Trump keeps wrapping himself in the American flag while while behaving in a very anti-American way—like threatening to shut down protests at his $45 million birthday parade or giving a highly partisan speech in front of soldiers in violation of military policy. And as the haphazardly deployed Marines join federalized Guard troops in LA, Trump seems hellbent on escalating his feud with Gavin Newsom—and the giant blue state that rejects him. Plus, Putin looks to gain an advantage in Ukraine while America is distracted, and Tulsi may have disclosed state secrets to the entire world. Gen. We believe these rioters in LA should be shot dead if they're throwing bricks and rocks at police and military. Shot. Dead. Not. Kidding. That'll stop this nonsense. But... who is funding these rioters (many are being paid, and paid a LOT)... we'll talk about this. And, was the Trump-Musk feud staged for political or agenda gain? It's looking more and more like exactly that. We'll talk about this and more on this week's show. We hope you'll listen in. :)

In the latest episode of Talking Istanbullocks, things spiral from the valleys of Wales to the poultry pens of Lickey End. Jorma belts out “The Rambler”, a Kenny Rogers-style ballad advising Welsh village pub-goers about Brexit, inbreeding and sheep-related shame.True or False starts with Norm from Cheers and somehow ends with Irish wakes and obituaries, Welsh Baftas, and Paul Bastard — Torquay United's fan liaison officer turned internet legend. In Lickey End, Norma's standing for Reform UK but forgets politics the moment she sees her black, poultry-farming Tory rival. This week, I'm talking to literal Grammy-nominated musical legend John Ondrasik—aka Five for Fighting—about education, mentorship, Costco carts, and how he's working to put real music teachers back in underfunded schools. (Also, I tried not to ugly cry while listening to “100 Years” on loop. Mostly succeeded.) But before we get there… we've got a classroom snake situation, an inappropriate dictionary moment, and a cooking class where a student shows up with a knife restriction and a no-females policy. What could go wrong? From ED plans that make zero sense to policies that make teachers legally required to just stand there while it happens, we're breaking down the bureaucratic circus one story at a time. Stay for the music. Stay for the IEP trauma. Stay because someone said “bastard” in the most educational way possible. Takeaways: A kid calls another a bastard—and the dictionary only confirms it. A cooking class takes a wild turn when a student shows up with a restriction against females and knives. I talk with Five for Fighting's John Ondrasik about his plan to restore music teachers to underfunded schools—and how he ended up supplying Costco carts. A snake shows up in the classroom, and somehow, that's not the wildest part of the episode. This week, Ellen and Alona are joined by Canadian historian Quinn Slobodian. The rise of the populist right is often framed as a backlash against neoliberalism—a revolt by those “left behind” by globalisation. But in his new book Hayek's Bastards, Quinn argues the opposite: that movements like Maga are not a reaction to neoliberalism, but its latest iteration.Tracing the intellectual lineage of today's far right, he characterises it as a “new fusionism” between three ideological pillars: racialised beliefs in genetically hardwired human nature, hard money, and hard borders.Quinn answers: who are “Hayek's bastards”? Are the right better at engaging with ideas than the left? And what does Trump really believe?Hayek's Bastards: The Neoliberal Roots of the Populist Right is available here.Prospect podcasts are also available on our YouTube channel (@prospect_magazine) Hosted on Acast. Edition No138 | 04-05-2025 - Russia was formally declared a national security threat to the UK last month. After Litvinenko, Skripal, the invasions of Georgia, Crimea, Donbas and then Ukraine full-scale, we could be forgiven for asking why this status as the ‘main adversary' took so long to formalise? This is also against the backdrop of repeated threats by Russian propagandists to annihilate the UK and its population, promoted in part by a curious mixture of admiration and loathing that Russian propagandists have for the UK. Firstly, we had a mighty empire, which they admire. We did many beastly things to our colonial subjects, which they also admire. We gave the empire away and have been trying to disavow our imperial ambitions, which they think is stupid. We are relatively tolerant as a society, which they think makes us weak and decadent. But they also have this curious impression that every time something goes wrong with