One of our all-time favorite guests and unofficial Mentor Mom of the C+C team, Krista Gilbert, is back to answer alllllll our questions about motherhood. A mom to four grown kids, Krista shares her best advice for marital disagreements (humility is underrated), tailoring parenting to kids' individual needs (one-on-one time is key), and navigating the conversations we'd rather avoid (like, changing bodies and sex). From sibling relationships to responding to our kids' choices, Krista graciously reminds us that it always starts with us and our modeling, but it doesn't end there: our identity is not tied to our kids' outcomes, and that may be the greatest encouragement of all.  This show is brought to you ad-free by our generous Substack community. If you'd like to support the work we do for as little as $3/month, head to coffeeandcrumbs.substack.com to join us (and get bonus episodes!). For show notes, go to coffeeandcrumbs.net/podcast. Have you ever learned something, thought you had it down, and then—boom—you realize you need to learn it all over again in this season of life? Yeah, us too. This week, we're diving into the lessons we're re-learning in midlife and what scripture has to say about them. We talk about how fear sneaks into our decision-making now more than ever, the shift in how our kids watch and learn from us as they grow, and why it's time to embrace strong over skinny. We also unpack the surprising power of journaling for mental clarity, the societal shift from risk-taking to playing it safe, and why we still need to take risks in this stage of life. And of course, we get into friendship—how midlife invites us to reconnect with old and new friends in deep and meaningful ways. Today is part 2 of discussing how we can grow and shape our relationships with our adult siblings. Siblings are special because they know us over the entire span of our lives. They also walked in similar shoes as children, having grown up in the same family, and that produces an understanding and knowing that is special. As we get older, life gets busy and we sometimes neglect these anchor relationships. Today we are discussing how we can intentionally grow them, work through conflicts that arise, and step into each other's lives in a meaningful way. We know everyone has a different starting place when it comes to relationships with siblings. If you are someone who would like to work toward greater intimacy and trust with your siblings, regardless of where you are right now, these two episodes will offer both inspiration and practical steps. This week covers ideas for staying current on one another's lives, what investing in our siblings' children looks like, how to show up for one another, and what it means to let each other evolve and change. The podcast co-hosts, Krista Gilbert and Alexandra Kuykendall, have been friends for over 30 years. Because of this, they have observed qualities and behaviors in each other that make the other person an especially good friend. Podcast listeners often ask about their friendship, but they've never talked about it at length on the show...until now. Using what they notice in each other as friends, Krista and Alex, are able to talk through what makes a good friend. Some of the things they highlight are personal qualities or character attributes, and some are how those qualities play out practically. Quality friendship is critical to a healthy and thriving life. If other relationships in your life are changing, or if you simply want to be a better friend, focusing in on the kinds of friendships you are working toward can improve your overall health. It is our time to rise and be the kinds of friends we'd like to have. Little by little, a little becomes a lot. Embracing this concept is an important step in your journey to becoming healthy, fit and happy. Alexandra Kuykendall uses this concept in her book “Loving My Actual Life”. Believing that what we focus on is what we become, she looked for areas in her busy life that could be improved. Each month for 9 months she chose one aspect of her life and asked herself what small changes she could make that would help her enjoy life today, because tomorrow is not a promise. It is not a dress rehearsal for the future. She chose things in areas that impacted her everyday life like parenting, meals and organization. Not wanting to completely upend her life, she made small changes that would be sustainable over time. It was an experiment. What could she try? What worked and what didn’t. At the end of each chapter in her book she asks the reader questions to help them build insight into their own lives. Building on the positive effects of that 9-month experiment, she went on to write “Loving My Actual Christmas” and “Loving My Actual Neighbor”. In her latest book, tentatively titled “Seeking Out Goodness”, she looks for Gods goodness in the world. It comes out late summer to early fall. Alexandra along with Krista Gilbert founded The Open-Door Sisterhood, a community of women working to be world changers for good, right where they are. They co-host a podcast with the same name. She finds her inspiration in her everyday life. She watched her mom, who is in her 70’s, take