Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Harry Hamlin, Superstar Actor & Author, “Full Frontal Nudity:  The Making of an Accidental Actor” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Harry Hamlin, is a beloved, highly acclaimed actor who's brought us many memorable performances throughout his 4-decade plus career.   On the big screen, he got a Golden Globe Award nomination in 1979 for New Star of the Year, for his performance opposite George C. Scott in “Movie Movie”.   He went on to star in many movies including “Clash of the Titans”, “Making Love”, “Under Investigation”, “Shoot or Be Shot”, “Immigrant”, “The Fourth Noble Truth”, “The Unattainable Story”, “No Alternative”, and most recently, “80 For Brady”.    And on TV, in addition to his performances as “Reese Hardin” on “Movie Stars”, “Aaron Echolls” on “Veronica Mars”, “Professor Chandler” on “Army Wives”, “Walter” on “Glee”,  “Jonathan Dalton” on “Graves” and “Cortland Mayfair” on “Mayfair Witches”, he will forever be remembered for his portrayals of “Ned Lishman” on “Shameless”, “Jim Cutler” on “Mad Men”, for which he got an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, and of course,  “Michael Kuzak” on “L.A. Law”, for which he received 3 Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Drama Series.   And in 1987, People Magazine named him the Sexiest Man Alive.    On the stage, he's appeared on Broadway in Clifford Odette's “Awake and Sing” and Tennessee Williams' “Summer and Smoke”.  And he's starred in numerous Shakespeare plays, earning a Helen Hayes Award nomination for his performance as Henry V at the renowned Shakespeare Theater Company in Washington.    In 2010, he released a memoir entitled, “Full Frontal Nudity: The Making of an Accidental Actor”, which is a highly entertaining account of his rather unusual, and at times, raucous, adventures as a young student before his film and television career began.   He graduated from Yale with degrees in Drama and Psychology, and subsequently received a Master of Fine Arts in acting from The American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco.   And if all of that weren't enough, our guest is also the co-founder of TAE Technologies, which is at the leading edge of developing anatronic fusion power, which is a clean, safe and inexpensive way of providing electricity to the world.   For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Harry Hamlin, go to:https://www.instagram.com/harryrhamlin/https://twitter.com/HarryRHamlinhttps://tae.com/ #HarryHamlin   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

I remember this edition of Media Network like it was yesterday. It was edition 750. We had many greetings from around the world. And we reminded people that the programme's success was due to a great deal of help from people like Jim Cutler, John Campbell, Lou Josephs, Mike Bird and Victor Goonetilleke. And we celebrated the milestone by going to Las Vegas, NAB. Diana asked me a bit about how it all got started. Internet just starting to roll out to consumers. Big questions were being tabled about t the future of AM radio. We talked to Fred Vobbe, who was producing the monthly DX Audio Service. I'm delighted to discover that they have kept many of those fine programs  We also discovered a station in Melbourne, Florida which was one of the first to try broadcasting into the Internet instead of into the ether. We did a bandscan to discover that Las Vegas means "the meadows" and how to tip. The weather station was actually programmed by an automation company called WeatherRadio in Iowa. It uses 10,000 small audio files recorded by Tom Churchill. And I even found some of the early photos we took. Enjoy.

