(Pop) Cultural Marxism, Episode 12: Megalopolis — or, the Decline and Miraculous Resurrection of American Empire

In episode 12 of (Pop) Cultural Marxism, Ajay and Isi tackle Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis (2024). Kicking off with a review of a few recent pop-cultural engagements—including an assemblage of classic vampire films (Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), among them), Mubi's restoration of The Fall (2006), Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, and a pair of streaming series about professional wrestling—the conversation turns to Coppola's reactionary would-be summa about an architect attempting to construct a techno-futuristic utopia on a plot of land in “New Rome,” an alternate-world New York City as played against Roman and early American history. Along the way, Ajay and Isi discuss Neri Oxman's faux-ecological contributions to the film's central animating macguffin, the mysterious “megalon;” the film's antipathy for the marginalized masses; its protagonist as synthesis of Caesar, Robert Moses, Walter Gropius, and The Fountainhead's Howard Roark; accidentally timely narratives of the “good guy” billionaire pitted against the “bad-guy” billionaire; and the ecofascist inclination to marry the romanticization of nature with authoritarian techno-optimism. Among the topics at hand are Coppola's disturbing, “secretly autobiographical” efforts to reaffirm himself as auteur, his baffling postmodern pastiche, the classic right-wing themes of patriarchy as a sign of order and non-normative sexual expression as a sign of decline and decadence, the film's shocking ugliness, and how Megalopolis's strange incorporation of current events betrays “a baby boomer [having read] a bunch of airport history books.”

Donald Trump wasn't supposed to give a closing statement at the New York AG's civil trial, but he gave a brief one anyway — and why not? Michael Flynn has a performative defamation lawsuit against Andrew Weissmann, over the allegation that he was actually guilty of the crime he pleaded guilty to. And Bill Ackman says he'll sue Business Insider for reporting that his wife, former MIT professor Neri Oxman, committed plagiarism — though really, Oxman would have to sue, and an unwinnable lawsuit (as it looks to be) is likelier to serve his PR goals rather than hers.Visit serious trouble.show to sign up for our newsletter and to support our show. This week, we dig into the latest front into the so-called hit piece. Last week, Business Insider published a pair of stories that dug into the academic record of Neri Oxman, a former MIT professor. Oxman happens to be the wife of Bill Ackman, a powerful activist investor who has been on a campaign against the leaders of top universities, including Harvard's Claudine Gay, who resigned a week ago after plagiarism accusations. The Wall Street Journal meanwhile continued its scrutiny of Elon Musk with a piece that looked into his drug use and whether it has negatively impacted his stewardship of his companies and the requirements of federal law since Starlink is a government contractor. The pieces raise the question of what a fair target for accountability journalism, and whether drug use is the issue or behavior exhibited during drug use (or without drugs of any kind, outside the intoxicant of ego). Finally, we consider the Apple Vision Pro and the prospect of people on planes with it strapped to their faces.Troy Young's People vs Algorithms newsletterBrian Morrissey's The Rebooting newsletterAlex Schleifer's Universal EntitiesFollow Alex, Brian and Troy on Twitter