care of her step-father. It reminded her that she needs to take care of her body so she will be able to care for people when she gets older. Watching her stepdad deteriorate reminded her that the body is temporary. We have to be mindful of our spiritual life because that is what carries on when our physical life is done. The better care we take of ourselves the better quality of life we get. If you feel selfish taking time for you now, realize that you can serve others better, stronger and longer if you pay attention to your body. Something she found important was finding quiet time to work or do workouts. By finding “pockets of time” in the middle of a busy day she is modeling how to make it happen for her children. Alexandra wishes people could see the influence they have. The world is big, but we forget that God has placed each of us right where we are for a reason. On the podcast they say, “You are a world changer for good ,right where you are”. You don’t need a big title. You don’t need to write a bestseller or have a million viewers on You Tube, to make a difference. You will have the greatest influence on the people who see the real you, the ones around you when you wake up, when you go to bed. They see your imperfections. They need to see you ask God for Grace. They need to see you being humble in asking for forgiveness. Have integrity right where you are. Anyone, no matter what their position in life, has influence, so take that with a passion and decide you are going to be a world changer. Be an encourager for those around you, see where God is at work and join him in it. That is how we make change. Be the change you want the world to be.Resources:AlexandraKuykendall.comFacebook: @AlexandraKuykendall.authorIG: AlexandraKuykendallResources: www. healthaccountabilitycoach.comwww.facebook.com/houselifestylesIG: houselifestyes

My guest for episode #29 is Krista Gilbert.  Krista is a speaker and author of “Reclaiming Home: A Family’s Guide for Life, Love, and Legacy”, co-author of Focus on the Family’s “Give Them Wings”, and the co-host of The Open Door Sisterhood Podcast. Today on the show Krista and I are talking about family, traditions and meaningful gift giving.  Krista explains why traditions are more than just fun practices, how they help shape a family’s identity and instill a sense of belonging in our kids. We also talk about meaningful gift giving. Not just giving stuff to give stuff.  Krista shares her ideas for experiences, something that builds a memory. She gives thoughts for gifts that foster talents or interests, as well as homemade gifts.  Krista shares a story of a year when she felt like she had missed the heart of Christmas.  She encourages us not to do what she had done that year, but to pause, take the time on our own or with our family to meditate on the true story of Christmas and put Jesus at the center of our holiday.    MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE The Open Door Sisterhood Krista’s book Reclaiming Home The Light of Christmas by Richard Paul Evans Nana’s Rum Cake Recipe 1 Box yellow cake mix (with pudding) ½ cup cold water 1/3 cup oil ½ cup dark rum 3 eggs Mix all ingredients and bake in greased bunt pan for 1 hour at 325 degrees. Gilbert explains how her clinical training has been one of her biggest strengths as an executive, how leaders’ interactions with clinicians can set an organizational tone for how patients are treated, and the difference between confidence and company-damaging ego. Gilbert also shares advice on self-care for executives and the lessons she would share with others in the field today who are embarking on the same clinician-to-executive leap that she made more than a decade ago. There is something about letting our children step into the world that feels counter to our parenting instincts. Author Carol Kuykendall has been speaking and writing on the topic of parenting and letting go for decades. The re-release of her popular book Give Them Wings: Preparing For the Time When Your Teens Leave Home offers great opportunity for the sisterhood to talk about this topic. In fact, our very own Krista Gilbert contributed to the updates in the book and Alex wrote the foreword. In other words, we believe in Carol's message. This is the first of a two part series on this topic. This episode covers the high school years: what we're feeling, how our kids are separating, and how we move into the "consultant" role. We cover fear, how to address it as it comes up, tailoring fun to our family and individual kids, and looking past the immediate to the long-term goal of adult relationships with our kids. We understand how we've likely been letting go in small ways for years and how fighting our urdges to rescue our kids from hard things hurts rather than helps them. A must listen for parents approaching and in the middle of parenting teenagers. Within minutes we are crying as this topic goes straight to the tender place for a mother. No matter your phase of parenting, you will benefit from the principles Carol shares about letting our kids grow into the people God has called them to be. That is what we want after all. Sometimes it takes the sisterhood to remind us.