Memories of a Great Friend and Radio Specialist - Lou Josephs

The Media Network Vintage Vault 2022-2023

Very sad to learn that my colleague and friend, Lou Josephs, has passed away much too soon. He died after a short illness at 6:13 am Sunday July 10th 2016 at a house on Merritt Island, Florida close to his beloved Cape Canaveral. He was 65. My condolences to his life-long partner Susan Koonin who was by his side. There will be funeral in Washington DC on Wednesday July 13th. Jim Cutler and Vasily Strelnikov sent their thoughts and best wishes when they knew he was ill. I delved into this Media Network archive to pick some of the contributions which stick in my memory - but it is a fraction of what Lou contributed behind the scenes.  Lou was one of the first Media Network listeners in the 1980's to step forward and help us develop the programme into a serious media magazine on Radio Netherlands. He made hundreds of contributions to the programme over a period of 15 years, including this great portrait of commercial international broadcaster WNYW, New York. That documentary is one of the most popular editions in the current archive.   I think you'll agree that was Lou at his finest. Some of the other  about WNYW are also still online. From Radio Specialist to Internet Expert I first got to know Lou when he worked as a programme director at music station WROR in Boston. He was using very advanced audience research methods to understand the music mix that his audience wanted - and it made the station a market leader in an era when FM stations had big breakfast talent (Joe and Andy I seem to recall). Lou was always ahead of the game, got out of radio when automation took over, and then moved to Washington DC to work for one of the first US Internet companies. But he never lost his interest in broadcasting - championing on-line listening.   As others have pointed out, the Media Network programme in 1992 was actually a remake of a profile Lou originally made in 1985. As a kid living in New York, Lou got a Saturday job working at WNYW, Radio New York Worldwide and (thankfully) made some unique off the air studio recordings,   Space Lou's first love was space - he was an authority on all the missions and found ways to follow launches from the early days. He was delighted at the success of the mission and was hoping to witness the SpaceX launch this week.   Lou's second love was radio and in my Skype conversations with him over the last few days,  I've been reminiscing about how his predictions about digital AM, on-line audio and satellite television were spot on. I know of few other people who were so well read on the global media, yet willing to share their knowledge and expertise with friends and colleagues around the world. And he competed with our Australian propagation specialist Mike Bird knowing his California wines like no other.   Lou was not on Facebook or other social media platforms. But over the last few days, I did manage to pass on greetings from those who reacted to an earlier post on FB. Susan says those thoughts made him so happy. So long, Lou, and thanks for your being a great friend to many people around the world.   Other tributes from former MN contributors:   Many best wishes came in over the last few days, all of which were read to him by Susan. This included:  Victor Goonetilleke in Sri Lanka writes: I enjoyed the clever jingles he made but also the many contributions to Media Network on changes to digital radio. I was happy to meet him in Washington DC after an SWLFEST and Lou helped me fulfill a teenage DX dream as I listened to VOA and JFKs final rites in 1963; To visit the Eternal Flame at Arlington National Cemetery. Lou took me there and then gave me a fantastic tour of DC. We always remember great friends like that with great affection. It is friends like Lou who make the hobby (?) of DXing, SWLing so fine..the highlight is not only in the signals that come through sitting alone in your shack. Take care Lou and all the very best my friend.   Tom Sundstrom in New Jersey: I am very sorry to hear of Lou's illness and I hope he recovers quickly. Lou and I often exchanged phone calls and notes while we were both associated with MN. The MN work was fun and interesting. I can't believe so many years have intervened. Space interests me too; the JUNO precision orbit insertion was bloody amazing!   Richard Cuff: I remember Lou joining us for an SWL Fest in Pennsylvania in the mid-2000s, where he presented a great retrospective on WRUL / WNYW, the commercial shortwave station with its heyday in the 1960s. And, of course, I remember him very well from Media Network. Lou, hope you get well soon!   John Figliozzi: Lou, I too recall with great fondness the presentation you gave at the Winter SWL Fest now several years ago about WNYW--Radio New York Worldwide. It was one of the first shortwave stations I tuned in on my then brand new Heathkit GR-54 receiver. I listened to the station regularly and it was great to experience such a thorough history and background of the station that only you were able to provide. It was clear that we shared a love for that broadcaster. It was great to meet you then and to link a face with a voice that I heard regularly on Radio Netherlands' Media Network. I am sorry to hear of your health issues and hope that this small message of support can help in some tiny but significant and ultimately successful way. Godspeed.