genocidal plans, or everywhere some piece of Russian equipment goes up in smoke, the British must have some role to play. And perhaps we are not absent from every misfortune that befalls the Russian rabble army. Nonetheless, the Russian propagandists and strategists seem to have an impression that we are a meddling force, still at the height of its powers. One of them christened us ‘The Main Bastards', which has become an incredible NAFO meme and rallying cry for many that work to counter Russian narratives and influence. But the Main Bastards? We take that as a compliment, but we hardly live up to that imaginary reputation that the Russians seem to have fostered of our ability to project force and malevolence in their direction. Some of us wish we were still TMBs vis-à-vis Russia.----------Links: https://kyivindependent.com/uk-reportedly-updates-war-alert-plans-amid-russian-threats/https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2025/05/6/7510793/https://euromaidanpress.com/2025/05/06/12-emergency-zones-bunkers-and-blackout-plans-britain-quietly-prepares-for-russian-attack/https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/britain-secretly-planning-direct-attack-35176169https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/defence-review-to-prioritise-uk-homeland-security/https://www.itv.com/news/2025-03-10/10-years-to-make-uk-defence-a-credible-deterrent----------Your support is massively appreciated! What happens when a Harvard dropout builds a global empire on the idea of connection... and then becomes one of the most emotionally disconnected figures in tech? This week, Amanda and Chelsea are joined by Robert Evans of Behind the Bastards (@bastardspod) to unpack the cult-like control of Mark Zuckerberg, the boy wonder turned code-powered control freak. From the chaos of Facemash to the calculated calm of Meta, we trace the evolution of Zuckerbergs's leadership style and how his obsession with efficiency, rating systems, and surveillance shaped one of the most influential companies in the world. Three months ago, Pierre Poilievre was going to take 50 per cent of the total vote, a historic generational landslide. Now, he's a pub trivia question. What happened in Canada? Did it warp beneath the enormous trade gravity of the Trump Presidency? And why did Canadians think that turning to a milquetoast former central banker would turn off the US electromagnet dismantling their country one bolt at a time? India and Pakistan are at it again. Early in the week, reports were of World War 3. Vishnu and Allah duking it out with nukes at the gates of hell. So far, it's all sparks and no light, but this week's rift shows how the region is both increasingly important and ever more a pawn of bigger powers. Finally, on Saturday Foreign Ministers from five central Asian countries met with China's Wang Yi to talk over deepening trade ties. It may seem like just a bunch of bros jawing over the agree-to-agree communiquê, but this is the dawning of the Middle Corridor. The password today is CHAOS. The left is screaming with their pants on fire that President Trump's tariffs are causing chaos. They're furious that DOGE is exposing illegal aliens gaming the system to the democrats' benefit. More working Americans feel the GOP is the party that best represents their needs and media hack Taylor Lorenz swooning over accused killer Luigi Mangione is further mainstreaming a scary new assassination culture.
We are joined by yet another TMK favorite, Quinn Slobodian, who is author of Hayek's Bastards: Race, Gold, IQ, and the Capitalism of the Far Right. We discuss Quinn's analysis of “new fusionism” or a mutant strain of neoliberalism that crystallized in the 1990s, which sought to ground and defend neoliberal policies through their own bastardization of biological sciences — cognitive, behavioral, evolutionary, genetic, and so on. They then used scientism to justify and propagate political ideas and economic models based on hardwired human nature and hierarchical differences between races, cultures, and intelligence. The fringes of the 1990s have now become the mainstream of the 2020s. ••• Hayek's Bastards: Race, Gold, IQ, and the Capitalism of the Far Right | Quinn Slobodian https://press.princeton.edu/books/hardcover/9781890951917/hayeks-bastards Standing Plugs: ••• Order Jathan's new book: https://www.ucpress.edu/book/9780520398078/the-mechanic-and-the-luddite ••• Subscribe to Ed's substack: https://substack.com/@thetechbubble ••• Subscribe to TMK on patreon for premium episodes: https://www.patreon.com/thismachinekills Hosted by Jathan Sadowski (bsky.app/profile/jathansadowski.com) and Edward Ongweso Jr. (www.x.com/bigblackjacobin).