An independent review panel cleared her of misconduct, but the allegations continued and led to her resignation. Now Ackman's wife, Dr. Neri Oxman, is also being accused of plagiarism in her academic work.    In the aftermath of Dr. Gay's resignation from Harvard, here's how Ackman has responded to the allegations against his wife. The media needs to start accurately reporting what is happening and stop falling for self-evident ploys which enable events such as what recently happened to ex Harvard President Claudine Gay. Four Iranian emigrants talk about their homeland one year after the death of Masha Amini, and Laurent Uhres tells us about the inspiration behind his book. Iran - the situation one year on Masha Amini died on 16 September 2022, aged just 22 years, in the hands of the morality police in Tehran, Iran. Since then, there's been international coverage of the bravery of other women, and men, in the face of the morality police. Mass protests, crackdowns, women defying the defined dress code... things seem to have taken an immovable turn towards personal choice for women. My guests include Vahid Beheshti, an Iranian-born British independent journalist Human Rights Activist, and Director of DorrTV. He went on a 72 day hunger strike camping outside the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to ask the UK government to proscribe the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) an international terrorist organization, now backed by 125 MPs. Shabnam Sabzehi is an Iranian-American activist living in Luxembourg since 2014. Shabnam left Iran aged just 17 and has not been able to return since. After Mahsa Amini's death, Shabnam has been busy amplifying the voices of #WomanLifeFreedom movement. Shabnam is the co-founder of Iranian Diaspora Luxembourg. Nahid Mohammadi worked in the banking sector in Iran for 14 years and talks to us about that experience. She moved to Luxembourg in 2017 to pursue an MSc at the university here. Hooman Eslami brings us the Bahai perspective. His family faced discrimination due to their faith. Bahais are not allowed to study in official universities and so have founded their own, unofficial institution, BIHE University, despite government pressure to shut it down. In 2017, Hooman relocated to Luxembourg to pursue a master's degree, and now PhD at the University of Luxembourg. All of these guests are putting their own life and their families lives at risk in Iran by speaking out. "Creative Convergence" Laurent Uhres is a Luxembourger living in Poland. Throughout his life, Laurent has combined tech knowledge, innovation, education and music in a whole range of careers. This has culminated in his book, Creative Convergence, which delves into the connections between disciplines, demonstrating their interdependence and collective potential for innovation. By examining the fusion of art, science, engineering, and design, the book reveals how interdisciplinary collaboration can lead to remarkable breakthroughs and shape our world. The book presents a rich tapestry of inspiring examples and compelling stories of individuals and teams who have pushed the limits of human knowledge and creativity. The book was inspired by the "Abstract: The Art of Design" episode on Netflix about and with Neri Oxman. Neri introduces "The Krebs Cycle of Creativity," a concept based on the Krebs cycle in biochemistry. Her cycle provides insights into the interplay of science, engineering, design, and art. As the Museum of Modern Art's senior curator of architecture and design as well as its director of R&D, Antonelli consistently expands notions and definitions of what might be considered “design,” and shows how, in no uncertain terms, design connects to practically everything we see, touch, hear, taste, smell, and do. With great passion and energy, she is the ultimate clear-eyed booster of this wide-ranging realm she holds dear. Antonelli's most recent output—the book Design Emergency: Building a Better Future (Phaidon)—is not only an outgrowth of her prolific 28-year career at MoMA (during which she has worked on related projects including the 2005 exhibition “Safe: Design Takes on Risk,” the 2015 book Design and Violence, and the 2019 Triennale di Milano exhibition “Broken Nature: Design Takes on Human Survival”), but also a result of the pandemic. During lockdown in spring 2020, Antonelli, together with the British design critic and writer Alice Rawsthorn, conceived and launched @designemergency on Instagram, a still-ongoing feed that highlights voices central to key global issues, all of them related to improving the world through design. The effort is yet another example of Antonelli's talent for synthesizing a vast array of provocative projects, designers, products, and ideas; bringing them to the forefront; and giving them much-needed attention. On this episode, Antonelli talks with Spencer about time as a frustration, the myth of speed, the importance of going with the flow, and the many design emergencies constantly taking place all around us.Special thanks to our Season 5 sponsor, L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:Full transcript[04:15] Museum of Modern Art[04:15] @curiousoctopus[05:38] Objects of Design: From the Museum of Modern Art[06:09] “Machine Art”[12:54] “Humble Masterpieces”[15:44] “Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design”[17:42] “Design and the Elastic Mind”[25:14] “Neri Oxman: Material Ecology”[29:34] Design Emergency[29:34] Alice Rawsthorn[33:43] @design.emergency[45:18] “Items: Is Fashion Modern?”[47:02] The 3,000-Year History of the Hoodie[51:03] “Safe: Design Takes On Risk”[01:04:45] Design and Violence

