In this episode, we dive into the complexities of anxious attachment styles and share our personal stories, the dynamics of anxious versus avoidant attachment, and how cultural and familial influences shape our relationship patterns. As human beings, we all struggle with our fair share of self-doubt; but when it comes to running our businesses there are so many more areas for those doubts to creep in. Whether it is doubting your work, your pricing, or in the case of today's podcast guest, facing an uncomfortable situation with a client, self doubt can paralyze us and cause us to act in ways that aren't in our best interest.  Ways like: Getting Defensive Shutting Down Over-explaining Discounting out of Fear Or a host of other, less-than-helpful reactions that, if not checked, can put our businesses in jeopardy. Kerra Fischer has been a solopreneur with a thriving portrait photography business for 10 years. She is also a member of our MindShift community. She is intelligent, kind, and asks great questions. Kerra joins us today with a client dilemma and she's agreed to let me do some one-on-one coaching to help her move forward.  In our conversation Kerra opens up about a situation that she knows she needed to handle differently but didn't have the right words at the moment (sound familiar?).  Even after 18 years in business, even after refining my process over and over again, I STILL run into client conversations that set me back and make me question myself.  How I move forward is to process those interactions afterward. I replay the situation, try to diagnose the problem and analyze how I might have done it better so that, next time, I HAVE the words and I'm prepared. In today's episode, Kerra and I will role play scenarios together and discuss common problems that hold us back and how to overcome them. I hope you find something helpful for your own client interactions. Let's do the Rework! In this episode, you'll learn: Ways to explain how changes you are making benefit the client Strategies to use in uncomfortable conversations How to prepare for or prevent difficult client interactions    Here's a glance at this episode: [2:24] - Welcome to the podcast, Kerra! Kerra shares a bit about herself and her business. [3:38] - Kerra asks fantastic questions because she is willing to say that she doesn't know the answer and wants to learn. [5:29] - One of Kerra's great existing clients who hadn't had a session in a long time received a call to set up a session time, but it was after some business changes. [8:15] - In this situation, she didn't have the confidence and the right words to reassure the client. [12:18] - Because this client is one that she already has an existing relationship with, Kerra was very concerned that she upset them. [14:31] - Allison and Kerra do a roleplay scenario to provide options on what could be said to help the situation. [18:40] - When it comes to changes, existing clients may not see the benefit to them. [20:49] - Allison shares that she is quick to want to make changes, but has to slow down to see what the possible consequences are. [22:50] - In this situation, Kerra feels uncomfortable because she reached out to the client and then proceeded without letting them know of the changes. [28:13] - Allison and Kerra do a roleplay but this time they act as if Kerra had communicated the changes. [31:47] - The client doesn't care about why you made the changes. The client cares about how it benefits them. [33:50] - Get the client exactly what they want and quote them for the things that are not important. They may come back and get more later. [36:16] - Good clients will stay quiet.  [37:18] - When we talk too fast and we're trying to gloss over, it feels very shady. [39:29] - When you're not 100% sure of what you're going to say, your lack of confidence will come across as sales-y and shady. [42:32] - It will mean a lot to the client to notice their discomfort and address the concerns. [45:10] - Most portrait photographers are solopreneurs and it can be lonely. The Mindshift membership is a great way to connect and learn.   Links and Resources:  Kerra FischerWebsite | Instagram | Facebook Do The ReWorkWebsite | Instagram Allison Tyler JonesWebsite | Instagram | LinkedIn

We can feel the divide in the world - on political ideology, public health, and the environment (to name a few!) Is there a way to learn to live together, to resolve the conflict, and to restore relationships? My friend Kerra Bolton is an outstanding journalist & author who has worked as a freelance writer for CNN and is a winner of the NY Times Award for Outstanding Journalism. This week, I invited Kerra to discuss the impact of building community through restorative practices. We are diving into her take on how to build restorative communities and her journey to writing her book. She shares some tips on how to work through violations or ruptures within a community, some powerful learning and what the process of a true restorative practice looks like.  You don't want to miss her refreshing take on the way politics is evolving and playing a role in our culture, and how we can minimize divides through these restorative practices.  You know how much we love talking about growth and change on this show - come learn something with me, she has a lot to share!   Listen to episode 404 now! In episode 404 of the Embodied Podcast we discuss: (3:00) Kerra's origin story, and how she identifies with Christianity (13:25) Meeting a crazy man who ended up being a visionary (and what he taught her about societal needs) (23:15) What a true restorative practice can look like (some scripted questions to shape the conversation and why there is a need for a facilitator) (35:20) Untangling vaccines, mask mandates, and the political tug-of-war over public health issues  (45:14) Politics in relationships - values vs. solutions   For full show notes and links to all the resources and books mentioned in this episode, go to https://untameyourself.com/podcasts/404 Slide into my DMs on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/elizabethdialto/  Or slide into Kerra's DMs on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kerrabolton/

Šie principi pilnā mērā balsta grupas izstādes „New Beasts of Burden” / „Jaunie darba zvēri” idejisko augsni. Jaunas atmiņas un asociācijas izstādē „New Beasts of Burden” / „Jaunie darba zvēri” galerijā „Low” Lāčplēša ielā iespējams gūt līdz 4. jūnijam.

