Cross TrainingRejoice Always in Jesus’ Good NewsRead or WatchFew phrases bring as much joy to our daughter's heart as the four words: "We're going to Disneyland!" One year, as we started driving to California, we surprised her with the news that she'd soon see Mickey — and she lost her mind! Good news has a way of bringing instant joy and anticipation (Prov. 15:30).We're Cross Training to develop our joy, one of twelve marks of the Master we're working on this year. Joy comes when we receive the gospel, build our hope, respond with thanksgiving, and teach others through evangelism. Wherever the gospel goes, joy seems to follow (e.g., Acts 2:46; 8:8,39; 13:52). What is it about the good news that gladdens people's hearts? What You Need to KnowThe gospel — or good news — declares the reign of a new King — "our God reigns!" Right before Isaiah introduces the Servant "pierced for our transgressions" (Isa. 52:13-53:12), he proclaims: "How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, 'Your God reigns'" (Isa. 52:7). The news of God's kingdom brings with it peace, happiness, and deliverance from our worst oppressors. Our king's victory is our victory. Jesus, our God and King (Isa. 9:6-7; John 20:28), arose to reign — and so we will live with him as heirs of God (Rom. 6:3-5; 2 Tim. 2:11-13; Gal. 3:26-29). Jesus has "abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel" (2 Tim. 1:10). In his death and resurrection, he defeated sin (Heb. 9:26), "triumphing over" the rulers of darkness that used to reign over us (Col. 1:13; 2:15). He came to "destroy ... the devil and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery" (Heb. 2:14-15).Imagine you're imprisoned on death row, and someone walks in and says, "you're free to go now." That's what happens when you receive the gospel: your execution stayed, your innocence declared, and your shackles unbound. It's hard even to process our enormous reversal of fortune! We don't just have hope for a better future; the gospel changes our life now, as we "rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory" (1 Peter 1:8). The burden of guilt, fear, and hatred lifted (1 John 4:10-21), we see God's love for us and discover a new identity, purpose, and strength (Eph. 3:16-21). God's Spirit leads us to different choices and a new intimacy with God (Rom. 8:13-17), mirroring Christ's closeness (Gal. 4:6).What You Need to DoMake rejoicing your "new normal" — something you "always" do (1 Thess. 5:16) and notice when it leaves you. Nehemiah counseled people not to "be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength" (Neh. 8:10). If strength comes from our joy, it shouldn't surprise us when Satan tries to bury it under a mountain of forgetfulness and trouble. There's a time to be sad (Eccl. 3:4), but our joy "in the Lord" can stabilize us even in seasons of "trouble" (Phil. 4:4-14).Don't hide your gladness. Joy can become contagious (cf. Acts 2:46-47) when you put it "on a stand" instead of under a basket (Matt. 5:14-15). The Thessalonian disciples "received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit" and "became an example to all" as "the word of the Lord sounded forth from" them (1 Thess. 1:6-8). Rejoice when you see the gospel spreading (Phil. 1:15-18; Rom. 16:19) and look for opportunities "to proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light" (1 Peter 2:9-10). Reflect often on where you'd be if you never heard about Christ. Jesus spoke of some who received the word with joy but never grew deep enough roots to persevere through difficulties (Mark 4:16-17). Some forget their first love (Rev. 2:4), but others deepen their devotion, appreciation, and joy with each passing year. May we say with the old hymn, "I love to tell the story for those who know it best seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest."Through the WeekRead (Mon) — Luke 2:22-38; Acts 8:26-39; Rom. 15:8-13; 1 Thess. 1:2-10; Isa. 52:7-53:12Reflect (Tue) — Do I allow troubles to rob me of my joy?Request (Wed) — "Oh Lord, make known to me the path of life and fill me with joy in your presence" (cf. Psalm 16:11).Respond (Thu) — Post a list of ways your salvation gives you joy somewhere others can see it.Reach Out (Fri) — How would your life be different if you never obeyed the gospel?Support the Show

In today's episode, Digital Producer Alcynna Lloyd joins HousingWire Editor in Chief Sarah Wheeler to discuss the hottest topics coming across HousingWire's news desk. During the episode, Lloyd and Wheeler review the recent news  that President Donald Trump signed the second COVID-19 stimulus bill and how it could impact homeowners. The pair also highlight what some economists say we should expect for the housing market in 2021 and discuss the housing inventory shortage and whether it will impact potential homebuyers. For more background on what is discussed, here is a preview of today's interview, lightly edited for length:HousingWire: Sarah, what stories really caught your eyes last week?Sarah Wheeler:  The stimulus bill was really the talk of all last week and then, of course, this weekend, with Trump finally signing the $900 billion stimulus bill. We were focused on both the bill and the implications for our industry as we knew it had quite a bit of an impact for renters and homeowners. Notably, we learned that many people who may have been in a good financial position prior to the pandemic could have saved the money they got from the last stimulus bill, which is really interesting. They didn't travel, and they weren't able to do many things they normally do, so they might be saving the funds. Currently, we're looking at the $600 one-time stimulus checks and the unemployment benefits that are going through. That being said, the House is also voting today on increasing those checks to $2,000. However, it's unclear if the Republican-led Senate will even vote on the amount or if it will pass. The HousingWire Daily examines the most compelling articles reported from the HousingWire newsroom. What the Riff?!?