May 2022: This is a re-issue of a file first published in 2012, but which was buried on this archive site. Following comments on Facebook, I have re-released it. This is what you get if you take three production CDs that I used in the Media Network studio from 1995-2000 and fire them off one by one. It turns into 85 minutes of nostalgia with the daft jingles and promos we made to parody international broadcasting in the nineties. Ised the Dalet Workstation to make most of these - because it was the only way to do multirack mixes at Radio Netherlands. Before that we made jingles in the studio using complicated mixes of bit of tapes spliced together using razor blades. Was it efficient? No. Was it fun. Yes. Radio Netherlands had a broadcast licence to use commercial music, so that made it possible to make these kind of jingles. We weren't trying to make any money out of the montages. We tended to use new music, the idea being that new music would pop up on commercial stations later and that might trigger some people to ask "Where have I heard that before?". My thanks to the voice talents of Jim Cutler, Lou Josephs, Diana Janssen, Dennis Powell, Peter Barsby, Peter Spinks, Nick Meanwell, George Wood, Gene Reich, the late Paul Holmes (before he was famous in New Zealand), Spike Milligan (who was trapped in a studio during a news bulletin), Pete Myers, and Kenny Everett (broadcasters prayer). This edition includes a mean Christmas contest promo, Media News from Victor Goonetilleke and we talk to special guest Karl Rossiter, on the future of digital television and radio. At that time, the economic downtown in Asia had actually stimulated the broadcasting business to tighten its belt and look for alternative technologies. Karl predicted that costs could be cut to 1/5th if IP protocols were adopted. TV New Zealand was running a couple of networks on servers as early at 1998. Note Karl's use of the word Hybrid, because that word seems to be very much in vogue again now, 12 and a bit years later. Actually, I would argue that digital radio has been rather slow to see the advantages of a hybrid approach - using broadcast for mass distribution and IP technology to narrowcast things like profile driven commercials or specialist programming. Karl was spot on - and I see he is still in the business (at least according to Linked-In). So who remembers the radio stations that operated from the Forts in the 1960's? They were trying to break the monopoly of the BBC but choosing to use abandoned WWII anti-aircraft defenses built in the North Sea rather than the ships used by Radio Veronica and Caroline. The answer is that plenty of people still remember those broadcast pioneers, as I discovered at the Radioday.nl in the Casa400 hotel in Amsterdam on November 13th 2010. That lead to a request to dig up this show from August 13th 1998 in which we reviewed a new CD about the Forts, containing interviews from those involved. I see those CDs are still around - judging from the displays of offshore memorabilia. This show also included a great opening from Jim Cutler hinting at the crowded shortwave bands. Rocus de Joode was in the frequency coordination meeting in KL. Frederick Noronha submitted a piece about community radio in India. It is a shame that it didn't take off as fast as the commercial FM. The programme ends with the review of the double CD about screaming Lord Sutch and his fort adventures.

In August 1992, Media Network contributor Lou Josephs took me in his car to a poison-ivy infested ruin on a hill over-looking the Atlantic Ocean. It was from this point in Scituate, Massachusetts that WRUL, WNYW and WYFR broadcast programmes for several decades. Lou was working then for WROR in Boston, but in earlier years he had a Saturday job working in the New York City offices of WNYW. Luckily he also owned one of the first cassette recorders (so new they didn't know how to pronounce it on DXing Worldwide). I always thought that at its peak in the late 60's the station radiated remarkable energy. Perhaps it was because distance still had magic. More from Lou are still floating around the Internet. Thanks to Jim Cutler for the photo of the old WNYW site. Lou tells me that Larry Yount has passed away. He was a versatile news anchor in New York City in the 1960s and 1970s, working at stations that included WVNJ, WRFM (and its sister shortwave station, WNYW) and WQXR. Yount died August 25th 2011 in Hickory, N.C.; he was 77.  Larry was Program Director for 3 years or so at WNYW and voiced DXing WorldWide  He is the host of the media WNYW clip, the guy with the "k set" pronunciation problem.
