Happy new year from the sports bastards!
For our last podcast of 2025 we delve into two very different big band projects, check out a recording by a brass band formed to cheer a guy up on his half-centenary, and dig through crates to pull out a harmolodic gem from the early eighties, when bass knew how to be big. Pop matters is light this week, focusing mostly on an English trio who took on a nickname for residents of Indiana for no apparently reason. Odean Pope - ALMOST LIKE ME; Mark Masters – SAM RIVERS 100; John Yao - POINTS IN TIME; Wild Iris Brass Band – WAY UP.
Kid A.G., El Pres, and Hat Trick pile into The Studio and immediately unload on Bay City's traffic nightmare—Veterans Bridge construction turning every drive into a rage-inducing crawl while the city pretends it's progress. Hat Trick breaks down small-town politics: old-timers screaming about nonexistent crime waves fueled by Facebook bots and Fox News, demanding a police force the budget can't touch, while the new mayor actually does the homework to shut it down. Conversation swings to never feeling scared in local dive bars, teenage kids learning to drive, and Hat Trick's daughter already licensed while her son couldn't care less. Fedorov jersey retirement sparks Wings ticket excitement, stories of past games, and old-school hockey nostalgia. Things get filthy fast—AI chatbots turning lonely people into digital sex addicts, Kid demoing a disturbingly eager bot that escalates from casual to full-on dirty talk in seconds. Hat Trick shares fireman hook-up details (double loads, dripping hours later), debates whether catching your partner sexting an AI would piss you off, and insists women won't ditch real dick for robots. Stack dating, quiet quitting, media hype, generational gripes, avocado toast myths, and pretentious academic word salads all get roasted. OnlyFans cash potential, missed pregnant photo ops, feet pics, and spinning off platforms come up alongside hottie worship. Elvis outtakes, facial finish obsessions, AI-generated motorboat songs, and dinosaur-hand jerk fantasies close it out. Pure rambling Michigan chaos—traffic rants to cum-dripping texts, zero script, all tangents.

Late one night last week, Bill was wondering — just in an offhand way — whether it would be cheaper to refurbish the four Iowa-class battleships (all are museum ships today) or simply build new ones. THE NEXT DAY, President Trump announced the first of the eponymously named BBGs: Guided Missile Battleships. After 80 years, the game not only changed… it looks like it actually changed BACK.

It's that time of year again, when Mike insists on a holiday music themed episode and Pat is too worried about upsetting Santa to say "no." This year's bag o' tunes has very little coal in it, unless you are allergic to smooth jazz. Mike, anyway, thinks his choice is one of the least offensive as the genre goes. You be the judge. With the fifth entry of the Parker series, The Score, Richard Stark aka Donald E. Westlake puts his career criminal anti-hero in charge of his most ambitious heist yet: the 12-man robbery of a North Dakota mining town. This allows the author to expand the violent world of Parker by introducing a slew of fresh characters, including thespian-thief Alan Grofield, who would go on to star in four solo novels of his own. We discuss the series' change in scope and structure in a book that would set the scene moving forward, the first of several to make the spectacular job the whole show. We also talk about the little-seen French movie adaptation, the introduction of this goofball Grofield and why Parker insists on taking jobs with such obvious risks. The Score artwork by Tony Stella. John Lennon was a walking contradiction: a violent pacifist and a creative genius marred by creative inconsistency. Just as he was getting his groove back, he was gunned down by Mark David Chapman, a self-loathing narcissist who was obsessed with his contradictory hero, as well as with Lennon's musical rival, Todd Rundgren and J.D. Salinger's angsty, Holden Caulfield from The Catcher In The Rye. Episode 349 features Love Nut, the mid-90s Baltimore indie pop band that almost broke big but got lost in the major-label shuffle. Formed in the gritty heart of Charm City by dual-threat axe-man/vocalist Andy Bopp, guitarist/vocalist Max Mueller, bassist Dave Vespoint, and drummer Tom Sabia, Love Nut blended raw emotion with razor-sharp melodies on their 1996 debut Bastards of Melancholy. Snapped up by Interscope Records after a local indie release, the album earned rave reviews for its melancholic bite but sadly fizzled commercially. Fast-forward to now: After nearly three decades, Love Nut is coming back for a triumphant 30th anniversary reunion show this Friday, December 5th, at The Recher Theater in Towson, MD, just a stone's throw from downtown Baltimore. Special guests Splitsville join the fray for what promises to be a nostalgia-soaked explosion of guitars, harmonies, and that unmistakable Charm City swagger. In the episode I spoke with Dave and we talked about the band's origin story, the record industry then vs now, and the big show this weekend! Check out the Recher Theater website for tickets.