2.00" Paul Galvin, Kerry GAA legend, as you've never heard him before. He tells how his continuing 8 year collaboration with Dunnes Stores started, how he hand delivered his autobiography to Dunnes supremo Margaret Heffernan. After ten years of teaching he grew tired of the repetition, he was no longer enthused. He was, however, always enthused by design, even a simple Mitre football he looked at as a 'lovely object of design'. He says he's probably a frustrated architect and he has a BIG interest in 'bio-architecture', something he learnt about from a Netflix series called 'Abstract' and Israeli architect called Neri Oxman. based at MIT. He looks at stadia on Google Maps, and draws inspiration from their beautiful shapes. He he makes a connection between the GAA and Dunnes Stores, as part of the Irish cultural heritage. The first connection was made when he sent his book, 'In my own words' to GAA fan Margaret Heffernan on the instigation of Irish Independent journalist Bairbre Power.Comparing Paul Galvin with another Dunnes Stores brand, Paul Costello, Paul G. says he has no plans to expand outside men's clothing and footwear, where he says there's plenty of space to expand. However he does mention 3D mugs and references Kerry based 3D printers WAZP who previously joined TeamGBS.19.00" Paul talks about 'his club', his newly launched 'side hustle', the Keohane Athletic Club. I’m not a mother of children, but I’m a different type of mother where my approach to design is more in line with nature. It’s less about dictating and more about editing and listening and allowing something to grow. So I nourish and let the material express what it wants to be. – Neri Oxman Si les pica la curiosidad dale play a este “Design Story” y descubre como la maternidad más que un reto de la vida es un diseño que nunca se termina.

Intro: Minutes 0 to 8 I’ve been watching the new season of The Great British Baking Show with my mom, which Chandra loves too. Chandra is watching the docuseries Country Music on PBS by Ken Burns. We talk about Johnny Cash being a huge celebrity and friends with Bob Dylan and what a great show this is. We’re both hopeful after news of an impeachment inquiry, which is putting Chandra in a good mood. I don’t think he’ll be impeached but that it might mean we’re spared four more years. Emmys: Minutes 8 to 11:30 I have trouble falling asleep after big awards ceremonies. Chandra can fall asleep without a problem except on Oscars night. Big winners at the Emmys this year were Fleabag, which Hecate watched but didn’t love, Chernobyl and Game of Thrones. I watched Chernobyl and wish some of the actors would have won instead of the writers. Chandra avoided it because of what a downer it was. Game of Thrones won because it was their last season. Peter Dinklage won despite his character’s lousy story arc. Royals: Minutes 11:30 to 23 We got to see Baby Archie who is huge and looks “scooped out of his daddy’s ass,” as Chandra puts it. Archie is adorable and looks like he’s got a lot of personality. Meghan has been wearing simple, uncontroversial outfits on this African tour. I’ve liked her looks and think she’s trying to keep the focus on her visits. Chandra wishes Meghan hadn’t repeated so many looks from her last tour, especially since she wore a $13,000 dress to a wedding in Rome. She talks about the controversy over Meghan’s hair being half covered, but still hanging out during her visit to a mosque. I thought that was deliberate so she wasn’t criticized for trying too hard. Neither of us liked her dress at that visit, which was baggy and olive-colored. We both liked her black Everlane jumpsuit and her Martin Grant maxi dress. Minute 18: Princess Beatrice got engaged to a guy named Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi . Her ring is pretty but understated. It’s a similar design to Meghan’s ring. We agree that it’s not worth the £300,000 that The Sun says it’s worth. Chandra wonders how much of a blue blood Edoardo is and calls him “trash adjacent,” which is definitely true now. Demi Moore: Minutes 23 to 28 Demi Moore said in her new book that she had threesomes with Ashton Kutcher, that they left her feeling ashamed, and that Ashton Kutcher cheated on her during their marriage. We’ve know Ashton is a cheater for years because two different mistresses came out, on the record, to gossip outlets at the time. Chandra reminded me of that time that Scott Eastwood said his girlfriend cheated on him with Ashton, when Ashton was married. Ashton’s response to Demi’s book was petty and lame but we had to logout of Twitter to see it because he blocked both of us years ago. Chandra talks about her tweet on Emmy’s night calling out Tim Allen for being a Maga, which went viral and drew the attention of the Maga loonies. By saying Ashton is an a-hole we’re not saying Demi is a saint. Brad Pitt: Minutes 28 to 31 Brad Pitt is covering US Magazine with the news that he has a new girlfriend, a 50-year-old jewelry designer and holistic healer named Sat Hari Khalsa. We think it’s cool that she’s age-appropriate for Brad, who is 55. Chandra mentioned the news that Sat Hari was allegedly a sober companion to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, which may explain how she met Brad. I found the website for her jewelry line and the pieces are Indian-influenced and crazy expensive. I ask Chandra if Brad is both leaking the news that he’s with this woman and then denying it. She said she thinks that’s the case, because he did that with Neri Oxman. User Questions: Minutes 31 to 34:30 Maggie asked us in a text if we have any LeAnn Rimes and Eddie Cibrian news which didn’t make the site. They did contact us and I got a lawyer involved as I explain. My decision about that matter was based on LeAnn naming Celebitchy in a lawsuit against another blogger who had recorded a phone call with LeAnn and posted it. That lawsuit was dismissed. We haven’t heard about LeAnn in a while but assume that Eddie is cheating on her because that’s who he is. I thank LaUnica Angelina and Lila who both gave us nice feedback! Comments of the Week: Minutes 34:30 to 38 My comments of the week are from Luna and Original LaLa about Hillary Clinton’s awesome new look and the impeachment party dress code. Chandra’s comments of the week are from Jenns and Diana on the post about Jennifer Lopez’s shady 1998 interview. Thanks for listening bitches! Our number to text or leave a message is 434-218-3219.

