading from his new novel “Luminous Airplanes” a segment in which his protagonist remembers attending a spectacularly unsuccessful rally. For an excerpt from the evening, click on the player above. Bon Mots Fried on losing touch: "Why when the peacock waddles past should the lion imagine a beautiful explosion of feathers?" Ball on the parade passing by: "That is always the decision one is pressed to make — do I join the parade, or not? In certain cases the decision is easy, in others, not so." La Farge on waiting in Dolores Park: "After all the rain we had this winter, the grass shone emerald, like a patch of wet Scotland set out to dry, here on the coast.”
