On this week's show, the hosts begin by asking the question: What even is Garfield? Jim Davis' overfed, Monday-hating (even though he's jobless) cultural figure first appeared in comic strips in the late 1970s, and since then, has been surprisingly resilient, most recently conquering the summer box-office with The Garfield Movie. But who is Garfield, and more perhaps more importantly, why is he a thing? To answer these questions, each host watched (or endured) a different Garfield entity, including Garfield: The Movie (2004), Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (2006), and the latest film starring Chris Pratt as the titular cat. Then, the three discuss suspense and its nature in relation to fiction, inspired by Kathryn Schulz's essay for The New Yorker, “The Secrets of Suspense.” It's a curious, fantastic essay that questions the human impulse to know what happens next. Finally, it's a visit from the Gabfest's oldest and closest Friend of the Pod, June Thomas, who speaks with the panel about her essential new book, A Place of Our Own: Six Spaces That Shaped Queer Women's Culture.  In the exclusive slate Plus segment, the hosts answer a listener question from Evana: “What is a cultural reference that really bugs Steve/Julia/Dana when they see/hear it being misused or misinterpreted?” We're taking submissions for Summer Strut 2024! Phil & Jake rank iconic comic actor Bill Murray, BIC lighters, and cake sprinkles on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook). We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Phil talks about how he uses antiquated stoner terminology to describe the workings of asthma inhalers. It's not that he's committed to the stoner lifestyle but that they have the best terms for describing things like that. "This albuterol is cashed." "You can have green hit on this Xopenex." Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn starred in Foul Play which is pretty good and is set in San Francisco. When Phil lived in NYC he was homesick and made it a point to watch movies set in SF. Jake surmises the name of the movie is Lucky Chances Casino, which is the name of a Bay Area casino. We talk about a lot of Bill Murray movies, including Caddyshack, Meatballs, Stripes, Ghostbusters, The Razor's Edge, Little Shop of Horrors, Ghostbusters 2, Groundhog Day, Quick Change, Mad Dog and Glory, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, Lost in Translation and Where the Buffalo Roam (which is the one we couldn't remember the name of, where he plays Hunter S. Thompson). We also discuss Scrooged, which screenwriter Michael O'Donoghue considered his greatest work. It was directed by Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon, Superman, the Twilight Zone episode where William Shatner sees a gremlin on the side of the plane) who had much broader sensibilities. "We wrote a fucking masterpiece. We wrote It Happened One Night. We wrote a story that could make you laugh and cry. You would have wanted to share it with your grandchildren every fucking Christmas for the next hundred years. The finished film was a piece of unadulterated, unmitigated shit." Bill Murray voiced the titular role in the Garfield movie (and the sequel Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties). He agreed to do it because he saw it was written by Joel Cohen and thought it was Joel Coen (who made– with his brother– Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing, the Big Lebowski, Hudsucker Proxy and Fargo).  The documentary that Jake watched about Murray's real-life antics is called The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned from a Mythical Man.  Bill Paxton rules as Chet in Weird Science. Bruce Springsteen wrote “Hungry Heart” for the Ramones and “Because the Night” was written for Patti Smith. We had an extra special guest for this episode and it was a long time coming. This week, our 5-year-old daughter Stella joins us to discuss the “Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties”. During the episode, Melissa admits that she didn’t know this movie was a sequel, Stella constantly sasses her parents throughout, and it is decided that Jennifer Love Hewitt is not a particularly talented actress. No wine was consumed during this family film. Instead, we enjoyed a nice Banana Pineapple Orange juice that was healthy and delectable. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Meet Frankie and Browser, two cats who have nothing to do with each other. Their only connection appears to be that their owners both use Facebook. What a small world! This might be the first time a movie has ever been padded out by shoehorning in a cat from Minnesota, and then to top it all off, they didn't even think to title this trainwreck, "A Tail of Two Kitties." What a missed opportunity! And speaking of missing things... When Frankie the Cat goes missing, he can only be found by Jack, renowned(?) cat tracker, possible Craigslist stalker, and inventor of the Cat Flasher, the world's dumbest way to find a missing cat. Jack is using every means at his disposal, including his own cat allergies, to find Frankie before it's time to stare into the middle distance and move on to the next case.  Along the way, we discuss a librarian who hates leash laws as much as she loves vibrators, we consider this year's Forbes list of Most Influential Cats, and we posit that the Game of Thrones showrunners have seen this documentary and took it way too much to heart.  All's well that ends well, but we gotta cut this short and get inside because the mosquitoes are starting to bite.  Featuring special guest co-host Jaime Hunt, who surely tested the strength of the Hunt marriage with this documentary find. We're suffering through and reporting back on If Only CATS Could Talk, available to stream on Amazon Prime. If you enjoy our podcast, please rate, review, subscribe, or tell a friend! Bill Murray has worked with some of the greatest actors of all time, like Odie from Garfield, himself from Garfield: Tale of Two Kitties, and a myriad of ghosts in Ghostbusters, but his biggest co-star by far is Tai the elephant in the cinematic “classic” Larger Than Life. In this episode the guys dive deep into the extremely shallow world of movies starring elephants and break down everything from hitch-hiking with an elephant, to feeding and elephant, to why Bill Murray seems to always do these weird movies. They give their top 5 elephant films of all time (there are literally six) and Kyle gives them grief for not loving Dumbo as much as he does. Kyle really loves Dumbo. Listen and subscribe!
