Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast

After 1994's The Stand proved to be a monumental hit, ABC and other networks were intent on bringing other Stephen King properties to the small screen. This is why we got things like The Langoliers, The Tommyknockers, Kingdom Hospital, among others. But 20 plus years later, there were once again rumblings that The Stand was going to be adapted, this time with one film for the big screen. Directors like David Yates (Harry Potter) and Ben Affleck came and went from the project, all not knowing how they were going to keep the magnum opus book to one film. Enter Josh Boone (New Mutants) and Benjamin Cavell (Justified). With James Marsters (X-Men) and Alexander Skaarsgard (Big Little Lies) amongst many others -including two extremely toxic actors with turbulent personal lives- the nine part miniseries came and went at about the worst time imaginable for a piece of fiction about a virus that wipes out the world, which was the end of 2020. Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they review all nine episodes -including a brand new coda written by King himself- and determine if this is the ultimate version of The Stand. Come back next week, as the boys start their dive into the adaptations of King's first 80s novel, Firestarter.

Nearly three decades ago, Stephen King stumbled upon a copy of Lars von Trier's Danish miniseries The Kingdom in a dusty Colorado video store. Roughly seven years later, ABC premiered Kingdom Hospital, the author's own take on von Trier's haunted hospital. While conceived as a miniseries, King was so excited about the project — developed alongside his Storm of the Century and Rose Red collaborators — that he was ready to start work on a second season. The series premiered strong, but ratings dwindled and ABC pulled the plug just months later.  Join the Losers as they unpack both the 13-episode series and King's candid thoughts about the adaptation and its swift cancellation, which he detailed in a 2004 EW column. Was it ahead of its time? Are the Twin Peaks comparisons warranted? And just how much did it inspire season 2 of American Horror Story? These questions and more — including its place in the larger canon of King's work — are discussed. Follow us on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | Patreon Learn more about your ad choices. The pair discuss low-rent '80s horror, hearing Matt Berry's voice for the first time, and how genuinely strange it is that Darkplace came out just months before King's own Kingdom Hospital, his short-lived ABC hospital horror soap. The characters team up to kill the Giantess in “Into the Woods.” Not the witch. If you read this before listening and keep that detail in mind, what follows will make a bit more sense. But after a rocky start (which is also due to Taylor's deep character flaws re: season two of The Wire), Ben, Michael, and John make a strong showing in this competition, identifying movies whose titles are complete sentences, as well as movies that contain elements that use both colorful and monochromatic palettes. And of course, it all comes down to how each will fare in the lightning round. NOTES ⚠️ Inline notes below may be truncated due to podcast feed character limits. Front Row Classics kicks off 2023 with a conversation featuring three-time Oscar nominated actress, Diane Ladd. Brandon recently sat down with Diane to discuss her latest film, Isle of Hope, directed by Damian Romay. This touching film is a testament to the power of family and working through your past to define your present and future. Ladd shares her thoughts on the film's hopeful message and why it deserves attention during this awards season. Brandon and Diane also spend time discussing her southern upbringing and relationship with daughter, Laura Dern. We also spend time with remembrances of such classics in her filmography as Rambling Rose, Chinatown and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.   Legendary actress Diane Ladd is a Golden Globe (Alice), BAFTA (Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore) and Independent Spirit Awards (Rambling Rose) winning actress who has been nominated for over 70 awards during her astonishing 7 decadelong career including three times for both an Academy Award and Golden Globe for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose for which she and her daughter actress Laura Dern made Academy history as the only mother and daughter to be nominated in the same year for the same film. Ladd is currently starring in Isle of Hope, a new feature film that opened December 9, 2022. Ladd stars as well-known actress Carmen Crawford whose daughter Victoria (Mary Stuart Masterson) blames for having crushed her dreams of becoming a playwright. But when Carmen suffers a life-threatening stroke and wakes up thinking she's living 15 years in the past, Victoria is given a unique opportunity to figure out where her life went off track and reconcile her relationship with her mother. Andrew McCarthy, Sam Robards, and Jessica Lynn Wallace co-star. Isle of Hope, written and directed by Damian Romay and produced by Omar Romay. Ladd has several films currently streaming, coincidentally all based on true events: Gigi & Nate, director Nick Hamm's coming-of-age drama based on Ned Sullivan and his capuchin support monkey Kasey, Charming the Hearts of Men starring Kelsey Grammer, Anna Friel and Sean Astin, inspired by events during the Civil rights movement in 1964 and The Last Full Measure, a true story about a young soldier's exceptional bravery and sacrifice, starring alongside Christopher Plummer, William Hurt, Samuel L. Jackson, Ed Harris. Ladd has appeared in over 200 films and television projects including director David O. Russell's Joy, director Roman Polanski's iconic Chinatown, writer John Hughes' Christmas Vacation and, The Cemetary Club with Olympia Dukakis, Ellen Burstyn & Danny Aiello which led her to produce her first film Mother in which she and Dukakis co-starred. For the small screen Ladd most recently appeared as Nell O'Brien in Hallmark's runaway hit Chesapeake Shores. Her varied television shows included her Golden Globe winning performance as Belle the singing, songwriting, waitress of the run-away hit series Alice based on her Oscar and Golden Globe winning role in the film Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. Ladd also appeared in Steven King's Kingdom Hospital and co-starred in the popular HBO series Enlightened with daughter Laura Dern. And if acting isn't enough, Ladd has co-authored a new book with daughter actress Laura Dern, titled Honey Baby Mine which hits shelves Mother's Day, May 2023 by Grand Central Publishing. 2 Ladd has authored two other books: Spiraling Through the School of Life, published by Hay House, and a book of short stories, A Bad Afternoon for a Piece of Cake, published by Ladd's company Exxcel Press. Anthony Award,  and the Palme d'or Award at the Cannes Film Festival.  She's been nominated for 3 Emmy Awards for her performances in “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman”, “Grace Under Fire” and “Touched by an Angel”.   In addition to her Oscar-nominated roles, some of her most iconic movie performances can be seen in “Chinatown”, “A Kiss Before Dying”, “Christmas Vacation”, “The Cemetery Club”, “Mrs. Munck, which she also wrote and directed, “Ghosts of Mississippi”, “Primary Colors”, “Joy”,  and one of my all-time favourites, “The Last Full Measure”, directed by Todd Robinson who appeared on our show last year.    And, in addition to the 3 TV shows I already mentioned, for which she earned Emmy nominations, she's delivered some of her most memorable television performances in dozens of shows including “Chesapeake Shores”, “Kingdom Hospital”, and “Enlightened”, once again co-starring the wonderful Laura Dern.  She's written 2 bestselling books entitled, “Spiraling Through the School of Life: A Mental, Physical and Spiritual Discovery”, and “A Bad Afternoon for a Piece of Cake”, which won the 2014 Tennessee Williams Literary Award.    And I'm very excited that she's here to talk about her newest film, entitled, “Isle of Hope”, an unforgettably poignant and moving film about a mother-daughter relationship that takes a dramatic twist when the mother has a life threatening stroke and wakes up thinking she's living 15 years in the past.   Our guest's performance as Carmen Crawford, the mother in this film, is generating enormous Oscar buzz throughout the industry.  And that's no surprise to anyone.  After all, the renowned film critic Richard Corless of Time Magazine said it best, when he wrote that this woman is one of the top ten actresses not only in America, but the whole world. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ http://www.dianeladd.com/https://www.instagram.com/rosedianeladd/https://www.twitter.com/Diane_Ladd/https://www.facebook.com/DianeLadd1/ #DianeLadd   #IsleofHope   #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Surgery.  Needles.  Scalpels.  Stitches.  Dental drills.  Chances are, seeing one of those words made you cringe a little.  But why?  Why does just reading a word related to medical procedures make so many people cringe?  From creating hideous monsters to reviving the dead, doctors have seemingly always been a staple of horror movies.  But what is more terrifying...the mad doctors of our imaginations, or going to the hospital for a very real medical procedure??     In this episode of my 60 Days of Halloween coverage, I'll be dissecting Cardiac Arrest (1980), Anatomy (2000), Dr. Giggles (1992), Pathology (2008), The Dentist (1996), and the first two episodes of Kingdom Hospital (2004) for Medical Horror Week!!    If you enjoy this episode, check back soon for more Halloween movie coverage in my 60 Days of Halloween.  Up next will be Documentary Week.   And be sure to check out more reviews

