    109. All Good Things End: My Finale Episode

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 28, 2022 17:08

To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven. (Eccl 3:1 NKJV) If you've been listening for a while, you may have noticed some consistency back towards the end of last year and then a drop off. I had a team of 2 amazing women who helped me produce this podcast and to show up consistently on social media. In November after attending an influencer event in Nashville, I started some soul searching around this podcast. I made the decision to not invest financially in having a team to edit and produce the podcast and help me with my social media presence on IG @strongherme. I had no idea when I made that decision, that a few months later, I would be making another bigger decision about the podcast. I've cried a few tears thinking about all I plan to share with you today.  My first episode of this podcast went live Feb 2017. Back then it was name the StrongHer podcast. If you go back and listen to that first episode, it's a clip of my message from the 2017 You Are Stronger Than You Think Women's Event. Our theme that year was Who Am I? In that episode I share the origins of the 'You Are Stronger Than You Think' message, stories from my own life of how God uncovers purpose and calling. The previous year's event included a Friday night event and 5K race.  It came with some harsh criticism from an attendee.  - it was my greatest fear and my wakeup call: I needed to be the leader my vision deserved. I needed to ask for help; I needed to push beyond the fear of criticism to be a more brave and authentic leader.    After some deep reflection, prayer and talks with my husband and friends, I'm discerning it's time to bring this podcast to a close. My initial purpose for starting this podcast was to have a platform to share women's stories and their expertise, as I affirmed women that there is grace to be successful as keepers of the home and as professional women. This journey has produced more in my life than I could have known to ask for and the growth I've experienced in 4 years, in part, due to the discipline of publishing this podcast, is something that I not only wouldn't trade, but I also highly recommend this or some other creative pursuit that requires you to stretch, as your own personal development tool.  Here are just 3 of the ways I've grown, as a direct result of this pursuit: I've learned authenticity through this podcast. It has required me to process my own thoughts about topics. I've learned new skills, capabilities (listening, interviewing, technical skills around podcasting). I've learned new things about myself.   I've reclaimed my voice through this podcast. When I say “voice”, sometimes I'm referring to your actual voice; other times I'm referring to your influence, your mission, your values, your perspective, your story. Your voice is one of the parts of you that identifies you in this world.   I've learned how to tend to my own heart while staying faithful to a vision in my heart/soul, without constant validation of its impact. Talk about Hebrews 3,4. Hebrews 3: 12 Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. 13 You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. 14 For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. Hebrews 4: 6 So God's rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. 10 For all who have entered into God's rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. 11 So let us do our best to enter that rest.  These 3 things alone are enough for me. I am confident I have gone all in with this  and that before I could even recognize or articulate it, God has been ordering my steps and working out things in me in this process. I believe my intended purpose and the one God has worked out in me over the last 4 years has been fulfilled and I am incredibly proud of this body of work. In your favorite podcast app, you can listen to over 100 episodes that will encourage you as you work the plan God has entrusted to you. My version of entering God's rest is an act of surrender, an act of obedience, an act of trust. I trust God with where all this has been leading and there's apart of me that believes that it's always been leading to right where I am now. None of my work has been in vain. It has all mattered. Before you go… In 2022 I am resting from the work of daily/weekly visibility online. I am not resting from my primary work of leadership coaching and consulting. As a matter of fact, I believe freeing up the mental energy, time and resources required to produce this podcast, will give me renewed energy and focus for my work. In case you aren't aware, my work is centered around helping mission-driven CEOs/leaders become the leader their vision deserves through activating their strengths and the strength of their team. What that looks like in this current season is (a) I am partnering with the leader of a global DEI organization to provide leadership coaching and diversity training for her corporate and nonprofit clients.  (b) I help business and ministry leaders who have reached a level of mastery in their field plan, produce and launch a digital leadership development resource that creates an additional stream of income in their business or ministry.  (c ) I provide private coaching for mission-driven women CEOs who want to become the leader their vision deserves through activating their strengths and the strength of their team. If any of these resonate and sound like the type of support you are also needing, let's schedule a 30 min virtual coffee date at calendly.com/kendratillman. I hope you will be challenged and inspired by this week's episode of the podcast. I am talking with my friend and fellow "world changer for good", Alexandra Kuykendall.  Alex speaks on issues of how faith impacts everyday life. She encourages us to listen well and communicate with generosity and kindness. She has authored four books: Loving My Actual Life, Loving My Actual Christmas, The Artist's Daughter: A Memoir, Loving My Actual Neighbor and her newest, "Seeking Out Goodness: Finding the True and Beautiful All around You". Philippians 4:8 tells us where to center our thought life. It is the roadmap for seeking out goodness.  How does considering what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable in someone else show us more of God's goodness? After the last 2 years we've had, is it possible for us to still see the good in others? In this episode Alex, ultimately, reminds us that we find what we're looking for and the more we seek out goodness and the more we look for the positive, the easier it will be for our brains to identify what is good. When we are encourage our listeners to look for the good. This is not a dismissal of accountability. It's a challenge to not conform to the attitudes and behaviors of the culture around us, but to make room for the Holy Spirit to transform our thinking through the truth of scripture. La'Vista is the founder and CEO of 31 Marketplace, an agency committed to helping women cultivate their own culture of work-life balance by leveraging systems and self-care.  As a burnout survivor and recovering overfunctioner, she knows firsthand that the path to success does not have to include subscribing to hustle culture, exhaustion and overbooked schedules. On a mission to promote burnout prevention, La'Vista is a professional speaker and host of the B.O.S.S.™ Talk podcast, where she and her guests speak candidly about the challenges and shifts needed to build sustainable and self-nurturing businesses. La'Vista is an Ohio native and bleeds scarlet and grey – go Buckeyes! She's married to her college sweetheart Stewart and they share their home in Arizona with their son, publicly known as The Cub. La'Vista has been my guest for previous episodes when we talked about goal planning at the top. This year I asked her to join me in taking a different approach to this conversation.       September is my birthday month so we are taking a little walk down memory lane. I'll share how I grew from the inside out in each season of transition. We're calling this series “My evolution as a woman”. As I share my truths, I hope it will ignite in you a desire to reflect over each season of transition in your life and anywhere you've been stagnant you'll be re-energized. In my 40s I'm navigating my identity as a woman. I feel like one of the best gifts I've given myself is to no longer look around waiting for permission or validation to step out in the things God is calling me to. To second guess myself, to doubt used to be my first response. // Join us for our Fall Activation Circle. A circle is an intimate group of women who clap for and challenge each other! As I share my truths, I hope it will ignite in you a desire to reflect over each season of transition in your life and anywhere you've been stagnant you'll be re-energized. This week I want to share from my late teen years. Our teen years are a time when we really have to begin discerning what's right for us and what's not; what's going to take us in the direction we want to go and what will take us away from it. As I have evolved as a woman, I have learned to trust the nudges from God I feel in my soul. I've learned the more I trust, the quicker I'm willing to trust the next time. How we learn to trust ourselves or follow our instincts: It's partially instinctual. It's partially wisdom gained from past experience. It's partially risking failure or disappointment. // Show Notes Scripture: Proverbs 3:5,6 TPT // Join us for our Fall Activation Circle. This month we're discussing the power of words. My love and passion for words is one of the things that makes me, me. Inspiring, empowering, impactful words are on the walls in my home, on my bookshelves, in my phone and on my vision boards. I am very careful with my words, because words shape us! Our thoughts, hopes, dreams and goals have been influenced by the words used to describe us and how we have been talked to. Words can bring life or death. So, for the next few episodes, I'll be sharing some of my favorite sources of wisdom aka books, songs, podcasts, etc