This week I am joined by Kerra Bolton, an award winning producer and director, as well as a writer. She is also the CEO/Founder of Woodbine Films, which specializes in first-person, narrative nonfiction that examines the meaning of community, connection, and identity in the Black community. Her directorial debut, RETURN OF THE BLACK MADONNA, is currently in production. The documentary traces her epic quest to learn to swim, dive, and map sunken slave ships with Black marine archeologists. She is also working on a book Water in my bones and we discuss both of these projects today. Kerra and I talk about her commitment to Black joy after a long career in diversity and equity work, transmuting pain and trauma into joy, the process of making a documentary and holding multiple roles in that process, and the research process for the documentary. We also talked about the importance of endurance during the film making process. In addition, we also discussed - women's health and Kerra's experience of fibroids, and the significance of the high prevalence of fibroids in Black women, learning how to swim, fear of open water and epigenetics, and so much more. This conversation went to so many places, and is a really important testimony to how we can cultivate joy in our lives, even against a backdrop of pain or trauma. Adapted from a YA fantasy novel written by the director (Chris Heimerdinger) himself, PASSAGE TO ZARAHEMLA takes teen fantasy tropes - such as unlocked supernatural abilities, time travel, and star-crossed lovers - and places them within a story fully based on the teachings of the Book of Mormon. Especially of note here is the alternate history of the Americas purported by Mormon lore - Nephites, Lamanites, and the evil Gadiantons are various indigenous American tribal factions that Mormons believe existed are direct descendants of the Biblical tribes of Israel. The film's protagonist Kerra connects, possibly romantically, with a Nephite boy she meets in an alternate dimension, and an incredible adventure unfolds. Our friend Daniela, an ex-Mormon with family still deeply involved in the church, joins us for this conversation to provide a huge amount of context that made this film make so much more sense to us. Her fascinating life story will surely aid and influence our future discussions on Mormonism and their compelling body of film work. Handling your personal finances is the first step towards adulting. At least that’s what I believe. Everything costs money. The basics of budgeting is simple. All you need is a pen and paper and some time to yourself. Look at your list of bills and then income. Do you have enough to make ends meet or are you slowly slipping into a hole? Are there some things you can cut? Then there’s the point of savings. Not only for emergencies only adulting can throw at you, but for the just because things. Do you want to say for that nice gift for yourself? Do you want to save for Christmas presents that you swore last year you will have money for this year? One step at a time, we will get there. Just because it’s “personal” finances, doesn’t mean it has to not be talked about. You’re not alone. _______ **Do you need help setting up your podcast? Today I interviewed Eliav and Revital Kling, who live in Toronto, ON. They have a diverse skillset with Revital having over 20 years experience in the Financial world and Eliav has over 20 years of experience in the IT world. Dealing with multi million dollars budgets and managing teams around the world, Revital brings the KERRA team creative financial view that can turn a good deal to a great one. Eliav started programming and testing and shifted to project management in an international company. Eliav is managing people around the world to deliver multi million dollars complex projects with the highest level of efficiency and quality in the telecom industry. Eliav brings his management skills to maximize the cooperation between our teams to increase the efficiency and profitability of our properties. Revital & Eliav started to invest in Real Estate back in 2004 when they have acquired their first investment property which they have sold several years later for a high profit. In 2009 after the economic turmoil in the US, the KERRA team identified the opportunity in the US Real Estate market and started to look for investment properties in the US. They bought their first US property in 2009 followed by several acquisitions in Florida. All properties were either short sales or foreclosures. After stabilizing those properties, they refinanced the properties and pulled the invested funds and got ready for the next phase of their investments – Multi Families. Since then they proudly own and manage 160 doors. Eliav and Kling works on a unique business model. Let's say for an example, if the initial investment is for $1M, where 75% of the investment comes from financing and 25% through Joint Venture partners, they need to raise $250,000 (25% of $1M), and each investor has to come up with minimum $50,000. Then, let's say there are 5 investors with $50,000 each will make 20% partners in the deal. As being, managing partners, Eliav & Kling work on day to day activities on the property and they charge an asset management fee based on the gross revenue of the property which is between 3-5% of the gross revenue. Also, they will be a guarantor of the mortgage. The work and time involved during closing of the deal, Kerra Investments collect acquisition fees which is roughly around 1% of the purchase price. During the sale of the property, they charge a disposition fee which is around 1% of the sale price. Then they have a profit sharing fee which is divided in to 3 tiers. For the first year, if Kerra Investments have been able to provide 0-3% of the Return on Investments to the investors, then 95% of the profit goes to investors and 5% to Eliav & Revital. In the 2nd year, if they have been able to provide 3-5% Return on Investments then 80% of the profit will go to Investors and 20% will go to Eliav & Revital. After the 3rd year, when the Return on Investments is 5% or more, then Investors and Eliav & Revital will split the profit in half. Profit sharing fee is based on the sale of the property as compared to the actual purchase price. So as an asset manager, Eliav & Revital will always work on to maximize the performance of the property to generate more income. Watch the interview here to find out how Eliav and Revital have learned structuring the deals successfully while learning from my coaching program as well as other Mentors. Kerra Bolton: How Business Activism Supports Your Business and Your Community(Episode 174)