1980 - October: Ozzy Osbourne "Blizzard of Ozz"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2020 41:01

Today Ozzy Osbourne is a household name, and arguably this debut album is where it all started.  Before Blizzard of Ozz was released, Ozzy had been fired from his position as front man for the heavy metal band Black Sabbath, and he was certain that he would “go back to Birmingham and the Dole” after that.  However, Don Arden, Black Sabbath's manager, had hoped that Ozzy would return to the group, and signed him to Jet Records to record new material in Los Angeles.  He sent his daughter to look after Ozzy and "protect his investment."  That daughter was named Sharon Arden...and would soon be famous in her own right as Ozzy's wife and manager. This album was originally intended to be a super group called Blizzard of Ozz, with Ozzy (born John Michael Osbourne, but known as Ozzy since elementary school) on lead vocals, Don Airey (Rainbow) on keyboards, Bob Daisley (Rainbow) on bass, Lee Kerslake (Uriah Heap) on percussion, and virtuoso Randy Rhoads (Quiet Riot) on lead guitar.  The band was surprised and upset to find that they had been relegated to "Ozzy's band" when the group name became the title of this solo album.Blizzard of Ozz was released in the UK in September 1980, and in the US in March 1981.  It would go on to 4x platinum status, and would be Ozzy Osbourne's best selling solo album.  And now, for those of you who are ready to hear from The Prince of Darkness, the Godfather of Metal himself, in his prime - “ALL ABOARDDDDDDD!  heh-heh-heh-heh!” Crazy TrainWhile this song is a classic and staple of metal, it took some time for this first single to achieve that status.  It peaked at number 9 on the Billboard charts in July 1981.  It is about the cold war - "Hears of a cold war, that's what we've become.  Inheriting troubles, I'm mentally numb."Mr. CrowleyThe second single from the album was a lot less well known outside of rock radio at the time.  It is about Aleister Crowley, who was an English occultist and magician from the early 20th century.  Ozzy had read a book about Crowley and was inspired to write a song by that and a deck of tarot cards they found in the studio.  The guitar solo from this piece is a famous one by Rhoads, who would be killed in a plane crash in 1982.  Mr. Crowley and Crazy Train were the only singles released from the album.Goodbye to RomanceThis slower-paced song was the first track written for the album, and was Ozzy's way of saying goodbye to his former band.  Black Sabbath fired Osbourne in April 1979, claiming that he was "unreliable and had excessive substance abuse issues compared to the other members."  I Don't KnowThe opening track from the album was surprisingly not released as a single.  However, it did get considerable airplay on rock stations regardless.  Some suggest that this song was also about Osbourne's departure from Black Sabbath, but the lyrics sound more like a plea to not expect answers to serious questions from rock and roll singers. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the animated TV series “Thundarr the Barbarian”This staple of Saturday morning animated action shows made its debut in 1980, predicting cosmic destruction in 1994. STAFF PICKS:“Rough Boys” by Pete TownshendWayne brings us a side project from the Who's Pete Townshend.  "Rough Boys" is off his second solo album, but this one sounds just like the Who.  It is dedicated to the Sex Pistols, and Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic described it as a "blistering punk love letter."“Another One Bites the Dust” by QueenRob's staff pick spent 15 weeks on the top 10, making it the longest running top-10 song of 1980.  This song has a number of sound effects, but there are no synthesizers used to make the song.  "Another One Bites the Dust" was considered for the Rocky III film, but ended up being "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor when things fell through on "Dust."  “Sometimes a Fantasy” by Billy JoelBrian features one of many hit singles off Joel's "Glass Houses."  The song is about erotic phone call lines - 900 numbers.  Joel was careful with the lyrics he chose to avoid issues with censors and moral advocacy groups.“Late in the Evening” by Paul SimonBruce's staff pick is the lead single off Simon's fifth studio album and semi-autobiographical movie "One Trick Pony."  Dummer Steve Gadd is playing with two pairs of drumsticks in each hand to give the percussion a fuller feeling.  According to Songfacts, the lyrics are based on a drwam that Simon had when he was a teenager of being a rock star. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Behind My Camel” by The PoliceThis instrumental track from the 1980 album release, Zenyatta Mondatta was written by Andy Summers, but hated by Sting and Stewart Copeland.  Summers plays both lead guitar and bass on this track, because Sting opted out.