In episode 86 of the podcast, I share the recording of my conversation with the author of our March #WorkYourPlan book club selection, Jo Saxton. Jo Saxton is an author, speaker, podcast host, and leadership coach. She has dedicated her career to growing leadership teams around the world and empowering women to find their purpose in their personal lives and in leadership. Born in London to parents who immigrated from Nigeria, Jo credits her family’s unrelenting work ethic and the grace of God for the bold, tenacious approach she takes to sharing her wisdom on identity, influence, and living an authentic life. She is characterized by her effervescent honesty and warm approachability, leaving audiences with practical next steps in areas that are usually a bit ambiguous. In addition to work as an author, Jo has also spearheaded an initiative aimed to help women grow their leadership skills.  Jo lives in Minneapolis with her husband, Chris, and their two daughters. Jo's book, Ready to Rise, is one of the few I've seen that addresses the intersection of your identity as a leader, a Black woman and a Christian and provides a Biblical context for talking about leadership and calling. **** Show Notes Keep up with Jo: Watch the video of our conversation on Facebook @JoSaxton on Instagram JoSaxton.com *** Have you ever dropped the ball? So, we are reading Tiffany Dufu’s book, Drop the Ball: Achieving More by Doing Less, as our May book selection. I often joke that this book should be in the marriage and family section of the book store, rather than the business section. In Drop the Ball, Tiffany shows women how to cultivate the single skill they really need in order to thrive: the ability to let go. She recounts how she learned to reevaluate expectations, shrink her to-do list, and meaningfully engage the assistance of others - freeing the space she needed to flourish at work and to develop deeper, more meaningful relationships at home. Did you know? Even though women are half the workforce, they still represent only 18 percent of the highest level leaders. The reasons are obvious: Just as women reach middle management, they are also starting families. Mounting responsibilities at work and home leave them with no bandwidth to do what will most lead to their success. Drop the Ball urges women to embrace imperfection and to expect less of themselves and more from others - only then can they focus on what they truly care about, devote the necessary energy to achieving their real goals, and create the type of rich, rewarding life we all desire. Demystifying Purpose with Nicole Salmon

For the month of September where we will be talking about demystifying purpose. My conversation with Nicole Salmon centers around defining purpose and gaining clarity about your purpose. When we’re unclear on our calling, we feel stuck and left behind. In today’s conversation, my guest Nicole Salmon helps us demystify “purpose” by revealing the one mindset shift we must make to be fruitful in every season of life. Tune in throughout September as we continue this monthly series on clarifying our purpose. Purpose coach Nicole Salmon has worked with some pretty inspiring and powerful women over the years. You know the type. Fierce, has it all together and going places? Well at least to the public she is. But in her private life she is also unraveling and not clear about her next move. Why do they end up at her door? Because birds of a feather flock together. If the quest for finding your purpose has left you feeling stuck or left behind, you’re in the right place. In today’s episode, Nicole invites us to reject the idea that purpose is a destination, so that we can begin living from purpose, adapting it as our lifestyle. In this episode we discuss… The dark seasons that leave you feeling like purpose is over & how God uses them to propel you into His purposes for your life. The grace of God that overrides shame’s intent to silence and muzzle your calling.  Walking in your calling as a believer by putting “purpose” into the proper perspective. Following Purpose’s breadcrumbs in your life to rediscover and exercise your God-given gifts right where you are.  *** Words to Remember…  “Your mistakes do not void your purpose.”  – Nicole Salmon “The question is not: What do I want to be? But: What do I want to do? I already am somebody.” – Nicole Salmon “If the only time you are great is when your title is great, that’s not greatness. Maria’s passion for the event industry went from a hobby and side business, to a career change after the housing crisis of 2008. She is an award-winning event producer who acts as the director of sales for special events at an event company in Phoenix, AZ. She is a widowed mother of two teen boys, who keep her busy with basketball and football. This week’s #WorkYourPlan conversation with Sharli Berry, a licensed therapist and the owner of Destiny's Door Counseling, about reclaiming your voice after trauma is critical to this conversation. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's quote "protest is the language of the unheard" is quoted frequently right now. We're going to dig into what that means from a mental health perspective. Specifically, we will be talking about how we reclaim our voice after different forms of trauma - childhood abuse and neglect, domestic violence, as well as, the trauma of systemic racism. Courage always comes with a cost. For the month of June we’re exploring what courage costs all of us and how courage helps us reclaim our voice for our God-given assignment. One of the things I pray is reclaimed from our anger and outrage around history continuing to repeat itself is our heart for advocacy. I was joined by my sister, Khalilah Elliott, a multicultural marketing and communications expert, to talk about how we reclaim our voice for advocacy.  