A true Open Door Sisterhood Podcast interview! Co-host Krista Gilbert interviews her partner in the sisterhood, Alexandra Kuykendall, about her new book Loving My Actual Christmas. They talk about the experiment Alex conducted last Christmas season because she wanted to have a less stressful and exhausting holiday. In the midst of her actual life she searched for more hope, love, joy and peace. What she found is that much of her newfound appreciation of the holiday stems from remembering the story that God so loved the world...he sent a baby. This is the behind the scenes interview where we hear what Alex thinks about the experiment a year later. She shares the stories in the book that have stuck with her, what Christmas means to her now, and how she hopes to extend her celebration through the 12 Days of Christmas. This isn't about beautiful Christmas cards or Pinterest worthy meals. This is about remembering together that Jesus is the hope of the world and his arrival is worth preparing for and celebrating. You won't want to miss this candid and intimate conversation between our podcast hosts as they talk about grief during the holidays, reconciling the difficult of the world with the hope of Christmas and taking the knowledge of God with us into their everyday Christmas experiences. Here at the sisterhood we want you to love your actual Christmas because God pursued us all when he stepped onto earth all those years ago.

In week 2 of this series we chat with Alexandra Kuykendall. Alex is a wife, a mom, and an author.  She speaks to women around the world about issues of parenting, faith and identity. The conversation in this episode centers on lessons Alex has learned about what to look for in a mentor and how to effectively mentor others. We discuss the process she uses to determine what to let go of and what to hold on to and why letting go of good things can be such a big relief. I am so excited to officially kick of the holiday season here on the podcast with this incredibly practical and fun conversation! Krista Gilbert is an executive and personal life coach who helps people and companies “design a life they love” (how cool is that!?) She's also a personal friend who I enjoy and respect so much! In this conversation Krista and I talk about the realities of the holidays: They are magical and wonderful but can also be tricky. Expectations sneak in, things don't always go smoothly…kids grow up (and get married!?) Our own parents are aging (and may get sick or pass away.) And if we are not intentional about our mindset, Moms are sure to face a variety of emotional potential pitfalls over the holidays! Krista offers so much wisdom and so many practical tips you'll want to hold on to: from learning how to “boss our brains” to the importance of “consenting to change”. I loved what she shares about “honoring everyone involved”, and I personally can't wait to “hunt the good” this holiday season! Find all of this and so much more in this very packed episode. They are both super gifted at making homes practical, functional and beautiful. I got so many new ideas during our conversation (and laughed often). They crack me up!My favorite thing about them is how they view the home and how they always bring it back to the PEOPLE over the stuff. In the age of social media, I get so wrapped up in the appearance and making my home “look” just right. Sometimes, I just forget to make it work for our lives and the values we uphold as a family. Krista shared this verse which really encouraged me and I pray it encourages you as well.“You say, ‘I am allowed to do anything'—but not everything is good for you. You will also hear her wisdom and encouragement to keep growing as a woman and mom. I love how she encourages those with empty nests to be okay with two opposing feelings - joy and sorrow. And how she is coping with watching her kids launch into the world. My absolute favorite part is the last 10 minutes. Moms of younger kids - you will LOVE her ideas for traditions and celebrations. Find out what her “my night” tradition is - and why her kids remember that as a highlight. Connect with Pardon The Mess:Christian ParentingPardon The Mess Courtney DeFeoResources from today's show:KristaGilbert.comBook Krista to speakKrista's podcastKrista's Freebies - Celebrations & TraditionsCoDependent No More by Melody BeattieDr. Kelly FlanaganAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
