Here at Dig Me Out we spent the last ten years starting each new season by looking back at the albums from each year that stood the test of time, disappeared without a trace, and everything in between. We kicked off with a roundtable in 2015 and revisited the albums of 1995, so it made sense to start a new series of roundtables in 1995 as well. This time we're checking out the singles of each year, looking at the year-end Modern Rock/Alternative and Hot 100 charts in the US, as well as charts from Canada, the UK and Australia for comparison. Like with all roundtables, we enlisted the help of some special guests to revisit this interesting transitional year that saw the rise of the second generation of grunge bands like Bush and Silverchair, the continued success of 1994's pop-punk breakthroughs by Green Day and The Offspring, and the juggernaut that was Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette. But that doesn't tell the entire tale, so former A&R executive and audio tech writer James Barber and music writer Kevin Alexander join us to talk about all the hits, the near misses, and the weirdness that was 1995. Lastly, our third guest, S.W. Lauden aka Steve Coulter was unable to attend due to the tragic loss of his and his family's home in the Eaton, CA. fires. We had the pleasure of joining our friend, and frequent guest, Matt Carlson on the podcast portion of his new project, What Am I Making, back on March 27, 2023. Matt is a talented musician and songwriter from East Lansing, Michigan, whom Barry met as part of an online community created by Pete Dominick, the host of the Stand Up With Pete Dominick podcast. During one of their weekly hangouts, Matt shared the name of his latest band, Harborcoat. Barry caught the R.E.M. connection, which led to a Pops on Hops episode to discuss the album Joy is Elusive. The outtakes alone from that conversation also led to a Pops on Hops bonus episode to discuss Matt's Top Five R.E.M. albums. Matt has also contributed songs to our Christmas bonus episodes in both 2021 and 2022. So, obviously, when Matt asked Abigail and Barry to chat about the Pops on Hops podcast, they jumped at the chance! It is a fabulous discussion of the origin story of the Pops on Hops podcast! Wait, is that not normal? Well, thankfully Sarah and Nippy aren't the only ones who've experienced this. Gwenith Kikkawa (they/them) and Kevin Alexander (they/them) are multiple-cult survivors, meaning they've experienced culty horrors not just once (like a great majority of our guests), but numerous times. S. E. Boyd is the creation of veteran journalists Kevin Alexander and Joe Keohane, and editor Alessandra Lusardi. All lightly damaged Catholics prone to extensive over-analysis, Alexander, Keohane, and Lusardi have, between them, authored four books, edited dozens more, and written for Esquire, The Atlantic, and The New Yorker, among others. Alexander also won a James Beard Award for food writing, a fact Keohane and Lusardi are both tired of hearing about. They joined me on Uncorking a Story to talk about their first novel, The Lemon. Key Topics: How our celebrity-obsessed culture influenced the book's premise, and their particular fascination with what they call “the Celebrity-Death-Industrial Complex.” Their unique writing process, and why it has more in common with a TV writers' room than typical novel-writing. Why the character at the center of the book is called John Doe: “In dying famous, he became the property of others; he is a cipher for whatever you want him to mean to you.” Their backgrounds in the food industry, print and digital media, and publishing, and how that insider knowledge informs THE LEMON Why they were drawn to writing about the food world – and why food celebrities are “often the most entertaining.” Their research for the book, and how various plot threads – about music, Belfast and Northern Ireland, upscale design firms, and more – came to be. Fifty-five years ago, newborn screening was born. At the time, though, that little heel prick was performed to screen for only one condition: phenylketonuria (PKU). Without early intervention, babies born with PKU faced severe cognitive, behavioral and other neurological disorders. The advent of PKU newborn screening allowed health care providers and families to make critical changes to a baby’s diet to prevent those consequences. Today, December 3, is PKU Awareness Day. It’s hard to say where newborn screening would be without that first PKU test. And 55 years later, it’s hard to say where newborn screening would be without the families and individuals living with PKU who have shared their stories to convey the value of this simple test. One of those individuals is Kevin Alexander. Kevin has been a leader in the PKU community simply by sharing his story and his experiences living with PKU. He has spoken at conferences and events around the world, created a video documentary about his life, served as a leader and friend to others living with PKU, and now he shares his voice in a new podcast. For this PKU Awareness Day, we are sharing Kevin’s podcast, PKU Life Podcast with Kevin Alexander. Throughout this podcast, you’ll hear from the co-producer and director for the Week as well as many people working to ensure the events run smoothly. You'll also hear from new and veteran designers as they explain why they love seeing their pieces worn on the runway. Massif Fashion Week is one of the few fashion events based in a photography and film studio, and it brings together an incredible mix of designers, students, models, and buyers. This episode is one not to be missed! Denver’s Massif Fashion Week is great for designers of all ages and backgrounds Larger cities are often famously tied to high-end fashion. Think of NYC and LA. But Massif Fashion Week in Denver is evolving into a must-attend event for designers. It’s logistically easier to attend and more financially feasible for designers just starting out. From the early design stages to final fittings before hitting the runway, it all culminated during the week’s events. My designer interviewees describe the joy they feel when a buyer finds a perfect piece or when a collection exceeds everyone’s expectations. That’s what makes live events like Massif so incredible. You don’t want to miss hearing these stories first hand, so be sure to listen. You need THESE skills to successfully work fashion week events In order to successfully work at fashion weeks, you have to be comfortable in high-stress, high-anxiety situations. There are countless moving pieces that must be organized in order for events to run smoothly. If you're guilty of being a 'nice guy', you know how frustrating it is to hear women tell you they're 'just not feeling it'...right before they banish you to the dreaded Just Be Friends zone. But WHY does this happen...especially when all women ever talk about is how much they want to find a 'nice guy'? If you're who they really want, then why do so many hot, sexy women end up with idiots and jerks instead? Well, in this episode I'm joined by the host of the Nice Guy Dating Podcast himself, Kevin Alexander. Get ready for a completely different take on what's wrong with the 'nice guy' persona, and how you can get out from under it and start making women genuinely 'feel it' for you, for a change. I guarantee Kevin's revolutionary thoughts on this topic, combined with one of my more epic rants all-time, will conspire to get you out of the JBF Zone and into the hearts, minds and naughty fantasies of women everywhere. Are you getting my daily newsletters yet? They're packed with solid, practical steps for attracting women: http://www.thechickwhisperer.com === HELP US SEND THE MESSAGE TO GREAT MEN EVERYWHERE === We'll keep the solid, actionable content coming...all for free.