There are three ways to generate passive income; start a business, invest or speculate. The key word in that sentence is passive. Passive means you can generate economic benefits without the requirement of your personal exertion. Since it doesn’t require personal exertion, it frees up your time to spend it on activities or with the people you love. Each of these three options have merit. But the important thing to note is that not all three will suit everyone. This point is very important to appreciate, and could save you a lot of time, stress and money!A quick bit of theory firstLegendary author and prolific researcher, Jim Collins formulated a concept called the “Hedgehog Concept”. The Hedgehog Concept was based on the famous essay by Isaiah Berlin in which he refers to an ancient Greek story: “The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing.”It was Collins’ thesis that successful companies are laser-focused on the Hedgehog Concept, which is the intersection of 3 important considerations or questions (i.e. the orange portion in the illustration below):1. what you are deeply passionate about,2. what you can be the best in the world at, and3. what best drives your economic or resource engine.Successful companies focus on delivering products or services that they can be the best at and ignore all other opportunities.(By the way, Jim Collins’ book, Good to Great is one of the best business books I have read.)Let me share a quick story about meBefore I relate this theory to personal investment, let me share a story with you.I have some friends that are successful property developers and make substantial six-figure profits. In the past, I have considered whether I should get involved in property development too, especially since I have the property, finance and taxation knowledge. However, many years ago, I decided to focus on my Hedgehog. Property development just isn’t for me.Property developing takes a lot of time. So, I could either spend my time on developing property with the aim of generating a once-off profit. Alternatively, I could spend that time thinking about and helping my clients build wealth. Just one idea that helps a client creates a lot of value for them and me. That client will continue to do business with my firm and will likely refer their friends. And that will generate long term value for both of us.I am deeply passionate about delivering the best independent financial advice. I am good at the work I do. And accumulating a number of happy ongoing clients generates stable economic returns. This is my Hedgehog and when I stick to it, my personal wealth grows. The reverse is true when I have deviated (which I did before I learnt this lesson). One of my mentors, who has operated a successful business for more than 50 years and built significant personal wealth, advised me; “Every time I’ve done something outside of my core business, it has cost me time and money.”Medico mortgage default rates are low if they stick to what they knowThe big 4 banks all have special divisions that target doctors (and have for many years) because it is widely accepted that mortgage default rates are substantially lower than the average. This stands to reason given few doctors are ever unemployed and their income is very stable and typically higher than the average. This is true when lending to a doctor for home or investment purposes. However, statistics demonstrate that when a doctor borrows for another purpose e.g. property development or unrelated business, default rates skyrocket. Most doctors are smart, hard-working people. But that doesn’t necessarily translate to them also being successful business owners. Statistics would overwhelmingly indicate that doctors should stick to their day job.My client Simon…Simon has been (mortgage broking service) client for over 10 years (this is not his real name of course). Over this period, he has tried to find many shortcuts to wealth. This has included investing in different property types and locations, which might have been sexy at the time but lacked fundamentals. He has also dabbled in various businesses. None of these activities have created a lot of wealth and some have been a disaster.Simon’s has earned an above average income for a long time and doesn’t over-spend (lives relatively frugally).Simon would be in a substantially better financial position today if he stuck to an evidence-based strategy and quite frankly, not listened to his own advice or ideas.Mistakes often compound. Making a bad investment decision that causes financial loss often tempts people to brainstorm ideas with the sole aim of mitigating any financial losses. These ideas are invariably aimed in the pursuit of short-term profit (which is at the cost of long-term value). In effect, one bad decision is often followed by another.Do you have the ability and passion to become an investment expert? The proverb “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing” needs to be rewritten for investing. The proverb should be “Anything short of complete knowledge is a dangerous thing”.Some of my clients are quite financially astute. They understand and know most things – they are just missing the last 5-10% of knowledge or experience. But that last 5-10% is usually critical. You only have to be a little bit wrong to be completely wrong. The fact is, that some people will never become great investors. Some people will never be successful entrepreneurs. But that’s okay. You must find what you are good at and delegate all other important things. The Hedgehog Concept applies perfectly well to personal investing. You must ask yourself two questions:1. Can you be the best in the world at formulating and implementing Australian-based investments; and2. Are you deeply passionate about investing – passion is more than just an interest? If you can honestly answer yes to both of those questions, then it’s likely it is in your best interest that you make your own investment decisions. However, if your answer is ‘no’ to either or both questions, then you are better off sticking to your day job and paying for (and following) high quality financial advice. When it comes to building wealth, often the slow and boring path is the most successful one in the long run.