Productive Flourishing

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 28, 2017 41:26

Today’s guest, Kerra Bolton, is a journalist turned political communication strategist turned consultant who helps people and businesses get involved in their communities through business activism. Kerra joins Charlie on the show today to discuss what business activism is, and how it’s easier and safer than people think it is. You don’t have to pick the biggest and most controversial topics and alienate your customers to make a difference in your community. Making a difference in your community makes a huge difference to your customers. Key Takeaways: [2:30] - What is business activism? To Kerra, it means using your business to take a stand on social issues and/or to help in your community in some way that makes you a community leader through your business. Also using the resources of your business to meet the challenges and opportunities of your community. [3:35] - Perhaps today more than before, there is a call for more businesses and brands to get involved at a social and political level. Historically, business activism reflects culture. There was not the same call for businesses to take a stand, but many individuals channeled their money into philanthropy. [6:03] - For Kerra, there is a distinction between volunteering (and philanthropy) and activism. Volunteering is taking actions or a series of actions to alleviate suffering in some way. Activism is a set of actions towards changing political or public policy, or making social change via the political system. Business activism is when you as a business owner are using the resources and tools of your business to solve a particular problem in the community that you serve. [8:00] - Charlie shares the Patagonia example of business activism, and the stance they’ve taken in regards to the land of the national parks. This issue is something that is relevant to their business, and part of their business heritage. [11:35] - In addition to heritage, there are some other factors for businesses to consider when taking a stance. One is authenticity - businesses should treat activism as a movement, rather than as a moment. Another thing is team support; team support can help you flesh out ideas and provides different avenues for your activism to play out. The last thing to consider is the relationship your brand has with your audience. It can serve as a portal to deeper your audience’s engagement and inspire them. [14:30] - Business activism doesn’t have to be that extreme or big. There is a range of how much you can get involved, and you can still make a difference. Kerra’s advice is to start local, and look at the needs in your community and the communities that your business serves. This allows you to get involved without necessarily having to jump into the political fray. There are some safe groups you could serve: kids, pets, the elderly, and veterans. [18:11] - Some people may feel that if they get involved in business activism that they will lose customers, and it would be safer to not get involved. There are some benefits though. Getting involved at some level allows you to be part of the change, and also businesses can carry more sway than individuals being involved. [20:50] - Kerra has a background in media and politics. She has an understanding of how government works from the local level all the way up to Congress. After journalism, she joined the North Carolina Democratic Party has a state spokesperson. Kerra has also worked as a lobbyist and helping non-profits share their stories; she’s been very involved in public policy because that what she’s seen be successful in getting things done. [22:40] - Building relationships with your politicians can help with public policy. It’s not really that hard to establish relationships with them. They like knowing what people are saying locally because they don’t receive that information. From a business perspective, prioritizing your employees ability to make appointments to meet with legislators is an indirect way where your business doesn’t have to take a stance, but still supports political involvement. [28:30] - Kerra talks about her experience working with legislators and how her tenacity and persistence helped her develop good relationships with them. [29:35] - Another facet of business activism is community and customer solidarity. As a consumer, having a business or brand stand up for what you believe in gives a sense of community. As a business, you provide solidarity and promote customer loyalty as well as a form of change together. [31:25] - There are some ways not to get involved, and Kerra shares the examples of Pepsi and Papa John’s. It is not as effective for your business to jump in on the news of the day. You want to think long-term and issue-oriented. [35:57] - Social listening is a great opportunity to figure out what your customers are thinking about certain topics. Listening to not only their pain points but also the things that they hope for can help guide your activism. [37:20] - A final thing to consider is supporting a political entity versus a policy. Your donations to political parties can be traced, and a donation can tie you to a party or person. Issue-based advocacy is really the best way to go. [39:38] - Kerra’s invitation for listeners is to get off your phones and social media, and get into your community. Look around and notice who’s not being heard, think about what you love, and do some social listening to see what’s going on. Roll up your sleeves and find a way to get involved.