Neri Oxman is simultaneously a hardcore ecologist, evocative futurist, meticulous artist, and abstract scientist. The 43-year-old Israeli-American designer, architect, inventor, and MIT Media Lab professor embodies the same dualities that her work hinges upon. Oxman’s multifarious projects transcend the digital age; Oxman’s multifarious projects transcend the digital age; instead, she’s pioneering the “Biological Age” through “material ecology,” which fuses biology and technology, nature and culture, and the grown and made. Among her works are energy-generating photosynthetic wearables, a geometric dome spun by a robotic arm and completed by a swarm of silkworms, and sinewy masks modeled, in part, after the wearer’s own anatomical and physiological makeup—projects as functional and ideologically ambitious as they are beautiful. Outstanding in their aesthetic rigor, Oxman’s brainchildren have caught the attention of leading museums, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. This fall, she will receive SFMOMA's 2019 Contemporary Vision Award, and her next exhibition, “Material Ecology” at MoMA (on view from Feb. 22 to May 25, 2020), organized by Paola Antonelli and Anna Burckhardt, will present eight works from throughout her 20-year career—most notably an updated version of “Totems,” an array of vehicles for synthetically engineered melanin that debuted earlier this year in the Antonelli-curated “Broken Nature” exhibition at the Triennale in Milan. Having pursued architecture after dropping out of medical school, Oxman went on to study at the Architectural Association in London and, later, at MIT, where after earning a Ph.D. she stayed on to become a professor and now leads the pathbreaking Mediated Matter group. On this episode of Time Sensitive, Oxman and Spencer Bailey delve into motherhood, “fossils of the future,” robotic queen bees, death masks, and more.

We swear, no BIG or Trump on this episode. We discuss the donation of Lautner's breathtaking Sheats-Goldstein house, complete with jungle, nightclub and infinity tennis court, to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, to become the museum's first acquired piece of architecture (along with a sizable endowment for maintenance). The U.S. saw a major step forward into the realm of driverless cars, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told Google that its computers in autonomous vehicles could legally be counted as drivers, while the internet ogled Nissan's self-parking office chairs. It's also that time of year again, when the AIA announces the keynote speakers for its National Convention (check out our podcast on last year's convention in Atlanta), and this year's threw us for a loop – first, actor Kevin Spacey was named as Day 1 speaker, and praised for his "disruption" of "appointment television". Neri Oxman will give the Day 2 keynote, a very solid choice if not somewhat experimental for the AIA crowd. Then, a big kahuna – Rem Koolhaas was named Day 3 speaker, with a talk titled "Delirious Philadelphia" (where the Convention will take place this year). We mull over the rationale behind such a smattering of keynotes, and take a look back at prior keynotes. Lastly, we tackle a brazen piece by architect Duo Dickinson, that claims contemporary architecture has changed from a respectable, pragmatic profession into a lifestyle choice.

Drawing on the work of Neri Oxman with her use of biomaterials and 3d printing for the design exploration Mushtari, and considering the popular examples of Henri Damon and Oscar Pistorius, Laini Burton investigates the use of prosthetic organs as wearable art in fashion industry and biodesign. From cosmetic surgery and extreme body modification to the design of astrobiological artefacts that could host life, she questions the agentic capacity of synthetic biology in our perception of liveness. The podcast also talks about the ideas of fiction and suspension of disbelief in design from the speculative and the contestable approaches.