Advocacy comes in many forms and that's what Khalilah and I will be talking about. In this episode we discuss... ▪️Why advocacy matters ▪️Why our silence and inaction is detrimental to us all ▪️How to think critically about issues of social justice ▪️How to address our own anger and resentment in a way that’s not counterproductive ▪️Methods for how we “stop” the madness No more being silent about the things that matter most to us because we fear what others think. *** Show Notes: The Oaks Collective on Facebook @kayasinlilah @kendratillman @strongherme "If people are ready to leave you, because you find your voice and you're ready to speak up for yourself, let them go!" - Khalilah Elliott "If you're an advocate, your role, even when it is uncomfortable is to acknowledge when something is problematic for the people you claim you advocate for. It doesn't stop when it stops being a topic of discussion." - Khalilah Elliott *** You don't need more advice. You need space in your life to do what you already know. This week is an encore from last year - the secret to finishing strong when you’re tired. This episode was so well received and so relevant I thought I would share it again. It’s a short, practical episode. Stick around until the end, because there’s a homework assignment to prepare you for next week’s year in review episode.  The secret to finishing strong is not necessarily pushing harder, but embracing the rest your soul needs. Responding to Hurt with HOPE with Pastor Gloria Brintnall

My guest for this episode is Pastor Gloria Brintnall. Gloria has served as an itinerant minister for several years, taking her passionate preaching and teaching of the Word of God throughout America. She's assisted in the planting and establishment of four satellite churches. She is the author of 3 books. Stuff Happens, HOPE Anyway is her most recent book and the one we'll be discussing in this interview. I want to set the back story of why this interview was important to me. Imagine there is a couple in your church. The couple leads worship at your church. You know there kids because you serve them in the youth dept. They move away because of a call to ministry. They travel the world ministering through song. Years later, they settle into lead a church. Their kids are either young adults at this point or approaching it. They are not a constant in your life, but they are a family that you once knew. Then, one day you learn that the husband has been arrested and sentenced to prison time. This family’s world is flipped upside down. Because you are not close friends, you witness how the mom and her children move forward in their lives from a distance through Facebook. After a decade has passed the wife writes a book sharing how God kept her and her children and restored her through the storm. Now that you have that insight, one more thing before I share the interview. I’m called to help women heal from the pain of a devastating defining moment and get on with living the good life God has planned for them. What struck me most about Pastor Gloria’s story is how her message of hope shines through in the midst of a devastating, defining moment in her life. It has not marked her with bitterness or even fear about the future. I find that remarkable and I believe you will too. *********************** Show Notes: Stuff Happens: HOPE Anyway GloriaBrintnall.com Instagram: @GloriaBrintnall Reach out to a local Christian therapist for help with porn addiction. Boundaries and A Woman's Body with Dr. Joia Creer-Perry

I already had an episode planned where I talked to my cousin, an OBGYN about women’s health. I don’t normally talk about pop culture on my podcast but this week I’m making an exception. Why? Because of 2 news stories this month:  Rapper TI takes his daughter to the gynecologist once a year to make sure she’s still a virgin and now  Because of Kanye’s conversion, people are interjecting their beliefs about how his wife should start dressing.  I tend to keep my opinions about controversial things limited to what I share with people who personally know me because for the most part, opinions are opinions and everyone has one. In this case, I think both situations are about control. Control in any relationship, regardless of the circumstance can lead us to dangerous places. Respect isn’t found in control. Control comes from a place of fear.  In the second half of the show I share a conversation that I had with my cousin, Founder and President of the National Birth Equity Collaborative, Dr. Joia Creer Perry. She's a thought leader around racism as a root cause of health inequities, Speaker, Trainer, Advocate, Policy Expert, and fighter for justice. She's the recipient of the Congressional Black Caucus Healthcare Hero’s award and the Maternal Health Task Force at Harvard University Global Visionary Award for Commitment to Advancing Women’s Health. She is married to Dr. Andre Perry and has three children: Jade, Carlos, and Robeson Her love is her family; health equity is her passion; maternal and child health are her callings. She is a wealth information around the history of maternal health in the US and advocacy of black infant and maternal health. We discuss how racism has permeated the quality of care black women receive in this country and the importance of all women, but especially black women, being our own mental and physical health advocates. *********************** Show Notes: National Birth Equity Collaborative Join the Focus.me Project "I come from people who didn't we were broken and needing to be fixed." - Dr. Joia Creer Perry "America was birthed by black women midwives until the 1920s or so." - Dr. Joia Creer Perry "Your doctor doesn't know your body better than you.