Movie Meltdown - Episode 391 (For our Patreon supporters.) This week... we talk about movies. Zombie movies and rage viruses... and high school melodrama... and slasher movies... and the Leatherface family reunion... and Stephen King stories... and one of our favorite, if not one of the most perplexing directors. All that, among many other things. And while we specifically clarify that we don't eat flesh... we eat brains, we also mention... Chicken Little, Vincent Price, hand-held action scenes, my two least favorite things about weddings and funerals, The Edge of Seventeen, putting dirt on the coffin, a button-down shirt, Dan O'Bannon, it still yips, Turk 182, as happy as you can be in a zombie apocalypse, I'm expected to look like a grown-up, just vast wasteland and dead bodies, a grim presentation, Chicken Run, The Last Man on Earth, wearing super short skirts, Tobe Hooper, even people who love it make fun of the second half, 28 Days Later, you care about those characters, From the Hip, Haley Lu Richardson, Matthew McConaughey, House of 1000 Corpses, robots and Stonehenge, it stuck with me... for a different reason, Leatherface's long lost cousin, Mick Garris, you're left with this feeling of dread and despair, the tone was light-hearted, Return of the Living Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, it's usually you bringing him up, Bill Moseley, the giant spider, Kingdom Hospital, Texas Chainsaw 3D, The Devil's Rejects, that what killed the series as it went along, it's a weird balance to those two movies, Baby Geniuses, sex comedies and Christmas movies.  "...the film was shot in fourteen days on a budget of $50,000. Well done sir." For more info on this and ALL the future episodes of Movie Meltdown, goto: https://www.patreon.com/moviemeltdown