I'm Dan Jackson and this week I want to answer the questionWhat is Critical Inquiry Based learningThe word inquiry comes from the Latin enqueren And means to ask questionsIn last week's episode, number 36 I talked about how good questionsstart with How or why rather than what, when or who. Should be personable, using “we” “you” or “our” Relate to your course outcomes, anddraw on central elements to your course or subject area connecting content to life Today I am talking more practically about how to help students ask their own questions and foster enquiry in your classroom.Wonder wallsKnow, wonder, learnWhat I know, what I need to knowThe idea with these is that questions lead to more questions that lead to more questions and the student spirals down a rabbit hole just like any good researcher does as they find and follow the trails of evidence. For example, a student might ask what happened to start world war II, which may lead them to reading old newspaper articles and history books written by Englishmen or Australians. But they then may ask what Germany thought led to the war or America which may lead to new insights. They then may ask how Hitler got into power in the first place and look into the relationship breakdown between Japan and America. This could then lead to more questions and further research as the cycle continues.I want to note here that it is important as the teacher to help bring this inquiry back to the outcomes and content and to ensure a complete tangent does not take over… but as much as you can let the student follow their curiosity. Now to inquire critically means:Students need to know how to search properly - Scholar, advanced Google searches etcInvestigate - follow references, get notified of publicationsInterview - ask the right questionsFind experts - use SM to find relevant people, contact professors at universities etcBe critical - create and use criteria to determine the quality of evidenceTo be critical requires that they can:Tell who has authority on a subject and why?Looking at the person behind the informationIs .gov or .edu good enough, which is better?Consider multiple perspectivesIdentify underlying assumptions Understanding how contextual factors influence perspectives and understandings on contentReflection- identify their own preconceptions and biasesPrinciples that govern inquiry-based learning include:Student centred - instruction, resources and technology are organized to support them.Learning activities focus on information-processing skills.Teachers coach the learning process, and seek to learn about their students.Emphasis is placed on evaluating information-processing skills and conceptual understanding, NOT JUST the content.Well, that is it for this week. The New Zealand pursuiters are hoping a radical technique can propel them to a huge upset when they take on hosts South Korea in the Olympic speed skating semifinal early Thursday morning.Necessity was the mother of invention for the Kiwi trio of Shane Dobbin, kingpin Peter Michael and Reyon Kay, who as the fourth qualifiers must take on the top seeded Koreans.New Zealand's chances of progressing to the gold medal race are not rated high. Their next assignment would be a race for bronze, against traditional powerhouse the Netherlands or Norway. Annelise Coberger won New Zealand's only Winter Olympics medal 26 years ago.READ MORE: Winter Olympics Day 12: Kiwis in action - All you need to knowThe 38-year-old Dobbin said the team has settled on a system of fewer lead changes with Michael anchoring the team by leading for a massive final five laps. They tried the system because veteran Dobbin wasn't strong enough to hold up at the front, after coming out of retirement. Dobbin believes other teams might even consider incorporating what New Zealand is doing."We have a unique set up, with the anchor skater doing a few more laps than rest," he told Radio Sport."We run a bit different, a necessity of last season. I physically wasn't strong enough to pull steady leads and make it to the finish in good shape."We altered our lead schedule, Reon pulls the first three laps them, and Michael is on front for the final five laps."It is a challenge. While it is tough for the guys, every team loses .3 second every time you change the lead, so if we can minimise our lead change..."Dobbin said their analysis shows the Koreans' big advantage over New Zealand is on the first and last laps. The Kiwis will make a particular effort to compensate for that. Their plan involves estimating the sort of time Korea can do, and coming up with average lap times to beat that."We're loving it at the moment, going into this semifinal," he said."They are the home nation with a crowd of 10,000 people cheering for them. It is their race to lose. The pressure is on them."Team pursuit : Two teams of three athletes each start out from opposite sides and skate eight laps. Ranking is based on the time that the third skater passes the finish line.

The sun's a wizardBy all I tell; but so's the moon a witch. From the high west she makes a gentle castAnd suddenly, without a jerk or twitch,She has her spell on every single lizard.I fancied when I looked at six o'clockThe swarm still ran and scuttled just as fast. The moon was waiting for her chill effect.I looked at nine: the swarm was turned to rockIn every lifelike posture of the swarm,Transfixed on mountain slopes almost erect.Across each other and side by side they lay.The spell that so could hold them as they wereWas wrought through trees without a breath of stormTo make a leaf, if there had been one, stir.It was the moon's: she held them until day,One lizard at the end of every ray.The thought of my attempting such a stay!
