Every family has their unique brand of yuletide joy, and on our latest episode, the warmth of the season comes alive with laughter and nostalgia. I, alongside my cherished guests Steve Trott and Jeremy Schreifels, peel back the layers of our holiday festivities, revealing the intimate and sometimes hilarious traditions that cement the bonds of family. Jeremy unveils the serenity of his Christmas Eve, a night reserved for thoughtful gift exchanges and the quiet anticipation of Santa's visit, while Steve's home echoes with the lively footsteps of nine children and the solemnity of midnight mass, painting a vibrant picture of a Christmas steeped in Roman Catholic traditions. As the embers of our conversation glow, we unpack the emotional toll of the season's expectations, questioning how to maintain the essence of giving in an era often dimmed by the glare of commercialism. Steve's mysterious absence from my Christmas card list sparks a playful debate, reflecting on the joy and confusion of this enduring tradition and how it's managed to survive the digital age's relentless pace. Join us as we wrap ourselves in the festive spirit and explore the cherished customs that make Christmas a time of heartfelt reflection and celebration.
"Our job as a leader or a parent is to keep our people emotionally, psychologically, and physically safe." Episode Highlights 001:07 Importance of leaders building trust and openness 04:45 Open communication crucial for understanding in relationships. 09:00 Confirming, addressing, and neutralizing disrespectful behavior in the workplace. 12:36 Becoming aware of personal responsibility, taking action. 13:24 Understanding self-improvement, take action, communicate, and address issues in leadership. Resources The Cockerell Academy About Lee Cockerell Mainstreet Leader The Peril of Not Keeping in Touch with the Front Line One of the biggest mistakes I see leaders make is not keeping in touch with the front line. We recently had someone ask what to do when a manager has not been treating staff with respect, causing upheaval within the organization. There are a few ways to address issues like this and regain the trust and respect of the team. But if you want to know what's going on, you have to spend time being out and about with your employees. You have to spend time building comfortable relationships with your team. If you are not staying connected with the front line, it becomes more challenging to handle managerial issues that are impacting the organizational culture. Despite the convenience of virtual meetings, nothing replaces the power of face-to-face interaction. It's essential for leaders to engage with their teams beyond meetings. More positive interactions foster trust, connection, and the opportunity to address issues before they escalate. When managerial misconduct is identified, swift and decisive action is necessary. Whether it's holding tough conversations, demoting, or terminating, addressing issues is crucial to safeguard the team and organizational culture. Leaders must take ownership of their team's well-being. By admitting faults, initiating change, and ensuring a safe and open work environment, leaders can cultivate trust and support within their teams. Transparency and open communication are vital in leadership. There is a lot of power in admitting mistakes when you are wanting to make positive changes. Make sure to listen to this episode to learn more about ways to stay connected with the front line. This is a great conversation on addressing management issues with transparency and empathy, reinforcing the importance of taking responsibility and driving positive change. Being aware of the dynamics within an organization is what will help you create a culture of trust and respect in the workplace. Jemma Davidson, RNIB Customer Voice Insight Coordinator shares the latest opportunities for blind and partially sighted people to get involved in with RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey. Opportunities highlighted this week included: Gym Buddy: A new database to match BPS people with gym buddies. Millie is a See Sport Differently Champion based in Worcestershire. She is working on a project to create a gym buddy database, similar to the Find a Guide Database for finding a guide runner. Millie is a former personal trainer and is hoping that the new database could help increase access to gyms for blind and partially sighted people. The hope is that the database will connect users with volunteers who have signed up to support visually impaired individuals in using their local gym. Such support would include guiding people around the facilities and equipment. In order to develop this concept further and make Gym Buddy a reality, Millie is looking for people to fill out a survey she has created. This will help Millie gain some valuable feedback on the idea and gauge interest. If you would like to help Millie then do send her an email via hayter87@googlemail.com Are you an RNIB Volunteer? To celebrate the amazing contribution volunteers make to the RNIB we're holding an online ‘Keeping In Touch' session from 1-2pm on 5 December which, fittingly, is International Volunteers Day. It's a chance for volunteers to connect with other volunteers and you can join online or by phone, whatever suits best. Register now by calling 0303 123 9999. Case Study Opportunity The RNIB business services team are looking to do case studies of people who have benefitted from their services, so if you have benefitted from the accessible payment card of Nationwide or Mastercard and are willing to be interviewed about your experience, please contact rakib.hasan@rnib.org.uk for more details. Emotional Support Groups for people with sight loss in Employment RNIB's Counselling and Wellbeing Team, in conjunction with the Employment Advice Team, would like to invite people with sight loss who are currently in employment to take part in a pilot project providing a forum for people to discuss the emotional impact of sight loss in a workplace setting. This week me (Frankie Tortora) and him (Steve Folland) have a chat in response to an excellent question from Dex Sorbet AKA Anonymous. They say:“I've worked on two excellent projects for a really high profile client in the past year. When the projects finally went live I dropped them an email to say how great they were and how happy I was to have been a part of them. I got a lovely reply that ended with — ‘please do keep in touch for any future projects that might be up your street.' But I don't quite know what to do with that! How can I turn that vague and polite sign-off into something I can be proactive about? Do I send occasional emails to say “Hi” in the hope that they might have something in the works? Or will that make me seem a bit desperate? How do I maintain a relationship with a client who might have work in the future without being a bit weird?”• • •This episode is supported by AXA Business InsuranceAt AXA Business Insurance, we know that running any small business is hard work; but making your freelance business a success while looking after the kids can be a real challenge. This is Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day. Sixty seconds on Wisdom, Success and Personal Growth. We're focusing on growth with 30 Days of New Habits. How often do we hear, “Let's keep in touch”, and then never follow through?! Make a habit to keep in touch. And thanks to social media, we can do it fairly easily today! But, do your best to make a habit to send that text; actually make that phone call or send your promised email. ‘Like” or “share” something or make a comment on Facebook, Twitter or any other favorite social media, to an individual, not a general status update. Have we lost our ability to truly stay connected human to human? Give a hug; a smile; connect with somebody. I know you're busy, but connecting has health benefits and boosts your mood! And, when someone does it for you, respond. Don't just simply say, “let's keep in touch”. Make keeping in touch a habitual activity, not just for today, but every day. It'll build your personal and professional connections and foster's growth! This has been Kelly Orchard's Apple A Day. …Now, go out and be fruitful.
